Hey all!
I am in the process of opening up a second store called Mommy and Me clothing. It has taken some time but it is slowly coming together. The store features matching Mother Daughter outfits available in custom sizing.
I am so happy to be finally doing this - it has been in the back of my mind for a while and it is great to see it coming together.
I think it is such a unique bonding experience for any mother daughter relationship. Oh, and no cheese-ball stuff either. I am sticking to trendy styles!

Good to Go Eco is a mother-daugther team who have been searching for and creating eco-friendly products to help people live the lifestyle they desire. They make products out of washed, re-claimed fabrics chosen for their design and style.
When they use new materials, they try to stick with organics.

A great example of this are their Cup Cozies. A cup cozie simply wraps around your mug that allows for maximum heat resistance and insulation (and helps your hands from being burned when your cup is too hot!) The awesome thing about this style is that it features an elastic band and button fastener that will fit around many mug handles in all different sizes. Even the buttons used on the Cup Cozies are recycled!

Friday Eco-Fabulous Seller - Mary Ellen from Mary Zoom Boutique!

Mary Ellen sells handmade accessories that are not only functional, but sustainable.
Her designs are all handmade out of reclaimed natural fiber fabric that is 100% cotton, wool or linen. "As you can see from my shop, I repurpose thrifted and cast-off garments that would otherwise be destined to landfill oblivion."

Natalie from Recupe Fashion recuperates old, unwanted , end of the line stuff and turns them into new and beautiful items. Everything she sells is Earth Friendly. She takes old material and turns them into new items ... now THAT is recycling! She will repurpose everything in order to give a second life to another item. It is beautiful! Her shop has a lot to offer with a large variety of recycled goodies!

You will find Tea Wallets and hankies (made from vintage shirts and sheets), little fabric bags which are great for jewelry storage and gift wrapping (also made from recycled fabrics.) Her headbands and key chains are a unique find made with fabric left overs. "When I make aprons it's the same, I use some shirts, sheets, or whatever I can find that I think will be useful for me in the fabrication of the aprons."

Natalie loves to crochet and offers a variety of these things also. "I love to go hunting to buy some cotton yarn, weather I buy it in balls from left over projects, or take shirts apart. I do roam flea markets and yard sales like crazy and support Etsy shops by buying from sellers who supply what I need."

Online Etsy boutique Rosy Und Posy is run by a mother / daughter duo from Vancouver Island in Canada (Yay Canada!) This is a boutique that really knows what it is to be green!

They handcraft and sell reusable cotton sandwich and snack bags that are lined with 100% unbleached muslin for a completely 'plastic free' alternative for packing your lunch in.

Not only do they sell these bags but also have cloth lunch bags and silverware caddy's so that there isn't any wasted when you are done your lunch. "Just pack it at home, wash it up and use it again tomorrow *grin*."

Melody from Kinder Cotton makes eco friendly baby items. She sells bibs, shoes, burp cloths, hats, hooded towels, washcloths and wipes.

Her items are adorable, super soft and high quality. Most importantly, all of her items are made from fabric that is organic and fair trade certified.
Organic cotton is grown without the use of chemicals or pesticides. Traditionally grown cotton accounts for 25% of the worlds pesticides.
Although fabric with a continence costs a little more, you can be rest assured that 'the people who produced the fabric we paid fairly and not exposed to harmful pesticides, fertilizers, or dyes.'

When Nicole buys crafting supplies, she is environmentally aware. Some are made of something that was reclaimed; like the Silk Sari Yarn she uses. She also rescues items from being thrown away; like the Guatemalan sashes. If it a vintage item that wants to be re-used; especially the buttons she uses, she takes every opportunity to recycle it.
Not only does she stick to the 3 R's (Recycle, reuse, reduce) but she uses eco-friendly products too; like the renewable tagua nut wood. Her ceramic clay beads or silk yarn made from banana fibers are all natural materials. Finally, she also uses local materials like the apple wood that she grows and prunes herself.

"Then I also apply those sensibilities to how I package my products- both in presentation and shipment." Jewelry goes into handmade draw string bags that will be cherished and re-used by the new owners. "I try to find packaging supplies that are made from recycled materials and that would also be easily recyclable or reusable by the recipient." Nicole reuses packaging materials as extra measures: such as bottle caps, gently used bubble wrap & envelopes, paper & plastic bags and colorful pasta boxes.
With that in mind, she never compromises on the beauty of the presentation as she wants to keep everything looking lovely and on a professional level. "I love what I do and I want it to show :)"

Lastly, Nicole tries not be excessive about anything because she believes that being green is about being humble with all resources !

The wonderus mysteries of Vinegar!

Yummy. Vinegar on French fries. One of my favorite things! Not only do I love vinegar for my food, but it is a great natural ingredient that helps eliminate all kinds of scary toxic cleaners, and does other amazing things too! Here are some of my favorite tips.

Cleaning

1) I think everyone knows by now, that vinegar is a great glass cleaner. It rarely leaves streaks, and does an amazing job! This method is cheaper, more effective, and better for the environment than using any generic glass cleaner.

2) Vinegar is great to run through your coffee machine. It gets rid of all that gross mineral buildup and you don’t have to worry about chemicals getting into your coffee system!

3) Vinegar is also a great disinfectant. It is a great replacement for bleach or any harsh cleaning products.

4) Have pets? They have accidents too, just like children! Spraying Vinegar on pee spots (especially on carpets) and rubbing it in with a rag eliminates the yucky odor and helps get rid of the stain. Helps eliminate harsh carpet cleaners.

5) Have a stinky smell in your house/apartment/room? Fill up a bowl or glass with vinegar. Put it in a safe place (where it won’t spill) and watch it suck in the odor (the color will eventually turn from clear to yellow or brown) while giving off fresh scents of vinegar!

6) Want to avoid using wasteful SOS pads? For stubborn baked on foods/grease, soak dishes in 1/4 cup of vinegar, and hot hot water. Soak for an hour. Come back and see the grime almost lift off the dish.

7) For cleaning interiors of stoves and stove racks, use 1 cup to 1 ½ cups of vinegar mixed with hot water. This eliminates using harmful aerosols.

8) Putting a bit of vinegar in the bottom of your garbage bin can help keep pests and insects away.

9) Did you get annoying glue stuck to your hands? Wash them in a bit of vinegar. It will help the glue soften before you use soap and water.

Natural Medicines

1) Suffering from a migraine or a headache? Put some vinegar on a wash cloth and place it on your forehead. It will make you feel a lot better.

2) Feel like you have an ear infection? Swimmers Ear perhaps? Swimmers Ear is a fungal infection, and almost every type of fungus is quickly and effectively cured with vinegar. Try making a solution of 50% water and 50% vinegar. Drop it into your ear and wiggle it around. Make sure it gets all the way in. Results happen fast.

3) Do you get clogged sinuses? Boil some vinegar and place in a cup or a small bowl. The vapors will help un-block the infection due to it’s aroma.

Lolaness makes their boutique green by printing every product on a minimum of 50% PCW (Post-consumer waste), and recycled paper. They also focus on offering products that require no shipping at all. If you have a good printer at home, you can "get away with printing your own packing slips and mailing labels from a beautiful custom design that was emailed to you rather than having it printed and shipped. It eliminates all the waste involved in shipping a product."

If Lolaness has to ship something, they always use recycled packaging in the form of recycled boxes and repurposed containers. They avoid using Styrofoam peanuts or other non-biodegradable materials.

How to recycle coffee grounds

Let’s face it. Life would suck without coffee. The person who invented coffee is a genius. Not only is coffee great for waking up our tired minds, but there are many things that can be done to recycle the coffee grounds which usually end up going in the garbage.
Try out these fun tips! You will be surprised…..

1) When times are tough, re-freeze used coffee grounds and then use them again to make another pot of coffee. This can be done up to 3 times. (The more they get re-used, the less strong your pot of coffee will be.)

2) Coffee grounds can be used as a natural fertilizer. They increase the nitrogen balance in your garden. Put them in your compost. Not only do they help break things down, but they help keep smelly odors limited, and keep skunks and pests away.

3) Add coffee grounds when planting or replanting plants, trees or shrubs. The coffee grounds help keep the moisture contained in the plants, and help the plants seek moisture when dry due to lack of rain or watering.

4) Coffee grounds make a great organic cleaner! Put the coffee grounds down your drains, sinks, toilets, tubs, sewer drains etc. They will help pull out hair, buildup, grease, etc. What the coffee grounds will do is cling or coat to the gunk, which eventually sucks it down the drain. This is a great way to reduce nasty harsh household chemicals.

Are Fireworks Good for the Environment?

So I went to see fireworks last night in celebration of Canada’s 142nd birthday.
They were so beautiful. I remember sitting there in a daze of complete awe. Just watching the many different colors light up the sky makes the world seem so wondrous. I think it was the best Fireworks display I have ever seen. It was a great show, it lasted about thirty glorious minutes, and when it was over the crowd was cheering, obviously in the same frame of mind that I was.
When the fireworks ended, and hundreds of kids were screaming with excitement running back to their family car, while everyone else was rushing and honking at each other to get out of the parking lot, I patiently waited to avoid any of the thrilling conflict that surrounded me. It was then I looked up into the sky, where to my disgust, I saw firework residue floating around in the air, almost like we were standing under a war zone.
That got me to thinking. As beautiful as the display was, and how it made almost every person watching it feel ‘at one’ with the environment, how harmful was it, really?

Fireworks get their ostentation from various chemicals; chemicals which are toxic to man kind. Fireworks contain metallic compounds which is what makes them colorful. Gunpowder is what makes them explode into what looks like glorious confetti. They often contain radioactive, carcinogenic or endocrine-disrupting substances. These things creep into our natural environment, such as soil and water. The residues from our fireworks turn into toxic rain and smog, which get into our lakes, rivers and bays. A lot of these chemicals are relentless to the environment, as they do not break down.
Statistics show that about .03% of the planets toxins come from fireworks, every year. That seems very little, but if you add up all the years fireworks have been available, plus all the years to come, it seems … well… wrong.
Although this bothers me, it probably will not prevent me from going to see them again. Even if I decided to boycott these types of events, I would still see them if I were to stand out on my balcony. So, I doubt I will ever stop going to see them. There is just something too magical about a black sky lighting up at night, plus, it makes me smile.
Happy Birthday Canada. Hope you enjoyed the pollution we decided to get you. I know we did.

Product Review - Conscious Boutique

After blogging about the Eco Friendly Etsy store, Conscious Boutique, the owner, Jason, was very kind to send me a little gift from his store. I received the coolest notebook ever! I am so impressed! It is so well made! Mine is in a pastel green, and has a lovely upcycled picture of some flower buds and butterflies! It is the perfect size - I can slip it into my purse (the big purse or the small purse LOL!) yet it is still big enough to make notes - whether it be inspirations, important information, or sales tracking for when I am at craft shows!
The packaging it came in too is so unique! It came in a pink fused plastic envelope! Instead of using wasteful tape to seal it, it has been stitched together! It was so pretty and thoughtful that I didn't want to open it!
These little notebooks are not only great for fellow crafters, but would also be great for gifts (everyone always needs stationary!)

A few years ago, he began a quest to minimize his personal impact on the earth. This led him to the wonderful world of recycling, upcycling, and making things out of

His shop motto is "Handmade. Responsible." His goal is to think about
every aspect of the things he creates, and to be as responsible as he can

GREEN BUSINESS OF THE WEEK!!

Off The Hooks sells a variety of items such as crocheted and knit accessories, yarn and eco friendly goodies!

Shop owner Ashley spins her own yarn, often from local producers and farms. She upcycles and reclaims a lot of yarns for many of her items. She takes unwanted fabrics and turns them into "fabric yarns". She hand dyes her fibers and yarns with non-toxic dyes. She also uses minimal packaging when shipping her product, and loves to reuse packing materials. Not only is this shop eco-friendly, but it supports the local economy!!

For those of you who don't know too much about me, I would just like to say that I am obsessed with being 'green' (and I love etsy lol). It is clear to me, that I am not the only one! I have joined a wonderful group called 'Team Eco Etsy' who shares wonderful ideas about ways to be kind to the environment. You can check out their website here

How to get stains out of silk

Here is an eco friendly way to get *some* stains out of silk. All you need is
1) 1/2 a cup of laundry detergent
2) 2 teaspoons of white vinegar
3)8 cups of cold water.
Mix the ingredients well. Put the silk in the solution, but do NOT soak it. Rinse it well. Roll the silk in a towel and iron it while it is still damp. Hang to dry.

Vintage Fabrics

Don't you get so excited when you go shopping and see that one truly unique piece of vintage fabric or clothing staring right at you saying "Buy Me! I need Love too!" ?
Your heart starts racing, your palms are sweaty, you are so excited that you almost start to jump up and down. You then notice the stranger beside you. You notice that they are looking at the EXACT same spot you are. You also notice that they are also doing a little jig. But then you see that same glimmer in their eyes which makes you panic. Your brain starts to think 'RUN RUN! GET THERE FAST! GET THERE NOW!' Before you know it your feet are moving very fast, you become short of breath, and you have knocked down every bystander. ESPECIALLY that crazy person with the weird look in their eyes.
Your sweaty hands grab it...but uh oh...it has slipped from your fingers and has fallen to the floor. You quickly look up. You see that crazy person picking up their pace trying to reach for it. You wipe the sweat from your palms onto your jeans, grab it, and run to the cash register. Your head is thinking 'Sweet victory is mine!!!'. You wait your turn in the line up. In the midst of inspecting it you here 'NEXT'. You carefully place it on the counter. You pay for it, feeling sweet relief. You walk out the doors knowing that you made it out alive. You take it home, not letting it leave your sight. You put it in the washing machine, careful to follow the care instructions. Careful you will not ruin your precious find. You wait patiently until it has dried. You take it out. You do your thing. And then you notice. "WHAT IS THAT???" Your head starts to race. You take a closer look at it. Yup. That is definitely a huge stain that has been embodied in the fabric for what looks like years. Sigh. You think, "What do I do now?"

This is what happens to me every week. I am going to *try* to post every weeks about eco friendly ways to get stains out of vintage fabrics.

Inside the Playground.......

Planet Playground is my on-line store through etsy.com. I sell infant and children's wear made out of recycled fabrics, and organic fabrics.
I love making infant and children's wear. I think it's because in a way, I never want to 'grow up'. I have so much fun mixing and matching fabrics. I try to make all my designs unique, fun, spunky, and sometimes even breath taking.
I am very much into recycling almost anything I can. I think it is great, it is an easy way to reduce unnecessary waste. I'm not going to sit here and tell you that I am the perfect environmentalist, I try my best to do what I can, and I feel like the tiniest things can help. We are all human, and sometimes it is hard to 'be green' 24 hours a day.
This is why I choose to make garments out of recycled fabrics. It is one step closer to living a greener lifestyle. I take beautiful old fabrics like vintage chenille, vintage laces, vintage hankies, sheeting etc and make them new again. All of these items are pretreated and cleaned of coarse. I also love to tear apart old clothes and make them new again. It is so much fun.
I am also getting into organic cotton. For those of you who didn't know, organic cotton is grown without the use of chemicals or pesticides. Approx 25% of the worlds pesticides come from traditionally grown cotton. It is very hard to find resources to buy organic fabrics, and it is very expensive for a small store like me, which is why I am currently focusing on recycling fabrics at this time.

I am the designer, seamstress, merchandiser etc etc. My parents (who live 4 hours away) are a big help with this business. My wonderful mother is the one who finds me most of my unique fabrics. She also gives me suggestions when I have room for improvement in my store (and she is my mother so of coarse I listen to her...most of the time lol) My father is my business adviser who gives me tips and advice and the most interesting stories of when he first started up his successful business many years ago. And then there is my wonderful boyfriend who drives me to see my fabric buyer and business adviser and escorts me to shows where we sell our product.
It is a great team. And it shows through our product.
