The Woodbridge resident could definitely serve as an example for other lottery players as he is one of the few people in the world who won the lottery four times. He used to be a postal worker but given the fact that he won four jackpots in less than eight years, it comes as no surprise that he chose to retire. The last prize he scooped was a massive $500,000 by hitting the winning combination in the Virginia Lottery’s Millionaire Mania one week ago. With this jackpot, his total winnings since 2005 exceed $2 million.

The luckiest American lottery player

For a game that pits players against seemingly insurmountable odds, lottery remains an endless source of pleasant surprises for the most dedicated ones. Melvyn Wilson is the living proof that sometimes life is stranger than fiction as he achieved something that most people don’t even dare dream of. While regular lottery players are hoping that one day they will strike lucky and win the jackpot, many would gladly settle for a second tier prize. In the end even this proves to be a bridge too far for most of them.

Winners keep playing out of inertia but they don’t expect to win a second time and no one actually believes that he can become a four-time lottery winner. As lottery players go, Mr. Wilson is a veteran as he has been purchasing tickets for decades but his first significant prize came back in 2004. He won $25,000 on a scratch card ticket, which provided him with the impetus to persevere and his dedication paid off. The next year he won twice playing the same game and covered all previous investments.

2005 was the year of the lucky break

Winning tens of thousands of dollars in scratch cards is a performance but this was surpassed by the $1 million scooped in 2005. That year Melvyn Wilson entered the select club of lottery millionaires but he didn’t stop there and months later he won another prize worth $500,000. For 7 years he enjoys the good life and occasionally purchased lottery tickets without winning another big prize, but he kept his hopes alive. One week ago he won another prize of $500,000 and became a four-time lottery winner, setting a new record for the longest winning streak.

Buying Virginia Lottery’s Millionaire Mania scratch tickets proved to be an inspired decision with this latest prize allowing him to surpass the psychological barrier of $2 million. Mr. Wilson retired six years ago but despite his remarkable performance he doesn’t brag about winning the lottery four times. Instead of claiming that he has a miraculous solution for winning, he says that he was simply lucky to purchase a lottery ticket that day. His attitude is just as impressive as his winning streak and should inspire his peers.

Most of those who play lottery games are satisfied with the fact that the draws take place twice a week and even more often if we think about Little Lotto. There are of course players who seek adrenaline on a daily basis and they don’t like the idea of being deprived of their chance to win every day. This is the audience that has the Dailies as the game of choice and Pick 3 or Pick 4 are the most popular dailies.

How to play Pick 3 and Pick 4 lottery games

It is worth mentioning that these games are also known Cash 3 and Cash 4, with the name varying from state to state but the rules stay the same. Players are supposed to choose a three or four digit number ranging from 0 to 999 or 9999 if they prefer to play Cash 4 for a.k.a. Pick 4. There are two reasons for why the dailies are favored by some players over Lotto and Little Lotto and these are better odds and higher drawing frequency.

One can play the Dailies twice a day from Monday to Saturday and once on Sundays, and there are two distinct ways to win. By playing the straight, one needs to have his chosen number drawn by the machine, while by playing the box he can win with any number that contains a combination of the three or four digits. The costs of a play slip are also lower than Lotto and in most states each play will cost only $. 50 or $1, so basically everyone can afford to put his luck to the test.

Fixed amounts instead of sums determined by pool of players

This is one important observation about the Dailies, because those who play Pick 3 or Pick 4 will not have their winnings diminished or boosted depending on how many players buy tickets. In most states there is a standard prize amount and basically if the number you choose is picked, you will be awarded $500 for a betting slip that cost $1. The payout is generous but it is hard not to notice the fact that while you have 1 chance in 1000 to win, you only get 500 times more than what you invested.

Many regard this as the only tax that people are ready to line up and pay gladly, but since private lotteries are not allowed in the United States, the state operated ones can afford to impose their rules. The players need to choose whether to go for the exact or any of the three/four digits when playing the Dailies and the decision depends on whether they place the emphasis on improving the odds or potential payouts.

Those who visit Spain for recreation or work-related purposes won’t include Sodeto on the must-see places and most of them don’t even know where this tiny village is located. Lottery enthusiasts on the other hand, might have heard about it and remember the stories about this being the luckiest village in the world. Two years ago the farmers who live here won the El Gordo lottery and their lives were changed forever, now serving as a source of inspiration for other lottery players in Spain and elsewhere.

All town residents got rich overnight

The unique structure of the Spanish lottery made it possible for almost all those living in Sodeto to become rich overnight. Lottery officials print 99,000 unique series of the lottery tickets and then sell them at a price of €200 apiece, or divided into 10 smaller parts called decimos. Given the fact that very few lottery players can afford to pay the full price of a ticket, the vast majority of Spanish players settle for a decimo. Even those who win a ticket worth only €20 will have plenty of reasons to rejoice, especially the residents of a small village such as Sodeto where the cost of living is relatively low.

When the Christmas holidays draw near, small communities use to appoint a local organization or individual to purchase tickets on their behalf and then each member buys whatever they like. The Housewives’ Association was the one in charge of buying the tickets in the first place and then try to sell as many of them as possible in Sodeto. After all the residents were served, the unclaimed ticket was supposed to be returned but some members chose to buy them for themselves which proved an inspired decision. This explains why they won’t significantly more than the other villagers.

The jackpots changed Sodeto forever

Before winning the main prize the residents were trying to make ends meet from month-to-month and although they were generally successful, prosperity eluded them for years. In Spain, purchasing El Gordo is almost a tradition and people bought them for the chance of winning sizable amounts and for charitable purposes. Everyone has the idea of winning the jackpot in the back of their minds, but most accept the fact that they are huge underdogs yet still buy the tickets out of habit or obligation.

Now that they won the jackpot and were officially tagged the luckiest village in the world, the residents of Sodeto witness how their lives changed suddenly and dramatically. Essentially each resident scooped an amount of €100,000 and paid all their outstanding debts and mortgage, while investing in practical objects such as tractors and home improvements. Not all those who declined the Housewives’ Association invitational buying tickets or lost him after the winning draw, are still resentful. Some are glad for what they have and don’t really think about how they’ve missed out on a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Most errors lead to nasty consequences and those who commit them are trying to cope with the aftermath while hoping that the lesson serves them well. A single mother made such a mistake herself, but in the end this proved to be quite fortunate as she became the latest lottery millionaire. The mistake made her $14 million richer and what’s more exciting is the fact that she didn’t spend more than one dollar on a lucky lottery slip, that she had no intention of buying in the first place.

Paying in cash has its perks

Lottery players are frequently purchasing their tickets personally and asked the salesperson to give them the lottery tickets after handing them a credit card. Thuan Le didn’t want to lose time in this manner and used a vending machine which requires coins to be inserted before the potentially lucky lottery tickets are released. This is exactly what she did when entering a local CVS store and operating the same self-service Lotto machine she always used for buying tickets. Since she paid in cash, an error occurred and instead of inserting five dollars she slipped an additional one and this set the wheels in motion.

Naturally, she didn’t think twice and used the odd dollar to purchase an additional SuperLotto Plus ticket and less than one week later this proved to be the best investment ever. The winning numbers in the aforementioned lottery were 5, 25, 32, 33 and 43 with the Mega number being 26. This combination of numbers resulted in a massive payout of $14 million which is a life changer for the hard-working single mother who has four sons and used to struggle from paycheck to paycheck.

Suddenly, the future looks bright

The vendors in the lottery store told the media that when she realized that she is the latest lottery winner, Thuan Le ran out screaming and cheering. She is a frequent lottery player and used to buy tickets with her good friend, but this time she was alone and made the mistake of inserting one more dollar in addition to the regular five. With so much money in the bank, she can afford things that were not long ago out of reach, such as visiting her parents in Vietnam or traveling around the world with her family.

At least in theory, she could’ve canceled the order and retrieve the additional dollar, but fortunately she wasn’t that cheap and chose to give it a spin. Buying the second SuperLotto Plus ticket was a judgment call and looking back at what she did two weeks ago, it goes without saying that she was the right person in the right place. The odds of winning the main prize in this lottery are one to 42 millions, four times better than the ones in Powerball but still a long shot.

Every lottery player in the United States waited anxiously for the Saturday night drawing, knowing that the Powerball jackpot was inching closer to $200 million. The number of bought tickets soared but at the end of the day the main prize was rolled over once again, shifting excitement to Wednesday’s drawing. If players keep purchasing tickets at the same rate, it is only fair to assume that the lottery officials were accurate in their estimations and the Powerball jackpot will exceed $222 million.

10 consecutive draws without a winner

The odds of winning the Powerball are one in 176 millions, so it is not really surprising that every now and then nobody succeeds in matching the winning numbers in consecutive draws. This time the streak was extended to 10 and players hope that after five weeks of drought, one of them will emerge victorious and scoop one of the largest prizes in lottery history. Higher amounts have been won in Powerball lottery in the past but whenever the main prize exceeds $200 million the winner is entitled to expect to join the club of the richest lottery winners in history.

The current winless streak began on April 3 when the 40 million jackpot was rolled over for the first time and slowly climbed to the aforementioned value. Assuming that somebody wins it on Wednesday, they will have to decide whether to choose the annuity or settle for the lump payment which will translate into an amount revolving around $150 million. This is in fact the worst-case scenario and history tells us that official estimations are frequently exceeded due to the fact that more people than expected buy tickets.

Five new Powerball millionaires

The media and hardcore fans of the lottery might pay little attention to second tier prizes, but this doesn’t mean that the Powerball failed to make any millionaires at all. Five lucky ticket buyers joined the select club with California being the only state to award two prizes to its residents. This is great news for the state who recently joined the popular American lottery although far it didn’t fully adhere to Powerball rules. Its residents can’t take advantage of the Power Play option as these conflicts with California laws regulating the price structure, therefore it is not possible for them to double their second tier prizes.

Elsewhere, 65 lottery players scooped prizes worth $10,000 each and one in five were inspired enough to pay the additional dollar to activate the Power Play option. For third tier prizes, it increases the amounts four times turning the award into a substantial $40,000. Powerball players who are yet to check their numbers against the winning ones should know that the balls extracted on Saturday were 7, 12, 26, 36, 40 and the Powerball was 17.

Last week the most popular Australian lottery made another millionaire, with one of their players scooping a prize worth $30 million. Despite their best efforts, the media couldn’t learn a great deal about his identity and lottery officials said that the lucky winner chose not to disclose any personal information. All that is known about him is the fact that history player is around 60 years old, and has some very interesting plans, now that he has joined the select club of millionaires.

Quitting a job is not the priority

The first thing on any lottery player’s mind, and all those who purchase tickets hoping that one day they might strike it lucky, is to quit their job as soon as they cash in their price. In fact, there are many more who resort to this action well before they see a penny, because they can’t stand the idea of going to work when they are sitting on a heap of money. The media made an educated guess when assuming that the Melbourne resident will enjoy a peaceful and untimely retirement, but this is not what he has in mind.

The winner confessed that there is a good chance for him to quit a job in a not so distant future, but this is not the main priority. He says that his colleagues are diligently working on an important project and given the fact that the deadlines are looming and there is plenty of work to be done, he won’t leave them in the lurch. Basically, he will keep going to work until the imminent obstacles are surpassed and then contemplate retirement. It is uncertain what kind of activity is so important that would determine a lottery winner to keep going to work, but it is certainly something meaningful.

Taking it one step at a time

There are plenty of things that can be done with $30 million, but the first on the list is the total elimination of the mortgage. The winner said that this issue kept lingering in his mind, and that’s why he sees the obliteration of the mortgage as of utmost importance. Once he will get the monkey off his back, he will have plenty of time to visit other countries and fascinating places worldwide. The winner describes himself as a keen traveler and said that as soon as the mortgage is paid and the work assignments are all successfully completed, he will book some trips overseas.

Among his plans is the acquisition of apartments all over the world, at least in those places that he intends to visit. Assuming that it is worth spending longer periods of time in these areas, it makes perfect sense to have a base of operations, instead of moving from one hotel to the other. Apartments no longer cost what they used to, and even if they did, $30 million would easily cover all that.

Winning the lottery jackpot should be a reason for joy and unbridled enthusiasm, but unfortunately for Urooj Khan and his family, this only brought misfortune. The winner was found dead the day after claiming the prize and the investigators determined that he was the victim of cyanide poisoning. While the criminal investigation is ongoing, the surviving relatives are involved in a bitter fight for his estate. The family was torn apart by his death and relatives accuse each other of being behind his murder, while fighting a battle on many fronts to get a slice of his $2 million assets.

The absence of a will further aggravate matter

Urooj Khan died one night after having dinner with his family and he didn’t leave a will, therefore making it very difficult for the surviving heirs to receive his assets. His sister filed an emergency motion that led to the freezing of her brother’s business assets and the new hearing will be held next month. It looks like the deceased had signed a deal with his partner a few weeks before passing away, and under this deal half of his venture would go to his widow.

The conflict between the widow and his sister is reignited and the letter claims that the validity of the contract is null, given the fact that no witnesses were present when the deal was signed. Accusations galore has torn the family apart and everyone is suspicious about the intentions of those who are now rivals. His sister went as far as to accuse the widow of intending to keep the lottery profits to herself instead of sharing it with Khan’s daughter. With Ansari trying to prove her sole ownership of their home, it looks like some of the claims made by the sister could be at least partially true.

The police continues the investigation

Why the family is busy fighting for his assets and estate, the investigators diligently work on determining who killed the lottery winner one year ago. It is certain that he was poisoned by cyanide and the sister of the deceased was the one to raise the alarm flags, suggesting that the wife might be the one responsible. She was questioned by the detectives but denied any implication in the tragedy and was not accused of any crime.

The authorities said that they have no intention of letting go what is a pending homicide investigation and are confident that in the end the truth will surface. Ever since concerns were raised about the lottery winner’s death, new evidence was found and the authorities even resorted to exhumation in an attempt of shedding more light on this case. Unfortunately the body was so badly decomposed that the medical examiner found nothing useful and the police would have to use whatever evidence it previously collected.

Every now and then, lottery players hear about one of their peers who won a sizable amount and after squandering every single penny had to return to work. Fortunately for Gillian Bayford this is not the case, as the lucky winner who won £148 million in the EuroMillions last year chose to return to work rather than being forced. Most of those who follow this path after winning the lottery jackpot, don’t do it for the money, but simply because they think that their actions can make a positive impact in their community.

It’s all for the Haverhill kids

The project that Gillian plans to become a part of is a play barn business which was recently shut down in Haverhill and that the winners plan on reopening. Given the fact that money is not of the essence, it shouldn’t be long before the center will welcome kids from the town and neighboring villages. Right now, there is nothing fun or exciting for them to do but Adrian and Gillian Bayford plan to change all that. The two of them used to take their own kids to the center, but since organizing birthday parties here was expensive, parents had to save money even when times were tough.

The two of them totally agree that this project will give them a lot of personal satisfaction, even though as a business it won’t generate any profits. The fact that Gillian intends to work there as well, can be easily explained as the former lottery winner wants to keep a close eye on this project. She knows how the center used to operate in the past and is the best suitable person for improving the conditions, for the benefits of those kids who will have a lot of fun there.

Lottery winners remain grounded despite huge fortune

There are very few major investments that the two winners made after scooping the EuroMillions jackpot and firmly at the top of the list stands a £6 million Downton Abbey-style mansion. The figures are intimidating, but statistics show that the overwhelming majority of lottery winners move into a bigger home first and foremost. Since this particular investment represents less than 5% of what they won, it is only fair to assume that it didn’t make a big impact on their lifestyle.

Adrian was the first to return to work, but unfortunately for him he had to shut down his music store, due to the fact that people were camping outside asking for money. This is a sensitive issue with all lottery winners and the Bayford couple is no exception, as they still receive dozens of letters every day. They said that after all this time they still read the letters but only respond to a fraction of them, without being upset in any way.

Some ancient words of wisdom say that a good neighbor is closer to you than a distant brother and three people from Port Talbot could serve as the ideal example. The three of them share more than a neighborhood, as they are all enthusiastic about the prospect of playing the lottery. It comes as no surprise that they chose to set up a tiny lottery syndicate and pool money together for purchasing tickets. What is both surprising and inspiring is that they finally won the jackpot in a very different manner.

The People’s Postcode Lottery latest millionaire

Among all lotteries with interesting and somehow strange names, the People’s Postcode Lottery stands out from the crowd. It took the game organizers many years to establish trust in communities throughout the UK, but the lottery is finally regarded as one of the most trustworthy nationwide. Over the Internet, scam artists are launching a relentless campaign of tricking naïve lottery players by inviting them to play bogus lotteries that have strangely similar names. Others go a step further and use deceit to lure potential victims into traps and the People’s Postcode Lottery is the collateral victim as its reputation is hurt.

In this particular case, the winners are real people who signed up for the lottery games and paid the monthly fee, which proved to be an inspired decision. The three neighbors will split a prize of £1million with Peter “Brummie” Summers aged 53 winning half of the amount. Two of his neighbors who go by the name of Jeff Davies and Sarah Edwards will equally divide the remaining prize, an amount that is generous enough to turn this summer holiday into the best of their life.

Money makes things so much easier

A Birmingham native, Mr. Summers told the media that the recently won jackpot won’t change his life but will make things much easier. There are so many things that money can improve and one of the dream vacations to India that the family planned for years is now within their grasp. Add to this the fact that they have an upcoming birthday to celebrate, and it becomes obvious that with half of 1,000,000 pounds in their pocket this would be one to remember. Sarah Edwards is equally thrilled to have won the lottery, especially after playing for many years without scooping any important prize.

Pam’s 50th birthday will be properly celebrated and given the fact that so many people in the same neighborhood want a prize, everyone will be glad to join them. The subscription lottery made the three neighbors slightly richer and definitely more relaxed about the foreseeable future. The prize is large enough to help them completely ignore all petty financial concerns that kept them awake at night. In addition to the three major winners, more than 300 other people from the same town won amounts ranging from slightly above £700 to over £8000.

More often than we might think, someone’s misfortune is someone else’s good luck and to some extent this applies to lottery players as well. In the UK, this weekend is a special one for those who play the lottery frequently, as two of the most popular games have the jackpots rolled over. It all began on Friday when the EuroMillions game jackpot increased to almost £32 million after nobody was capable of predicting the winning numbers in the previous draws. The next big thing happened on Saturday when the Lotto game had its main prize increased to around £6 million.

The best incentive to keep on playing

There are two things that lottery players look for when checking their numbers against the winning ones, as they want to determine whether they want anything and see if someone else scoops the jackpot. For many of them, the fact that nobody was lucky enough to win the jackpot has the power to offset the initial disappointment. It is also an excellent incentive to keep purchasing tickets, and in most cases winners increase the number of lottery slips they acquire in the wake of the major draw.

As lottery games go, the EuroMillions is one that stands out from the crowd due to its above average jackpots and that’s why an amount of £32 million is not regarded as a blockbuster. Nevertheless, the idea of winning twice as much as expected in a regular draw provides players with the impetus to persevere regardless of how unlucky they were in the past. The Lotto game on the other hand offers an amount that only mildly exceeds 6 million, but this is three times higher the average, therefore this is the kind of opportunity that frequent players can’t afford to miss.

Players came painfully close in previous draws

Those who go out of their way to check out the statistics are surely aware of the fact that in the previous draw six players matched five numbers in the Lotto game. 09, 11, 16, 17, 18 and 38 were the Lotto results with the Bonus Ball being 47 and the six players who matched five from the main pool and the bonus one had to settle for an amount of almost 100,000 pounds. 244 players won a consolation prize worth £1,452, while more than 50,000 had to settle for an amount that barely covered their expenses.

In addition to these two jackpots that have been rolled over in the EuroMillions and Lotto games, UK lottery players should know that nobody scooped the jackpot in the Health Lottery and Thunderball. This means that the final week of April has the potential of turning into a very profitable one for British lottery enthusiasts. In case nobody is inspired enough to choose the right numbers, the next week will see the jackpots boosted even further.
