Today’s businesses face a myriad of
issues adjusting to a new set of energy demands. This workshop outlines the
opportunities presented for entrepreneurs in adopting renewable energy and
energy efficiency models.

BUSINESS OWNERS WILL learn to:

* Implement
energy efficiency projects

* Secure
financing to achieve energy efficiency or to build green buildings

* Evaluate
other renewable energy sources such as solar and wind

* Improve
environmental performance (being greener)

* Evaluate
energy efficiency opportunities in all areas

* Improve
your bottom line

Under the Energy Savings Program, an SBDC
advisor reviews the NYSERDA suggested efficiencies with the business owner to
analyze the potential savings. Eligibility is open to small and medium-sized businesses,
as well as industrial and commercial facilities. Participants must have less
than $75,000 in annual electric bills to be eligible.

The NYS SBDC will subsidize one-half of the
cost of the NYSERDA review for the first 100 statewide clients of the program.
The NYSERDA review fee will be refunded in full to the business if the owner
implements the recommended measures.

my life, my inspirations are my family, friends and anyone who
astounds me, shocks me, makes me laugh or cry. Also dogs!”

I asked Kylie, “Who has supported you
the most throughout your career?” Kylie responded, “I've had so
much support so this is not an easy question to answer!! My family
are amazing. I left Australia to come to NYC for music. That's a huge
sacrifice on everyone's part. They had to "let me go" in
order to follow my dreams. So, I'd say considering they still talk to
me and send me B'day presents...they win that award.”

I asked Kylie, What inspired her to
make music?” She said, “I was always into performing, back in the
day, dance and acting. I was that kid who went into "show"
when the fridge was opened and the light went on. I wrote my first
song at 10. I can still remember most of it. Shockingly bad and
brilliant all at once. But I didn't REALLY get serious about
songwriting till about 2 or 3 years ago. I guess the inspiration
comes from a place where I can't NOT write. I love the process of
starting off with an idea and seeing it through to final production.
That amazes me.”

I then asked Kylie, “What are the
main themes for most of your songs?” She said, “Ha! My Mum says I
never write about love in a positive way...she's right. They are all
about one night stands, affairs, being a hooker, never getting the
one you want, and even if you get the one you want they don't turn
out to be what you wanted anyway. Since moving to NYC my songs have
definitely become more edgy in content. The songs I perform (&
can’t afford to record yet) are all pretty sassy, and it seems to
go over well since I'm seriously not that sassy in real life! I've
never been a hooker....let me stress that!”

I continued, “Do you think these
topics will change over time?” Kylie said, “I'm sure! Though I
haven't written that love song yet....it may be out there. My new
song "Mine For The Day" is about your partner having an
open affair, but you wait for that person all night and love them
when you can all day, till they leave again. So, for now there's no
normal love song.”

I asked, “What do you feel are the
ingredients of a good song?” Kylie said, “They say if a song can
be played raw, just guitar and vocals, and it still sounds great
without all the production, then you have a hot song. Think of John
Lennon "Imagine". It can be played in its simplest form and
it's still brilliant. I know some ingredients like a hot hook, great
lyrics and a vibe are important. But a brilliant song has some sort
of magic. I don't know what exactly that magic is....but I want it!!
I’m trying to crack the code!”

I asked, “What has been your biggest
challenge thus far as a musician? Have you been able to overcome that
challenge? If so, how?” Kylie replied, “Well, first up I don't
know if I can call myself a musician. I've been learning guitar for
only two and a half years and while I play out and play every
day.....until I know as many chords as Hendrix I don't think I can
truthfully call myself a muso. But in saying that I'd say the
challenge is an every day one. It's being all of the jobs at once.
Writer, manager, singer, stylist, promoter, assistant, booker and
more. You really have two things going at once, the business and the
creative. You have to be able to do both until you can afford to hire
someone else! So, it's like having two full time jobs on top of the
full time day job I already have! I just try to manage my time very
well by sticking to a project and setting priorities. Though it can
be very overwhelming at times. So...getting some sleep...that's the
major challenge.”

I asked, “If you could change
anything in your past, musically, would you? And if so, what?”
Kylie replied, “I'd have learned an instrument at a young age and
started writing seriously then too. With only a couple of years
behind me I'm trying to catch up!!

I asked, “How have listeners
responded to your music?” Kylie said, “I perform regularly in and
around NYC. Though NYC people are thought of as jaded since they have
so much at their fingertips, I've found the audiences to be very kind
and receptive. A really great listening crowd who want to hear what
your songs are about and they enjoy participating too. I get the
audience involved as much as I can with clapping or singing along, or
handing out percussion instruments for them to play while I sing. And
of course certain songs strike certain people. It's terrific to chat
with people after a show and hear that a song really affected them in
a funny or meaningful way.

I asked Kylie what she wants the
listener to get out of her music and she said, “A little sunshine
rock. Girls can be girlie and still rock. :-)”

Kylie's most memorable venue has
been as she says, “Believe it or not, the NYC subway. Why? I didn't
get mugged, a little girl danced to my song and I got “the eye"
from a cute little old man.”

Kylie Edmond's musical goals for the
remainder of 2009 are to play out as much as possible, write and
record new songs and hopefully to have one of her songs aired on a
television program or even in a movie. She adds, “That'll require
some bubbly!!”

I asked Kylie if she has any
upcoming upcoming gigs in the northeast and she said, “As far north
I'm going is Mahopac NY in the summer....BUT I'd LOVE to do a mini
tour. I produce a female singer/songwriter series called "Girls
Rock the Night" and we definitely do rock in the sassiest of
ways. We are packing out venues in NYC and I think it's time we went
on the road. Anyone want us to play at their venue?? ;-)”

On July 11th we are riding in the National MS Society “Follow The Foothills” Bike ride to raise fund for MS. Our daughter Catherine was diagnosed 6 years ago and is doing well. She gives herself an injection of Rebif – an interferon drug every other day. These drugs help reduce the symptoms by about 30% for about a third of the people who take them. There are very exciting new drugs in clinical trial that promise to be much more effective. Since as early as Lisa can remember there has always been the promise of hope just around the corner, but now it really can happen!!!!!!!!! These drugs are expensive - Catherine is moving from Oregon and a special ed teaching position with insurance to looking for a job in Rhode Island. Her husband’s insurance has a cap on medication coverage per year which only covers one month of her medication!!!!!!!!!!!

The MS Society is working to support research for treatments and a cure. It also advocates for changes in health insurance and services for people with MS.

You can help by sending a check payable to the National MS Society c/o Klaus and Lisa Meissner, 206 Coreys Road, Tupper Lake, NY 12986. We have also been spreading our wings a little and had fun this spring playing in Saratoga Springs, Vermont and New Hampshire. Our next gig is in Norwood, NY at the Sounds of Summer concert on the Village Green. See you soon!

Chelsea Lynn Labate, from Brooklyn, NY is an original folk artist featured on Plattsburgh Pipeline Radio. She is back from her European tour and currently touring the Southeast, captivating audiences with her poetical mastery while finger picking away on her guitar. She is also planning her Northeast tour for the end of the summer, so look for her in a town near you!

I was able to contact Chelsea and ask her a few questions. I asked who her major influences have been and she replied, “I don't like this question. How can I answer this? My biggest influences are life experiences, like when I was homeless and broke in NYC and couldn't afford a winter coat, or when I got stranded on Maui and had to live in a sugar cane field under a bridge. Or watching elders in Florida push their grocery carts around. Or living in an Ashram in the West Village and meditating every morning at 6am with a group of strangers. Or giving up most of my possessions and significant relationships and anything close to a real job to keep my songs alive. These are the building blocks of my songs. And sure there are always songs playing in the background and for me, growing up that was Billie Holiday, the jazz greats, Suzanne Vega, Nick Drake. But I don't study music, I don't know notes.”

I then asked Chelsea what really inspires her to make music and she said, “I was SO TIRED of hearing the same dang songs over and over and over and over... I thought, I want to put my own stories out there!”

I asked “What do you feel are the ingredients of a good song?” Chelsea responded, “I like this question. Number one is the seed, or a word or a theme that the whole thing comes back to. Like a good paragraph. Number two, then I like metaphor. If you hold onto your seed, then all of the metaphors can be as loopy and exotic as you like! I am a sucker for good imagery and lyrics. Number three a catchy, lovely melody. Number four, honesty. Number five, Some sort of positive resolution. An example, if the song is about natural disaster, there has to be some light to the dark side of the coin. The "bum you out" songs don't go over well at live shows for me.”

I asked Chelsea what she wants the listener to get out of her music and she said, “That we are all human. Inspiration. Rest from a hard work week. That life isn't always about practicality. None of this is practical. This is the journey of the soul. Space travel!”

Chelsea Lynn Labate's family has always been there with their strong support over years. She says, “My family has had tremendous understanding. They get my desire to put my art out there. They are proud of me and cheer me on and that is huge! My little cousin Sienna recently auditioned for the talent show with one of my songs. Who else? My best friend Jesse Ruth - she goes on the road with me and makes sure that I eat. And all of my songwriting friends in Brooklyn and all over the East Coast who help to set up shows and house me."

The main themes or topics for Chelsea Lynn Labate's songs have recently been tributes. She says, “I have really been on this tribute song kick. Galileo, Edison, Our Founding Fathers, Marco Polo, and Noah Webster. Do you know anything about Noah Webster? He was an incredible man. He made the dictionary because Americans in different parts of the country spelled, pronounced and used words differently. He thought that all Americans should speak the same way. He gave us a language we can use. This inspires me to write songs.”

I asked Chelsea her she feels these topics will change over time and she replied, “Always. I had a space travel kick that I am glad ended. Also a sad song phase that made me leave NYC.”

I asked, “What has been your biggest challenge as a musician? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?” Chelsea replied, “No, it is one challenge after another. Recently it has been to maintain my health. I am launching a June tour, I just finished stuffing a zillion envelopes with posters that I had to hand write all the info in. My website has some glitch in it that keeps me huffing on 1 800 help lines. I need to get in touch with radio stations. I don't have enough funds to professionally print my CDs so I am doing those by hand. I have insane paper cuts. The AC in my car blew up. I don't have a home of my own. I put in 14 hour days and get paid $0 at the end of the day a lot of times and really, it is all worth it. I will leave this earth as someone who really gave it her all. But! I need to somehow get back on the yoga mat.”

Chelsea Lynn Labate says that her most memorable venue has been Paris. She adds, “I played in this underground tavern. I was SO nervous (and I never get nervous) because there were all these super hip artsy people. They clapped so loud and loved it. They bought a ton of merchandise and loved the poetry. When I get better support, I am going back to Paris to play for them - they are poets over there!”

I asked, “If you could change anything in your past, musically, would you? And if so, what?” She said “Sure. I suppose I'd learn to play guitar! Ha!” Chelsea says listeners responded to her music with great appreciation while on the road. She adds, “It is like running a marathon. Really. With no finish line and there are all these people holding out their hands to high five me along the way.”

When I asked Chelsea about her musical aspirations in 2009 she told me, “To find a manager. Someone who can represent the work and help me to get substantial shows. I want to play at colleges. I also need help booking. I need someone who will help to get my songs on the radio. Then I need a real album with instrumentation. A producer and funding for all of it. Are those musical goals? Or music business goals?”

Either way, Labate's sound has me thinking that she will reach those goals. You can see Chelsea while she is in the area. Chelsea will be performing at Manhattan Pizza in Burlington Vermont on August 15th, 2009. Chelsea will also play August 16th at the Radio Bean with Joshua Panda. Other show dates include Plattsburgh on Sept. 10th at the Coffee Camp and on the 12th at the Koffee Kat. More dates are being added, visit http://www.chelsealynnlabate.com for a full calendar of events.

The members of the
Jaik miller band include JP Bowersock on guitar (also producer of
eponymous debut CD), Garth MacAleavey on guitar, keyboards and
vocals, Jaik Miller on guitar, vocals, and some glockenspiel, Brian
Murphey on the bass, Christopher Markwood Miller on the drums and Max
Tucker on drums, percussion, and vocals.

I
asked Jaik a popular listener question, when and how the band was
formed. Jaik replied, “TRUStY was put together in the spring of
2005 to showcase some of my tunes at NOLA jazz fest. We were
essentially a guitar/bass duo with me singing and Michael Ferrero
(brother of o.g. bassist Marco) on video projections. We got some
awesome gigs and did a sweet recording with Matt Stein. Met max at
our first LES show at sidewalk.... Upon scoring a cameo on USA's
"Monk" we met Max's school chum Garth, moved him to NYC
from LA, made the record with JP and *poof*... JMBizzle was born!!
Took two seconds.”

I
asked Jaik, “Why
did you decide on the Jaik Miller band as the Band's name? Have you
changed the band's name in the past?” Jaik responded, “Har! Jaik
Miller Band was the last thing I wanted to call this or any other
band I have ever been a part of. The band was originally called
'TRUStY'; despite its case sensitive nature the intellectual property
ownership was challenged by another (tho defunct) "trusty",
a 1990's pop punk band from Tennessee, I believe....we then changed
our name to "Yama Bandit" but nobody understood what we
were saying (mama bendit? Jorma pendant? Shwarma Conduit?) and upon
the suggestion of our original bass player's girlfriend's buddy who
she ran into at the Fillmore, I reluctantly acquiesced to the will of
the band and JMB (the name) was born (again).”

I
asked Jaik, “What genre of music do you consider your work to be?”
He replied, “ I have always been a genre-buster; one of those real
pains in the butt in the eyes of the marketing department. The JMB
thing is fairly easy to pigeon hole...it's classic rock. Garth and JP
totally jam. It's like having Slash and Jerry in the same band.
Totally fkn rawk! Which is funny to me because I am so punk rock in
my heart and SOUL in my loins.”

I
asked, “Who are some of your major influences?” Jaik says, “As
a songwriter I owe a huge debt of gratitude to so many 20th century
tunesmiths... I particularly admire the work of Chris Whitley, Bob Marley, Patti
Smith, Suzanne Vega, Husker Du, Garcia/Hunter and John Lennon. My
favorite singers include Otis Redding, Donny Hathaway, Marley again
(his phrasing...damn!) and i guess Nina Simone. My all time favorite
guitar hero is mister Warren Haynes!”

Jaik
says the main themes or topics for most of the Bands songs are “Um,
lots of songs about angels and aliens. Oh, and girls. and dogs, of
course!”

I
asked “What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Has the band
been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?” Jaik says, “
Hmmm... Okay the obvious thing would probably be doing our best to
survive in these trying economic times. But then again; we are living
the dream. So there you go!”

I
asked Jaik what are the most notable venues he has played in and he
relied, “I have performed in many big rooms such as Roseland in
NYC and outdoor venues like SPAC and Merriweather Post Pavillion. As
JMB I guess the coolest gig we have done thus far was an Obama rally
last fall with Crosby/Nash and Bruce Hornsby.”

The songs the band
performs most are 4447, California, Another Good Look, Faceless,
Social Disease, Lil seed Boogie as well as some covers too!

I asked “How have
listeners responded to your debut album?” Jaik says, “So far so
awesome. JP absolutely killed it on the production end, bringing that
trashy Bowersock to these otherwise pristine tracks. The songs don't
suck and we executed them pretty well. I figure that's how we keep
getting on all those "top albums of the year" lists.”

I asked, “Is
anything new in the works for the JMB?” Jaik replied, “We just
recorded a new version of The Who's "join together" for a
new company called Planet Muzic which is hellbent on changing the
recorded music biz once and for all...and for the better. We starting
to work on our next album while planning a major release of our debut
for autumn. Personally I am working with a young woman who is one of
the sickest talents on the face of this earth. I'm learning new stuff
every day.”

Finally I asked
Jaik, “Is their anything you would like your fans/ future fans to
know?” He said, “When you sing, you remember how to fly. Oh yeah,
and this... sparrows eat chicken.”

    - Scott Osika

Otherwise, one of Plattsburgh Pipeline’s featured artists, has been in the making for the last five years. The band finally found its completion about a year and a half ago with the addition of Matt Beckett and DJ Lock Mess, who brought together the band’s unique sound. The name “Otherwise” was chosen because it leaves room for the bands musical evolution and also references the band’s genre without being too specific.
Otherwise blends the sounds of Reggae, Hip- Hop, and Electronica. They are based out of Vernon, Connecticut and are a well rounded group. Otherwise brings together diverse talents to create a seriously unique vibe that is really worth checking out. Otherwise recently visited the Monopole in downtown Plattsburgh and if you missed the bands performance check them out on April 25th! Some of the bands major influences are The Marley Family, The Black Eyed Peas, DJ Shadow, 311, The New Deal, Aphex Twin, Daft Punk, Pink Floyd and there are many more.
Otherwise band members include Dan Porn on Vocals and Keyboard, Gabe Spector on Guitar and Vocals, Travis Zuidema on Drums and Electronics, Matt Beckett on Bass and Vocals, and DJ Lock Mess on the Turntables, Samples, Electronics and Vocals!
I asked, “What is the biggest challenge as a band you’ve been confronted with, and were you able to overcome that challenge?” Gabe Spector replied, “Our biggest challenge is not taking on too much at once. Otherwise runs two Connecticut festivals: Festivus and Uberfest. Now that we’ve learned how to balance our event planning with our main focus (writing and performing our music) we’ve hit what feels more like our true stride.”
The main themes of the songs written by Otherwise deal with what each band member experiences as they all contribute with the writing process. Gabe says, “We write about love, relationships, hardships, victories, the ecstasy of communal musical experiences, politics...” He adds, “These topics will change, but they also seem to evolve as we change, and our learning helps us to see things in a new way.”
Otherwise hopes that the listener will find truth within their music. They hope listeners can identify with the thoughts, feelings and emotions expressed through their music. Gabe says, “We play lots of original songs like Persuasion, Propaganda Wars, This Beat, and Rise, as well as a cover or two including a remix of Sun is Shining by Bob Marley and Deep Sun by The New Deal.”
Otherwise has played all over New England and the band says, “some of our favorite venues are Sully’s Pub in Hartford, Bishop’s Lounge in Northampton, Monopole in Plattsburgh, Rhinobar in Newport, Bill’s Bar in Boston, and Crash Mansion in NYC. We’ve also played Camp Bisco and Wormfest, amongst many other festivals, including our own of course.”
Otherwise is releasing their second full-length album, “Come with Music,” this spring! They say, “We’re very excited about this CD, and we feel like it is a collection of songs that encompasses our club/ reggae/electronica genre-bending tactics.” The new album will be available at their live shows, as well as on amazon. HERE! You can also purchase Otherwise’s EP (available now) at otherwiseband.com.
The band says “We hope that our friends, fans, and friends/fans to-be will come out and rage with us at the Monopole in downtown Plattsburgh on April 25, and also at Club Metronome in Burlington on April 24. Cheers!”
