I was perusing through the web and discovered that there are alot of talented recycled designers out there. Of course, this isn't anything we didn't already know. But unless you use the right search words, they are hard to find. I found that unacceptable.

So my 2012 resolution was to create a website that was a directory of free pattern and tutorials links. By clicking on the picture of choice, you are linked directly to the designer's website, blog or Ravelry page. This way everyone leaves happy - the searcher of free pattern and/or tutorial links and the recycled designer.

Free Pattern - Front Post Pop Tab Plarn Bracelet ..added YouTube video tutorial

A fellow crafter buddy, KristyRecycles aka Textiles4You, volunteered to make a YouTube video of my Front Post Pop Tab Plarn Bracelet. She did an awesome job and I know you'll enjoy it.

My favorite type of bracelet is one made with pop tabs. It is very unique and yet versatile. I'm always trying to come up with different styles.

Here is a pop tab pattern I came up with:

Pop Tab Front Post Bracelet

SKILL LEVEL: Easy

MATERIALS:
·        Crochet Hook – Size F
·        Plastic Yarn: Approximately 2 standard size plastic grocery bags
      o    If using 2 different colors , 1 plastic bag for each color
·        14 pop tabs (consistent in size)

Important Note: Not all plastic is made the same. When using plarn, achieving the desired size or gauge is dependent on the texture, thickness and strip width of the plastic yarn.

SIZE: Diameter – 10.25” around, 3” across
CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Hand wash, air dry

Helpful Tips:

·        Read through pattern instructions before beginning.
·        See ‘Tutorials’ for instructions on how-to:
      o    Double Loop Cutting and Looping method
·        Pop Tab hdcfp: Yo, insert hook through front of same pop tab back around to front of next pop tab, yo, pull back through front of 1^st pop tab, yo and pull through
         all 3 sts on hook to complete hdc st.
·        When using plarn, stretching your work after every couple of rows is important. This will give you a more realistic view of what you have completed up to that point.
      o    Instructions: Grab the band at one end and with other hand grab band at beginning ch row, then give a slight pull.
·       Plastic in general is susceptible to ripping/tearing due to its very nature.
      o    Weaving in ends - it is best to maneuver your craft needle in between stitches and not through a stitch to avoid splitting the plastic yarn.
·        The edged hole of the pop tab will be considered the 1^st hole throughout this pattern and will always be placed under the previous pop tab.

Instructions:
Round 1: Join with a sl st in 1^st hole of pop tab, 2 sc in same hole.   *Grab another pop tab and 3 sc in 1^st hole,

*repeat for a total of 14 pop tabs or desired length to fit wrist. (Tip: If you’re making the bracelet for yourself, this is a good stopping point to measure around your wrist.)

Bring the ends together to form a circle making one more sc in the beginning pop tab. Join with sl st to 1^st sc in same hole. If using a different color for Round 2 - fasten off, weave in end.

Round 2: Sc in same st and in next st, *hdcfp around same pop tab & in next pop tab (pop tab hdcfp: Yo, insert hook through the front of hole of same pop tab back around to front of next pop tab, yo, pull back through 1^st pop tab, yo and pull through all 3 sts on hook to complete hdc st.).

Sc in next 2 sts, *repeat around to last pop tab. Join with a sl st to 1^st sc. Fasten off, weave in ends.

Repeat Round 1 and 2 for opposite side of pop tab.

Last Stretch - With hands on opposite side of bracelet band, gently pull in opposite direction. Repeat this around. This will align the pop tabs more uniformly giving the bracelet a tailored-neat appearance.

Free Plarn Pattern - Pop Tab Ring of Elegance

Personally, deciding on what piece(s) of jewelry to wear is just as important as deciding on what outfit to wear. And, big jewelry pieces are definitely the fad right now. We see it all the time on tv, in the magazines as well as our own day to day social settings.

That's exactly the concept behind my newest pop/pull tab design - Pop Tab Ring of Elegance. This ring proves that recycling can be upcycled to something beautiful.

This ring can easily be crocheted in less than 30 minutes. This is pattern is perfect for all skill levels. All you need to know is how to make a chain, the single crochet and reverse single crochet.

Materials needed:

8 pop/pull tabs
Size G crochet hook
1 plastic bag of choice
Button or Pin or whatever you want to use for complimenting the pop tabs. Let your creative juices flow. Here I've used a button that I removed from an old suit jacket that was tossed in the trash. But, really anything can be used.
Craft needle

Pattern:

Ring Base - Make 2:
Round 1: Using the magic circle, make 8 single crochet stitches in the ring (close the ring not tightly, leave a big enough hole for the button hole to go through), slip stitch in first single crochet stitch to complete round.

Round 2: Chain 1 and make a single crochet in same stitch, make 2 single crochet stitches in each stitch around, slip stitch in first single crochet stitch to complete round.

Round 3: (reverse single crochet) Chain 1, now working in the opposite direction make a single crochet stitch in each stitch around and join with a slip stitch in first single crochet stitch to complete round. Fasten off and weave in both ends.

Now for the finger piece:

Row 1: Chain 3, single crochet in second chain from hook and in last chain, turn.

Row 2: Chain 1, single crochet in first stitch and in next stitch.

Repeat row 2 until desired fit.

Determine fit by placing an end on one side of finger then wrap it around ending on other side of finger. Don't put the ends together because you want a tight fit as there is some stretch with plastic yarn.

Whip stitch the ends to the right side of a ring base. Noticed I said 'right side' because the wrong side will be sewn to the back of the pop/pull tabs.

On the other ring base we'll be attaching the pop/pull tabs. Do this by stitching the right side of 4 pop/pull tabs to the wrong side like clock hands at 12, 3, 6 and 9.

Then sew the remaining 4 pop/pull tabs in the empty spaces between the existing pop/pull tabs.

Don't worry about how it looks because your stitching will be hidden with the other ring base.

Now place your button on top of the same ring base poking the stitch hole through the middle circle and stitch it to the ring base. Remember, it doesn't matter how it looks because your stitching will be hidden.

You now have 2 separate finished pieces.

To finish the ring, stitch the 2 ring bases together. The easiest stitching method I have found is first insert your needle from behind one of the pop/pull tabs of your choice through a stitch in round 2 to the front. Then insert the needle in the next stitch over through the middle and out the back of the bottom ring base. Now working on the bottom, insert the needle in next stitch over, through the middle and to the top of ring. Repeat this completely around the ring base until both ring bases are stitched together. You may need to repeat the stitching for a second round just for added security.

Viola - your ring is ready to wear!!!!

Non Pop/Pull Tab Idea:

This pattern works great for those that are not into pop/pull tabs yet. Just crochet one ring base and finish it by sewing either an oversized button or smaller button to the top. It still looks great and gives you another fun flirty upcycled jewelry piece.

Free Pop Tab Bracelet Crochet Pattern - Lazy 'P' Pop Tab Plarn Bracelet

Pop Tab Bracelets are one of my favorite fashion accessories so I am always thinking of new designs and techniques to create with them.

I recently completed a new plarn handbag using the traditional Puff Stitch as part of the design. Impressed by the character the stitch offered to my handbag, it has been added to my list of favorite stitches.

As I was thinking of my next pop tab bracelet design, I decided to see what a pop tab bracelet would look like using the traditional Puff Stitch. At first, it lacked the finesse I was expecting. Then I decided to make the chain 1 through the next pop tab giving the appearance the Puff Stitch was 'laying down on the job' so to speak. That was it.

That's how I came up with the name of Lazy 'P'.

Recycling Zip Lock Sliders

I'm not afraid to admit that I am zipper challenged. It has actually become a phobia. After several attempts even while watching YouTube videos, it was time to face reality. It was time to throw in the perverbial zipper towel but only after I determed what could be used as a replacement. I prefer zippers over snaps and buttons.

Then the idea came to me that an alternative to sewing a zipper is attaching a ziplock slider from a Hefty or Ziplock Bag. I use ziplock bags for everything in my house but the bag because unusable way before the ziplock slider does.

Here is my creative way to recycle those ziplock sliders and below are a few of my original plarn (plastic yarn) pouch designs with zipslider closure as part of my newest RecycleZip© product line:

Pat's Powerful Pink Plarn Tote

There is nothing more flattering and rewarding to a designer than when a special customer makes a request for you to create something customized to their specifications. Well, my special customer is Pat from Gainesville, FL who recently asked me to design a 12 x 12 round pink tote using a tight stitch and drawstring handle.

Of course, it would have been so easy to make this bag using only the single crochet stitch. I just couldn't do that. A special customer deserves a special stitch which is why I chose to make this bag using the extended single crochet stitch. The extended single crochet offers a unique texture while maintaining an attractive appearance. And of course, durability and strength is a definite must.

The base and bag is made with over 130 pink plastic bags. The top and bottom was edged with white plastic yarn using the reverse single crochet stitch.

And the best part about this customized order - the customer is quote
"I am 150% happy!"

Pantyhose & Plarn Multi-Purpose Scrubby Crochet Pattern

Dollar General plastic bag & black pantyhose

My scrubbies are crocheted with plastic yarn and pantyhose held together. Don't be fooled by the plastic. When you combine both material together, you get one thick and durable scrubby.

These are machine washable and dishwasher safe. I've been making these scrubbies for years to accomplish so many different cleaning tasks. Mostly I use them for scrubbing pots and pans. However, I have found they are also good for ...

- cleaning the bugs off car windows
- cleaning my glass stove top and microwave messes because my son forgets to cover his dish
- they work awesome on cleaning bathtub rings and shower walls

Before we start - the following tutorial links show you how to prepare the pantyhose and plastic bags into yarn:
Pantyhose: (1/2 to 3/4" width suggested)

If you haven't crafted with pantyhose before, it is very different than plarn or regular yarn. Due to the very nature of it being nylon, you don't get a 'tightning' feel with it. My suggestion is don't pull it, use the same tension as the plarn.

Plastic Bags: (1 to 1 1/4" width suggested)

You will need:

Crochet Hook Size J (or K depending on thickness of pantyhose/plarn)

Important Note: Not all plastic is made the same. When using plarn, achieving the desired size or gauge is dependent on the texture, thickness and strip width of the plastic yarn.

1 pair of adult size pantyhose (2 adult legs will net 3 scrubbies)
Approx 1 1/2 standard size plastic bags (will net 1 scrubbie or 5 standard size plastic bags for 3 scrubbies)
(optional) Craft needle or F Hook for weaving in ends

Gauge: There really isn't any but typically 3 rounds measure approx 3" to 3 1/4" wide.

Pattern is worked with holding 2 strands of plastic yarn and 1 strand of panthose held together.

Round 1: Beg with a slip knot, ch 3 and join with sl st in 1^st ch to form ring or use adjustable ring method (click on the link for a tutorial) make 6 sc in ring. Join with sl st to 1^st sc, tighten and close the starting hole.

Round 2: Ch 1 (counts as 1st sc) make another sc in same st, make 2 sc into each st around, join with a sl st to beginning ch 1.

Round 3: Ch 1 (counts as 1st sc) make another sc in same st, *1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st. *Repeat around.

(add more rounds if you want a bigger scrubby)

It seems as though the holidays take so long to get here and then before you know it, we're left with pleasant memories of smiles, thank you's and full bellies.

But what isn't pleasant are the visible remains of empty boxes, bags, cards and wrapping paper left to throw away. And yes, throwing all of these things and more away is the easy thing to do. Especially, when we're so anxious to get back to normalcy once again.

Posted below are the final set of pattern instructions for the Pop Tab Front Post Plarn Bracelet Crochet-Plarn Along.

In Part 2, you will be using a unique stitch - it's what I call the Pop Tab HdcFP st (Half Double Crochet Front Post Stitch):

· Pop Tab hdcfp: Yo, insert hook through the front of the pop tab back around and through the back of the next pop tab, yo, pull back through front of 1^st pop tab, yo and pull through all 3 sts on hook to complete hdc st.

Pattern Instructions

*Sc in last 2 sts of next pop tab, pop tab hdcfp. *Repeat around to last pop tab. Join with a sl st to 1^st sc. Fasten off, weave in ends.

This Crochet-Plarn Along is for anyone seeking a 'last minute gift idea' or have a 'hard to buy for person' on their gift list.

Pattern Details:

Wrap&Go Checkbook/Wallet Organizer Crochet-Plarn Along / Part 3: The Finale

Part 3/The Finale:

The Wraparound Band and Flower

Wraparound Band:

Row 1: Working on top of flap in the middle, with F hook attach contrasting color with a sl st in on top of a st, sc in same st and in next st, ch 1, turn. (Note: the flower will be placed over this spot hiding the area.)

Row 2 – 16 (or desired length of band): Hdc in each st across, ch 1, turn. Before fastening off, test the length making sure it is long enough by wrapping band around pouch and position end at beginning of band. Even though plarn does stretch, you want the band a little loose so it isn’t so tight when you fill the pouch. Fasten off leaving long enough tail to st end of band to top of flap. Stitch end of band to front of flap.

Flower:

Round 1: With Contrasting color and H hook, using the adjustable ring method, make 7 sc in ring, join with a sl st in 1st sc.

Adjustable Ring method: Make a loop as if to form a knot giving yourself about 4” to 6” of tail. Insert hook through middle of loop (front to back), plarn over, and pull hook back through (back to front). You now should have 1 loop on your hook. Ch 1 as this will count as your first sc. (The standard is ch 1=sc; ch 2=hdc; ch 3=dc). Make the # of sts in the loop making sure to crochet around both the plastic yarn and tail. I suggest making the stitches a little loose so it will be easier to pull the plarn tail. If you start running out of tail, pull the tail to give you more slack, however, you will notice that the loop will get smaller. Now for the fun part – grab the tail and gently pull the stitches together. As you do this, the inner circle gets smaller.

Round 2: 2 sc in each st around. Fasten off.

Round 3: With Main Color, 2 sc in same st, 1 sc in next 2 sts.Repeat around. Do not fasten off but pull out a big enough loop so the stitch doesn’t come out as you will be coming back to it.

Round 4a: With F hook and contrasting color, join with sl st in front loop of a st from Round 3 and following petal pattern: in same st-sc, hdc, sc, sl st in next petal.Repeat around. After completion of last petal, sl st behind a st of 1st petal made. Fasten off, weave in ends.

Round 4b: Insert hook back into loop of round 3, follow petal pattern around: in same st - hdc, dc, 2tr, dc, hdc, sl st in next petal. Repeat around. After completion of last petal, sl st behind a st of 1st petal made. Fasten off, weave in ends.

- OR -

Pop Tab Flower:

Round 1: With contrasting color and F hook, join with sl st in pop tab and make 18 sc around pop tab. Fasten off, weave in ends.

Round 2: With main color and H hook, join with a sl st and sc in same st, *ch 4, sk 2 sts, sc in next st. *Repeat around.

Round 3: In each ch 4 sp, follow petal pattern: sc, hdc, dc, 2tr, dc, hdc, sc. After completion of last petal, sl st behind a st of 1st petal made.

Round 4: Still working behind petal, sl st to 1st tr, *ch 4, sl st in tr of next petal. *Repeat around. Fasten off, weave in ends.

Round 5: With contrasting color, follow petal pattern in each ch 4 sp: *sc, hdc, dc, 3tr, dc, hdc, sc, sl st in sl st of Round 4. *Repeat around. Sl st in 1st sl made of Round 4. Fasten off, weave in ends.

Join main color in front loop of a st in Round 5, sl st in each st around. Fasten off, weave in ends.

Assembly:
Position middle of flower over band ends on top of flap, sew flower to flap.
Final touch, with matching plarn and craft needle, sew remainder of I.D. pocket to flap.

Pop Tab Bracelet Crochet-Plarn Along

Pop Tab Bracelets have become today's newest fashion jewelry accessory -

But this isn't just any ordinary pop tab bracelet, this is an eco friendly pop tab bracelet because it is made with plarn.

'Plarn' .. it is a commonly used word heard quite a bit in the crafting community. You can find write-ups and tutorials about it on various blogs and websites as well as in YouTube.

What exactly is Plarn? It is a very creative way to recycle plastic bags you bring home from the grocery store, retail stores, and even fast food restaurants.

The word 'Plarn' is derived from 2 words combined: [Pl (plastic) + Arn (yarn) = Plarn] .

I recently hosted my first Crochet-Plarn Along and had so much fun with it I decided - Hey!! let's squeeze one more in before saying good-bye to 2010 ....

This Crochet-Plarn Along will be in honor of those that are seeking a 'last minute gift idea' or have a 'hard to buy for person' on their gift list.

The skill level: Easy

This pattern is so super simple that even the newest of new crocheter can do - all you need is:

Materials Needed:

Crochet hook - size F
Approximately 14 pop tabs consistent in size
2 standard size plastic grocery bags or 1 of each color

and in less than 30 minutes you’ll have an adorable bracelet just like this.

(except if you're laughing too hard from watching something funny on TV or chatting away with friends ...all of which are completely acceptable and encouraged)

Part 2:

Making the fold over flap with inside I.D. Pocket and Pen Holder

We will be using the rev sc (aka Crab St) in Part 2. If you are familiar with how to make the rev sc, feel free to jump down to 'Pattern Instructions'.

Here's how to make a rev sc stitch (aka crab st): It may feel a little odd because you’re make a sc just going in the opposite direction (i.e. left to right). Insert hook, plarn over and pull through (2 loops on hook), plarn over and draw through both loops. Continue in each st.

Pattern Instructions

Fold over Flap -

Decide which side of pouch will be the back, with back side facing you still using the H hook, attach contrasting color with a sl st in corner st.

Row 1 & 2: Sc in same st and in each st across. (Fast Forward moment: the 2nd row will be placement of the pen holder.)

Row 3: In blo, hdc in each st across. Turn.

Row 4 -7: Hdc in each st across.

Row 8: (This row will be the width of your I.D. or other card that will be used.) Hdc in each st across only for the desired width of the card. Turn.

Row 9 – 15: Hdc in each st across. Fasten off, weave in ends.

ID Pocket:

(Note: The Pocket is made separately then attached to the inside flap by making a rev sc through both layers when edging around the flap.)

Row 1: Ch the same # of sts to match Row 8 plus 2. Hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn.

Row 2: Hdc in each st across. Turn.

Row 3: Hdc in next 2 sts. Turn.

Row 4: Repeat row 3. Turn. Remove st off hook (DO NOT FASTEN OFF, you'll be coming back to it.

With wrong side of pocket facing you, join sl st in 1st st on opposite side of Row 3, hdc in same st and in next st. Turn, Repeat row 3 &4. Fasten off, weave in ends.

Row 5: Place hook back on st, hdc in next 2 sts, ch 9 or the the # of skipped stitches on Row 3, hdc in the last 2 sts. Turn.

Row 6 – 8 (or desired height of I.D. card): Hdc in each st across. Fasten off, weave in ends.

Lay pocket on inside flap to determine what row to rev sc through both layers of the pocket and flap. (Tip: I found it works best to have the ID opening lined up with the 2nd row from the top of the flap, see photo 16. This avoids any hang-over)

With contrasting color and back of pouch facing you, join with a sl st in lower left corner. Rev sc up the side attaching I.D. pocket along the way,

2 rev sc in corner, rev sc across top (in flap only), 2 rev sc in corner, back down opposite side (including I.D. pocket) of flap and around pocket opening to 1st rev sc made. Fasten off, weave in ends. The remainder of I.D. pocket will be attached with craft needle.

FYI - RecycleCindy raised a valid concern so I wanted to share this with you. She didn't like the way her rev sc was turning out so she chose to do a regular sc st around. If this is your choice, then here are the directions for doing a sc st edging: assuming your right handed, (referring to photo 10) join with a sl st at the bottom right corner of the flap, up the side to the corner, now going left across the edge of skipped sts, to the corner that would start the first joining of the I.D. pocket to the flap, up the side to the top right corner, the sc’s from the corner to the corner is a single layer in just the flap. You’re now at the opposite corner, sc thru both layers now attaching the other side of I.D. pocket, going back down the left side then arriving at the bottom corner parallel from where you started. Fasten off

Pen Holder:

Determine how wide of a holder you desire for the pen and placement of the holder. (Tip: I prefer 8 sts evenly centered on the flap. There is no right or wrong, it's a personal preference.) With inside flap facing you, join with a sl st in the 1st st of the pen holder, sc in same st and in each desire # across. Turn,

Sc in each st across for 4 total rows or # of rows needed for pen. (Tip: Plarn has some stretch to it. You want it to fit snug.)

Attaching - sl st in each st across to attach holder to flap. Finish off, weave in ends.

We've been spreading the word ... the time has finally arrived for us to get crazy.

The pattern instructions for the Wrap & Go Checkbook/Wallet Organizer will be offered in the following 3 increments:

Part 1 Instructions: Pouch
Part 2 Instructions: Flap
Part 3/Finale Instructions: Wraparoundband & Flower

Here are hints/tips I offer on all my patterns:

• Read through the pattern instructions before beginning.
• When using plarn, it’s a good idea to stretch your work after every couple of rows. This will give you a more realistic view of what you have completed up to that point.
• Ch 1 at beginning of each row is not counted as the 1st stitch.
• Plastic in general is susceptible to ripping/tearing due to its very nature.
   o Weaving in ends - it is best to maneuver your craft needle in between the stitch or stitches to avoid splitting the plastic yarn.

Practice Swatch:
I typically don’t suggest making a practice swatch because achieving a certain height/width is an individual preference. However, it is suggested to ensure the Organizer is the wide enough for what you propose to put in it.

Ch 22, hdc in 2nd ch from hook and each st across. Row 2-4: Hdc in each st across. Lay piece on flat surface and place the widest item that you will put in the Organizer once it is completed on top. The piece should be slightly (not much) wider than the item. If more width is needed, try again with additional # of ch sts until desired width is achieved.

• Crochet Hook – Size F & H
• Plastic Yarn (NOTE: 12 – 1” strips per standard size plastic bag = 6 yards):
   o Main Color – Approximately 20 plastic bags
   o Contrasting Color – Approximately 10 plastic bags
• Craft needle

ABBREVIATIONS Pattern Instructions:

blo = back loop only
ch(s) = chain(s)
dc = double crochet
flo – front loop only
hdc = half double crochet
rev sc = reverse single crochet
sc = single crochet
sl = slip
sp = space
st(s) = stitch(es)
tog = together
tr (treble or triple)

With H hook and main color, ch 22 or # determined with practice swatch.
Row 1: Hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch1, turn.
Row 2 – 22 (or desired height): Hdc in each st across. Finish with right side.

(Tip: Depth determines Height. To ensure an accurate height is achieved, fold the piece in half and place whatever you will be using the Organizer (e.g. checkbook, calculator, cell phone, etc.) for inside. This gives a more accurate way of determining if additional rows will need to be added for height.

Ch 1, sc in end st (1^st corner) and in end st of each row to corner, 3 sc in corner, across edge to corner, 3 sc in corner, sc in end st of each row matching up with opposite side (Important: evenly match up sts on both sides or the rows will not have a straight line appearance when stitching up the sides, refer to photo 6), 3 sc in corner, across edge back to corner, 2 sc in corner (back at 1^st corner), join with a sl st in beginning sc. Fasten off, weave in ends.

Sides (repeat on both sides):

With contrasting color and wrong side facing you, join with a sl st at the corner and sc in each st across, ch 1 turn. Sc in each st across. Fasten off leaving about 6” tail for sewing sides together.

Fold piece in half lengthwise with right sides together (wrong side out), st sides together with tail. (Stitch Suggestion – whip st the blo of one side and flo of other side [the 2 sts back to back]). Fasten off; weave in all loose plarn ends.

Turn pouch inside out and push out bottom corners. Just give the pouch a good stretch, tug and pull on both the front and sides. a sl st in 1^st sc st.

11/28- Sharing the excellent feedback received from a few plarn crocheters - RecycleCindy and KristyRecycles ....

1) Both used a ch base of 28 w/hdc in 2nd chain from hook instead of the ch 22 I used. RecycleCindy is using newspaper sleeve plastic yarn which would have a completely different texture/thickness than the Dollar General or Lowe's plastic yarn I have used.

This confirms my previous comments of what to consider when using plarn for any project -
a) the type of plastic bag - textures/thickness differs
b) tension - loose or tight crochet stitch
c) width of plastic strip - determines gauge

2) Ch 2 at row end was used as an alternative for a more taylored edge.

Move Over Yarn and Make Room For Plarn!!!

'Plarn' .. it is a commonly used word heard quite a bit in the crafting community. You can find write-ups and tutorials about it on various blogs and websites as well as in YouTube.

What exactly is Plarn? It is a very creative way to recycle plastic bags you bring home from the grocery store, retail stores, and even fast food restaurants.

The word 'Plarn' is derived from 2 words combined:

Let's go one step further - Now that you know what 'Plarn' is, how do you turn the plastic bag into plastic yarn?

The 2 commonly used methods are:

1) Double-Strand Cutting and Looping Method

2) Single (Continuous) Strand Cutting Method

The Looping Method is a fun activity to do as a family or the next time you hear 'Mom, I'm bored, there's nothing to do...'). You can have lots of fun looping plastic in a group setting such as church, at school or at work on lunch. Heck, this is a great way to make the time go faster while waiting at the dentist or dr's office instead of reading 2 year old magazines.

Plarn is very easy to use in both knitting and crocheting and is also visually appealing.

Here are just a few of the different types of plarn you will find available in the Plastique Plarn Shop:

Plastic Yarn Preparation

I can't believe the overwhelming number of responses received and still receiving for the C-PAL. It really is exciting to hear from both crocheters and non-crocheters...

Let me take this opportunity to address a few questions from the individuals not quite ready to take the plunge.

Most are concerned with .... where to begin / what to do first?

For those that have never tried using plastic bag yarn (aka plarn), I have outlined below some helpful hints and tips:

1) Where to find plastic bags:   Majority of the grocery stores (e.g. WalMart, Kroger, Winn Dixie, Publix, etc.) typically have a recycle container located at the front entrance.  You should have no problem finding an ample supply of plastic bags in the container.  The recycle containers are either a cardboard boxes (with or without a lid) or something fancier as a hard plastic green colored container with a slot on the front for depositing.

For this type of container, there should be a key turn on the side. Just turn the key, open it in front and choose from what's in there. The recycle container could also be located in the checkout area. If that's the case, I suggest going to the Customer Service counter and letting the manager know what you're doing and make sure they have no objections. I have yet to be told no (but, I always have an example of a plarn item on me so I show them what I make with the plastic bags and the fascination puts them into a trance). Also, be prepared for the stares and questions.

2) RECOMMENDATION: Whether you choose to pick through the recycle container at the store or wait until you get home - I strongly urge, recommend, suggest you wear some form of hand protection - (e.g. playtex gloves, etc.). Over the years, I have discovered that people also use plastic bags for various other things (to be specific, dog poop) and they'll put those nasty plastic bags in with the other plastic bags. And believe me I have come across much worst than dog poop ..

3) Finding what you want: There are many various types of plastic bags but amongst the popular are the t-shirt style most grocery stores use

and shiny merchandise/retain store bags .

If you're new to crafting with plastic yarn, I strongly recommend choosing the t-shirt bag as these are easier to work with. The retail bag has a tendency to resist the crochet hook.

4) Once you've picked the plastic bags you will be using for this project it's time to make plastic yarn. You can access the tutorials on how to make plastic yarn on my blog. The 2 creative ways are: 1) double-strand method (cutting the plastic bag into loops and looping the strips together) or 2) continuous strand method (making 1 long strand). There are also other sites on the internet that also offers tutorials including YouTube.

As I indicated in my previous post, I recommend that a practice swatch be made prior to beginning the project because:
Not all plastic is made the same. When using plarn, achieving a desired size or gauge is dependent on texture, thickness and strip width of the plastic yarn.

Crochet-Plarn Along (C-PAL for short)

Before going any further I don't want to presume that everyone knows what a 'crochet-along' is let alone what 'plarn' is.

What is a Crochet-Along?

An online virtual event where crocheters get together and work on a particular pattern together. It is also an opportunity to share experiences, offer suggestions, and give helpful tips/hints to each other.

What is plarn? It is a creative way to reuse plastic bags by turning it into yarn. [Plastic (pla) + Yarn (arn) = Plarn]

This C-PAL is being offered to give any yarncrafter who has always wanted to crochet with plastic yarn, but didn't know where to start, the opportunity.

About Me - My name is Teresa and I have been crocheting for 41 years. I celebrated my 30th wedding anniversary in August of this year and have 3 fantastic kids. My first experience with crocheting with plastic bags was merely by accident about 15 years ago. I was contracted to make an item and had just enough yarn for the project but not enough to make a practice swatch. I remembered looking around and found plastic bags tucked away in a drawer. I figured out how to cut the strips into something that would resemble yarn. I was so intrigued on the texture and appearance of the swatch I ended up making the entire item with the plastic yarn. Needless to say, so did my client and that's what she ended up paying me for. I have perfected my cutting technique over the years and have preferred plastic yarn ever since.

Who is invited to participate in the C-PAL? Anyone and Everyone. Don't keep this a secret. Help me spread the word. Tell everyone you know that crochets -blog about it... twitter about it... facebook about it ...myspace about it... and any other media venue you can think of.

The skill level for this C-PAL is 'Easy' so everyone from novice to seasoned can join in the fun!

Why is this starting on 11/28?Firstly) from now until the 28th, most of us will be pre-occupied with Thanksgiving activities.
Secondly) 11/28 is my birthday and I will be turning 50 this year. The gift of giving is the best gift of all to receive.

Why is the C-PAL only lasting one week because normally they last much longer? Christmas is just around the corner and after you make one for yourself, you'll be addicted and realize this will make the perfect gift. Thus, giving you plenty of time to make up as many as you can in time for Christmas.

When does the C-PAL come to an end and how long will the pattern be available? There is no 'official' end date. Pattern instructions will be accessible on my blog and I will continue to make myself available to answer any questions via the blog or facebook for past, present and future C-PALs that I am planning. Continue to crochet at your own pace and at your leisure.

Not all plastic is made the same. When using plarn, achieving the desired size or gauge is dependent on the texture, thickness and strip width of the plastic yarn.

Plastic Yarn - 20 standard size plastic bags for each color. This really is more than enough. Everyone crochets differently (i.e. tight, loose) so this is to ensure you don't run short.
Crochet Hook: size H
Craft Needle

Other Details:
FINISHED SIZE: Width-7 1/2"; Height-5" Gauge Info: Typically, I don't worry much about the gauge. However, I do recommend it for this project if you want to ensure the Organizer is a specific width/height that you want it to be.

GAUGE: 5 hdc = 1”; 3 rows = 1 ¼”

I never would have imagined when my online shop opened in April of 2009, that less than 2 years later Plastique Recreations would be available in a retail store.

I'm proud to announce that Plastique Recreation's complete line of purses, bags, accessories, plastic cup spiral notebooks, pop tab plarn bracelets and so much more is now available at 'Your Hearts Desire' in Lake City, Florida. What an unbelievable opportunity this is for me to expand my retail footprint.

Pop Tab Flower Keychain Pattern

I would have never thought in a million years that I would enjoy crocheting different things with pop tabs.

As a recycle artisian, not much gets thrown away. It is just routine that before something is thrown away, anything that can be salvaged is removed from the item (e.g. pop tabs from soda cans, etc.) then placed in individual containers. From that point the stash continues to grow until I'm struck with a creative thought. Until then, I just keep removing and stashing.

One day I noticed my stash of pop tabs was increasingly growing. So I got out the plastic yarn and decided to make a flower. I like flowers. I've seen in Etsy and on other sites where various crafters used the pop tab for the petals. I wanted to be different so instead I used the pop tab as the center instead of the typical adjustable ring method to crochet in the round.

Below is my Pop Tab Flower Keychain pattern:

SKILL LEVEL: Easy
MATERIALS:
· Crochet Hook – Size F and G
· Pop Tab (any size)
· Craft needle for attaching handles and for weaving in ends
· Key Ring
· Plastic Yarn - Main Color (MC): 1 plastic bag / Contrasting Color (CC): 1 plastic bag

Round 1: With F hook and CC, join with sl st in pop tab and sc completely around pop tab (14 sts needed for 7 petals on 1st layer. Note: Make sure you end up with an even number of sts. This determines the # of petals.) Join with a sl st to 1st sc.

Round 2: With MC in flo - for each petal around – *in same st make a sc, hdc, sc, sl st in next st. *Repeat around. Join with a sl st to 1st sc.

Round 3: With G hook and CC in blo of Round 1 sts, for each petal around - *in same st make a hdc, dc, tr,dc, hdc, sl st in next st. *Repeat around. Join with a sl st in a st behind the 1st hdc made. Still working behind the petals, sl st over to tr st, *ch 3, sl st in next tr st. *Repeat around. Join with a sl st to 1st sl st made.

Round 4: With MC and in each ch sp, make an hdc, 2 dc, 2 tr, 3 dc, hdc. (Note: Add more tr sts for height. Add more dc sts for fullness). Join with a sl st to 1st hdc. Fasten off, weave in all ends.

With G hook and both MC and CC, sl st in any st in between round 3 and 4, ch 10 or desired length of key chain. Working behind the ch place the key ring in front of plarn then sl st in the last ch made. (The key ring is now part of the ch) Sl st around the key ring to reinforce strength then sl st behind each ch of the keychain across to 1st sl st made. Join with a sl st to 1st sl st. Here is a crochet pattern to a plarn wristlet that I designed to help me keep stuff inside of my purse better organized - making my comb, cell phone and checkbook more accessible. I also wanted something that I use as a wallet for quick trips into the store. Believe it or not, this did the trick!!

Skill Level: Easy

Measurements: Width: 6.75"; Height: 4.25"
Materials Needed:

Plastic Bags: Main Color: approx 15 and Contrasing Color: approx 3 (Picture - Double-Strand Cutting and Looping method used with Kroger & WalMart plastic bags).
Crochet Hook: Size I
Craft Needle

Please read through the following information before beginning:

To make a color change - pull the new color through instead of the old color when completing the st. Place the tail of the old color behind your work to crochet over it when making the next couple of stitches with the new color. This will save you time later when weaving in your ends.
The ‘ch’ at the beginning of the round is not the first st.
When using plarn, it’s a good idea to stretch your work after every couple of rows. This will give you a more realistic view of what you have completed up to that point.
Plastic in general is susceptible to ripping/tearing due to its very nature. So when weaving in ends or sewing stitches together, it is a good idea to maneuver your craft needle in between stitches or use the open spaces in between stitches to avoid splitting the plastic yarn.

Row 1: With main color, ch 22, hdc in 2nd ch from hook and across.

Row 2-14 (or desired height): In blo, hdc in each st across. Fasten off, weave in ends.

Working along the sides with contrasting color, *join with sl st at corner of end row, sc across. Fasten off, leaving long enough tail for stitching. *Repeat for other side.

Fold in half lengthwise with wrong side out, sew sides together with tail. Weave in all ends. Pull pouch inside out, being sure to poke out corners.

Round 1: Attach contrasting color in a corner stitch of opening, in blo hdc around.

Round 2: In blo, hdc in each st up to the 1 st from the middle, ch 3, skip the 2 middle sts (wristlet hole), hdc in next st and around to same spot on other side, ch 30 (less if you don't want a handle or more if you want a bigger handle), skip the 2 middle sts, hdc around. Join with sl st in 1st hdc. Fasten off, weave in ends.

Round 3: With main color, in blo sc in each st around except sl st in each ch of wristlet hole and handle. Fasten off, weave in ends.

It's All In My Head - or rather - on My Head

Plastique Recreations launched it's newest product line - Hats

And, of course, these were made from plastic yarn which is also known as plarn [plastic + yarn = plarn].

The ironic part of it all, I don't wear hats - never did. I don't even try because I just don't look good in them. I created these not only for the challenge but even more importantly, to have something new and different to offer my fashionista and/or fashion-gent customers.

I have always admired ladies that wore wide-brim sun hats. These are the cutest things ever!!! So, of course, what was the first hat I designed - a Sun Hat with a wide brim.

But it's not any ordinary sun hat - I designed this so the fasionista would have options. This awesome hat was made from WalMart produce bags. And, you know how soft they are.

Here are just a few of the different ways it can be worn:

And, like all my plarn creations, these are completely washable and stretchable.

So while you're protecting your head from the harsh sun rays, you're even looooooooooooooooking good while doing it. You have to admit, these are a definite eye catcher.

If you like these hats, wait until you see what kind of hat I'm designing next. Hint - fabulous sun visors but not just any ordinary sun visor.

Lid Bottom Bags

Earlier this month I showed you how I recycle and reinvent plastic cups and plastic containers by turning them into awesome spiral notebooks. Since doing the blog post, I have received an overwhelming amount of emails. Thank you to everyone for the very nice comments and compliments.

Now the real question everyone wants to know - what did I do with the lids? Hmmmm, let's just say what was up is now down...... These lids are now the bottom to my newest Market Bag/Tote Line which I call 'Lid Bottom Totes'.

I came up with the idea to use the lids as the bottom while thinking of something very unique and different to create for a contest that Craftsters.org was hosting - 'Reusable Shopping Bag' Challenge . It had to be unlike something I've done in the past, something extraordinary.

So one day I just did a complete walk through of my house and garage and ended up in my kitchen with no ideas ... not even a thought. Then it hit me, LITERALLY, when I opened a cabinet door and plastic lids flew out from having too many of them in there.

While creating this, it also made me think about those bags that have been discarded over the years or still sitting in the back of closets. The bottoms are unsightly from constantly putting it on the ground making it too embarassing to take out in public.

Even yet, how many times lipstick has melted or something else spilled out staining the inside bottom.

But I wasn't going to limit myself to just the round lids, I discovered that my same technique would work just as well on oval lids too.

Spiral Notebooks made from Fast Food Plastic Cups and Plastic Containers (e.g. CoolWhip, Parkay, etc.)

I have received several emails since introducing Plastique Recreations newest product line - plastic spiral notebooks - asking what made me think to create this.

We all know that there's a lot more to plastic than just plastic bags. Plastic comes in many shapes, sizes and textures. Everyone also knows that I am making it a personal challenge to do what I can to keep what I can out of the landfill.

I decided it was high time (again) to get creative beyond plastic bags and think outside the proverbial 'box' - and in my case, outside the 'cup' or 'container'.

Firstly, I had to decide what plastic item was I going to tackle... it just so happens I had just finished drinking a large diet coke from Burger King. I noticed a trend from some of our favorite fast food restaurants like Burger King, Taco Bell, McDonald's, etc. that large drinks are served in plastic cups. After I cut the bottom off the cup and layed it out flat, my first thought was to poke holes and crochet around it eventually turning it into a tote - very similar to what I did with the Coca Cola plastic cup

but then I thought, I do enough of those already. Then I looked around and knew an idea would hit me eventually and it did - a notebook.....

I love notebooks - I carry them in all my bags/totes and purses. They sit next to every telephone in my house and on every table sitting next to a chair in every room. I go through a lot of note paper because I'm always jotting down ideas; I typically have a running grocery list because I'm not going to remember on Friday what we needed or ran out of on Tuesday; my husband is always asking ME of all people to remind him that we have to do this or that later. You get the idea. And, I'm really rough on notebooks. The cardboard cover typically wears out, fades or just tears off before I even make it through half the notebook paper.

It was the perfect idea and more importantly, more conducive to my lifestyle!!! That's when I converted the plastic cup into a plastic cup spiral notebook ... it won't wear out, won't tear and what's even more awesome, you can bend it and curl it to fit in any pocket. When you unfold it, it goes back to it's original shape. I ask you, just how awesome is that???

But the creative juices were flowing even faster, I couldn't stop myself. I had to take it a step further - if I can do this with a plastic cup, I can do this with some of the plastic containers I wash out and reuse for left overs. Do you know how many margarine tubs and other plastic containers I have in my cabinets, my sewing room and my garage? I reuse them for everything. I turned this beautiful plastic tub into

And, that's my story of how the plastic cup and plastic container spiral notebooks were born!!!

Now I know what you're thinking - now that I've used the plastic container, what good is the lid. Ye of such little faith in me.... stay tuned because I will show you how I 'reused' the lid.

MOLLY J. WALTER ... Environment Hero

As most of you know, back in January I did a blog post 'Until Plastic Bags are Banned' which was to draw attention to the harm plastic bags are to the environment and even more so, what they do to our animal friends. Until a permanent fix is in place, we have a responsibility to do whatever we can to keep as many plastic bags out of the landfill.

There are multiple shops on Etsy that take this responsibility very seriously. I refer to them as 'Environment Heroes'.

Let me introduce to you .....Environment Hero -

Q: What is the creative process you use to decide what to create for your Etsy store?Functionality is always first! If I can make something out of plastic that is usable and beautiful, I will! I don't follow any patterns, but just go, and then I get to see what comes of it. No two items are the same, which I really appreciate as an artist.

Q: Are you selling your products in any other online venue other than Etsy? At this point, no. But I have plans to launch my own website in 2010!

Q: Do you have any interest in selling your product in an actual store/market place? Yes! I have discussed some consignment with a few different outlet, but nothing seriously yet. I'd like to get a few more art shows/events under my belt first and have a few already scheduled for 2010.

Q: What are your favorite things to make with plastic bags? Rugs. They are so functional, practical, and can be machine washed, if desired. Rugs are fun to make with all types of plastic, in all colors and kinds of crochet stitches (i have even knit a rug or two lately!) and the BEST part is that guests in my home are surprised to find they are standing on hundreds of plastic bags (ie: my entry room rug).

Q: Take a wild guess on how many plastic bags you have to-date been able to keep out of the landfill? 6 - 10 thousand so far. I hope to use twice that much in 2010.

Q: What will you do when plastic bags are officially banned in the U.S.? I would just find something else to crochet with! It is a challenge to upcycle, a challenge I really enjoy. If plastic bags are no longer availabe, which would be great for the Earth, I'm sure I will find something else to create with.

Q: For someone to get to know you, how would you describe yourself? Creative, passionate, and dedicated. I'm always striving to improve my craft and stretch my abilities, in all areas of my life.
