Been a while since updating my Blog, a little too long perhaps

A lot and not too much has happened honestly, been working on one of the polycount challenges to which I have had moderate success, though without any repercussions to not completing it within a time limit its been rather difficult.

As a result I have decided that the reason to this is not because I lack vision, but because I have lacked skill to achieve the shapes I want in a 3D space, even when it comes to complicated assets such as Victorian era architecture or small details. What has held me back most was not knowing how to retopoligize to use shapes from ZBrush into Maya and then into a game engine.

This lead to me deciding to take an immense financial risk and attend an unknown even to me called “Industry Workshops”, which was being hosted within the Vaults at Waterloo station.

Going to this event was probably the best decision I have ever made, meeting industry people from all sections of the creative digital arts, even Titus Lunter was there. During my time there and talking to these famous artist rely game me some insight into becoming more creative and how to get around lack of motivation due to lack of skill and speed.

One of my most interesting moments was talking to the employees of Splash Damage and the Art Director of Creative Assembly’s Total War series. Both had extremely good input in my portfolio and tips on getting into the industry and how to go about presenting my work, as well as talking about studio life and culture.

All this has motivated me to dive into the arias I need improvement on and work on improving those skills before attempting anything that I do not know how to attempt to create.

A lot of information to process and use, but for now I’ll be working on improving my ZBrush skills and creating more detailed Environment assents for games.

Hear is the results of my improvements so far.

Fairly messy Topoligy, apparently if your not vertex painting or vertex lighting the scene much then its OK, so long as you clean up some of the tris and clean it up a bit.

Next was some PBR practice so I created a simple Rock Cliff texture that came out much better than I expected.

Now that i feel that i have got the skills in PBR and modeling, I want to work on creating Organic Trees and Foliage and create something along the lines of a Roman ruins.

OK so I’ve been working on it for quite a bit more. Did another lighting overhaul and added a post processing box to edit the lighting more. Had a very big problem with rendering out screenshots within UE4 after I had increased the lighting setting in the post processing box, so I had to take the screenshots using the old FRAPS way. Also managed to render out a small cinematic which I think brings out the reflections and lighting more compared to screenshots.

Added in some “incense pedestals” as well as redoing the throne to blend in better with the rest of the scene, a better way to describe it would be for it to match better with the style of the scene.

OK so it’s been a while since I updated the blog. So far quite a bit into the Throne Room contest and trying to get things under way, and there are some extremely talented people within the community. The objective, for me, is not exactly to win (although that would be nice), it is to learn something from the process of making something specific and to a deadline.

While there is a polycount link to what I have been doing, I’ll also include the images here for you to see.

Well I’m not shore where to start, a lot has happened in the last two weeks, even if I don’t progress any more with the events I have learnt a lot with my skills and ability’s so things are still rely good and motivating at the moment.

Off Job-seekers now so that frees up A-LOT of time to work on my portfolio, but another thing has caught my eye recently. The Throne Room.

The competition that is, you make a Throne room, with a Throne of course, but I like that idea of working toward a deadline and giving it your all without saying “there’s no set date I can come back to this”. I decided to do a test to see if I had it in me to come up with something original based of modernized 1950’s New York Rockefeller style with elements of modern visualization style and an ever so slightly hint of Halo’s Forerunner style, mainly the colour and slight shapes.

So with this in mind I came up with a rather basic Throne, I wanted the business look rather than the all-powerful overseeing overlord, since it far into the future I wanted a more “reserved” look, responding to E-Mails more than watching over subjects constantly. Though of course the room itself will not lack any grace to it.

Here’s the test throne, I’ll probably start working on the rest of the scene now and entering the competition.

So far I'm quite happy with the results, it might be changed in the future, but for the moment I'm quite satisfied with the mood this is giving off so far.

Well it’s a new year and with a new year comes a new blog update with progress.

I have recently acquainted myself with Allegorithmic software, all of Substance Designer and Substance Painter, as well as the awesome looking (yet to be confirmed) B2M3 which turns photo textures into PBR ready textures (how awesome is that!!). I have yet to need that part, but since it was in the steam sale I decided I might as well take the plunge and give it a whirl.

So far the learning curve in Substance Designer was not as steep as I had thought. If you know how Unreal Engines material works then it’s pretty much learning a new UI rather than anything major. In essence, it’s Photoshop with Unreals Material UI and Quixels Ambitions. Between the two I think there both on par with each other, though at the moment I think dDo has better control over its masking compared to SD (at my current knowledge, it’s probably going to change)

In the scene so far I’ve added the Fire Exit door with its own texture, my error was that I should of made the “Fire Exit” singe a plane so that I can use the texture over and over again, guess I’ll have to correct that next time. I have changed the lighting setting since it was in the wrong setting the whole time, so the lighting in the scene has improved considerably. I have also added a SD roofing to the scene so that it has some “smallness” feeling to it. Light baking has increased in speed considerable since the change which is nice. Lots of more things to get a hold of, speeding up now with the scene and getting it all together, I recon ill slow down when I hit creating the bed for the scene and the other smaller objects in the scene, though I think it’s probably won’t be a big deal.

My current objective is to get one section of the scene done so that I can put it on my portfolio and have some diverse content on there so spice things up on it; otherwise the feedback from potential employers is going to be the same every time I apply (white noise).

Onward here are some shots of the updated content. Roughly 2 or 4 hours spent on textures to make them look nice and fitting for the scene, SD took longer because I was just starting out (ceiling of the place) but so far so good.

Ill be making Wire and string textures to use soon for Lights and so on. so far im happy with the results so far.

December the 27^th

Been probably too long getting round to updating this blog with an update or so, times been a little thin but I have managed to put some character into the scene.

Right now I’m playing around with the lighting and UE4’s material instances to see if I can make textures more modular. Especially when it comes to small objects such as Cans, one of the thoughts that came to mind was to have the objects on one texture sheet. While this sounds like a nice idea, I’m not shore that would increase Draw calls in the scene as the texture would be associated with the same 3D objects. All in all this requires more research; I’m currently creating a texture sheet with objects in the same aria of the scene into one to see if this improves workflow and optimization of the scene.

I am also working on the lighting in the scene, not shore if I’ll get it perfect in the end but I’m spending too much time obsessing over it.

For now, here is the updated scene to date.

Definitely need to get into more ZBrush related stuff as creating high poly objects in it are so far pretty amazing to see, though i just need to get my head around the UI of the software and it should be just a matter of skill rather than lack of experience soon afterward.

Recovering and moving forward

Recovered now to the point where I can put in my lenses, so I can progress with the project, still hazy and it would be until 9 months time until they discharge me.

Job seekers telling me I have to apply for just about anything I see, even senior positions as I have a “chance” if getting it apparently, but I think it’s more like reputational suicide that stretches to the long term, especially for a graduate. Moving on to the project update.

Managed to solve a problem where Quixel experts would create everything with an extremely strong reflections, all I had to do was to turn off the textures “sRGB” in UE4 and it became almost realistic to the Quixel render.

Managed to furnish out most of the kitchen aria, with textures to go with it, the only problem I am having with it is the various “Object had wrapping UV’s” error, so far I have only managed to solve 1 problem where I re-imported the Table mesh after force deleting it from the scene. Everything else remains the same with the error, even after changing the Light Mapping UV’s. It might be that I’ll have to delete and redo the light mapping UV’s or delete history and make shore that I’m not exporting the FBX with history enabled. This error might also be the reason that the Fridge handle does not seem to cast a shadow on the inner part of the kitchen.

So in a nutshell, everything from the lights to the cooker have been created, noticed a scaling problem which is a downer, but it should be ok since it hardly noticeable within the kitchen. I believe that the next step is to start populating the scene with objects such as plates and object, the ones scene in the kitchen anyway, the idea is to do thing methodically and then move on to the next peace. Update 26^th October

It’s been a while now, so it means that I can update with a larger amount of information.

At the moment I’ve been focusing on trying to complete the environment with as little unique textures as possible so that I can have a more modular texture set. Looking at Tor Frick’s technique of creating modular textures, he uses strips of the texture within a 512 by 1024 (or the other way round) and revolves the scene around them. While I have been trying to replicate the process within the unreal engine, there are some elements which need to be unique, for example the sink in the kitchen aria. However I do believe that for the next environment I shall try to replicate the process more efficiently, as well as combine the grayscale texture for roughness and metelness into one single RGB texture to save on texture memory within the game engine.

I have also been looking at other peoples techniques on Polycount and have realized that it is more efficient to work on one object at a time until completed until detailed. I shall try this technique out and see if it works for me in terms of productivity. If does I shall move towards that workflow, and continue with that.

At the moment the scene has a moving TV, windows, walls, tables, re-furnished kitchen, and shower base. Right now I am going to furnish out the Kitchen aria completely, then move into the shower section to flesh out the place, and so on. After which I shall decide on the next aria to move into.

Have been around and about lately, ben told that I need an operation on my right eye which could leave me blind, and it’s happening on the 30^th or later, so hopefully I won’t become partly blind.

Anyway apart from that, I decided to do some research to see what other Environmental Artist have been doing on the market place. So I downloaded a scene that Quixel showcased nDo and dDo with. The Sci-Fi Hallway gave me some valuable information as to how I should be going about my scene. And I had realized that I had made some mistakes for the scene.

One of them was that I was using blocks of 3D models instead of planes, which would allow me to use higher resolution Light maps and a consistent amount of texture tailing for the objects. While I have no intention of changing the models right now, for the rest of the scene I have conducted a cull against polygons which cannot be seen by the viewer.

I am also creating the radiator under the window of the apartment. All I need to do is normal map it and texture it and it should be good to go. I’ll be manually texturing this object as I wanted to get the most resolution out of the texture as possible, so I shall be using this technique from now on for any interior environments.

I have also managed to get Maya 2015 LMU.exe to work, after uninstalling internet explorer it managed to get through and get itself up and running, I’m assuming it will work with programs such as 3DS MAX 2015 now too, but for the moment I shall be sticking to just Maya, and possibly will go into Mudbox for future terrain.

Anyway, here are the progress shots so far.

In this I have updated the Material to be animated slightly with another masked texture to give the screen more life, I would like to do more, such as an animated news logo but there does not seem to be an optimal way of achieving such a look with the program. The Scene is also Gray-boxed out so I have a better feel of the final scene.

Been a while since I last updated, although I might have been a little obsessive with almost dayly updates, so I think I might dull it down into larger updates less frequently, or it will look rather boring and uninteresting.

Anyway, moving on, at the moment I have been researching into what I need to do to make my scene more efficient in the game world. I found out that I can literally use the geometry brush to create most of my scene, and convert them to objects; this pretty much solves the time problem, as I do what to get this scene done pretty soon. Mainly because I have spent a while on it now and it should start getting more complete by now. Ill also have to look into mesh/vertex painting to make my scenes more vibrant with life, as in, more realistic and less obvious that the scene is modular.

I’m not feeling ready to present the rest of the scene at the moment as nothing is archly placed in there other than the table since I’ve been doing some research into various tools that I should be looking into. I’ve also been looking into tutorials on making the most out of my materials in UE4, which is necessary. So for the moment ill show off the table and the TV screen that I'm working on.

Creating Textures with nDo and making them moduler

As much as I like to have unique textures for my objects to give them a more lifelike feel, this is not practical for the scene, and modularity is something that needs to be practiced. At the moment after recalling an article I read on Vertex magazine I decided to try and replicate a process of creating strips to use in multiple objects. The result was a success but in use it does create a rather odd outcome with the normal maps when applied to some objects, mainly the bannister where the edges meet, so I had to make the UV’s thinner to avoid the edges having a strange outcome. However the end result is something that I am happy with and should work well, if not then it can still be applied to other scenes in the game.

I have also created another texture to be used for the lower floor of the apartment.

In the end I decided that the texture was way too dark and just did not look in place with the scene that I had in mind, as well as the scene that is in the concept art. At the moment I’m working on one of the stair bannisters, but I think it would be wise to start getting models into the game even though they have not been light mapped. Just to get a scene of scale and where I’m at. It will also help with the placing of object as all I would need to do would be to export over the top of a FBX model and reimport/update it in the content viewer in Unreal.

So anyway hers the updated Floor texture which is looked pretty much exactly how I want it to be, unless at some point I want to change it again, but that shouldn’t be happening for a while yet.

Just got UE4

Well, in the end I decided it was worth the effort to just head straight into Unreal Engine 4. Everyone is using it for AAA games and the PBR is worth learning. So far the UI is a little hard to navigate, its easier but a little bit complicated to an extent but also easier to use, probably just need to get used to using it. PBR looks pretty impressive, and it looks like the general features that I’m used to in UDK are still there. So it’s time to move my entire scene from UDK to UE4.

I am also in the process of updating the metal floor texture with PBR and updated details. I'll have to replace the Normal Map some other time for the moment as I do want to get the scene finished and then work onto the scene to update anything that needs updating.

Stair Compleat

I have been working more and more into the project and moving things into UDK. Going to France tomorrow to see the War graves and the aria where the Battle of the Somme took place so should start up some inspiration.

This was pretty challenging to UV unwrap as I tried to avoid over lapping UV’s. When I decided that some had to be overlapped to increase resolution it caused some problems when it came to putting them into dDo and normal mapping from Maya especially. In the end I relied on nDo to help out. I couldn’t create an object space normal map because of the overlapping UV’s however since there are stairs dDo worked with them despite the disadvantage I was giving myself.

I managed to give the new dDo extra time to work on and experiment, managed to fiddle around more with the program to give me multiple detail masks which I wanted, so it seems pretty good. I think I’ll need to play around more with the setting though in order to give me more fluent details, ill need to find a way of changing the angle of the scratches so that they do not look so repetitive in the scene. Until next time I’ll experiment more with dDo in the future.

Moving into UDK

Managed to get the cupboard into UDK from Maya without having to change the scaling much as I was trying to work in centimetres but export it into meters with the FBX, turns out that was not necessary as it would make the model 100% bigger than necessary, which is confusing since the last time I tried I had to change the entire scene to a larger scene. But anyhow, it seems to be working smoothly for the moment so I’m not going to complain.

The cupboard seems to look ok in UDK, although it doesn’t look too good with PBR maps with an unsupported PBR system, and even when I try to edit the material with all the textures it turns out little results. However it works and when the time comes I can move it into UE4. So its easier to get everything prepped in UDK first and then when I’m happy that everything is working together with light-mapping and so on I’ll make the leap into UE4.

Here’s the preview so far, going to move more and more objects into the UDK scene, I’ll be testing out the look of the flooring too, however since there is a Normal Map problem I’ll have to re-make that part again which shouldn’t take long, but it’s something that is low down on the priority list.

Compleated Cupboard

OK so it’s been a tad slow with the lunch of the website company I work for approaching rapidly so I’m essentially working from 9 until 8 now with a half hour brake, I don’t mind it but I do wish I could work more on art stuff rather than setting up peoples and company’s portfolios for them.

Anyway back to the topic, but the Cupboard into the normal dDo presets and it seems to look pretty good, so I’m happy with it. I think of Quixel should add anything to the new dDo it should be better control over the UI to get to the settings of adding detail. At the moment the normal dDo seems to have better access to add detail in arias where I want them while the new dDo just uses a pre made texture on them and gives more pre-sets to add to them and tells the user to hop on to the next one. Results are OK with it but I think there a lack of features in terms of adding detail like rust and leakages and scratches. It is still in Beta, so I expect more to come, but I hope there is more to come rather than just bug fixes.

Here are the recent screenshots. I’ll be putting it into UDK at some point when I have more objects to place with it as I feel that when there all in one place they will complement each other.

First PBR Test

Been testing out Quixel’s new dDo PBR and getting used to the features, while I think there could be a lot more added to it since seemingly the Legacy version seems to be easier to navigate but also better at giving objects detail (rust and so on). It is in Beta, and it might be that I’m just not experienced enough with it, but I think it has been slightly a disappointment for me. It can create the accurate PBR effectively but with the wired bugs which stop me from exporting into TARGA files and the removal of automatically overlapping the models wireframe in the 3Do, there just seems to be less of what there used to be. Over all it was a decent learning experience and I think once I get my hands on Unreal Engine 4 I’ll be able to get straight into action with creating scenes.

Here is the test PBR. Still need to get to grips with adding detail, but the object is not exactly an industrial object so it feels ok to leave it as it is with the smoothness and the lack of scratches.

More and more

With results from the recent texturing and so on. Things are starting to look quite fancy. At least I hope they will, moving onto the next object which is the small cupboard which also acts as a base for the ladder up to the bed. While this does seem tedious, working on all the small objects which is more 3D artist rather than environment artist, these add the base layer to the scene. And the end result of them is always satisfying.

Speaking of which, plopped the recent pressurized canister into UDK to bake lighting once I did the light map, looking pretty good, will need to play around with the material more to get the most out of it. i tested it using my Chinese environment so that it feels more in place, so far I'm liking the look of it.

One thing I do need to look into is PBR. I am tempted to take on UE4 but with no money coming in its risky, and with Maya 2015 not working ether no matter how much I try to get it working it still bothers me. So the current plan at the moment is to continue with UDK until the project is finished, perhaps take on UE4 after the lunch of “The Dots” website which I am currently working for. Then work on another environment complete with 100% PBR.

Speeding up for Euro Gamer

OK so after some setback with internet and getting a spontaneous internship in an online portfolio company called "The Dots" which will be lunching on September the 25th. Work is getting harder to make time for, particularly since I’ve been working from 9am till 6pm which leaves little time to work on my project. However I have negotiated part days (one day working, the other not working) so I have more time to expand my skills and my portfolio content.

I ran into trouble when I was trying to create a normal map with the pressurized canister I had created since I started out with a low poly and kept it that way. In the end I managed to transfer the vertex smooth groups into a normal map after creating a duplicate model of the object and centring both of them after naming them in the “Transfer Maps” tab of Maya 2014, shortly after creating a Tangent Normal map and an Object Space Normal map. Once this was complete I then used Quixel’s FBX material file to define colour groups to the object to create a colour map. Once these where created I then opened up nDo and defined more detail to the normal map, such as creating the ARMADIME logo and warning sings as well as adding details such as metal plates which have been stuck on.

Once this was complete I then used this to create the colours and detail in dDo. I then added the necessary “wear and tear” to the canister. I did not want it to look too beaten up as this object has not been subjected to elements such as weather, however I did want to give it a slight industrial look as it needed to look “used but not abused”.

OK, im back from the Grand Canyon

OK, I’m back from the wilderness. It is indeed how overwhelmingly large the Grand Canyon is. I was also told I should make “Rapid Simulator 2014” as an Indi game, not a bad idea, but that is far beyond my skill at the moment. Anyway its straight back into working in my portfolio and getting somewhere with my project.

Current plan is to redo the fire extinguisher object or re-texturing it and so a dDo/nDo make over on it as I rely doo need to get into the PBR way of things. Having said this, looking into PBR way of things, it might be that I will have to wait a while before UDK gets updated or re-released to use PBR. Someone on polycount did create a very good material for simulating PBR in the current version of UDK, but it is very complicated and does indeed require the user to recreate a Cube map of sorts for the environment it is used in, which has mixed results. Anyway, this does tempt me to acquire UE4 for this process, however this requires money, money which I don’t have coming at the moment, although it is a relatively small expense, the monthly fee will sooner or later add up. So in a nutshell I am indecisive at the moment with the current situation with PBR and UE4.

Anyway, back to work and updates sooner rather than later.

off to the USA now, ill be back on September the 1st, its a long time but it should ive me some visual ideas along the way. Anyway off to the airport now.

will be travaling through rute 66, and rafting dow the Grand Canyon, and venturing through Las Vagas.

Normal Mapping the Floor

Tested out Mayas normal-mapping, seems to of worked pretty well other than a wired scene appearing in the middle of the normal map like a crosshair for some strange reason. However it does make the normal map result more interesting to an extent, it gives it a more “mass manufactured” look; which is fine but it does get slightly annoying as its not 100% like the concept art.

With the normal map I took it straight into dDo and created a new texture with a metal plate pre-set for the colour and lighting. I then added little bits of detail such as scratches and general where and tear. I wanted the floor to remain fairly clean as having it completely dirty and worn to the bone wouldn’t of looked good. At the moment the plate appears to be slightly too reflective, but it works with the scene, as well as making the scratches more visible in the scene. This should work with the new PBR (physically based rendering) as the Marmoset viewer seems to work that way, but citation needed. Here is the current result with the flooring.

Modeling and Texture Update, Si-Fi Apartment

Another update, at current progress is a little slower than i would like, but being part of two groups is hard, currently creating an air purifiyer for another game project my uni freinds are constructing while trying to do the Si-Fi apartment, which is kinda tricky to manige time for, however, i have had substantion progress with both.

At the moment the fire extinguisher in improving, however I did underestimate it, and mistakes where made. it is looking OK, but if i where to model it again, which is still a possibility, I would change curtain arias of it. But for now it is to an acceptable standers which I am happy with.

here is the current progress with it. I am still laying out UV's and creating the appropriate textures for the object.

The below image is an edited texture in dDo. I added more of a stained look to it which I can manipulate with the UDK mesh painter/poly paint.

Back and Graduated. Looking for work!

Graduation Finished, and it’s straight back to work!

Been too long indeed, Graduation ceremony was memorable, I am indeed going to miss everyone from university, however what it important now is making shore that the degree is worth it.

At the moment I am having extreme difficulty in getting Autodesk Maya 2015 to work on my PC. It’s not that I do not have system requirements or settings that conflict with Maya 2015, its more their end with the Licencing or LMU.exe crashing/ “not responding” and closing. At this rate with the most helpful support ever (sarcasm intended), I will be sticking to Maya 2014. Although it is painful to see exporters for Unity and other features which Maya 2014 lack. At this right Autodesk are almost promoting Piracy of their student software, which is extremely annoying, but if worse comes to worse they might not give me much of a choice.

Another program I am interested at looking at is “Modo”. What fascinates me with it is its combination of hard edge modelling and sculpting. While I will not work into this right now, I believe that it could be very useful in the future as well as become appealing to industry for its cost effectiveness.

Anyway, more in the project side of things. Things are now full on and speeding away, although I do have a holiday coming up to the Grand Canyon where I plan on taking interesting photos of its awesome scenery. So in short, this is going to be a test to see how much I can get done within this last week I have before I am separated from by PC for a long time.

At the moment I have been rescaling the Grey-Box model as the scene was too big, making the character looks like a dwarf. I’ll have to change some of the scaling of objects like the bed as they are too large, this is due to the viewport not matching the perspective which effected my eyeing of the scene. However despite this, coming back to the project after some time away has revealed to me the faults in the scene with fresh eyes, allowing me to fix the project to be more accurate. Here is the updated Grey-Box so far.

Si-Fi Apartment Grayboxed

Just finished Gray-boxing the Si-Fi apartment as well as sketching a basic layout of the place to get a feel as to how the place will look. so far the scale seems just about right, the Corner peace proved rather difficult as i wanted to keep that to the grid as much as possible so as to allow me to import it into UDK as a moulder peace more effectively. Overall the current results are good starting points to model over and replace with detailed models. Most of these models i will most likely go over and just make them more detailed as their base Mesh is ustable to continue with as the project moves on. Time wise this only took me a day, only setbacks where working out the viewpoint perspectives and working out the scale of the room as the perspective of the concept art is rather extreme, however this shouldent be too much of a problem now that the graybox is in.

with Graduation fast apoching and rent and counsel tax (the list goes on for a while) time is strained but there is at-lest some progress coming along.

I also added the UDK character scale of 6ft as a scale to work from.

Maya Graybox, this is the scene I will be working with. Setting everything to grid this time so i do not make the mistake of having objects overlap eachother.

Gray-box Render, not much else to say, but these sorts of renders give a slight difference in view if the scene, switching between KeyShot and Maya helped me get a better scale for the scene.
