Hardy Water Lily Planting Instructions:

For best results, we recommend planting aquatic plants in Fabric Plant Pots. Use a heavy clay loam or a pre-packaged pond plant media specific for aquatic plants. If you try to use a soil that is light and fluffy, like a traditional potting soil, you will end up with a big mess on your hands. For your water lily to thrive and flower, you will also need to feed it once a month with aquatic plant fertilizer.

Once you've gathered your supplies and your bare root water lily plant has arrived from Play It Koi, it's time to plant. Keep your plant wet while you are planting it so that the leaves don't dry out. Hardy water lilies are planted using a loam garden soil and 2-3 fertilizer tablets. Hardy lilies grow horizontally across the container so a wide pot is necessary for planting (a 14 or 16-inch fabric pot is the best container). Fill your planting container to be about half-full with soil. Place 2 fertilizer tablets in the soil. You are now ready to plant.

Locate the rhizome, which is also commonly known as “the root” or the base of the plant from which the stems emerge. The rhizome should be planted at one edge of the container and at an angle of about 45 degrees with the crown exposed towards the center of the pot. Gently add soil over top being sure to keep the crown (the top of the root formation) exposed. Tamp down the soil to compact it a bit. Then, top with a ½ to 1 inch of pea gravel. The pea gravel helps to make sure the soil won't float away. Again though, do not cover the crown with the pea gravel or stones, as this may hinder the plant's growthl. Your plant is now ready to place in the pond.

Find a suitable location for your hardy water lily to rest. Most aquatics require at least 5 hours of direct sunlight for optimum growth. Water lilies like calm waters, so be sure to position them away from waterfalls, sprays, or fountains. The plant can be lowered to a depth of 6 inches to begin with, and then lowered to deeper depths as the plant grows.

Hardy lilies should be planted in early spring and should be fertilized every 4-6 weeks. Be sure that the fertilizer isn’t directly in contact with the lily’s roots, as it may burn them. They bloom from June through September depending on the weather and become dormant during the colder months. As spring approaches, growth will begin again.

Once your hardy lilies are potted, you’ll want to place them in your pond at depths appropriate for their size, and in still areas of the pond. Avoid placing them near waterfalls and fountains. Large to medium hardy lily varieties should be placed at depths between 18-30 inches. Small varieties prefer water depths between 12-24 inches. Finally, dwarf varieties should be placed at water depths between 6-12 inches.

Tropical Water Lily Planting Instructions:

Tropical water lilies feature large flowers that are fragrant and borne on stems rising above the water’s surface. They need at least 6 hours of full sun each day and require warm, still water at temperatures of at least 70 degrees, or warmer. Typically, tropical lilies are treated as annuals, except in USDA Zone 10. In other regions, they can be overwintered in indoor greenhouses. Day-blooming tropical lilies bear flowers that bloom in the hours between mid-day and dusk. Night-blooming lilies have the opposite schedule, and their flowers open between dusk and mid-morning.

Tropical lilies require more care than hardy varieties and are grown from tubers. For best results, we recommend planting in a large, wide containers, and using a heavy clay loam or mud. We recommend fertilizing your tropical lily monthly.

Once you've gathered your supplies and your bare root water lily plant has arrived from Play It Koi, it's time to plant. Keep your plant wet while you are planting it so that the leaves don't dry out. Fill your water lily container approximately 2/3 full with your soil, then place the lily in the center of the container. Pack the soil approximately 2 inches above and around the roots of the plant, allowing another 2 inches between the crown of the plant and the top of the container. Once your tropical water lily is potted, it is ready to be placed in your pond. Tropical water lilies should be placed such that their crown is between 6-24” below the water’s surface. Start by placing your tropical water lily in shallower waters until it is established.

Water Lotus Planting Instructions:

Lotus flowers are a beautiful addition to any koi pond or water garden. While they are considered a hardier flower than many, certain conditions are necessary to grow them well. Lotus flowers are usually planted in the mid-spring and early summer season. Lotus flowers need certain conditions to grow well, and may not even bloom until the second summer. During the winter, you may leave your lotus in the pond, as long as the tubers (the roots) are protected from ice.

To grow a lotus from a tuber, you will first want to find a nice sunny spot to grow your lotus and a suitable sized pot. A large lotus requires a pot 24-48 inches in diameter, medium lotuses require a pot 16-30 inches in diameter, and small lotuses require pots that are less than 5 inches in diameter. Keep in mind, if you choose a pot with holes in it and plan to place the pot in a pond or water garden, it is likely that the lotuses will eventually start to grow outside of the pot.

Once a pot and a spot are chosen, fill the pot with amended soil, leaving approximately 4 inches at the top. Fill the pot with water until it rises about 2-3 inches above the soil. Next, plant the tuber with the growing tips pointed up. Note: It’s important NOT to bury the tuber completely in the soil as it may rot - be sure the tips are uncovered.

Water hardness, the accumulation of minerals in the soil, can affect the growth of lotuses that are not grown in ponds. To prevent this, flush out the water in the soil by overfilling the pot. While unnecessary, it still may be beneficial to apply this process to pots submerged in a pond as well. Lotuses also require at least 3-4 weeks of temperatures above 80°F to start blooming. To speed up the process, you can place an aquatic water heater in the container for a month. In colder climates, it is important to protect the tubers from freezing during the winter. Koi fish have a habit of sometimes disturbing the soil, while goldfish don’t usually cause problems. If your koi are starting to interfere with your lotus pots, place some stones over the soil to prevent damage.

Fertilization is also an essential part of lotus care, but it should only be introduced once the leaves are visible from the plant. It is important not to fertilize the plants too soon in the planting process. Once the leaves are visible, you should add fertilizer to promote growth and flowering. Re-fertilize the plants every 2-3 weeks.

Pruning is another essential part of maintenance to grow healthy lotuses. Yellow leaves should be removed. It is recommended you only cut the yellow leaves that are visible above water, and never to cut those growing beneath the surface of the water. After about 2 years of growth, it will be important to move the plant into a bigger pot to allow the lotus to grow more.

Pests may prove to be an obstacle when growing lotuses, since insecticides and oil-based sprays and detergents can damage the leaves of the plant. For insecticide issues like aphids, it is best to use diatomaceous earth powder, but be careful! While diatomaceous earth powder is an effective treatment for aphids, it is not safe for aquatic life, such as koi fish, which may reside in your pond. So be sure to treat your plant only outside of your pond and return it to the pond only when fully washed.

Bog plants and Marginal water plants are adapted to having their roots submerged, and do best along the pond edges, where soil is moist but there is not a lot of standing water. For best results, we recommend planting aquatic plants in Fabric Plant Pots so water can drain. Using a soil that is light and fluffy like potting soil will cause a good deal of headache. For your bog plants to thrive, you will need to feed it once a month with aquatic plant fertilizer.

Once you’ve gathered your supplies and your bare root bog plants have arrived, it is time to plant them. Keep your plant wet while you’re planting it, so that the leaves don’t dry out. Use a loam garden soil and fertilize with PondTabbs Fertilizer Tabs, about once every 1-2 months. Start by selecting the right size plant pot or fabric planting bag, with holes, which allow oxygen to reach the plant roots. Fill your plant pot approximately ¾ full with the loam garden soil, then make a hole in the center of the soil large enough for the plant’s roots. While placing it in the hole, hold the plant upright and fill the hole with soil around the plant’s roots. Pack the soil around the crown of the plant, so that it holds the plant upright. However, do not cover the crown of the plant.

Once your bog plant is potted, we advise selecting a shady area in your pond so that it may properly adjust to its new environment. Depending upon the size and variety of plant, water levels over the top of the pot should be between ½ inch to 3 inches deep.

They provide shade and excellent habitat for fish and other pond inhabitants. As the name suggests, submerged plants thrive below the water’s surface, with all or most of the existing up to two feet underwater. It should be noted that some submerged plants do grow as emergent plants, where portions of the plant, like leaves and flowers, grow above the water’s surface. Submerged or oxygenating plants should be planted in shallow pots with loam soil, aquatic plant media, or pea gravel to submerge them.

Unlike true floating plants, these aquatic species should have their roots potted in smaller containers, using loam soil. So once your bare root floating plants arrive, you will need to select small containers in which to plant them. Fill your container about ¾ full with loam soil, and place the plant’s roots into the hole. Pack the soil around the roots and the crown of the plant to ensure that it stands upright. Once your floating plants are potted, place the containers on pond shelves, so that plant leaves and flowers appear to float. These should be fertilized when necessary.

There is no planting required. They will simply float on top of the water column.

Oftentimes during transit, the larger floating plants, like water hyacinth and water lettuce will “drop” their roots especially as it nears hotter summer months. This is a natural response and protection mechanism of the plant. While it may seem alarming at first, this is not to worry and they will begin to regrow their roots in a few weeks once in their new environment.

Some pond owners like to put their floating plants into protective floating plant islands. While not required, this does prevent the floating plants from being swept away into a skimmer and protect the roots from being eaten by hungry koi.

Plant Your Bare Root Water Lily:

Once you've gathered your supplies and your bare root water lily plant has arrived, it's time to plant. The rhizome should be planted at one edge of the container with the rhizome planted at an angle of about 45 degrees with the crown exposed. Gently add soil over top being sure to keep the crown (the top of the root formation) exposed. Tamp down the soil to compact it a bit. Then, top with an 1-2 inch to 1 inch of pea gravel. The pea gravel helps to make sure the soil won't float away. The plant can be lowered to a depth of 6 inches to begin with, and then lowered to deeper depths as the plant grows.

Most aquatics require at least 5 hours of direct sunlight for optimum growth. Water lilies like calm waters, so be sure to position them away from waterfalls, sprays or fountains.

Feeding & Blooming!

Hardy lilies should be planted in early spring and should be fertilized every 4-6 weeks. They bloom from June through September depending on the weather and become dormant during the colder months. As spring approaches, growth will begin again.

Enjoy!

Plants are an essential component of any pond ecosystem, and aside from the aesthetic appeal, they offer many benefits to fish and other aquatic life. They provide a source of shelter from predators and often serve as a food source for pond inhabitants. Aquatic plants improve water quality in that they oxygenate and filter harmful nitrogen and phosphates from pond water. Plants also consume nutrients that may otherwise contribute to algal blooms.

Most aquatic plants require 4-6 hours of direct sunlight to thrive and grow, and because of this, most pond experts recommend placing your pond in a sunny location, rather than a shady one. What to do if you are limited to a shady location? Do not let the lack of light discourage you, there are plenty of shade-loving aquatic plant species that will add color, life, and texture to your water garden – you can still build the pond of your dreams in the shade! Here are some tips and recommendations to help you do so.

It’s useful to highlight the potential benefits and drawbacks of shade with respect to the health of your pond ecosystem. The pros can most certainly outweigh the cons, especially when you properly mitigate the potential problems associated with those shady environments. For example, the pond-side trees offer shady habitat but can create excess organic debris that may decompose and generates gases that are harmful to aquatic life. In this case, it’s best to use a leaf net over the pond during spring and fall months, and/or install a pond skimmer, to trap and remove the free-floating debris before it begins decomposing and impacting your pond’s water quality.

Some of the benefits of a shaded pond include cooler water temperatures, which contribute to an increase in levels of dissolved oxygen available to fish and other aquatic life in your pond. Cooler water temperatures also present an ideal breeding ground for the growth of beneficial bacteria, which assist in maintaining pond health. Decreased levels of light will also prohibit algae from photosynthesizing and proliferating in your pond.

Shadier ponds do not necessarily contain fewer aquatic plants; however, the lack of light may mean you are limited to certain plant species. Some of the more popular species of pond plants are typically sun-lovers; however, there are some varieties of lilies, lotus, and other floating types that still do well in partial shade, or 3-4 hours of direct sunlight. That is, these and other varieties still thrive in the shade, in that their foliage will grow and shine brightly, but they likely will not flower as they would in the sun.

How to Store Bulbs for the Winter

While tropical plants look great in your garden during the warmer summer months, they can struggle to survive during the winter. The best way to prevent damage and possible death of your beautiful foliage is to bring in the plant bulbs during the cold months. Here are some helpful tips to prepare your bulbs for the winter:

Dig up your bulbs. It is a good idea to wait until after the first frost to dig up your bulbs. The frost will kill off some of the leaves, signaling to the plant that it’s time to go dormant. Try to dig as carefully as possible to prevent any damage to the bulb. Damaged bulbs can rot in storage over time.

Trim back the foliage. The amount you trim will depend on the plant itself. For elephant ears and taro plants, cut the stems down to about 6 inches. For canna bulbs, trim to about 2-3 inches.

Wash the dirt from the bulb, but do not scrub the bulb clean. Scrubbing the bulb will cause damage to the outer layer and eventually lead to rot.

Cure the bulbs by storing them in a dry place, like a closet, basement, or a garage, for a few days. Make sure there is good air circulation. Curing the bulbs allows the outer layer to toughen up and prevent the plant from rotting.

Wrap the cured bulbs in paper bags or newspaper and store them in a cool and dry place for the rest of the winter. If you have room, you can also store bulbs in a fridge.

Check on the bulbs every month or so. If a bulb starts to rot for any reason, it is important to throw it out as quickly as possible so it doesn’t harm the other bulbs. If you notice several of your bulbs are succumbing to rot, it could be too moist of a location for storage.

Tips for Controlling an Aphid Problem

Aphids are a common pest that can be tricky to manage depending on what kinds of plants and animals you have in your pond or water garden. While they may seem tiny and harmless, they have the potential to kill your plants by feeding on them. Aphids are also carriers of various viruses that can pose additional threats to your water garden.

There are roughly 4,000 species of aphids around the world. They are all very small, about 1/8 an inch long, but vary in color. Many aphids start their lifecycle in the Spring, when they hatch from eggs that have matured over the winter months. They have a complex reproductive system, however, that allows them to reproduce asexually, producing live nymphs, throughout the warmer months. Because of this, aphids reproduce rapidly and can quickly become a nuisance. Here is a list of treatments that may help you overcome your aphid problem.

Oil sprays are an effective way to treat certain plants, but not all. Lotuses, for example, can die if their leaves come in contact with oil. Oil sprays are harmless to koi and goldfish and can be bought in stores or even made at home. Some people have had success with simply spraying cooking oil on their plants, although others have mentioned that such solutions have killed certain plants, like water lettuce. A creative solution can be made by combining a few drops of a mix of essential oils like peppermint, clove, and rosemary in a spray bottle with water. Neem oil can be added to water in the same way and has shown to be effective against aphids.

Tomato plants, a member of the nightshade family, contain alkaloids that are toxic to aphids. One unique solution that doesn’t involve oil is chopping up and soaking tomato leaves in water overnight, and spraying the resulting tea onto infested areas. Similarly, a spray solution of water, a few drops of dish soap, and a touch of cayenne pepper have shown to be successful against aphids.

Diatomaceous earth powder is another effective treatment for aphids, that are harmless to plants. Unfortunately, diatomaceous earth should not be used in ponds or water gardens with fish or other aquatic animals, as it has found to be harmful to your fish's gill health.

If you want to avoid chemicals, oils, and soaps, you can wash the plants leaves using a hose. A powerful blast of water can knock the aphids into the water, and can be a snack for the fish in the pond. If your fish aren’t interested in the aphids, however, be sure that the uneaten aphids do not swim back to the plants. In all of these solutions, it may be best to take the plants out of the water to treat the aphids.

Ladybugs are another non-chemical/oil alternative to an aphid problem. Ladybugs love snacking on aphids and can eat upwards to 5,000 aphids and similar insects over their one-year life span.

Insecticides should always be a last resort. If used, make sure to remove all infested plants and treat them outside of your pond. Before reintroducing the plants, rinse them with a garden hose to get rid of the harmful chemicals. With all treatments, it is important to carefully monitor how much is used and where. While aphids can be irritating, there are many insects that are beneficial to your garden ecosystem that may be repelled or even killed by some of these methods.

Prevention is the most ideal solution. Aphids are attracted to yellowing leaves, so make sure to regularly prune plants and clip away yellowing or dying leaves. Aphids also like fruiting trees and may lay their eggs on nearby trees and plants. Treating trees and other near by land plants for aphid eggs during the winter months can prevent a spring time explosion.

If you are going to use an an insecticide, we recommend using a fogger for more even disbursement of the insecticide across the plants. By doing so, you improve your chances of not burning the plants with the insecticide. Here is a video to share how we do this using a standard propane fogger + 16 oz of standard mineral oil (found at any drugstore) + 1/2oz of Essentria IC3 Insecticide concentrate. Enjoy!

How to Grow and Maintain Lotus Flowers

Lotus flowers are a beautiful addition to any koi pond or water garden. While they are considered a hardier flower than many, certain conditions are necessary in order to grow them well.

Lotus flowers are usually planted in the mid-spring season. To grow a lotus from a tuber, you will first want to find a nice sunny spot to grow your lotus and a deep pot to plant the flower. A large lotus requires a pot 24-48 inches in diameter, medium lotuses require a pot 18-30 inches in diameter, and small lotuses require pots that are at least 12-15 inches in diameter. Keep in mind, if you choose a pot with holes on it and plan to place the pot in a pond or water garden, it is likely that the lotuses will eventually start to grow outside of the pot. Once a pot and a spot are chosen, fill the pot with amended soil, leaving approximately 4 inches at the top. Fill the pot with water until it rises about 2-3 inches above the soil. Next, plant the tuber with the growing tips pointed up. It may be necessary to weigh the tuber with some stones to make sure the tuber does not float to the top of the pot. The pot can then be placed in a pond or water garden. It is important not to fertilize the plants too soon. Wait to add fertilizer until after standing leaves are visible from the plant. Re-fertilize the plants every 2-3 weeks.

Lotus flowers need certain conditions to grow well, and may not even bloom until the second summer. Water hardness can affect the growth of lotuses that are not grown in ponds. To prevent an accumulation of minerals in the soil, flush out the water in the soil by over filling the pot. While unnecessary, it still may be beneficial to apply this process to pots submerged in a pond as well. Lotuses also require at least 3-4 weeks of temperatures above 80°F to start blooming. To speed up the process, you can even place an aquatic water heater in the container for a month. In colder climates, it is important to protect the tubers from freezing during the winter. Koi fish have a habit of sometimes disturbing the soil, while gold fish don’t usually cause problems. If your koi are starting to get too involved in the lotus pots, place some stones over the soil to prevent damage.

Pests prove to be an obstacle when growing lotuses, since insecticides and oil-based sprays and detergents can damage the leaves of the plant. Only solutions like diatomaceous earth powder can be used for cases such as an aphid infestation but be careful! While diatomaceous earth powder is an effective treatment for aphids, it is not safe for aquatic life, such as koi fish, which may reside in your pond.

So you finally finished your water garden construction. You have finally come to the fun part of creating your water garden: picking the flowers and plants that will make your water garden a beautiful oasis.

Not only should you consider beauty when you are picking your plants, but you must also remember that plants provide another, more important value to your garden, biological life. Biological life helps maintain your pool by doing what they would do in nature.

Be sure to pay attention to your climate and area. Some plants can simply not survive in certain conditions, so it is wise to do your research before hand. Talking with your local dealer will give you some idea of what plants you can and cannot have in your pond.

Lotus Plants

Undoubtedly, since your pond contains Koi, a tropical fish, you may want to keep with the theme and place Lotus plants in your pond. Pretty much everyone with a tropical water garden will want a Lotus plant because the beauty is simply unmatched by other flowers.

Lotus plants provide beautiful blooms, and a smell that is unmatched. However, unless you live in an area that sustains temperatures higher then 65 degree Fahrenheit, you will need to have to have a place to house your Lotus plants during the colder months. A greenhouse setup specifically for water plants will work the best.

Lotus plants require soil, and a large amount of sunlight. They should be planted in water about 2 to 3 feet deep during the warmer months, and indoors during the colder months.

Water Hyacinths

If you simply do not have the time to plant and maintain your water garden’s foliage, or you are somewhat lazy when it comes to gardening, you may want to consider adding Water Hyacinths. Water hyacinths have become very popular recently because of their simplicity. They do not require any type of soil or planting, you must simply throw them into the water. Only minimal time is needed to anchor them down so that they do not float all over the pond freely.

Water Hyacinths are not only pretty, but are also very functional as well. These plants aid in the fight against both algae and blanket weeds.

One downside when having Water Hyacinths is the fact that they will take over your pond and yard if you allow them. Water hyacinths are very invasive, and will spread if allowed. In extreme cases, it may even jump the fence and take over the neighbors yard as well. Once they have caused this kind of infestation, it is notoriously difficult to get rid of them.

Hidden But Functional Plants

Alternatively, you may want to consider investing in plants that are not necessary seen. These plants live below the water line, and provide many needed functions to your pond. Some help you battle algae, put oxygen back into the water, or feed your fish for you.

You can find these plants in bundles at your local pet store or Koi dealer. The majority of underwater plants will not need additional support during the winter, so once you place them in the water, you may not think twice about them again. However, the benefits that you gain from having these types of plants make up for the fact that you are not able to actually see them.
