Some of the memories that belonged solely to me, some I shared with my beautiful mother and daughter, some with other family members and friends that had become a part of our family throughout the years. The words of Shakespeare seemed so apropos:

“All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time
plays many parts,His acts being seven ages."

I imagined my father as an infant, a young child, the baby in his family. I could see his bright, kind eyes and his handsome smile. I knew he was quiet as a child; he was always busy studying his surroundings; noticing everything that most would miss. One of his classmates during the services, said to me, you know, “me & your dad, we were the quiet ones.” He was so tall to me, but in reality he was a little fellow but he embodied all that a man should be, so he stood 20 feet tall.

He played football in his youth and starred in all his school plays, but when he wasn’t doing a job in the limelight he was content to be the silent observer. In describing my dad in my younger years, I always would write that he embodied the phrase “walk softly but carry a big stick” – He never made a lot of noise/fuss about anything and when he spoke it’s because he had something important to say.

He liked to talk about his days as a rookie with the NYPD, and how "bad ass" he had to be on the Tactical Patrol Force in the 60s and whenever watching Al Pacino in "Serpico"; he never failed to launch into stories about his days at the 66th Precinct in Brooklyn. "Yeah, it was really tough those days, a lot of corruption" and ofcourse I would think to myself "sure, Dad, sure."; thinking I can't imagine him hurting a fly. Although, he grew up hunting and fishing, he would go all out to nurse an injured bird to health. He had such a gentle nature; yet you knew that he was not one to be messed with.

I often asked my dad to tell me the story of how he met my mother in NYC. He, from Beckley, WVA and my mom from Wichita Falls, Texas met in their Apartment Complex in Queens, NY. He told me he observed my mom for some time, walking her collie everyday and he decided he’d like to meet her. He decided to be original; he would approach her while she was doing laundry that way she’d have to engage in conversation. He asked her “does your dog bite?” and my mom in her ever so sarcastic/snarky manner replied “He has teeth, doesn’t he.” After that day, neither could recall a time before the other. They were together over 40 years, married 36 of those years. I was fortunate to be blessed with two loving parents that were partners in every way and committed to building a family.

Dad while working as a NYC Police Officer often moonlighted to make sure his family didn’t go without. He was loved by his partners, employers, and his family. While growing up, I can recall him making his home open to all of his family. If a nephew needed a place to live, if a niece needed help, his great nephew needed a car… I never heard him utter the words “no” – If he had it and you needed it, it was yours. He was a baby brother who often acted as the “patriarch” for the entire family. He offered his time, his wisdom, his home, his money and all of himself. He was selfless when it came to his family. As a young man, he remained on the road traveling to WV, Pittsburgh, VA or wherever his family might be to look after them, spend time with them to maintain close ties. He loved his family dearly.

I remember bringing several friends to my parent’s home in Georgia when I was a freshman at Fisk University and my dad and all the guys went out and took a spin around Atlanta. They got back so late, I questioned my classmates “where could you have been with my father all this time?” and they said “Please, your pops is cool; he can kick it with us anytime.” I recall thinking then about all the many layers of my wonderful father.

He was full of surprises and believed in taking risk. He said things like "you can't win big in life unless you're willing to put it all out there and take a chance."

As he aged, life’s storms were not always kind, but he remained smiling and undaunted. He was always thinking, planning and when asked how he was feeling, his response would more often than not be, “I’m kicking but not high” Yet, he always managed to get the energy to play with his beloved grand daughter, and in true grandparent fashion he spoiled her always. He referred to her as "PaPa's little girl"; his adoration and devotion to her had no limit. As he had with me and my brother, he loved her selflessly. He understood the true meaning of love and needed not to ever speak the word, as his actions told the story of his love day in and day out.

As I walked out of the church at his funeral and saw the faces of the many family members, friends, the many flowers, the cards, the calls of all whom had the blessing to have him touch their lives. I knew they all knew that he embodied the love of GOD and lived his life in love. I think about the quote regarding The Measure of a Man "Thou hast made him a little less divine, a little less than God, and crowned him with glory and honour". My father was a devoted husband, loving father, exceptional grandfather and incredible friend to all who knew him.

Today marks one month since my father has passed. Over the Memorial Day Weekend, my family and I went to just sit/place flowers at his grave and tried to wrap our mind around it all. It seems just yesterday, we were talking, laughing, making plans and now we are trying to navigate this life without the nucleus that made us whole. We cry, we feel like screaming, we talk and nothing fills the enormous hole in our hearts.

I know that death is a tragic fact of life and that no-one is exempt of such heartache, yet it is no less life changing. His sudden passing has been a true wake-up call about just how fleeting and fragile this life truly is. I have always prided myself on sharing a smile and a kind word with a stranger; but have taken those I love and who love me for granted. I'm reminded that every second is a gift and we must live our lives as though the next is not promised. It may be cliche, but it's so true. There are no do-overs. Cherish the moments, the routine, the stuff that seems in-significant; take a moment to absorb and appreciate the blessing of all that it really is.

As I looked around, the lines were full of diverse audiences, all ages and races. My immediate thought was that I was so glad Oprah and Tyler Perry got behind this story.

I read the book in 1997 and purchased a copy for my mom immediately and recall writing something in the hardcover jacket like "Thank-you for being a wonderful mother and grandmother." When I read Push in 97'; I felt as though I had grown up in such a sheltered life at the time I didn't know anyone with a story as tragic as Precious Jones. I debated on whether or not my daughter should see the film due to the abhorrent physical abuse in the book. I actually suggested that she read it some months back because she is an avid reader, but she declined. Anyway, I finally decided it was an important story for her to see as the character Precious Jones is around her age.

In my opinion, Lee Daniels did an excellent job and the casting director deserves much praise by doing a phenomenal job in adapting the book to film. The writer of Push, Sapphire did an excellent job of addressing the various factors that play crucial roles in the survival or the deterioration of a child and his/her future. The film specifically addresses failures that exist in governmental/state agencies, inadequate schools, welfare system, inadequate parenting to the cruelty of peers and the indoctrination of self-loathing that defines so many young people. It's an important story that illustrates that no matter what one may face if they look inside, they too can PUSH through. When the film was over, myself, daughter, the two older women beside us and the cute couple at the end of the aisle just sat still. It was extremely HEAVY though hopeful. As we walked out my daughter asked me if I needed a HUG. I could definitely tell that it had a profound impact on her. I think it reminded all viewers of the profound impact you can have on someones life by just simply being kind and caring to your fellow human being.

I don't want to give anything away,it was a great film and I definitely recommend it.

Regarding any criticism - I'll just say that, I do wish that quality films of color with POSITIVE/HAPPY story lines would garner the same attention/backing/distribution.

Good Hair - I enjoyed the film a couple of weeks ago and didn't quite understand the number of people walking out in the middle of the film. As I thought about it later, Chris Rock did give the audience the idea that AA women are the only ones who go to extremes or pay absurd amounts for hair maintenance, which is simply not the case. I always quote, I think Richard Pryor - Make 'Em Laugh and Slip the truth in - but to Chris I'd say let it be a well-rounded, 360' truth. It's an issue that plagues all women putting more value on their external appearance than what's going on internally sometimes. I will say the film made me decide yet again not to revisit the PERM, I just recently put one in after five years but after the "soda can" experiment; I think I'll stay away from it. He showed the ostentatious Hair Show yet didn't touch on the beauty of a Sister Saturday Social at the Salon. I've had two of the hairstylist featured in the film both Jason and Derrick do my hair down through the years and unlike their EXTRA film appearances both are very talented, fun hair stylist. While in the salon, I've met and exchanged pleasantries with women from all walks of life and it's actually a very warm experience that was absent in the movie. I still say hair is nothing but an accessory and women reserve the right to wear it however they choose. If they are trying or hoping to be someone else then it most certainly deserves some examination.

Waltz with Bashir - I rented this film the other night and was unable to sleep after watching. I can't imagine that I could have sat through it had it not been done in animated form. The last minute or so left me paralyzed and overwhelmed with a sadness with the haunting images of the genocide, news footage of victims in Sabra and Shatila during the invasion of Lebanon in 1982. I recommend that anyone reading this watch and think about the devastation of war. Remember that the violence sanctioned by law helps fuel the violence that is not.

Latest Books Read

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_RkxiZRN_C_g/SwBGTHE8gRI/AAAAAAAAAW0/MpzJYaZec2A/s320/The+Bastard+of+istanbul.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5404396846975844626" />

I thought Elif Shafak's did an excellent job of story-telling by creating very vivid characters and demonstrating fictionally how life can often unravel yet remain hopeful. Although the novel has very heavy themes, genocide (Armenians in Turkey,1900s),familial betrayal, abandonment,loneliness; The author is able to make it somewhat bearable by letting things slowly reveal themselves. All the characters are multi-dimensional, each with something left unsaid.

I'm not surprised that the story is a perfect example of the incredible strength of women and the weight that we must carry within society and also how the youth must live with decisions that were made before they even enter the world.

I'm so glad I picked up this book. I would definitely recommend it.

"The oppressor has no use for the past. The oppressed has nothing but the past."

The Shock Doctrine - I finally finished this book, I think I've lost the 41 members that belong to our online Book Club. It's a must read.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 212px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_RkxiZRN_C_g/SwBLGOuXGGI/AAAAAAAAAW8/HV5dHuPukD0/s320/shock_doctrine_us_hardcover-preview.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5404402123248441442" />

http://www.naomiklein.org/shock-doctrine

I awakened my daughter with a nice size goodie bag, a card that when opened played "My Girl" by the Temptations and she was all smiles therefore I was also. Off to school she went with 24 cupcakes in hand to distribute amongst friends/peers in her fav. class or at lunch and I to work. Here's where things change rather quickly. Perhaps it was the enormity of the day, daughter's b-day, remembrance of 9/11, scheduled employee appreciation social, several interviews throughout the day. Have you ever been in a situation where you are always kind to someone(s) and no matter what you do/say they just don't like you? Whenever my friends or daughter have shared such a scenario, I usually respond "Kill 'em with kindness" or "you're only responsible for your actions, so be nice and wear joy." - Let's just say for a few minutes, I forgot that very good advice this past Friday. My emotions went from being upset to actually crying. WTH???? I know. Who knows what really provoked such a reaction...but I felt terrible... That is until I left for the evening packed my car and got on the road headed further south to enjoy daughter's Birthday Weekend and Party with friends and family. My daughter was pampered for the day, she went to N'Seya Hair Salon and got dolled up, met up with friends and later enjoyed a party at Dave & Buster's. Her aunt and cousins spoiled her; they surprised both she and I with such incredible gifts. We just wanted to spend time with loved ones as she and her cousins have celebrated their b-days together since birth because they are only a month apart. The gifts were to her, like the cherry on top of a very perfect sundae. The weather was fantastic and she had a great time. We made it back home to prep for the next day and tune into the VMAs.

2009 VMAs

"The below pic was a sign that the night might go badly"

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 229px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_RkxiZRN_C_g/SsvD2EtI3DI/AAAAAAAAAVs/IxjW35z__0w/s320/Kanye+and+Joe+Jackson+sharing+the+bottle+of+hennessey.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5389616712822348850" />

I really hate that Kanye West used such poor judgement because I personally am a fan and will remain so. He's an incredibly gifted artist - not only does he write, produce, perform, he paints, he sketches he's truly a beautiful mind. It's obvious based on this last outburst and past behavior he suffers from narcissism, that mixed with the weight of fame, unjust system that exist no matter how great you are based on melanin and now the loss of his rock, his mother. I believe in his mind, he honestly believed his friend,Beyonce was slighted. He didn't take into consideration the feelings of anyone else and showed a serious lack of respect for another artist. Not to mention that Taylor Swift is just a child. I felt more sorry than angry about his poor behavior. As they say "out of bad comes good." - I think this will remind him that everybody doesn't see the world as he does and he doesn't have the right to force his opinion on others. Since September 11, 2001, I've constantly had to remind her that although the world suffered a true tragedy, the day is still a blessed day as it's the day she was born. I went to the store this evening to purchase 24 cupcakes for school. Yes, I still send cupcakes to school. Unfortunately, I never bake them (I only bake w/my daughter). I'm pretty certain, I'll be sending cupcake care packages to college someday soon.

My daughter was so excited about her 7th birthday, I can imagine she was sitting in her classroom on the Upper West Side in Manhattan awaiting the surprise mommy promised. My parents were up visiting and I was working in NJ and before setting out on that extraordinarily beautiful morning; I reminded my mom to "please pick up the cupcakes from Magnolia" to take to her school. As I crossed the GW bridge, I remember marveling on what a perfect September morning it was. When I arrived at work, everyone was glued to their computer and initially I remember thinking/discussing that someone in a private plane must've had an accident. It wasn't until my boss arrived and the second plane hit that we recognized the magnitude of it all. As I tried to call out all of the lines were busy and I was stuck in NJ. My girlfriend finally got through to tell me that she was in contact with my family, everybody was ok and they were walking home from my daughter's school. My mom had decided to skip Magnolia and go to the local PathMark. She was en route to the school when the second plane hit.

I was finally able to catch NJ Transit at midnight as all bridges/tunnels/ferry service was suspended. The next morning my beautiful little girl said "My Birthday is a Sad Day." Devastated by such tragedy, but determined that she not combine the two; I resolved that she would never have that sentiment again.

Dedication to My Beautiful Daughter - 15 and blossoming in to a young lady - Old school but still Oh! so true.

All the news reports about Parents in an uproar, refusing to let their children see/listen to the President of the United States and boycotting schools that are going to air today's message. C'mon People, I've been using expletives all day.

Honestly, I can recall Reagan in the 80s addressing students about "staying away from drugs" , taxes and economic freedom. Hellllllllllo!!!! I really believe it was a speech more apropos for the adults of the nation at the time. Especially since during Reagan's administration, I seem to recall a blown up *CRACK* industry, devastation of many families and an all-round break down of the American Dream. Not to mention it made me wanna put my head down and go to sleep.

President Obama is addressing students on their level, a very personal level. His speech was centered around "personal responsibility." Let's not even address the fact that he didn't address in depth the external forces that confront and lay obstacle for our children today but rather say YES! there are blocks in your way, knock them down and PUSH!!!!

According to various new sources about "40% of fourth grade students are reading below grade level." It's obvious that something is missing. Accountability doesn't only lie with teacher or parent but with the community, society in general and most importantly with the student. I, personally, remind my daughter all the time that a student's job is to "learn" and LEARNING is a verb, an action. What a disservice some parents and school officials committed today. Whether you agree or disagree with the POTUS, to teach your child not to take an opportunity to listen to our nation's Commander and Chief is to encourage a lack of respect for authority, to appear to not be committed to education and the elevation of our children as a whole. I feel sorry for any adult who participated is such Bullshit...Yep that's what I said/wrote because I don't have a better word.

My child has a supportive parent, grandparents and a village that loves and encourages her and she needed to hear:

"There is no excuse for not trying. Where you are right now doesn't have to determine where you'll end up. No one's written your destiny for you, because here in America, you write your own destiny. You make your own future. That's what young people like you are doing every day, all across America." "Don't be afraid to ask questions. Don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. I do that every day. Asking for help isn't a sign of weakness, it's a sign of strength because it shows you have the courage to admit when you don't know something, and that then allows you to learn something new."

Imagine the child who doesn't have a support system, who comes to school has been abused and is out trying to navigate this world on their own. The President basically let our children know this is a partnership, they have to do their part and if the people or systems put in place falter to Keep on Keeping on.

I applaud our President for caring "about our children" and raising awareness despite the HATERS!!! Ugggh!! I'm just disgusted today. I did title this entry RANT, right?

Homeless Children in U.S. Schools

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/06/education/06homeless.html

While so-called concerned folks are running around boycotting the President, the children are in trouble. Families are plagued with poverty and an ever widening economic gap. All of this contributes to homelessness and serious lack of access to the tools necessary for the youth to succeed in this world.

WAKE-UP People!

"While current national data are not available, the number of schoolchildren in homeless families appears to have risen by 75 percent to 100 percent in many districts over the last two years."

I'm often too exhausted to fix it and since we've moved our weekly/bi-weekly hair appointments no longer happen. Therefore after 5 years of being PERM free, I was debating on whether or not to return to the "creamy crack" or simply shave it all off. Both my daughter was mortified at the idea that I might get a FADE,CEASER or just be all out BALD. I debated it for weeks, but the more my teenager begged, the weaker I became. My daughter doesn't have a perm yet she likes me to press her hair at least once every 2 weeks and it is a daunting task. We usually put on a film or two, I hook up the FHI Flat Iron and part off section by section and straighten. Anyway, I continued to sit on it until finally I conceded that a PERM would be the easiest option. Natural Hair is beautiful, however it is expensive to maintain. The products are costly to maintain a beautiful natural crown. I stopped by Sally's Hair Supply and picked up a Perm-in-a-box.

Silk Elements Megasilk No Lye Relaxer Regular

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 225px; height: 225px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_RkxiZRN_C_g/Su2N4yXT8_I/AAAAAAAAAWM/A0R5mdagi0k/s320/Silk+Elements+Perm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399127535018832882" />
I convinced myself that the fact that this box had NO-LYE and had a main ingredient of Olive Oil, it couldn't be all that bad. I actually was pleased with results for all of $5.99. I'm certain that I am not defined by my hair as I simply look at it as an accessory and when not working,you can usually find me in a hat of some sort. As of late the debate on hair as been all the news due to the upcoming release of Chris Rock's film "Good Hair". I don't even know what that term means - "all hair is good hair". I have close friends of all nationalities and every single one of them has done something to amend the appearance on their hair, PERMS to make straight hair - curly, rinses, dyes, hightlights- you name it, it's done. I'm sure, I'll enjoy Chris Rock's film as I am a true, loyal fan...but at the end of the day it's not what's on the head but what's in your head that matters...

Damage Remedy Restructuring Conditioner - I really like this conditioner; after using, my hair felt healthier and had a great shine to it.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 162px; height: 260px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_RkxiZRN_C_g/Su2yQc6q89I/AAAAAAAAAWU/NP4mDjqF7Xg/s320/damage+remedy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399167523997021138" />

LOVE!!!!LOVE!!! Ojon Daily Intensive Shine Treatment - it's great, I can't say enough. We just pop them in the oven for a few and presto... yummy breakfast. Our home favors the cinnamon and brown sugar bagel with a cream cheese filling. I think it's about 200 calories, so not too terrible.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 124px; height: 116px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_RkxiZRN_C_g/Su3DXHrgm8I/AAAAAAAAAWc/DiaHFQC_7vc/s320/bagel-fuls.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399186330253040578" />

I can remember being glued to my television looking at the devastation and angered day by day at the lack of assistance offered to the many in need. The overwhelming emotion I felt led to an argument with my then neighbor, who said something like "President Bush did all he could to help those people, they should have left." My mind was blown by the young lady, who had very little sympathy for those who remained and were simply unable to just pack up and drive/fly out of the region. I started to become disillusioned with people in general.

However, my daughter and I started to put together care packages, we asked neighbors, I asked students to donate canned goods, toiletries, grocery cards whatever they could afford to give and they did. We packed them up and loaded several boxes on tractor trailers located in front of the Georgia Dome. When we arrived and joined the long lines of cars and people ready to do whatever they could to assist all in need. It was apparent that regardless of the government's lack of care, the people would mobilize to take care of our fellow human beings.

The 2005 displacement of hundreds of thousands of New Orleans area residents following Hurricane Katrina and the rapid privatization of public services in the city, i.e. housing, schools; sealed the inability of some to ever return to their homes. I've been overwhelmed with sadness hearing stories about the actual progress that has taken place in the Gulf Region for the disenfranchised.

It was great to hear the President's Weekly Address this morning - We'll hold you to it Mr. President:

"Government must keep it's responsibility to the people so that Americans have the opportunity to take responsibility for their own future." - President Obama

I along with millions mourned the passing of Senator Edward Kennedy known as the "Lion of the Senate."

As I listened to heartfelt tributes, it was obvious that the world lost a truly great human being. He was born to a life of privilege, lived through tremendous tragedy and still managed to stand-up and be the patriarchal figure to the Kennedy Clan and to FIGHT and provide LIGHT for so many who did not have access. He was lauded for his extraordinary ability to reach across the table and work with Republicans to get important legislation passed that would have a positive benefit for the populace as a whole.

As friends posted their thoughts on face book, I think one summed up things best. "Many of us are overwhelmed with sadness at the loss of the person and we also are mourning the work he would've accomplished in this Administration."

President Obama said "For five decades, virtually every major piece of legislation to advance the civil rights, health and economic well being of the American people bore his name and resulted from his efforts."

I continue to pray that Senator Kennedy's words will ring true "For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die..."

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 253px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_RkxiZRN_C_g/Sts77axlC8I/AAAAAAAAAWE/AA_dGNkTxZg/s320/sen_edward_kennedy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5393970870691892162" />

I can imagine the expression I must've had, my mouth wide open in pure awe; just *smh*

Yet, just as I was drawn in and compelled to watch his rise, tragic fall and current fight to stay afloat while representing Washington D.C.'s Eighth Ward as councilman; I guess his constituents down through the years were caught in his whirlwind and made the decision to ride it out and see where it would land. I'm not sure, I completely understand. I, like his ex-wife, found myself asking "is this for real" from time to time.

Hamlet/Othello - have nothing on Mr.Barry. If you haven't checked it out, you should.

Summer Reading

I've been slacking with my New Year's resolution and I've been trying to play catch up with my book reads. I even joined an online book club, so I would remain on point. We've only completed one book read since we set up the page in June - Sister Souljah's Midnight and it sparked such heated debate but it was just an OK read. I think most were in favor of the book choice, because we loved The Coldest Winter Ever but the prequel failed to impress the majority. However, after the debate that followed, I thought for sure we'd all dive in to the next selection. not so much.

We chose Naomi Klein's The Shock Doctrine, and it truly is a terrific book offering a lot of insight, yet in my second attempt to finish it; I've finished two other reads since I started my required reading. A girlfriend texted me just the other day to ask if I finished the book yet, as she was having difficulty trying to finish. Why is that? It's not what one would call a difficult read. Perhaps, it's the serious weight of the subject matter.

In the last month, I've finished J.California Cooper's Life is Short But Wide and Taylor Branch's Parting the Waters and enjoyed them both.

Life is Short But Wide - I have to admit,I was drawn to this book simply by the title, so simple yet so true. I'd never read this author before and was pleasantly surprised by her storytelling ability. I found myself drawn into each character in the small town of Wideland,Oklahoma. Amidst life's tragedies there is always so much beauty, if only one is able to recognize it. I found myself hanging on every word, routing for the triumph of the main characters. The book did what a great book should do in my opinion, provoke a range of emotions, I laughed aloud and was brought to tears. It transported me to another time and place and left an imprint on my mind.

Parting The Waters - One of my favorite things about living in the town that I live, is that certain authors, books, go on sale for $1.00 very often and I am able to immerse myself in something great at very little cost. I noticed this book in one of the $1.00 bins and decided to splurge. It's actually the first book in a three volume series. I couldn't stop reading this book either. I have such love and adoration for MLK,Jr. and to read yet another interpretation of his journey was a true pleasure. I loved that Branch starts the book acknowledging the brillant ministers that came before Dr.King and layed a foundation. The folks on whose shoulders Dr.King stood to bear the role of leadership. I didn't embrace everything the book offers, but I'm glad that I read it.

Rainbow Encounters - I was lucky enough to drive through a Rainbow last Monday before returning to work and the day I returned there was yet another. Does that mean my Pot-O-Gold is not too far away? I sure hope so :-)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_RkxiZRN_C_g/SpyOyBrh56I/AAAAAAAAAVc/DQ6tzx4G7Ew/s320/005_5.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5376329045269145506" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_RkxiZRN_C_g/SpyQp6bfx-I/AAAAAAAAAVk/H_vWXx6zWI4/s320/019_19.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5376331104907151330" />

Her death has been one of quite a few loved ones in our immediate cipher over the last months. Death is always so very difficult, there is such a finality a harsh reality to things like your inability to touch your loved one or pick up the phone and simply hear their voice. Yet because one's soul never dies, their spirit is always with you.

As I sat through the services, holding on to my girlfriend & my own mother while mourning with other friends and family; my heart was full with the Beauty that remains. The preacher officiating called the service a "Home Going Celebration" and although I did not feel that joyful mood that most would attach with a celebration; the beautiful spirit of what remains was overwhelming. Many of her mom's friends shared memories of her love for life and kind heart, some brought photos of their entrance w/her to the Freshman Year Class of 64' at prestigious Fisk University and her grandchildren wearing expressions that they were fortunate to inherit from their beautiful grandmother due to the many hours they were blessed to spend with her, created artwork to enclose in her casket. Following the funeral, we gathered for a repast to break bread, talk and surround my girlfriend and her family with love. My thoughts were of the large brush strokes that one leaves with those they leave behind and the painting one can create with those brush strokes/memories is a masterpiece that can be created time and time again. I'm hoping my girlfriend will embrace that opportunity in the midnight hour when the loneliness sets in of losing her mother. I've had four friends lose their mothers in the last year and for me the very thought is unimaginable. I lost my uncle and my cousin over the last months and have said farewell to many that I love in a physical sense. I think what gives me the most PEACE is keeping an eternal flame lit by sharing all that was beautiful about their lives time and time again.

I'm so exhausted and to quote the Bachman-Turner band I know I "ain't seen nothin' yet."

I have to wonder why the GOP is desperately using "scare tactics" to appeal to the masses and increase public skepticism about health care reform. Many are using distortions of facts and good ole' polarization to guarantee failure of reformation of a system that is clearly broken.

But let's not give the GOP all the credit; WTH is my party doing. Democrats STAND UP!!!! At least those that oppose, stick to the same crazed script and they're consistent. Those that are laboring for failure of health-care reform are very clear with their target, continually vilifying our nation's President.

Why am I not being bombarded with an overload of information as to why this reform is a must, the abc's of the proposed plan and how the public option would mean the insurance companies would be forced to lower their rates in order to compete. Where are the "shock jocks" for justice and social good? Not just denying the misinformation but breaking down in simple detail the aspects of our healthcare system that are broken and explaining the plan for resolve.

I've been reading Naomi Klein's "Shock Doctrine" again, I can't help but to wonder if now is not the time to seize the moment and introduce a "universal health care system." However, I'm certain there's much I don't understand about the "single-payer" system and how our nation would fund it. Perhaps by stopping the increasing military budget and bringing our troops home from the bogus War-Operation Iraqi Freedom?? Geez, sorry, there I go getting off target.

If you've visited this blog before then you already know that I'm a huge supporter of President Obama. I am encouraging anyone and everyone I know and some I don't to encourage their Congressmen to support reform. But it's my civic right and responsibility to rationally question all efforts and try to push for what I believe would be the best plan for not just myself but for my fellow citizens...

Reminder - "Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could only do a little."

I really enjoyed the film. I'm sure that I've mentioned, I sometimes have a special affinity for movies made in NYC. In addition to that fact, the movie is based on a true story about a young woman searching for purpose who decides to write a BLOG chronicling her journey as she tries to cook all 500 recipes of Julia Child's book "Mastering The Art of French Cooking." Both Meryl Streep and Amy Adams were delightful and engaging. What did I take from the film besides being sufficuently entertained? A reminder to step boldly, if you fail, then fail big. Right? I mean, why not. I've also decided to invest in Child's cookbook. I like the idea of enjoying bread and wine with every meal... very appealing.

The Ugly Truth - Although, I've been put off by Katherine Heigl because of her loose lips and her threatened departure from my dear Grey's Anatomy; I decided to check out this romantic comedy. To be honest, I thought it could've been a remake of "He Said, She Said" and not done as well. It was cute, nice date film but I could've waited for the video.

Public Enemies - This film had all the right components...Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, and Marion Cotillard; great actors. Michael Mann did a great job in making Dillinger a romantic,tragic figure and making the viewer feel like a great work of art was unraveling on screen...but it just kind of fell flat in my opinion. I could've waited on the video.

The Proposal - I loved this film; something about Sandra Bullock's fun, quirky characters even when she's portraying a B#*^$,are always likable. It's a great, light-hearted, refreshing kind of flick.

Transformers 2 REVENGE OF THE FALLEN - Not my usual movie choice, but I promised to take my daughter. It was action packed and for my entertainment there was some eye-candy, i.e. Tyrese and Josh Duhamel. However, I do not recommend this film, stereotypes and unnecessary sexual innuendo. I thought the review on the blog Invisible Woman summed the movie up quite well.

The Taking of Pelham 123 - Denzel Washington and John Travolta - Enough said.

Wolverine - Another daughter & me day out and I have to admit, I kind of enjoyed Wolverine...

Obsessed - Since I'm a huge fan of Beyonce; Idris Elba and I share something special in my head and because I long to see some representation of people of color at the movies; I couldn't pass up this film. It was entertaining enough, worth the DVD check out!!!

I can't believe the school year is right around the corner and along with my daughter; I too will also have to say goodbye to the laziness, breezes that feel like perfection and just the absolute charm of each day. Summer has a sort of magic to it...

As usual in preparation for the school year, I've already begun looking in my Sunday paper, cutting coupons and picking up a few school supplies here and there.

While we're still in a recession, I'm hoping my teen doesn't expect a new wardrobe to greet the school year; it's year #2 in High School.. Ahhhh Youth....

So far, the only thing my daughter has requested is to trade in her lovely backpack for a new hip messenger bag. She's decided the backpack was more of a "middle school" look and she's on the next stage.

While working with a serious budget, I will be doing the following:

1. Spending a weekend navigating the Thrift Stores - The saying "What's old becomes new again" is so very true. We will be searching for hip, trendy clothing with character...things that carry a story with them. My daughter has acknowledged that the 80s are making a come back - leggings, bold colors,ripped jeans, colorful kicks and punk rock style is currently all the rage. She's also enjoying embracing her individuality. The Thrift Store is the new Bergdorf's; ok not really but there are many benefits that come along with patronizing a Thrift Store. We'll be economically responsible by saving money and environmentally friendly; does it get better?

2. As always I will be checking out all coupon sites - that's right - no shame in my game. If she needs to pick up a few items, I will do my best to make sure she is able to do so.. (that's what we mommies do) Not to mention, tax free weekends are going on all around the U.S.; so if you're able it's a great time to get your school shopping in.

- BradsDeals
- Wow-Coupons-
- Printable Coupons
- Shoppersneeds.com

3. My favorites gadgets/buys/picks for the back to school season:

If you and your children don't already belong - Join the library - perhaps, I'm just corny but its one of my favorite afternoon hangouts. As one journalist stated in hard economic times our libraries provide "stability and continuity"

http://lists.webjunction.org/libweb/Public_main.html

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 102px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_RkxiZRN_C_g/Sn8dynQ4F_I/AAAAAAAAAU0/BD52lhS3NW8/s200/FreeLibraryCardButton.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5368042036219353074" />

Loving the Mark my Time Digital Book Marks - Parents can set a daily reading time and allow our children to act independently and get to it. I think they're about $9.00 at Target..not sure.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_RkxiZRN_C_g/Sn8fPwEWxMI/AAAAAAAAAU8/i1mzYnopN-k/s200/41lwffSElHL__SL500_AA280_.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5368043636310590658" />

I also checked out Time's Back to School Top 25 and I think my daughter could definitely use and like #23 - Philips HF3490 Wake-Up Light with dock for iPod alarm clock and if I fall and bump my head, she just might get it.:-)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_RkxiZRN_C_g/Sn9aL7XzJZI/AAAAAAAAAVU/JMtXye8W99U/s200/HF3490_60-GAL-global.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5368108441811494290" />
Lastly, one of the most difficult things during the school year are lunches for the week. My daughter doesn't eat school lunch or have access to a microwave and a menu of healthy meals daily becomes a challenge. As with Gymboree years ago, I sorrowfully said goodbye to Oscar Meyer lunchables as well. My child is actually at the age to pack her own lunch but I'd like to provide some healthy options. Last year, she started taking salads, BLTs, chicken sandwiches,PBJs,cold grilled cheese and fruit always. This year, I think, I will introduce her to egg salad, tuna, hummus and pasta salads. Any suggestions, please send them in. Here are two of my favorite finds for school lunches for right now:

Love,Love The Container Store - Klip-It Lunch Cube

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_RkxiZRN_C_g/Sn9WJ9UDj-I/AAAAAAAAAVE/Y-WAxwpKOzM/s200/lunch+case.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5368104009926414306" />

Honey Roast Peanut Butter

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 91px; height: 187px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_RkxiZRN_C_g/Sn9Y-dPI2CI/AAAAAAAAAVM/qUKPcBOio3Q/s200/Pan_products_jan_DS_07.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5368107110872176674" />

Before, I share my thoughts on the weekly address. I just have to say, I didn't think it was possible to find yet another reason to respect our president. Quite frankly, the man's honesty and humility should be applauded. Not to mention that he showed the world what kind of friend he is as well. I'm still at a lost as to why Professor Gates was arrested and really hated that the so coined "beer summit" needed to take place. BTW - I noticed the media has backed off since the Beers and of course the news of yet another Boston officer calling Gates a "jungle monkey" hit the airwaves.

Our President did not back down from his original opinion, yet had the courage to concede that his choice of words were not the best. He then took time out of a busy schedule to engage in conversation about the issue. I quote James Thurber, "Discussion in America means dissent." The mere fact that he participated in a dialogue over something very real built in the American psyche is a dissent to business as usual. President Obama is not the typical Washington Insider. I find the fact that he's a novice quite refreshing.

HEALTH CARE REFORM - I too get sidetracked. Back to Health care Reform; I just finished reading Klein's "Let's Put an End to Sarah Palin-Style Capitalism" and I think she makes some very valid points. I agree that we are at a very decisive/crucial moment, a tipping point if you will where things could go either way.

I keep going back to MLK Jr.'s words "It really boils down to this: that all life is interrelated. We are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied into a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. We are made to live together because of the interrelated structure of reality."

I don't get how those that are insured would think as a nation we shouldn't be working toward an affordable health care plan for all. A unhealthy populace has a very real, hit you in your home effect on those with the best of health care. It is not a economic question first, but a moral imperative and it's frightening that many don't see it that way. I don't think that mode of thinking makes one of socialist thought, but one a true Patriot who wants the best for the nation as a whole, who doesn't want America to rank 37th in the world for health care, or rank 50th in life expectancy compared to other nations. Would some really try to thwart the President's efforts to improve our health care system just to see him fail? My fellow citizens we have work to do, making members of Congress accountable.

Opinion from Obama's personal physician:

http://www.commondreams.org/print/45312

President's Weekly address - August 1, 2009

It looks like all systems are a go; But,"One never knows, do one?"

Incident with Professor Gates sparks National Debate - Ok, so I exchanged emails with my dear friend the other day on this issue.

Because race is mentioned in our exchange, I feel the need to let you know, my dear friend is indeed a Caucasian man.. I'll just call him Anonymous White Male.

My friend-Anonymous White Male- Quick note; Now that the corporate media outlets are being utilized to pander to racist White America (as always) over the Gates issue, (even NPR was scrambling to present Officer Crowley in a positive light while saying nothing about the frustrations of being Black in a white supremacist society), I am eager to see how Obama responds to the attacks against him over his comments. Will he back down on his comment that Officer Crowley acted stupidly and pander to white racist amerika as he did with the Rev Wright incident and Eric Holder's comments about amerika's cowardly dealings with issues of race? Or will he BOLDLY stand by his initial statement? We'll see.

My responses: - After hearing the story and listening to the officer, I have no doubt that he abused his power as I have no doubt that Prof. Gates was nasty with the attitude of "Do you know who I am?"

I thought the President used a poor choice of words in his initial response...If he was going to weigh in,he should've said something like "based on what I know, in my opinion, it seems as though the police officer acted inappropriately" -

I'm surprised that he made that statement based on his legal background.

Because, as an attorney to preface a statement by saying you don't know all the facts. The President said " I don't know, not having been there and not seeing all the facts, what role race played in that [Gates case]. But I think it's fair to say, number one, any of us would be pretty angry; number two, that the Cambridge police acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof that they were in their own home; and, number three, what I think we know separate and apart from this incident is that there's a long history in this country of African-Americans and Latinos being stopped by law enforcement disproportionately. That's just a fact." -

That was mistake one, as an attorney, having studied how to use people's words as ammunition... I'm surprised he didn't realize that statement would come back to bite him in the rear. Secondly, he has to depend on Police Departments around the nation, world to act as part of his security team.

Historically, Policemen have stuck together and enacted vengeance on those they do not like. It was just a poor choice of words.

In addition: Two other scenarios - To deescalate the situation - Officer Crowley once confirming ID, could have simply said I apologize Mr. Gates/Professor Gates, I was simply responding to call. Glad to know all is well, have a good night.

As well as Mr. Gates could’ve said, good to know my neighbor is looking out, I appreciate you officer….

Basically, it sounds as though it could have been handled differently by both parties… Regardless of how insulted you are to be accused of breaking in your own home, “If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you. If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too;” - gotta love Kipling. Every year I give my daughter this poem, it is true and time after time we all forget and lose it.

Although I didn't phrase it as eloquently, I think the President also sees things as I do based on his statements.

I also don't think the President owes anyone an apology - it was a bad judgement call on both sides. However, considering Officer Crowley is the public servant in question who has a license to kill should the circumstances deem so - I, personally, would like to know that he is exercising the best judgment on how to handle a situation. All powers need to have a check system in place.

I needed a break from life, I promised my daughter a mini-getaway and honestly I needed an excursion from my regular rituals, needed girlfriend time and quality time with my love (NYC).

As, I've been carrying on a serious romance with NYC for way over thirty years now. I love the way the city moves me, the way it always seems to whisper exactly what I need to hear, the people, and the ultimate confidence I feel when I'm pushing through. Perhaps it's because its my home of origin, perhaps it's because as Martin Gladwell suggest in his book BLINK (I think???) that if you have positive experiences you gravitate to those places time and time again to recapture that feeling.

In any event, we truly had a ball with friends. Our first night in we stayed in the Bronx with old friends and although we had every intention on getting out, the Summer Rains kept us in with delicious Margarita Pizza, a good movie and just layed out playing catch up. We hadn't seen each other in over a year and felt good just to share; reconnecting with friends is good for the spirit.

We spent a lot of time eating...I'd like to not think it had nothing to do with greediness but the fact that I hadn't eaten a real meal for almost two weeks due to oral surgery so I needed to play catch up. Although, my girlfriend did notice I have indeed lost some weight, I have a bit more to go...I'm still chugging a jug...

HIBACHI,SUSHI AND DRINKS W/FRIENDS @ Benihana

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 249px; height: 158px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_RkxiZRN_C_g/SmtfmW6uPhI/AAAAAAAAAUU/6Y9DGdoLaf0/s320/benihana.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5362484893906255378" />

Prior to heading for NYC, I sent out an Evite to quite a few friends, fam in the NY, NJ area that if they were interested and able to please meet us for lunch at Benihana. Why, Benihana? It's my daughter's fav. restaurant.

We don't get up as often as we'd like, plus due to the fact that everyone is spread throughout the Tri-State area we are never able to see everybody on our mini-excursions...

I thought it was a good idea initially, many folks were unable to make it. It ended up being three of my friends and two of my daughters friends so we filled a table.

I felt special, as one friend picked up the entire bill. I was actually kind of shocked. It was one of those unexpected, nice surprises life sometimes throws at you... Anyway, I actually had some folks get mad at me and tell me that I should've made my way to them??? Feedback,please if you come in town for a visit shouldn't your friends try to come to you?

My daughter finally got to see Harry Potter, she'd been pouting since we didn't go to the midnight release on the 15th, but I'm sure she enjoyed it better in the state of the art Regal theater in TSQ with her friends.

Ladies Night Out - I went out with my girlfriends to a club in the Boogie Down Bronx. I never go out in the evening, never. I had such a ball, dancing and chatting it up with such interesting characters, making it back in and talking about the evening until I simply knocked out. I realized, I'm not as old as I sometimes I think I am...

Evening of Karaoke - If I didn't want to maintain my anonymity on this blog, I would so post the pics of the wonderful time we had in the Village. Aside from the delicious menu and unlimited drinks at the restaurant - we were entertained by great shows and tarot card readings. Not to mention that my very shy daughter after enjoying a few Shirley Temples - heavy on the grenadine compliments of our waitress Blackio got up on stage and did Karaoke in front of a crowd. I was so proud of her...Most of the time only a select few are allowed to see her light, gregarious side. After a few bars with Blackio, I too joined her on stage to sing Alanis Morisette's "Ironic." We stepped out of our regular box and had a fantabulous time.

We also stayed in Williamsburg spending time with our dear friend, who by the way has now added fantastic ribs to her menu @ Peter's Since 1969.

We mainly just spent time talking, addressing the reality that faces us all and enjoying each other's company.

We didn't really do any touristy things, or anything that might be considered spectacular, but we just enjoyed a weekend away w/friends. It was a great long weekend, nothing too exciting, just nice.

Lou Dobbs said something to the effect that the President's speech was something he thought could've been said forty years ago. He said "It was almost as if so little had been accomplished since the war on poverty began in 1965." Mr.Dobbs then went on to criticize the President by stating "It took him 24 minutes to get to the issue of individual responsibility." WTH???? It never ceases to amaze how some are so far removed from what is happening in the REAL WORLD day in and day out...

Admission - Indeed, individual responsibility is a very real thing and should be addressed on a daily - NO ARGUMENT FROM ME. If you don't fight for yourself and the quality of your life, why should anyone else? But you have to know how to fight and what to fight for... many are handicapped straight out of the womb.

FACT - Not enough is done in addressing some of the very real oppressive circumstances that exist, the racist indoctrination that permeates various elements of society all over the world and to suggest or pretend that these issues are trivial or minuscule in light of our nation's first Black President is ridiculous. I too like to speak in terms of good and bad... or those that just seem indifferent instead of RACE; as I possess a "we are the world" mentality and love all people... I think in terms of plurality yet many do not. As a black woman, it would be credulous to think that we are now living in post-racial America although many strides have indeed been made.

Lou Dobbs, Give me a break - I'm not surprised by your thoughts due to your ongoing war on Mexicans in America...Note to self.. try to avoid tuning into Lou, especially during the work week.
