All cloth diapering related posts are welcome, but here are some ideas to get you started:

1- What was your first cloth diaper? Our first diapers were gDiapers and Gerber Pre-folds.

2- What is your favorite cloth diaper? To this day, my favorite everyday diaper is a gDiaper with a Gerber pre-fold. I guess I'm the odd man out loving the Gerber, but seriously- nothing is holding more than that combo! I used BG's on Judah when he was a newborn and had terrible leaking problems. I have a small assortment of other fluff, different covers, a few Smartipants and Fuzzibunz...nothing beats my g's!

3- What does your ideal stash look like (and how many kids are you diapering)? Maybe a few more g's to replace the few that are looking a bit rough. I also like an AIO to get through doctors appointments. I've got 2 year old twins who may not potty train for a bit longer and a 7 month old. They are sometimes in cloth all day but mostly part-time due to having to wear disposables at school. I think we limp along pretty well for having three in diapers though.

Wishlist Wednesday

I've got beds on my mind. Mostly because we co-sleep and Judah is totally cramping my style! I don't really want to add another crib to the mix though. I'd much rather take away a crib, add some big boy beds and get us a bigger bed where we can sprawl out to our hearts content!

First, we need beds for the boys. I have been in love with this one from Ana White since I saw it last summer. Anyone want to build it for me?

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; I'm a machine I tell you.
- Took a nap with Judah while the boys napped. It was a great afternoon at my house.

It's so crazy how absolutely crappy I feel when pregnant and how fast that goes away after delivery. The goal was 8lbs even. We just wanted to see a new number on the scale. We missed it by half an ounce, I had to laugh. This kid isn't doing anything unless he wants to I guess. So we leave with a new goal- 3.5 ounces by Tuesday.

Right. He's averaging one ounce every two days and you want that almost doubled? We'll see.

Saturday he decided he didn't need to eat at all for like 7 hours. Nothing. Nada. He'd rather nap thankyouverymuch. Awesome.

Sunday and Monday don't seem life altering in terms of consumption so I figure we're looking at another weight check by the end of the week. Mr. Wonderful takes Friday off so there is someone lined up to watch the boys. We're pretty convinced this is going to drag out at least another week.

Tuesday we get to our appointment and as usual he drops a bomb while we are waiting to get weighed. Not sure why he can't keep those precious ounces in until after he's off the scale, but I digress.

Finally he's on the scale and the weight registers. I look at it and am quite sure it reads 8lbs 0.5oz. Of course I think- 1 ounce, why should I be surprised. Then I look again and the nurse confirms what I'm seeing: 8lbs 5.5oz. NO EFFING WAY! Six ounces.

SIX OUNCES!

Almost double our goal. Half an ounce away from his birth weight.

The Ped comes in, tells me no more supplements. No more weight checks! I can pump when I feel like it and nurse when he's hungry.

Hallelujah!

Life just got a little bit easier.

Because after 17 days I might forget.

August 4th seemed so far away. I scheduled my C-Section really far in advance, like in February or something crazy like that. So far in advance it wasn't even on the books at the hospital for awhile. When I finally got the official paperwork from the hospital confirming surgery at 9:30am on August 4th, I was pumped. This was a Wednesday, 39 weeks, 1 day. Three weeks longer than I carried the boys, who were also born on a Wednesday. This baby was going to be delivered by the same OB who delivered the boys. I had only seen her once in my first pregnancy but really wanted her to deliver all my kids so I switched over to her this time around as well. It didn't hurt that everyone who saw my C-Section scar (or lack thereof) asked who my surgeon was- she did a nice job apparently.

As we got close to the due date I just wanted this all to be over. I was miserable. Although I'd stopped throwing up every day somewhere around 32 weeks I was still pretty nauseous for at least part of every day. Everything ached and the contractions! Oh those nasty double-you-over-but-not-making-progress contractions. I was ready to be done with those. I know it's all part of the deal but that looming date could not come soon enough! Even if I wanted to be done as soon as possible I really wanted everyone who missed the boys birth to be here, so in the back of my mind I was happy he was staying put.

So August 4th arrives! Hurrah! We practically jump out of bed. Everything is packed up, ready to go and spread out on the kitchen table. We get up the boys and have a few last photos as a family of 4 on the couch. We kiss our boys goodbye and head out the door. So different than last time. We've got one of these trips under our belts, we're practically pros!

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zEsRkT4mWI4/TG_x6NqVSdI/AAAAAAAAB2o/YNOlHMMdCSM/s1600/DSC_0012.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; Then we hit a detour and think we might be late! Check-in is at 7:30! Thanks to Mr. Wonderful's great navigation skills and ability to follow detour signs we step off the elevator with 4 minutes to spare. We must've really booked it through the hospital. We walk up to check-in and the people behind us interrupt the receptionist checking us in and ask if they can just get a room because "Can't you see she's in labor!". (Actually, she didn't look any more in labor than I did at that point...wait your turn.) I was already pre-registered so it took about 2 minutes to check-in and I was off to the MAC where I was gowned up and monitored.

I meet some of the team that will be in the room including the various nurse anesthetists and the anesthesiologist. Of course I tell everyone about my issue with not being able to swallow with my last spinal and they are all over trying to figure out a way to make sure that doesn't happen this time around.

After a bit family starts to filter in, all of a sudden I'm surrounded by everyone and it's almost go-time. We were warned early on there might be a few Moms who might have to bump me and at the last minute we are told we'll have about an hour to wait. This is a blessing. Integrated (Integrative?) Medicine comes and I got a lovely neck massage with some peppermint oil aromatherapy. Very nice way to ease into the next few hours. Not that I was overly anxious or anything, I handle these situations pretty well I think.

Then it was time to walk.

If you've ever had a planned C-Section you probably remember the walk to the OR. It's like slow motion. Then you're in this bright room, sitting on the operating table getting some very nice drugs threaded into your spine. Very surreal. (Can I just give a shout out to my anesthesiologist? The spinal was perfection! I could swallow! Also to the team he worked with- they accommodated every wave of nausea and kept me from getting sick throughout the surgery. Who knew a little tilt to the table and alcohol pads on your nose would be so helpful?)

John is sitting to my left as my OB gets down to business. There is talk of my wonderful healing abilities- I have very little scarring. I suppose it's nice to have invisible scars but why can't my super power be the ability to drink whipped cream laden coffee drinks all day without the weight gain and insomnia? I guess I'll take what I can get.

We're at the point where we're going to see some action. Well, I'm not going to see anything, but we're at the point where this kids is going to be out soon, you get the picture. She makes the final cut and just as with the boys, tons of fluid (4 liters- that's a lot!). She's trying to pull him out and I'm not sure if he's trying to climb back up or if he's just wedged in there really well, but there is all of a sudden lots of pushing down on my stomach. I kind of had to laugh because it was really weird having someone on the other side of the blue sheet pretty much putting all of their weight into pushing this baby out.

Then he was out.

The first thing I hear is something like "He's not 6 pounds." And I think, Wow! He's not even 6 pounds? He's a teeny tiny! Then I have a nurse peek over at me and say "Eleven O Five" and I think Holy crap he's ELEVEN pounds? And that's what I say. "Eleven pounds?" No, 11:05 is what time he was born.....silly drugs.

Hey there!

He had a nice noisy cry. Much louder than the puppy dog cries of his brothers. He weighed 8 pounds, 6 ounces and was 21 inches long. He has light blond hair- almost white in the front. He scored 9 and 9 on his APGAR scores, just like both Lincoln and Wyatt.

Trimming the cord.

In the recovery room he went right to rooting around- this kid wanted to eat. He latched like a pro from day one. Even as I fumbled around like a newbie trying to figure out how to hold his little body. I of course suffer from the normal side effects of anesthesia, for me anyway: throwing up, itching my face off etcetera. After an hour or so we are moved to a room (a very large room!) and we get down to the business of bonding. I have a lovely meal of Jell-O and broth and contemplate getting up to walk around. No matter how much I love the compression booties and the catheter (TMI?) I was ready to get up and be done with it.

The next few days were different than last time. After that first night I was up quite a bit more than I was last time, I didn't need much coaxing at all. It was mostly me and him at the hospital with a few hours each day were everyone seemed to show up around the same time. I got to know plenty about his personality. He's very oral. He wants something in his mouth at all times- I was so desperate for sleep one morning I called my nurse for a pacifier at 3am. Neither of the boys ever took a pacifier, no matter how hard we tried. He also likes to be really close to me and he's not fond of sleeping alone at this point. Even in the co-sleeper he's too far away. He much prefers the crook of my arm and the close proximity to his two favorite food sources.

The boys came to visit on Thursday, it went pretty much as I had expected. We let them hang out on the cool moving bed for a bit and they opened some new books from their new brother. Finally we brought the baby over to the bed. Wyatt crawled over to me and took a good look, opened his mouth wide and gave him a big sloppy kiss. He then proceeded to poke him in the eyes, mouth and nose. I sidled up next to Lincoln and he stuck out his arm ala "talk to the hand" and pushed him away, never taking his eyes off of his book. He's going to take a bit more convincing I guess. Can I just say how much I missed my boys? Ohmigod I missed my boys! And when did they get so BIG?

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zEsRkT4mWI4/TG_1EUJAf9I/AAAAAAAAB3I/Sj9-OClpe38/s1600/judah1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; His weight gain has been slow, but we're getting there. Each day the boys show a little more interest, although Lincoln is still the hold out.

So now I'm a rock-solid member of the All Boys Club.

I like it.

Would you like a cheeseburger with that?

Just when we thought everything was going great, we hit a bump in the road.

It seems that although this kid is nursing around the clock, he's not gaining weight. As in he's gained one ounce since he was discharged on Sunday. Apparently you are supposed to gain back everything you initially lose by two weeks. We've got four days to gain eight ounces. The pediatrician is none too pleased.

Of course at the appointment we are told to supplement. And only feed him every two hours, none of this "on demand" stuff we've been doing. What exactly do you suggest I do as he frantically roots around at everything he comes into contact with while I wait out those two hours? Both of these things go against everything I've learned about breastfeeding in the past 2 years. First of all, you want to feed more, not less. Second, supplementing is the downfall of nursing in my experience and I'll be damned if it all falls apart this time.

There are a few things that could be going on here that make me want to not follow doctors orders on this one. First off, his bili levels have spiked a bit. At 9 days old he's sporting a 15 from the serum test- that's the highest a serum has come back so far. Why they didn't throw him under the lights while we were in the hospital is beyond me (especially knowing what we went through with Lincoln who didn't spike until we went to discharge). I would have happily done that but they took a more wait and see approach. Wait and see translates to no lights and a baby who has issues with nursing. Now I have a sleepy baby who's probably not using his excellent latch to the best of his ability simply because he's sleeping through his feedings- nothing wakes this kid up. The other thing is he's at the point (days 7-10) where he could just be cluster feeding. The lack of weight gain could again be contributed to an inefficient milk transfer due to the fact that he's sleeping through his feedings.

Throw in the crazy post-partum hormones and I am obviously not dealing with this very well.

When the on-call ped called with the bili results last night I told him I wasn't on board with supplementing. It's about all I could spit out without breaking into a full-on ugly cry. I can barely type the words without breaking down (fuck). He said they are most interested in finding out if he's getting enough. If he nurses like he is and can't/ won't take much from a supplement, that would show he's getting enough and just gaining slowly. If on the other hand nurses like he is and then takes another ounce or two, well, maybe we need to add in the supplement.

That makes sense, I can understand that. Still not on board, but willing to see what we're dealing with here. I thawed out the syringes of colostrum I pumped in the hospital (15ml) and pumped immediately following a 30 minute nursing session (2.5 ounces). He took the colostrum and a little over half an ounce- with a dropper, no bottle shall touch those tiny lips until I go back to work. That doesn't seem like a lot to me, but we'll see. Since then he's been sleeping pretty much around the clock- we have to wake him up to eat. Not sure if I like this, it seems like he's getting less this way. We'll probably end up supplementing more tonight simply because I KNOW he's not eating enough now. After four days spent in a hospital room pretty much just me and a newborn it's been an interesting transition to being at home. Of course, all I want to do is love on my boys. I'd be happy to sit on the couch and cuddle but they aren't having it. Other than the initial excitement to see me and the inspection of this new baby thing everyone has been talking about so much, they were ready to go back to their routine.

It's different bringing home a baby for the second time. Last time we got home and every move we made revolved around the boys. This time we got home and I put him in his bed and we went on with the evening. I unpacked my bags and put away gifts, he slept. He woke up, I fed him and changed him, then he went back to sleep. There is no wondering if we are doing the right thing, we just know what to do. He fits right into our life and I like it.

The first few nights he was a great sleeper- we were able to sleep between 1am and 3am, then 3:30 and 7am no problem. I can live with that. Since then it's been a cluster feeding party all day and all night, save for the 3 hour nap/ reprieve I got today. I'm hoping his weight check tomorrow reveals a weight gain so I can stop worrying about improper latch and all the multitude of breastfeeding issues. Because frankly, this kid is a champion nurser and I am not seeing any issues.

He's 8 days old and I think we'll keep him.

Judah Michael

<img style="WIDTH: 320px; He is a very handsome boy who came in at 8lbs 6oz and 21 inches long. Mom and he are both doing very well although Mom is very tired due to Judah being much more interested in nursing than his brothers were. We could not be happier. It was just as exciting as when we had the boys. I cannot wait to watch this little man and his brothers grow up.

He did meet his brothers yesterday and reactions were mixed. Wyatt gave him a big kiss and was very interested in him. He wanted to touch the baby's eyes and Wyatt even made a fist and pushed it against Judah's face (I am sure in the future he will be much less gentle with this). Lincoln didn't want anything to do with his baby brother. He just pushed him away and was content to foucs on his goodnight gorilla book (it needs to be mentioned, that this is a book Judah "bought" for his older brother to grease the wheels so to speak).

Also want to let my wife know she did a great job bringing this baby into the world and a great job bring our older sons into the world and I love her so much.

My Little Men.

I was really dragging my feet on cutting the boys hair. Months ago I said that I *might* get their haircut in August before the baby came. I *might* have my sister, super stylist that she is, cut off those little curls. As we got closer to August I hemmed and hawed, I just couldn't part with my little boys. That baby hair was the one thing standing between being my babies and being BIG boys. It was a tough call.

Yesterday we bit the bullet. Both boys are now professionally coiffed and looking good. Of course my camera had a dead battery when we went to take pics so I used my sisters. Lincoln sat pretty well (we had her cut during dinner so they were plenty distracted). Wyatt had already finished his dinner, and dessert, and proceeded to chew through 2 suckers during his cut. He was the tougher of the two cuts. He wasn't excited about having someone touching his head and his hair and just wanted to be done. Thankfully his cut wasn't as involved.

We decided beforehand that they needed to have distinct cuts. apparently no one can tell them apart so we thought we would do everyone a favor. Lincoln, being the cool cat that he is got a little punked out do. Wyatt, because no matter what we do to his hair it ALWAYS goes back to the same style, got a basic boys cut. I'm pretty happy with how they turned out. The pictures don't do the event justice, it's tough to get them to hold still for a second these days so everything is a blur.

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; We'll see what they look like after I deliver.

We're counting down until Wednesday- this little guy is staying put until then. At least we hope he's staying put and not going to make an early entrance like his brothers!

Question of the Week!

How do you feel about CIO (Cry-it-Out)?

A little background: I work overnights so Mr. Wonderful was home with the boys all night by himself. At 13 months they still were not sleeping more than 1-2 hours at a stretch, as soon as one would go down, the other one would wake up. They would go down around 10 or 11 and be up by 5am for the day. They would not sleep unless they were bounced /rocked asleep. Every time they woke up they got a bottle of milk. This was obviously not working for anyone. The boys didn't sleep or nap. Mr. Wonderful didn't sleep. I was bombarded every morning with a bad report on the night before and I was feeling a bit helpless because, well, I wasn't there and there was nothing I could do about it.
Did you use this method for sleep training?
Yes. Once we decided we were going to give it a try we surveyed our Facebook friends on any tips going into it and just went for it. We figured it would be a pretty long drawn out process but by the second day it was much better and by the end of the first week we were pretty much on a 10 hour sleep schedule. Mr. Wonderful did try and put a stop to it after day 1 but I insisted we push through. Day 2 was so much easier. By the middle of the week we'd put them in their cribs and they'd lay right down. Here is a glimpse of week one of CIO at our house.
How well did/do your multiples sleep?
Before CIO they were horrible sleepers. Now we get 11-12 hours a night plus a 2-3 hour nap around 3 hours after they get up in the morning. It's amazing.

Do you think you are/were more likely to allow a child to CIO because he/she is a multiple?
No, I think we just got to the point where we needed to try SOMETHING and it didn't really matter that there were two of them. It just so happened that the first thing we tried (CIO) was the thing that worked. If the new baby isn't sleeping through the night by 6 months we'll be looking to get him on a schedule ASAP- we will not be limping along on 1-2 hours of sleep at 13 months like last time. That said we'll be co-sleeping so it'll be a whole new ballgame where sleep is concerned.

What instances do you think it is appropriate, or inappropriate to allow a child to CIO?
I wouldn't let an infant under 6 months CIO and I probably wouldn't let an infant with known medical issues CIO. It's not like you let them scream for hours- 10-15 minutes at the most and usually less than that was our experience. We also never really had the total melt-down crying so that probably made it a bit easier on us. I think when you get to a year and you are still not sleeping, you need to try something and sometimes that may seem drastic and it may be out of your comfort zone, but you might be surprised. You might have one bad night and then have bad habits fall by the wayside. You never know.

Introducing Hazel and Charlotte!*

Alternately titled: We dressed the boys up like girls today!

It wasn't really intentional- Jenna wrapped on of her sarongs around Lincoln and he looked so precious we thought Wyatt needed one too.
