Plastic Surgeon targets zero waste

Such has been the surge in interest regarding the environmental credentials to Plastic Surgeon’s cosmetic repair service that, for the second week running, our MD Rob Mouser has been invited to speak as part of the seminar programme running alongside a major exhibition – the ‘gig’ this time being Sustainability Live at the NEC.

For those who haven’t heard about Sustainability Live the three-day event is bringing together exhibitors and experts from all sections of industry, with the common goal of trying to reduce our environmental footprint. Designated areas of the exhibition and different seminar stages will focus on five main issues: including water management, the energy crisis and brownfield remediation.

Rob will step up to the podium in the ‘Environmental and Land Remediation Theatre’ at midday on Thursday to explain to delegates about Plastic Surgeon’s “One Planet” philosophy and how the company’s ability to repair or ‘snag’ almost any building component fits perfectly with the whole sustainability agenda. Waste reduction, in particular, is pivotal to what our task force of more than 100 Finishers is involved in for clients across the country, working in the residential, retail, education, health, commercial and leisure sectors amongst others.

As regular readers of our blog will know, Plastic Surgeon has won a number of awards for sustainability and tackling waste, and Rob’s address will spotlight the way our Finishers’ skills can literally bring building substrates ‘back from the death’, when conventional repair strategies have proved ineffectual.

Not only are we constantly developing new ways of repairing the wear and tear which affects every building site and occupied property, but the sophistication of our IT systems also reveals the volume of construction products we have saved from going to landfill: with the total for the year currently running at over 700,000 kg. And the figure for the past 12 months is an even more impressive 2,253 tonnes.

Rob’s lunchtime slot at the NEC won’t be long enough to cover all the benefits to our ever-widening service, that is also now being taken up by countless facilities managers, but it will provide those attending with a useful snapshot of our efforts. Granite cladding repair helps facilities manager

The Facilities Manager at London solicitors, Hogan Lovells, enlisted Plastic Surgeon’s help to repair an unsightly crack that had opened up in one of the exterior granite cladding panels of their prestigious W1 offices.

Our Finishers had to contend with a busy repair location as well as health and safety considerations such as pedestrian safety, and minimising dust and noise disturbance.

Plastic Surgeon goes live

We’re giving Managing Director, Rob Mouser a few hours off this week from running the UK’s only national cosmetic repair specialist, to enable him to offer delegates at The Facilities Show an insight into just how environmentally-friendly our repair operation really is.

Rob will be speaking on the second afternoon of the three day event that is being held at Birmingham’s NEC: where other presentations will come from industry stalwarts and Government spokespeople.

Taking the UK Green Building Council’s ultimate goal of ‘Zero Waste’ as his theme, he will give a 30 minute address on the advantages of our ‘snagging service’ which can put right non-structural damage to exterior and interior building elements.

Drawing on some of the company’s stand-out contracts, as well as data from our award winning VisibilITy software tool, Rob will demonstrate not merely the huge spectrum of building substrates and components that can have damage successfully repaired, but also the implications in terms of reduced waste to landfill, avoiding the use of fresh material or energy resources, and the substantial financial savings to be gained.

For those of you who would like to hear what Rob has to say first hand, he will be making his appearance in the BIFM CPD Theatre, at The Facilities Show at 12-45 pm this Wednesday, as part of the exhibition’s BIFM CPD programme.

Antique porcelain sinks restored for museum

As you might expect from an institution responsible for preserving artefacts, when Bristol Museum and Art Gallery was in the process of refurbishing its washrooms, the decision was taken to repair rather than replace the damaged 100 year old vitreous porcelain basins: an approach which Plastic Surgeon not only advocates, but is uniquely qualified to pursue.

The cosmetic repair specialist was commisioned to undertake the repair work by Bray and Slaughter, a regular customer of Plastic Surgeon.

Variety is the spice of life

Despite the fact that we at Plastic Surgeon have been out there for a quarter of a century carrying out repairs to construction and building products, it’s surprising that that there are still businesses and people around the UK who haven’t got a handle on the variety of materials we can repair.

Okay, we accept that our name seemingly implies that we should work in operating theatres, but we like it – and feel that it does, in fact, reflect very well what we do. We don’t repair sentient beings, even though if you Google ‘plastic surgeon,’ you will find medical profession – that extends from botox to helping burns victims – at the top of the search under the advertised links for repair work on human beings. The parallels are that we also carry out repairs – though only on inanimate objects – and often the damage is caused by contact with similar objects to those that harm human patients.

People understand French polishing for the surface repair of wood, but we do far more than that with this material. Our repair techniques encompass tackling gouged and scratched kitchen worktops, doors, floors and shop displays, as well as architraving, skirting boards and windows. After preparing the affected area, our Finishers use two pack fillers – sometimes over a cold-weld base – which is used to level the damage before being smoothed down again. And then we replicate the finish – the wood grain, texture, colour and patina – with spray guns, paint rollers and even the finest of artist’s sable brushes. What is more we can do the same for all sorts of stone, including exotic marbles.

Our customers seem to be familiar with the fact that we undertake complete bath resurfacing, but don’t realize that we can also repair ceramic tiles, toilets and shower trays: again carefully filling the scratch, gouge or chip, sanding and then mixing the exact colour; including the hundreds of white hues – blue-white, red-white, green white etc.

Plus, of course, we repair metal items – corrugated roofs, cladding panels and steel baths and windows. While our treatment of plastic window cills and guttering relies on the fact that the material has an inherent memory, so will return to its original shape.

But we also repair unusual materials such as Corian, Perspex and stone, and have even repaired antiques, murals and brickwork – the latter being possible through our especially developed tinting technique.

Another development to our ever-growing range of services is glass polishing. We use a progressively finer range of abrasives with a power sander, which feathers out scratches and chips to ensure that there is no discernable distortion.

From houses to caravans; ships to supermarkets; MoD buildings to hospitals; swimming pools to universities – we have worked on them all …. and await to regale you with the most unusual products and places that we undertake our repair work – watch this space! Titanic repair project meets launch date

The 100th anniversary of Titanic’s sinking on its maiden voyage has created such a surge in interest regarding the doomed vessel, a new museum has been opened close to the spot from where she set sail.

As with so many building projects there was a role for Plastic Surgeon to play in ensuring everything appeared pristine ready for the grand opening.

Repairs on time for Queen’s Jubilee visit to university

The Queen visited the new Exeter University Forum today as part of her Diamond Jubilee Tour.

The new Forum, just a few miles from Plastic Surgeon’s national headquarters, has been built by Sir Robert McAlpine and joins other prestigious buildings at the University where Plastic Surgeon has been involved in a number of minor repair or snagging issues to be dealt with as the handover approached.

McAlpine took the same approach as many other main contractors these days, by calling in Plastic Surgeon’s cosmetic repair specialists to deal with the damage.

Snagging repairs at new conference building

The snagging process precedes the handover of any large building project. Plastic Surgeon is called in by construction companies throughout the UK, to assist with fine finishing and repairs to the multiple items that get damaged during the build.

At the new Edinburgh Conference Centre, working for main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine, a team of highly trained Finishers from Plastic Surgeon helped to speed up handover by tackling a variety of building repair tasks, including damaged laminate wall panels, doors, door frames, IPS panels and ceramic sinks.
