What You’ll Need:

• Drill or screwdriver (with reverse setting)

• New magnet kit (includes magnet, plate, 2 round-head screws, 1 flat screw)

• Your replacement shutter panel (if needed)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Identify the Old Magnet Assembly

Open your shutter panel to locate the magnet and magnet plate — the magnet is attached to the shutter frame, and the plate is attached to the panel. If your shutters are older, the magnet housing may be dry rotted or cracked (as seen in the showroom example Wesley uses in the video).

Step 2: Remove the Old Magnet

Using your drill in reverse mode, unscrew the two screws holding the old magnet in place. You may see the magnet fall apart as it’s removed — that’s normal with age.

Set the old parts aside and make sure your screw holes are still intact (they usually are).

Step 3: Unpack Your New Magnet Kit

Inside your replacement kit, you’ll find:

• One magnet (plastic body)

• One flat metal plate

• Two round-head screws (for the magnet)

• One flat-head screw (for the plate)

Tip: These are the exact parts used in Indian River Shutter’s in-house manufacturing, ensuring a perfect fit.

Step 4: Install the New Magnet

Hold the magnet and one round-head screw together with your drill. Then line it up with the existing holes in the frame and secure it in place.

Repeat for the second screw.

Wesley’s Tip: It’s easy to install backwards by mistake the first time — but once you do it once, you won’t forget again.

Step 5: Install the New Plate on the Shutter Panel

Line up the flat plate where the old one was removed on the panel. Using the flat-head screw, secure it in place through the center hole.

Step 6: Test the Connection

Gently close the panel so that it connects with the magnet. You should feel a secure click — just like new!

What You’ll Need:

• Small hammer

• Razor cutter

• Needle-nose pliers

• Nylon shutter pins (including spring-loaded type)

• Replacement louver

• (Optional) Touch-up paint or wood glue

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Work from the Back Side of the Shutter Panel

Open your shutter panels and always work from the back side, never the front. This protects the face of the stile from damage.

Step 2: Disconnect the Louver from the Tilt Rod

Tilt the tilt rod and locate the staple that connects it to the damaged louver.
Using your needle-nose pliers, gently grab the staple and twist it back and forth until it comes straight out.

Pro Tip: Don’t remove the staple from the tilt rod itself — it’s smaller and factory-secured.

Step 3: Free the Louver from the Stile

Next, grab your razor knife and insert it between the louver and the stile, just above the nylon pin.
Give it a few light taps with your hammer to break the connection. The louver should come free easily.

Step 4: Prepare the New Louver

Take your replacement louver — it should already have holes on both ends.
At Indian River Shutter Company, our louvers are precision-crafted with an off-center hole to help balance tilt rod tension.

Important: The longer end of the louver (from the hole to the end) should face the rear of the panel.

Step 5: Install the Fixed Pin Side

Start by inserting a new nylon pin into one side of the louver.
Insert that pin into the stile where the old one was removed.
Gently press or tap the louver into place.

Step 6: Install the Spring-Loaded Pin Side

Take your spring-loaded nylon pin:

• Insert the heavier (non-spring) end into the stile

• Insert the spring-loaded side into the other end of the louver
  Push the louver up until the pin compresses and clicks into place.

Now your louver is fully seated between both stiles.

Step 7: Reattach the Tilt Rod

Locate the staple you removed earlier from the old louver.
Turn your tilt rod sideways to line up the holes.
Insert the staple back through the tilt rod and into the new louver.
Hold it in place and allow the glue to set.

Final Thoughts
