Here’s a montage of the videos we did over the previous weekends. Those for Det, Arman and Mcdo are taken using our Intex IT-310 WC Webcam. The one for Jemie was taken using Det’s Iphone 4. This is really a fun game to play as a group. Just boot up, kill the lights, pop some beers and scream away!

We’ve seen how indie films work..we’ve seen how minimalist approaches to movie productions can elicit emotions that can equal, nay surpass those that big budget flicks can inspire – think Blair Witch Project. In my book, the title itself wields the power to amplify the primal fear inspired by the unknown. In this movie, there are no zombies, monsters or any other overtly paranormal or demonic entities. 95% of the fear comes from one’s perception/interpretation of the subtle stimuli they receive from “first hand” video footage of a “lost” expedition. The other 5% comes from the viewers’ preconceived bias and stereotypes that, say, a sudden turn or a sudden change in music portends a scary scene or two. In all its simplicity and small budget glory, BWP succeeds in what it hoped to achieve-to scare the heck out of its viewers and to earn big bucks.

This brings us to the real topic of this post-an indie game called SLENDER. Released last June 2012 and free to download and play for everyone, you can already see shitloads of reaction videos on youtube. Everything about this game is minimalist..from the controls to the objective–all the way down to the set and the title character himself. There are no weapons to use (just a flimsy little flashlight to light the way throughout the forest), no multiple lives, no maps and absolutely no PAUSE button. Your aim is to get all 8 ink notes scattered across 10 landmarks within the fenced in forest. What little sound (no music here) you have only serves to scare the shit out of you as you get chased around by a slender, faceless humanoid. You’d definitely know he’s near you because the screen will start getting white noise all over–this your cue to start running like hell–until the signal normalizes, allowing you to collect all 8 notes. I first played this earlier today, half past noon with the lights on and my eldest sis watching but i ended up screaming like a girl. Heck! This IS the heart of fear in its purest form — as IGN would put it. I DARE you, dear reader to play this alone with the lights off and your headset on. Your reaction will be totally priceless:)

Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fungus…

Been away from WP so long I feel like a grade school child stepping into the wrong classroom again, unfamiliar faces, glowering teacher and all.

In the last few months that I’ve been away, a lot of things happened: Kabayan Anthony Quilon held the first ever Quilon’s Quiz Cup in the Philippines last January, My son Sage Ezequiel was born last March 2, The 3rd World Quiz Championship in the Philippines was held in Murphy’s last June and I was among the 6 selected to move up the corporate ladder with a frontline management/supervisory post last July. Bit of a run-on sentence there but whatever, I’m too lazy to do some self grammar-policing today. It’s my rest day, it’s a payday and I just came off a great drinking binge last night @ Central near Pasong Tamo. I got soused pretty good, but some members of my team had it better: Chris, for one, stood inside the CR facing the lavatory mirror for about an hour and a half, holding a roll tissue on his left hand while waiting for the next wave of nausea to scrape his esophagus and stomach clean. Also, good pal Paula was so pickled she had to be fetched from KFC by Mark, her bf of 10 years now. Before the night ended, Mike showed us his vintage form in siding up to ladies and getting their names/numbers even if they have someone with them. That’s a whole different level of social savvy I can only DREAM about

Of course with every drinking sesh comes good music, lots of shouting, laughter and skeletons tumbling out of the closet. I’d say I had a healthy dose of all that last night. The catalyst really was the funny colored liquor mix we were shooting that was touted to give me colored poo the next day. Well except for bluish lips which my wife noticed when I arrived last night, I did not notice anything else colored green or blue coming out of my body. Thankfully.

Jake was the surprise of the night. He came a tad late but after opening with a bot of light beer, he gamely consumed the crazy-colored cocktails-in shot glasses with us before capping the night with a last bucket of SMB Lite. He was nowhere near the Jake I was told who gets drunk easily.

The discussions about the team and our future plans was somewhat an eye-opener. I really got to appreciate every member of my team whether they were there or not. Jeno gave an eloquent analysis of the team’s dynamics and I really appreciated his insights. Incidentally, Jeno is just 12 hours younger than me. And eerily enough, we share so much in common we could’ve as well been separated at birth. Too bad he’s gonna be leaving us soon to pursue his ultimate career goal. All the best man.

There’s more stories to tell but it’s payday time…time to draw up that grocery list again!
