Cast: Faizal Hussein, Zahiril Adzim, Pekin Ibrahim, Bront Palarae, Soffi Jikan, Namron
Genre: Drama/Action/Horror (?)
Rating: Teen
Excerpt: "A very rich film that's a little hard to fully appreciate in one sitting... Definitely not for the impatient."

Synopsis

After a match goes bad, Malaysian Muay Thai fighter Adil (Zahiril Adzim) is rescued by his friends and together they cross the border from southern Thailand back home to Malaysia, specifically his hometown Bunohan. It goes against the deal made with the promoter where Adil is supposed to fight to the finish, hence prompting them to set assassin Ilham (Faizal Hussein) on his trail. Meanwhile, the seemingly well-to-do Bakar (Pekin Ibrahim) returns to Bunohan with the intention of coaxing his father into handing him the rest of their family's inheritance. However, Bunohan turns out to be more than just a clever name; There's something cryptic about the place that will make all their plans go astray.

5. Social commentaries
6. Visceral horror feel to the movie

What NOT to Expect
1. To be able to get it all in one sitting
2. To be fun for the impatient
Excerpt: "A fun movie but without any real focus..."

Synopsis

Tuck (Tom Hardy) and FDR (Chris Pine) are two best friends who are also the best tag team working for the CIA. However, their love lives couldn't be any more different. Whereas Tuck is more of a family man looking to settle down, FDR is a philanderer who loves nothing more than one-night-stands at his bachelor pad. Tension between the two arise when they discover that they are dating the same woman, Lauren (Reese Witherspoon). Few other things tear a friendship faster than jealousy, and our heroes get to experience what's that like first hand as they humourously try to foil each other's attempt to woo the lady.

1. Likable leads
2. Cool, solid action sequences
3. Depth
4. Underused talents
5. Everything in moderation

What NOT to Expect
1. A focused movie, with its scenes set up like sketches

Not a bad one to go with, if you can't decide what to watch

But ever wonder what Tom Cruise would be like had he opted for a career in rock music instead of acting? I don't know about the singing part (hence why he's an actor) but he'd nail down the look pretty well, as evident on this upcoming movie called Rock of Ages where he played a character called Stacee Jaxx.

Movie Title: Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter
Release Date: June 21st, 2012
Director: Timur Bekmambetov
Starring: Benjamin Walker, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rufus Sewell, Jimmi Simpson

I might be rushing things just a little bit because we still have a few weeks left in February, but come to think of it, June is not that far away especially with the rather impressive lineup of movies we have to tide ourselves over until the end of 2012, supposedly the end of the world.

For the record, I doubt that this will be one of those movies that will blow your socks off, but I look forward to it anyway because it looks like it's going to be a lot of fun for two reasons. Firstly there's the obvious; The creative liberties taken with the iconic United States president Abraham Lincoln, whom even in real life had a reputation as a badass. Secondly because I immensely enjoyed the new Sherlock Holmes movies by Guy Ritchie, and the action in Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter looks to be similar.

Well, that's the impression I got from the trailer, anyway. We've all seen Wanted [2008], so it's pretty safe to assume director Timur Bekmambetov knows his stuff.

I have to admit, I didn't think it would reach our shores at all given the fact that it's a British production, and Daniel Radcliffe being the only household name. But then again, horror films sell pretty well around here (regardless of quality), and everybody loves Harry Potter, so I guess it's only a matter of time.

But since I couldn't quite elaborate on certain points at the time, I decided to split it up into two, which in retrospect wasn't that bright an idea. But what the hell, at least I finally got around to finishing the second part. So here is the continuation to another thing local films like to do that annoys the hell out of me.

I feel cruel sometimes. But hey, at the end of the day, I am a customer...

And yes, I know not all local movies are like that. So don't bother reminding me.

That is, after all, largely the reason why we turn on the television. I'm not proud of what I'm about to say, but I was at one point a fan of Hell's Kitchen. I don't know why. It wasn't because I felt like it was more "genuine" than others of its ilk.

But of course, watch any reality TV show enough and pretty soon you'll catch on, and you can no longer tell which season is which. This video below pretty much captured it all.

Cast: Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds, Vera Farmiga, Brendan Gleeson, Sam Shepard
Genre: Action/Thriller
Rating: Teen
Excerpt: "A top notch Action flick, although perhaps a little lacking in the Thriller department..."

Synopsis

Matt Weston (Ryan Reynolds) tries his best to lead as normal a life as possible with his girlfriend in Cape Town, South Africa. But working in a volatile environment with the CIA, even from behind a desk, he has to continuously lie to her and himself in order to keep up the facade. Meanwhile, a rouge agent by the name of Tobin Frost (Denzel Washington) who has been off the radar for nearly a decade suddenly shows up, and turns himself in to the US consulate in Cape Town, bringing along with him a secret so great, no loss of life is too costly for the CIA to recover it.

What to Expect
1. Tons of bangs and booms
2. Anybody could die
3. Uh-mazing car chases
4. Elaborate, exhilarating fight scenes

What NOT to Expect
1. Denzel Washington's character to get hurt (But that's good)
2. An elaborate thriller

Very very entertaining, especially for fans of the Action genre

Hahaha... I do apologise about that, I've been working on several other projects and now that I'm done with two of them, I can concentrate on watching movies once more, and also work on my pet project which I had put on the shelf for about a month now. Will resume writing as usual from now. But for now enjoy these funny epic rap battles between movie characters!

Even though I too, don't think much of him as an actor (in fact, I'm still fuming at how badly the Max Payne [2008] movie turned out to be), that doesn't mean I think he has no place in the industry. After all, not every actor out there needs to be Robert De Niro. I thought Wahlberg was fantastic in The Other Guys [2010], playing a straight man opposite Will Ferrell, which was also part of the reason why much of the humour worked.

So you know, Mark Wahlberg is the kind of actor in the same vein as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone, the only difference being it's no longer the '80s, Golden Era of action movies is over, and we have the internet now. But chill out, Wahlberg. Even if people don't regard you as a real actor, you're still entertaining to watch.

Movie Title: This Means War
Release Date: February 23rd, 2012
Director: McG
Starring: Tom Hardy, Chris Pine, Reese Witherspoon ♥, Chelsea Handler, Til Schweiger

Here's a movie I've never heard of before until yesterday, but got really excited about it once I did. Probably because I was a little astounded that I have no knowledge about this movie even though there are exactly two people I really like playing the lead roles; The underrated (but fast becoming a household name) Tom Hardy and my number one favourite MILF, Reese Witherspoon!

Now now, I know that beneath all that big name actors and flashy special effects, the premise does seem to leave something to be desired. You see, the story is about two battle-hardened CIA agents who discover that they are dating the same woman. Few other things tear a friendship faster than jealousy, and our heroes get to experience what's that like first hand as they humourously try to foil each other's attempt to woo the lady.

Here, see the trailer for yourself;

Cast: Dane DeHaan, Alex Russell, Michael B. Jordan, Michael Kelly, Ashley Hinshaw
Genre: Science fiction/Drama
Rating: Teen
Excerpt: "Surprisingly good, primarily because the whole handheld camera cinematography didn't feel like a gimmick..."

Synopsis

Social outcast Andrew (Dane DeHaan) who lives with his abusive father and a terminally ill mother, decides to do something new in his life by purchasing a camera that he's going to carry around with him all the time. This seemingly insignificant decision leads to him cross paths with the popular kid in school Steve (Michael B. Jordan), who also happens to be a good friend of his cousin, Matt (Alex Russell). With Steve urging him on, Andrew records their escapade in a mysterious crater, after which the three teenagers miraculously gain superhuman abilities. Possessing great power but no sense of responsibility, the three of them unwittingly lead themselves down the path to their own downfall.

1. A rather disorienting start
2. Impeccable buildup to an amazing climax
3. Amazing aerial sequences
4. Nail-biting moments
5. The presentation might be off-putting to some

What NOT to Expect
1. A superhero movie
2. A tedious origin story

But I'm not going to lie to you, I was a little bit cautious when I was coming up with the title for this entry. I don't want to give the impression that I do stereotype movies that way, or that I am an Americophile of sorts who looks down on local stuff. Which is why the title originally read 5 Horrible Life Lessons Yusof Haslam Movies Love to Teach you. Not so much about movies made by the said film-maker, but rather I was hoping it would convey the type of movies I'm referring to.
So spare me the lecture on how I should just be thankful, how I should support homemade films, and the ever-so-popular I-don't-see-you-making-any-movie or the more famous variation of it; kalau-power-sangat-buat-la-sendiri. If you're going to throw one at me, I will have to assume that you're still in school or you never grew past it. Or you're a big fat stupid dumb idiot.

I'm just putting this up because I think it's funny. Picture obtained from funnycoolstuff.com

I'll tell you why. Show business is an industry and movies (among other things) are its product. If I go see it, that will make me a paying customer. Don't customers have rights? They have the right to charge me to see the movie, but I don't have the right to say that I don't like it? That's about as stupid as being told off by a restaurateur to "cook for yourself if you don't like our food" when you comment that your dinner is unsatisfactory.

You just don't do that. You just have to live and let live, and accept the fact that not everybody appreciate the same things. When it comes to these things, not only I don't appreciate them, I plainly loathe them altogether.

Even though he was far from being the first to inflate or deflate for a movie role, Christian Bale's reputation of going for the extreme is almost legendary. I still remember how he went from being as leathery as the wings of a bat, to a certified beefcake after he signed on to play Batman. Don't get me wrong, I am aware that a lot of work must have gone into it.

But I get envious of him anyway because he makes it seem so easy to go from scrawny to brawny, and vice versa. Heck, don't take my word for it, check out this little compilation I've laid down for your viewing pleasure. I would have made a more extensive list, but Photoshop isn't at my disposal for the moment.

Of course, by now it wasn't exactly news even to me, but it did gave me an idea for an entry. I thought about putting a list together about my favourite unscripted scenes in movies, and that was when I came across this video.

Normally I hate it when it happens, like somebody was way ahead of me. But then again, I'm not exactly always ahead of the curve, so that's expected. Plus, the fellow made a video out of it, and that beats whatever presentation I was planning on doing. So I thought I'd just share it with you guys, and yes, the aforementioned improvised scene in The Usual Suspects is in it too.

Movie Title: Men in Black 3
Release Date: May 24th, 2012
Director: Barry Sonnenfeld
Starring: Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, Emma Thompson

It just occurred to me that film studios have been doing a lot of sequels, haven't they? I guess it's because I've spent so much time looking for diamonds in the rough, I inadvertently overlooked the fact that there never was any real shortage of it. In fact, out of ten of last year's highest-grossing films, nine of them were sequels, so it only makes sense that the same trend is going to carry on for many years to come.

Is that a bad thing? Generally speaking, no. In fact, this year alone I'm looking forward to see Wrath of the Titans, and also Underworld: Awakening, slated for release this coming Thursday (Ooh Kate Beckinsale ♥). Here's another sequel I'm adding to the list, made ten years after its predecessor, it's Men in Black 3.
