A Dr. Gregg Homer recently developed a laser procedure that eradicates the pigment cells in the iris, making the eye color lighter. Those pigment cells are responsible for brown and hazel eyes- when the pigment is gone, the eye appears more blue. This is the same phenomenon seen in babies with blue eyes which eventually may turn darker. At birth, many of the pigment has not yet formed.

A potential risk of the procedure is the pigment release into the chambers of the eye can cause the pressure to rise inside the eye, a form of glaucoma. Would it be worth it? Time will tell.

Notice there is still a bulge under the left arm- possibly a little bit of breast tissue or fat left behind. Chaz is reported to say that genital surgery may be in the future.

Now many cosmetic surgeons are getting into the iPhone app market by creating tools for patients to learn about procedures and even create digital surgery on themselves.

ModYourBod is one of the first iPhone apps to allow for morphing tools to be applied to an uploaded image. Boost Your Beauty has similar tools, but also includes instructional slideshows on various procedures. And you can imagine what IAugment does.

So far most cosmetic surgery apps are designed for the iPhone, but Android can't be far behind. It will surely be another marketing and informational tool for cosmetic providers, just as every aesthetic practice maintains a website.

Liposuction death yields 15 million dollars in suit

A court in Pennsylvania recently upheld a 20 million dollar award to a family whose member died after liposuction performed by a board certified plastic surgeon. The procedure was performed under anesthesia with a nurse anesthetist. Fat was suctioned from the neck and abdomen.

Liposuction is most safely performed with tumescent anesthesia, and not with general anesthesia. Any procedure with general anesthesia has higher inherent risks. Modern liposuction can be done safely with mild to no sedation with tumescent techniques, as popularized by Dr. Klein, a California dermatologist. Liposuction with a board certified plastic surgeon does not ensure safety.

Dana Delaney on Botox and other PR tactics

Fresh off the heels of her car crash report (did anyone really want her autograph?) Dana Delaney, star of Body of Proof describes an unfortunate Botox experience. She says that her treatment done by her dermatologist caused a problem. Her photo above shows a pretty well botoxed forehead- definitely smoother than her age would seem to dictate.

She states the needle hit a nerve causing a hematoma and that her right eye muscle was affected and is starting to droop. Medically, this makes no sense. An injury to a nerve does not cause a hematoma- blood comes from blood vessels, not nerves. Also, there are no nerves in the face that cause a droopy eyelid- these nerves are behind the eye. Botox itself can affect the eye muscle, but these effects are temporary, lasting weeks to months if the botox travels to the improper location.

It's pretty obvious that this 'news story' is a PR ploy, just like her car accident report. Does anyone really care about Dana Delaney's Botox, or even Dana Delaney for that matter?

Fat is a huge (NPI) topic in the cosmetic world. The holy grail is finding a procedure that reduces fat without invasive procedures. Zerona attempted this with little success (but you can still find doctors that sell this procedure, with a trail of underwhelmed patients left behind). Zeltiq works along the same lines as some ultrasound techniques, but it uses cold to injure fat cells, prompting your body's natural scavengers to take away the remnants. Does it work? It appears to, but very minimally. It may be a good option for someone with a small area of unwanted fat, but that doesn't seem to be the norm stateside. Save the so called "coolsculpting" for Cold Stone employees.

The ice roller (available here on amazon) is placed in the fridge or freezer and it allows you to ice your face down to reduce puffiness, wrinkles, aches, pains, and anything else that ails your face.

Does it work? Maybe it works as well as a piece of frozen meat or a bag of frozen peas.

Surgeons are constantly trying to undo the effects of mother nature. Can we stop the breasts from sagging? It seems that gravity is stronger than the human will in this case.

The internal bra, termed "Cup and Up" attempts to solve this age-old problem with a silicone sling placed under the breast gland and anchored to the ribs. Trials in animals have shown safety, but effectiveness is another thing.
