Foster McGinty is a featured musician on Plattsburgh Pipeline Radio who has been
playing music for years. His musical career really took off when he
moved to New York City in the fall of 2006. McGinty writes his own
lyrics and music, which are drawn from his everyday experiences. He
says, “Inspiration is everywhere you just have to be open and aware
of it. I don't leave my shoe box apartment without a pen, paper, and
my trusty hand held recorder. I always leave those three devices next
me when I sleep too. You never know when inspiration is going to
spark you. It comes unannounced and you have to be on your toes.”

Foster
McGinty's music cannot be classified into one specific genre; his
album Peach Red blends
together many, showcasing his diverse talents on the guitar as well
as in his vocal performance. McGinty says, “My brand of rock
n' roll draws from some of the more beautiful moments in rock history
giving it a retro feel, but it's certainly not limited to that. It's
got modern appeal for sure. I'll call it the ghost of the late
sixties draped in a modern day sheet.”

According
to Foster McGinty the main themes for the songs on his album
Peach Red “have a lot to do with common relationship
scenarios put to colorful words. Love lost love gained, cat and
mouse, etc. Songs like "Can't Help But Shine", "10
Moons", and "Hard Jelly" all had to do with some of my
personal experiences. I write a lot of stories as well. I like to
write about dreams, the old west, and whatever else I can imagine.”

When writing a song Foster says, “There
is no formula or recipe I stick to. When I find myself alone picking
out a song tapping my foot with my eyes closed I know I'm on to
something. You've got to be able to turn off the inner critic. Don't
worry about what other people are going to think, they always have a
totally different interpretation of the music anyway. Shaping the
song around a sparked feeling is key. I don't put the guitar or pen
down until I've milked the inspired moment dry. Then I revisit it
later.”

Foster feels that
the current themes of his songs will change. He says, “It's always
changing.” Foster is currently in the studio working on a new EP.
He adds, “The EP I'm working on has a few fictional escapades
involving me and legendary outlaws of the old west, it's like
something you would read in a dime novel in the late eighteen
hundreds. You'll hear songs about me leaving San Francisco with Butch
and The Sundance Kid, ditching a train for an Olds Mobile while
police are mistaking me for Jesse James, etc.”

I asked McGinty what he wants the
listener to experience when they hear his music. He replied, “I
want the listener to go on a colorful journey to some place other
than where the are at the time of their listening experience. I hope
they can step into the song and escape to the place I was when I
wrote.”

I asked, “What
type of feel will your Extended Play have for listeners? When do you
expect it to be released?” Foster says, “It's a five song EP I'm
recording titled Arteola. The title stems from a small town
(now pretty much a ghost town) back in Missouri where my great
grandfather had a farm and mercantile store. He was alive during the
civil war (75 when my grandmother was born) and all kinds of crazy
stories have been told about him and his days in Arteola. Gun
fights, wild card games, robberies, him losing a wife and a child in
a horse and carriage accident. My head runs wild when I think about
him and his life in Arteola--that played a major role on the
creative side for this record. I'm recording the Arteola Extended Play at Dubway Studios in NYC with the same people I
recorded Peach Red with. This EP is going to have a live feel,
we are cutting all the rhythm tracks live and even a few of my solos
as well. The five songs I've decided to record are some of the best
tunes I've ever written. That's my opinion anyway. The same retro
rock vibe you hear on Peach Red is there, but you will
definitely here more of a modern influence. Arteola is kin to
Peach Red, but totally different at the same time.” He adds,
“The official release date has not been determined, but I am
looking to release Arteola mid December.”

If you like rock, blues, and a twist of
funk be sure to check out Foster McGinty's album Peach Red streaming on Plattsburgh Pipeline Radio. Foster is currently putting
together a east coast tour and is hoping to add some upstate venues
and plans being in the area by the beginning of the new year. If you

FROM THE PIPELINE

by Scott Osika

“Lucid” is a
featured band on Plattsburgh Pipeline Radio whose music really
reaches the masses. Lucid has been together since 2004 and have
played many venues, from the City of Plattsburgh's Mayor's Cup to Higher Ground
in Burlington, Vermont and the Bitter End in NYC. Lucid also partakes
in Backwoods Pondfest ending both nights awesome musical lineup.

Lucid is
comprised of Kevin Sabourin on guitar, and lead vocals, Lowell
Wurster on harmonica, percussion and lead vocals, Ryan Trumbull on
Drums, Andy Deller on keyboards and vocals, Chris Shacklett on bass
and vocals, and Jamie Armstrong on the Saxophone and vocals.

“Lucid's”
music is rock and blues at the core, but they also bring in other
styles. All members have diverse influences, so their rock style
ranges from reggae to jazz to folk to punk The band members add, “It
would be a stretch to associate ourselves too strongly with other
genres. A new genre we've heard thrown around is “Jam Band,” and
we definitely fit that category as well. Though we do have some very
structured material, a few of our songs are never played the same way
twice, and we often enjoy simply making up songs on the spot.”

“Lucid”
formed from a group of High School buddies. Kevin, Jamie, and Nick
Suavie (the original bass player) started the band in Plattsburgh,
New York in 2004. Ryan who is from Jay, NY joined the band when Nick
saw what an amazing drummer he was.

Lucid says, “The
four of us built up a repertoire, and started gigging a little by
spring. While playing around Plattsburgh, we met up with, and
recruited Lowell, who was a childhood friend of Jamie’s. We then
met Andy while honing our skills at a local club’s open mic night,
and he stuck with us as we became that club’s house band. This line
up continued for four years.”

They continued,
“It was only a year ago that original founder Nick Sauvie left the
band for academic pursuits. By this time, we were well integrated
into the local music scene, and we knew immediately who we wanted to
replace Nick. Chris Shacklett kindly accepted our offer and joined
the band.”

I asked, “How
did the band come up with the name “Lucid”?

They said, “It
was a long road to the name for sure! Our original name was “Styles
of the Smooth” which you might recognize as the first track on our
first album. But as we used it on friends, we found it felt too long.
Kevin and Nick had been studying psychology at the time, and the
ideas of “lucid dreams” were permeating all our thoughts, so
those two came up with “Lucid Image” as a replacement. After a
short time we all agreed that sounded more like a portrait studio
than a band, so we finally shortened it to “Lucid.”

Lucid says that
the ingredients to a good song are “When the whole band can own the
song, effortlessly let the song happen. When the chemistry on stage
takes over and the people are apart of it. A good song means
something to us and the people who listen to it. The diversity of
sounds in the band contribute to why we think our songs are great
pieces of art as well.”

Lucid has been in
the studio recently recording “Dewdmanwah,” their second, long
awaited album which has been released. I asked the band what kind of
highs and lows were experienced throughout the process. The band
members said that the album took them a long time. A lot longer than
hoped for because of the many unexpected detours through the process.

Lucid added, “We
recorded “Dewdmanwah” on our own. With our own gear, at our own
pace at our friend Benn Erb's house. He was the producer and sound
engineer for the album, so the atmosphere was very relaxed as far as
it's production went. This was positive in that we had a lot of
control over how it sounded. But at the same time it meant that we
had no deadlines to meet with it... Overall the outcome and
experiences were amazing and we are considering working the same way
with our next album that we plan to start recording at the end of
September.”

I then asked how
fans have responded to their second album “Dewdmanwah.” They said
that fans who have provided feedback were all very positive about it.
Many fans have said that they love the song selection and also how
the recording sounds, which has more of a “live” feeling to it
compared to their first album, “Miles Deep.”

The band says
that their most memorable gig has been the annual Backwoods Ponfest
in Peru, New York. They add that there are aspects of every gig that
they cherish. September 11 & 12th, 2009, Backwoods Pondfest, a 2
day festival, will feature 15 bands and “Lucid” will be
performing both nights.

I asked, “With
Backwoods Pondfest is right around the corner, what can festival
goers expect this year? The band replied, “Great music, no hassles,
a comfortable atmosphere and some nice surprises from us!!!”

I asked “Lucid”
if they have any favorite local bands and/or artists. The band
members said that they really do love our local music scene. They
love all the great bands like the “Shameless Strangers,”
“Elephant Bear,” “Slow Natives/Eat Sleep Funk.” Lucid adds,
“They are all great friends and contribute to what we as a
community of musicians are trying to do for music in Plattsburgh.”

“Lucid” says,
“We are constantly adding new material, so if you haven’t seen us
in a while, and you think you know what we’re all about, think
again. Also, we like long walks on the beach, snuggling up under a
blanket with a warm bowl of popcorn, and mature men and women who
know what they want from life, and aren’t afraid to go for it.”

If you haven't
seen this band live I suggest that you do! They will have your feet

Phil Henry is a singer/songwriter whose
music is featured musician on Plattsburgh Pipeline Radio. Phil Henry
grew up in Saranac Lake, New York and now resides in Rutland Vermont.
When Phil is not playing alone, he is joined by Wayne Davison on sax,
Will Patton on Mandolin, and Sean Fitzpatrick on drums. I was able to
reach Phil for a few questions.

I asked Phil, “What genre of music do
you consider your work to be?” Phil replied, “ I've always
thought of myself as a folk musician. The sax player I work with a
lot, Wayne Davison, once was astounded to hear me say that. He always
thought of me as pop-rock. But, here I am- Acoustic guitar and voice,
most of the time, writing about a variety of topics (economic
hardship, escape artists, renewable energy, cowboys) instead of just
love/breakups. I usually will call it Contemporary Folk
Singer-Songwriter.”

I asked, “Who are your major
influences?” He said, “I listen to all kinds of music, but the
ones who influence what I do are: Paul Simon, Martin Sexton, Richard
Shindell, Richard Thompson, Peter
Mulvey...”

I asked, “What inspires you to
make music?” Phil said, “The very thought of someone listening to
what I do helps get me ready to play... Picturing the audience at a
particular show waiting for the the first note psychs me up for that
performance. Thinking of somebody with their Ipod listening to my
tunes helps me in the writing and recording process”

I asked Phil, “Who has supported
you the most throughout your musical career?” he said, My wife has
always been quite supportive, but I'd have to say the musicians I've
had the pleasure to play with over the years have been the most
uplifting. I have a variety of people I turn to, depending on
the gig-
percussionist, drummer, mandolin/accordion player,
vocalists, sax player, guitarist. Devoid of ego, these guys
have always been willing to come along, musically, in whatever
direction I've wanted. I can't thank them all enough. For
example, my buddy Gary Moon is a talented singer-songwriter from Lake
George. But over the past year, he's been playing djembe and
shakers and singing harmony at a bunch of gigs, including an unpaid
contest all the way down in MD this Spring. How great is that
to have someone so talented on your side?”

I asked, “What has been your
biggest challenge as a musician? Have you been able to overcome that
challenge? If so, how?” Phil replied, “My biggest challenge is
being my own booking agent. I find it really hard to pick up the
phone and say, "I'm really great, book me at your venue".
I keep pressing on, though. I'm not good at it, though.”

I asked, “Phil, What do you feel
are the ingredients of a good song?” He replied, “ First, Good
groove (I guess this is where I split from a lot of folk. Even
if it's an acoustic tune, you should be able to tap your foot along
with it). Second, Interesting melody/ chord progression. Third, An
emotional component to the lyrics. Fourth, Enough details to make the
story "real" for the listener!”

I asked Phil, “What are the main
topics for most of your songs and Do you think these topics will
change over time?” Phil said, “I've already watched it change
over the years, from your run-of-the-mill love songs/break-up songs
to a variety of topics, with subtext to something much more varied.
For example, for the new CD I'm working on, here are some
topics: A drive-in movie theater (progress vs. tradition), a radio
station during hurricane Katrina, the death of a cowboy (and cowboy
movies), a bank robbery, renewable energy as a metaphor for
songwriting, a thrift store.”

I added, “If you could change
anything in your past, musically, would you? And if so, what?”
Phil said, “Nothing, except that at times, I didn't have confidence
in my own, original songs. I would too often rely on covers to
get through a gig and connect with an audience. But then again,
maybe my originals sucked back then.:

I continued, “If you could
revisit a point in your musical career, what point in time would that
be, and why would you revisit that particular moment? Phil said, “I
love where I am right now, and where I'm going. There are
certainly some mileposts which I enjoyed very much. Showcasing
at a couple of big
festivals, like Kerrville in Texas, and the
Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, winning some songwriter contests. But
those things are all very momentary and fleeting. I'd rather
look ahead!”

I asked, “What do you want the
listener to get out of your music?” Phil said, “I want the
listener to enjoy it, on whatever level they'd like. That's one
reason I spend a lot of time on details in the studio... If you
enjoy the groove of a song I want it to be there for you. If
you like hearing well played instrumental solos, I want to provide
it. If you want a well-crafted song with an emotional
component, I want to give that... If you don't like all of
those things, and can take a little bit, that's great, too.”

I continued, “How have listeners
responded to your music on the road?” Phil said, “ Usually very
positively. I don't tour as much as I'd like, mostly because
I'm a lazy booking agent, but when I do, it's always a great
experience!

I asked, “What are your musical
goals for the remainder of 2009?” Phil said, “ This summer, I'll
be finishing my new CD! And then, I'll start a bunch of gigs to
promote it, and make sure as many people as possible will hear it!”

I asked Phil, “Do you have any
upcoming gigs in the area?” He said, “I need to get back to
Plattsburgh, that's for sure... When in my rock-ier days I used
to play the Monopole, and from time to time I've enjoyed an Ubu while
playing Irises, but it's been awhile... Perhaps I'll get back
to the Adirondack Soup Company! I love that place!”

	-->

Kylie Edmond is a singer/songwriter
featured on Plattsburgh Pipeline Radio whose music falls into the
Pop/Rock genres, Kylie likes to call it “sunshine smitten rock.”
Kylie Edmond grew up in Western Australia and took her musical career
to New York City, where she now resides. Kylie's 2008 EP, “Weak”
as well as her new 2009 single “Mine for the Day” have both
received great reviews.

Kylie says that her major influences
musically have been ABBA, Alanis Morissette, Kylie Minogue, Mark
Lizotte, Michelle Branch, Sheryl Crow, so many more. She adds, “In
my life, my inspirations are my family, friends and anyone who
astounds me, shocks me, makes me laugh or cry. Also dogs!”

I asked Kylie, “Who has supported you
the most throughout your career?” Kylie responded, “I've had so
much support so this is not an easy question to answer!! My family
are amazing. I left Australia to come to NYC for music. That's a huge
sacrifice on everyone's part. They had to "let me go" in
order to follow my dreams. So, I'd say considering they still talk to
me and send me B'day presents...they win that award.”

I asked Kylie, What inspired her to
make music?” She said, “I was always into performing, back in the
day, dance and acting. I was that kid who went into "show"
when the fridge was opened and the light went on. I wrote my first
song at 10. I can still remember most of it. Shockingly bad and
brilliant all at once. But I didn't REALLY get serious about
songwriting till about 2 or 3 years ago. I guess the inspiration
comes from a place where I can't NOT write. I love the process of
starting off with an idea and seeing it through to final production.
That amazes me.”

I then asked Kylie, “What are the
main themes for most of your songs?” She said, “Ha! My Mum says I
never write about love in a positive way...she's right. They are all
about one night stands, affairs, being a hooker, never getting the
one you want, and even if you get the one you want they don't turn
out to be what you wanted anyway. Since moving to NYC my songs have
definitely become more edgy in content. The songs I perform (&
can’t afford to record yet) are all pretty sassy, and it seems to
go over well since I'm seriously not that sassy in real life! I've
never been a hooker....let me stress that!”

I continued, “Do you think these
topics will change over time?” Kylie said, “I'm sure! Though I
haven't written that love song yet....it may be out there. My new
song "Mine For The Day" is about your partner having an
open affair, but you wait for that person all night and love them
when you can all day, till they leave again. So, for now there's no
normal love song.”

I asked, “What do you feel are the
ingredients of a good song?” Kylie said, “They say if a song can
be played raw, just guitar and vocals, and it still sounds great
without all the production, then you have a hot song. Think of John
Lennon "Imagine". It can be played in its simplest form and
it's still brilliant. I know some ingredients like a hot hook, great
lyrics and a vibe are important. But a brilliant song has some sort
of magic. I don't know what exactly that magic is....but I want it!!
I’m trying to crack the code!”

I asked, “What has been your biggest
challenge thus far as a musician? Have you been able to overcome that
challenge? If so, how?” Kylie replied, “Well, first up I don't
know if I can call myself a musician. I've been learning guitar for
only two and a half years and while I play out and play every
day.....until I know as many chords as Hendrix I don't think I can
truthfully call myself a muso. But in saying that I'd say the
challenge is an every day one. It's being all of the jobs at once.
Writer, manager, singer, stylist, promoter, assistant, booker and
more. You really have two things going at once, the business and the
creative. You have to be able to do both until you can afford to hire
someone else! So, it's like having two full time jobs on top of the
full time day job I already have! I just try to manage my time very
well by sticking to a project and setting priorities. Though it can
be very overwhelming at times. So...getting some sleep...that's the
major challenge.”

I asked, “If you could change
anything in your past, musically, would you? And if so, what?”
Kylie replied, “I'd have learned an instrument at a young age and
started writing seriously then too. With only a couple of years
behind me I'm trying to catch up!!

I asked, “How have listeners
responded to your music?” Kylie said, “I perform regularly in and
around NYC. Though NYC people are thought of as jaded since they have
so much at their fingertips, I've found the audiences to be very kind
and receptive. A really great listening crowd who want to hear what
your songs are about and they enjoy participating too. I get the
audience involved as much as I can with clapping or singing along, or
handing out percussion instruments for them to play while I sing. And
of course certain songs strike certain people. It's terrific to chat
with people after a show and hear that a song really affected them in
a funny or meaningful way.

I asked Kylie what she wants the
listener to get out of her music and she said, “A little sunshine
rock. Girls can be girlie and still rock. :-)”

Kylie's most memorable venue has
been as she says, “Believe it or not, the NYC subway. Why? I didn't
get mugged, a little girl danced to my song and I got “the eye"
from a cute little old man.”

Kylie Edmond's musical goals for the
remainder of 2009 are to play out as much as possible, write and
record new songs and hopefully to have one of her songs aired on a
television program or even in a movie. She adds, “That'll require
some bubbly!!”

I asked Kylie if she has any
upcoming upcoming gigs in the northeast and she said, “As far north
I'm going is Mahopac NY in the summer....BUT I'd LOVE to do a mini
tour. I produce a female singer/songwriter series called "Girls
Rock the Night" and we definitely do rock in the sassiest of
ways. We are packing out venues in NYC and I think it's time we went
on the road. Anyone want us to play at their venue?? ;-)”
