Day 5: What Memories do you Cherish?

On a normal day, I would tell you all about my cherished memories. I mean, this is a blog about creative writing, right? But, I endured something a few years ago that took part of my memory. I was diagnosed with epilepsy as a preteen. Around my 20th birthday, I had multiple seizures which really affected my memory. Well, I'm sure you can imaging banging your head on the floor does nothing for your brain cell development. Even though I don't recall memories before the age of 15, I still remember how I felt when looking at a specific photographs. So, I'm going to share some photographic memories with you.

It all began when two people fell in love... too cliche? This is my parents engagement photo. You're wondering how in the world I could recall this because I wasn't even born yet. Well, I find extreme comfort in this photo for some reason. When I look at it, I feel as though my life began in that moment. I feel like I remember the pre-mortal existence, my brothers gathering, getting ready to be a family. It sounds totally cheesy, I know, but it's true.

Guess what? I'm the baby! I know, so cute. I chuckle every time I see this photo. This photograph represented our family as complete and whole. I don't recall many memories of my brothers, but I do remember how much they loved me. Always, they had my mothers, fathers, and my, best interests at heart. I find comfort in knowing that these goofballs will always be my family.

I do remember this picture being taken on a trip to Nauvoo. This vacation is one of the only memories I have of my Grandma Walker. She died when I was seven of cancer. Even though she is not pictured, I see her in Christ. Though I don't remember her as a person, I remember her spirit. Her spirit was warm, inviting, and clearly memorable.

This is my brother and I playing in the irrigation water on the farm in Idaho. I treasure that place dearly. It's the only home that I remember. Probably because I was raised in that home. Isn't it interesting how our hearts attach themselves to places we otherwise would not.

Yes, this is exactly what it looks like. I am wearing pantyhose on my head while my father and brothers stuff them with balloons. If I'm not mistaken I believe this was at a family Christmas party. I don't remember much of family gatherings before 2005, but I do remember the feeling; complete happiness. There was always laughter, togetherness, wholesomeness, and love. I guess that's what memories are really for, to remind us of the good things worth fighting for. Memories are only moments, but it's the moments we choose to hang on to that determine our fate.

This is a photograph of Grandpa and Grandma Clegg. They are both deceased but their spirits remain strong in my heart. My grandmother was such a virtuous and kind woman. I remember her always having butterscotch cookies when we came to visit. She always insisted that grandchildren should be self-entertained. *chuckle* Well, she knew how the process worked very well. She made play-dough, read books, and played checkers with her grandchildren. What a delightful woman. Unfortunately I don't have many memories of my Grandpa Clegg. But I do remember that he used to sit me on his lap and sing "There was an old lady who swallowed a fly" with me. I really miss them. Entering their home was like entering a place of holiness. Just clean, eternal, and light.

This is my Grandpa Walker. He also is deceased but remains humorous to my heart. Fortunately I do have vivid, fond memories of him. He used to take me to a camp ground hidden in a golf course called Aspen Acres (Where he is pictured, actually). Grandpa always had that smirk on his face like he knew you were up to something but loved you anyways. Bless his heart. I miss going to his house and watching Judge Joe Brown. He'd scold the the television while we shared a plate of cheese and crackers. I could go on, but I won't stop. I'll have to dedicate some posts to specific memories.

And here my parents are again. I find it appropriate to begin and end with them. They are the reason I have memories in the first place. Because of them I will always have warmth and love in my heart. Because of their life on earth, I will always understand Christ's love for His children. Gosh, I just love those two. They make my heart smile.

Isn't it interesting that we retain so many memories and yet the ones that we remain so fond of concern our family. That's what is it all about guys; family. Without it, there is no purpose to a life existing beyond this one. Without the family, there can be no understanding of true love, sacrifice, and virtue. Even though I don't have vivid memories, I will always have these photographs to remind my soul how important my family was and is to me.

Day 4: What is Your Most Prized Possession?

Honestly, this was not hard for me at all. I knew what my most prized possession was the moment I read the challenge; my writing folder. Since I was young, I have had a fascination with the written word. Honestly, there is no specific genre or technique I prefer above others. All writing enlightens, encourages, and astounds me.

I remember as a child that I kept several journals. One for my health journey concerning hemophilia and epilepsy, one for my favorite quotes, one for my poetry, and others for history sake. By the time I reached high school I had a memory box full of written materials. All of which are still with me today. I thought you would appreciate a picture of my folder instead of my boxes of paper with scribbles.

The folder that you see in the picture contains my latest treasures; some poems, unsent letters, songs, story starters, and magazine submissions. It is my security blanket. Jason, my life partner, told me that it is the only thing I carry with me everywhere. It wasn't until he pointed it out that it's true. I will not leave it at home alone, it must always be with me. Whether I'm at the store, on vacation, or the doctors, my writing folder is always by my side.

It may sound silly but it's more than secrets and unidentified works. It's my history, my genealogy, and my life. If you're wondering about the art, yes, I drew it. I kept having a recurring dream showing that exact image. I felt the need to draw it immediately. The image reminds that when I am influenced by the power of words I must write them down as soon as possible. This reminder has served me well.

MacGregor Family Crest: Royal is Our Blood

Thanks to my parents, I am infatuated with my genealogy and ancestry. My family comes from the Highlands of Scotland. I guess it would explain my obsession with Celtic music, Druidry, study of the elements, etc. But there is one Scottish element in particular that I find fascinating; the story of Robert Roy MacGregor, my ancestor.

History

My ancestors, the MacGregors, were one of the most famous victims of the Campbell's Clan expansionism. The Campbell's were granted my families land for no good reason that I can find. Selection, I suppose, by the Duke. From what I understand, people hated my ancestors, treating them like garbage for their humanity. At the time, mid 1200's, the world was changing politically, and my ancestors believed in peace, equality.

After a series of incidents my entire family was outlawed in 1603. Shortly after a victory battle between the MacGregors and the Campbells, King James VI outlawed my family from the Highlands. Saying that their name was to be abolished and those born to it were to renounce the name or face death. Really?

During this time of persecution, my ancestor, Rob Roy, also known as Red MacGregor for his deep red hair, was the famous Scottish folk hero of the 18th century; best known as the Scottish Robin Hood. Roy fought in the Battle of Glen Shiel in 1719 and was badly wounded He spent most of his later life waging a feud against James Graham, 1st duke of Montrose, who succeeded in entangling Roy in debt that ruined him.

What I Admire

I could go on and on about my family history and how I envy their ability to move forward while continuing to fight for what they believed was right. I find it interesting that the MacGregor Clan titled themselves "Royal is my Blood." This could be because they were descendants of the first King of Scotland. It could also explain the condition, Hemophilia, which is apparent in my family. Maybe it is their example of humility that they consider themselves royal.

What I do know for sure is that my ancestors always questioned the Capitol. They refused to conform just because it was law. For years they were overthrown by greedy individuals unable to take care of themselves. Forcing my ancestors into a statement of slavery.

Rob Roy is a hero to me. Some people dispute his actions as the Scottish Robin Hood. But you will notice that it is only families of entitlement who dispute this. My ancestors saw major uprising flaws in the system and took matters into their own hands. Because of their heroic acts, Scotland is now a peaceful land. Poor, but humble. I look at the government today and see the fear in the public's eyes. The willingness to conform for monetary value, including higher taxes. Do you see a pattern here?

If I've learned anything from my ancestors it's that I should never give up because the Capitol puts road blocks in my way. I am poor, consider myself humble, and refuse to give in to conformity. No, I'm not going to start robbing the government to give to the poor. But I think it is time that I start robbing them of their right to decide what is best for me.

The government has no right to decide who deserves medical assistance, home ownership, financial aid, etc. Why? Because they entitle it to themselves and their descendants. But, my ancestors reminded of the importance to continue to do what's right by the land and my God; but I shall never stop fighting for what is truly right. I've noticed one thing in my family that correlates with our genealogical roots. We will continue to keep peace where it is valued, but you will NEVER silence us.

I love my family. They have my best interests at heart and love me as I am while helping me be all I can be. They are courageous enough to hold me accountable and to ask the right questions, as well as being wise enough to trust their heart in asking questions they know need asked.

Today, I discovered that questions are such a powerful tool for effecting change. They force you to look inside yourself concerning what you truly feel; sometimes you find the instinctive answer that has truth to it.

Today, my mother and I had one of our "seminars" and I was surprised to hear her ask some of the questions she had. Even though I couldn't answer her questions right away, I knew I needed to answer them eventually for my sake. On the drive home I contemplated our discussion on eternal happiness and surrender. For a brief moment I almost avoided this post. I knew I needed to answer my mothers questions; but knowing isn't doing. Typically, I would have avoided them. But my mother has taught me that what you resist, persists. I just realized that my life pattern likes to avoid what is better for my spirit.

So, I sit here with my laptop exploring the questions my mother and I debated over. I tend to over exaggerate and look for the humanistic truth. But mortal answers do not nurture my spirit. Now, I understand what nurturing means to me and how to do it; to achieve happiness.

I believe that happiness is a balance of body, mind, and spirit. In the last couple of years I have nourished my mind through hundreds, if not thousands of books on a huge variety of subjects, searching for truth. But I have neglected to consider the nourishment I place in my spirit. When we nourish our spirits with truthful happiness, we surrender to our higher power by faith. But when we nourish our spirits with darkness, we surrender to questions and curiosities that should be left alone.

My mother shared a testimony of her happiness with me today. It was at that moment that I realized how silly I was for making happiness more complex than it truly is. Happiness is so simple. Happiness is faith, hope, charity, and love. It is nothing more, it is nothing less.

Yesterday I would have told you that my secret to happiness was seeking for truth. But, today I can proudly tell you that I find happiness in accepting what I believe to be true and living by it. No question, no hesitation. Just by admitting that to you, I feel lighter than I did just moments ago. I feel nurtured, peaceful, content, and happy.

Day 1: Branding Yourself as A Writer

Branding is not subjective to models and marketing companies. It is very important to brand yourself as a person, no matter your career choice. For writers, however, it is even more important to refer to a particular word that inspires you. This word is your brand. It is the word you live by, the word you showcase in your work.

What is Your Brand?

Think about the work you've accomplished in the past and what you hope to accomplish in the future? Clearly, you have specific genres that you prefer to write about. What are they? Romance? Science Fiction? Historical? By taking all of the elements that interest you, you're better able to find a single word that describes you.

Branding Examples

Tyra Banks: We've all seen an episode (or 50) of Americas Next Top Model. What is that word Tyra uses to describe herself? Fierce! And she brings it. She surprises the modeling industry by always doing something unexpected, but she composes herself in a fierce manner.

Ellen Degeneres: All of the world knows Ellen by her unfathomable humility and generosity. Though she will never admit it herself, she is humble. Hilarious, yet humble.

Stephen King: Stephen King actually spoke about branding himself as an author. He utilizes the dream realm to encompass his next best seller. Giving him an unexpected brand name; Predictable. But it's his brand, and we still eat up every word he writes.

I Am Creative

After careful consideration and polling a few friends and family members, I came to the conclusion that my brand name is creative. My readers expect unusual topics and interesting ideas from me. I didn't realize how much people around me relied on my creativity. So, for the future, I will always encompass the word creative around my work.

How will I go about doing this? Well, I begin by utilizing my word while writing. If it's been said and done before, I'm not being creative enough. If my audience doesn't feel as though I'm being creative in my work, than I'm not doing my job as a brand name.

Who Are You?

Now, the question lays with you; who are you? What is your brand name? It's more than just choosing a word that describes you. It is choosing a word that you can commit to. Are you dependable? Vivacious? Wicked? What? Who are you?

You will discover that branding yourself is the most difficult task as a writer. But the benefits of it keep you consistent in your work. If I submit my next book for publication and I am told is wasn't creative enough, then I've let myself down.

Whoever you are, whatever your brand may be, stick to it. Completely surrender to your brand name. Just because someone else is known for your word doesn't mean you can't claim that title. Embrace who you are and show your brand in every single word that you write.

30 Day Writing Challenge: Part 1

Well, I haven't seen much interest in the writing challenge for June. I know of a few people are going to make this commitment with me and I am grateful for your support. If it makes you feel better, I don't really know what I am doing.

Midst publishing my first short story, I realized that a true work of art for writers lies in what we know; our faults, accomplishments, and sincerest memories. During the course of June, I/we will be exploring our inner selves, learning how to make a name for ourselves.

We will begin with branding as our first assignment, moving towards more personal and enveloped meanings of ourselves. I've compiled the list below so you can get your gears grinding. The purpose of this exercise is to develop who we are as writers. Good luck, and have fun!

The Hunger Games: What I Learned

Finally, I had the opportune chance to read the trilogy and watch the famed movie; The Hunger Games. Let me tell you something about this story, it is not a game, nor is it too far from the truth. You must have realized this while watching the movie. The story is very real and the symbolism to today's controversy is uncanny. It is the first movie that has made me cry in months. Okay, that's a lie because I'm made of blubbering material.

Usually, when I watch a movie I can clearly point out the lessons learned. For some reason, this one took me a while. I didn't understand the message from reading the books alone. But when I saw the adaptation, it became so apparent that the lessons are simple.

1. Fight the good fight

The first insight that sparked fury and peace inside of me was the fact that it is possible to fight against the Capitol. No mortal man or woman is morally obligated to abide by Capitol law. The constitution of the United States of America is undoubtedly a peace treaty between the government and public. Need a reminder?

I pledge allegiance to the flag

of the United States of America.

And to the Republic, for which it stands.

One nation, under God, indivisible;

with liberty and justice for all.

(E.g. I used the pledge of allegiance because I am an American Citizen and believe in the justice and mercy of the U.S. constitution. No offense is intended.)

If you don't believe there is relation to the Constitution and Katniss, then we read two completely different stories. The point is, you do have a moral obligation to keep tranquility and establish true justice. Don't be afraid to fight against the Capitol. You may be surprised who is watching your back.

2. Mercy cannot exist without justice

As we saw on film, the Capitol is perfectly willing to sacrifice children to prove their point and punish the Districts. Playing on the sympathies of the citizens of the Capitol works. Why does it work? Because the Districts were forced into a position of peace-keeping; forcibly risking their own lives for the sake of justice. Really?

Do you realize how the American Capitol watches you and feeds on your willingness to share your darkest secrets? Do you understand that mercy does not prevail when a corrupt government operates for the sake of their own? We are like fish out of water, we just don't realize we can't breath anymore.

3. It's time to change

There is a reason that everyone related to this story so clearly. We all see the potential our world has, yet we refuse to act on it because of fear. Well, stop it. The author is trying to tell us that if we do not change our inhumane ways (war, pollution, destruction, discrimination, torturing others, etc.), we will be destroyed.

I don't know if I will see the fall of our country or the final battles prophesied through time. But I do know that we are reaching the thin line of humanity and inhumanity and will eventually be erased. Katniss speaks of this quite frequently. The Hunger Games show the barbaric ways of the future human population. So the question is, what are you going to do to change that?

Take caution, use your strengths. Remember, a testimony of truth is not just a religious concept. It is a testament of beliefs concerning you. What do you believe in? Don't believe in something because it's justified or makes you angry. Believe in something because it brings you peace. Just like your hero, Katniss.

How to Basics of Creating a Writing Porfolio

The online media is taking the world by storm. Freelancers are now the desired choice for marketing firms, legal firms, and many other businesses. As a writer, it is extremely important that you keep an updated portfolio to show on your social media sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook, etc. It is time for you to take the next step and get paid for what you love to do. Don't hesitate, it's necessary and not as difficult as you may think.

P.S. I will be making one in the near future and I'll post photos and videos on how I did it. I am going to create step-by-step posts on creating an online portfolio as well.

1. Categorize Work

The beginning stage to creating a portfolio is categorizing your work. Go through every memory box and folder on your computer. Compile a list of websites you have written for, even if your own. You should categorize your work into several key components.

This is an example of my outlined portfolio. I will go more into detail in future posts. Only showcase your best work. You need to show your range as a writer. Also, it is okay to add sub-categories if you are pitching your work to a specific company.

2. Edit

You need to proofread your selected portfolio material over and over again. I cannot stress this enough. Grammatical errors are unacceptable. The flow of your content needs to be consistent. No misplaced words. No company will hire you if your writing is not clear, concise, descriptive and fresh.

3. Style your Portfolio

Now comes the fun part, shopping!!! Visit your local office supply store to pick out a portfolio you would like. This is your career at stake, so do not skimp on a high school binder. Leather-bound portfolios can be costly but they are effective and professional.

4. Arrange your Work

Now you can start placing your work in the your portfolio. Use every creative liberty you possess, but make sure you keep it professional. Unless your applying to be Chucky Cheese's content writer.

5. Know your Work

99% of the time you will find yourself speaking with potential clients about your work. You will need to KNOW your work so that you may convey that message to their businesses; how will your personality shine through their business? Practice your pitch on family members, friends, and even other bloggers online.

Meditation for Writers

Meditation is not only a science of the mind, it is an art of focusing your attention on one particular thing. It is the practice of control and the experience of solitude. Have you ever gone a day in your life in complete serenity? Assuming not, this is why meditation for beginners can be extremely hard and it will take a lot of time and effort.

What you must realize, when first practicing the art of meditation, the addiction of distraction is your worst enemy, especially for writers. We are constantly wracking our brains for new ideas, thoughts, solutions. I began meditating to help me sleep, become complacent, and relax. Let's walk through a few steps to help you increase your concentration and decrease the anxiety that surrounds you.

1. Atmosphere

It is essential to choose a place for meditation that is inviting to your inner self. If you should meditate indoors, pick a room without a clock and minimal decor. When practicing the art of meditation as a beginner it is mandatory to remove items that may distract you including your cell phone, photos on the wall, and modern music.

Since you are a beginner, music can be helpful to your practice if used correctly. It is recommended that you use nature sounds because they enhance the elemental feeling of connection. If you are a visionary, find a song that relates to the purpose of your meditation. This way, you can allow the song to capture your essence and bring you to the realization that you are searching for. I prefer Celtic or rain music.

2. Practice

Most of the time we begin things and fail to finish them because we get frustrated with the outcome. This is why it is necessary to set aside a special time every day so that you may progress in your meditative practice. When beginning the art, most of us assume that we should all sit like Yogi the Bear. No. Take some time to experiment with different poses until you find one that is comfortable for you.

When you find that perfect meditation pose, you will begin to hear your breath. When all is still, you will notice frustration creep up on you like a nest of spiders. It is at this point that you must really practice your breathing exercises.

Breathing deep slows the heart rate, relaxes the muscles and focuses the mind. In the beginning you will find that focus is your worst enemy, but practice will help you find a crutch that will release your inhibitions and frustrations.

3. Find A Purpose

Some people begin the practice of meditation to only achieve the out of body experience. Well, without a purpose for that specific experience, there is no chance of feeling that sensation. If you meditate without a purpose then the addiction of distraction will overcome you.

Concentration is necessary for the art of meditation and it is with purpose that you will be able to connect with your inner self. Meditation for beginners can be stressful, but if your purpose for seeking serenity is genuine, you will quickly learn the art and become familiar with your powerful spirit.

30 Day Writing Challenge: Get Ready!

There are so many beautiful and inspiring ideas in the world, they begin with you. But bringing these ideas to life can be one of the most challenging aspects a writer will face. Especially when you want to convey particular emotions without a clear voice. I still have this challenge and do you want to know why? It's because I don't know as much about me as I think I do. Think about it, if you can't designate the basics of your life, how in the world will you convey those emotional experiences to your readers? Well, you can't.

So, starting June 1st - June 30th, we are going to explore ourselves, our history; we are going to spend 30 consecutive days writing about things we never think about. We are going to dig deeper into ourselves by evaluating our past, what we learned from it, and what we expected out of the future. Doesn't this sound like so much fun? I cannot wait to get started. How to Properly Outline a Short Story

It is really important that authors-to-be learn how to properly outline a short story (I call them Shorty's). Writers tend to get overly excited about their ideas as a new best-selling novel. When in fact, you've probably overwhelmed yourself into a state of not writing at all. I've been there. But shorty's are the only way to properly train your mind into organization for a novel.

Think about it; a shorty is metaphoric, straight to the point with nothing in between. Novels have more depth, more conversation. But what is the point of all that talk if there isn't a good outline? Now that I have your attention forget about writing the next best-seller and concentrate on the basics. No matter how advanced you are in writing, your skills mean nothing if they aren't organized.

Introduction

Introductions are so important to any story. Your opening must catch the reader's attention. Be careful, the first two sentences of your shorty will determine if your readers determine whether or not they should continue. For example, you DO NOT want to start your story with Amy was sad. Ick, I've thrown your story away. You must be simple but intriguing; Amy turned her head toward the sky, letting the rain mingle with her tears. Huzzah! You now have a fabulous introduction, and I want to know why your character is so heart broken.

Setting & Time

Ironically, locations are really important to a shorty. The presence in which your shorty takes place should be introduced in the second sentence; at least the first paragraph. Remember, it's not about telling your readers where they are, it's about making them feel they just entered your story.

For example, we would never say it was 1560 in Scotland and Queen Mary was dead. Rather, we use descriptions like, Queen Mary was forcefully abdicated, leaving her city state vulnerable to the Catholic overthrow. Now, that's juicy stuff!

Characters

Now, every story needs a protagonist and an antagonist. The protagonist must ALWAYS have human characteristics. If your hero/heroine cannot be related to than no one will cheer for them. You protagonist must be in search of something with a want for achievement Even if you kill off your hero/heroine, they better be fighting for something.

The antagonist of your story is the one who constantly finds a way to disrupt your protagonists goals. You can make your protagonist be their own worst enemy.

Point of View

Now, pay attention. Many authors like to use first person writing but it comes with a cost. If you choose a character to narrate a story, they have to be where the action is 24/7. It takes a lot of practice to get it right. Third person is recommended for beginning authors. It is easier to narrate the story. And if you ever use second person in a shorty, well, at least you tried.

Inciting Incident

This is where writing a story gets very difficult. Your characters must have incentives in order to pursue their journey to success or failure. This is the event that gets your hero/heroine going. But be careful, your story must correlate with your incident.

For example, Harry Potters world turned upside down when he finally got hold of a letter; a very special letter telling him he was a wizard. His entire life changed at that moment.

Climax

Pick your climax very carefully. This is the point of your shorty where the antagonist gets in the way. This is the moment where your hero/heroine will either win, lose, or draw. Especially in short stories, you must offer a lesson to your readers. You want to make them feel change.

For example, the climax of the Lord of the Rings was the death of Gandalf the Grey. The audience had grown to love and respect this elder. His death changed the hearts of every reader. Why? Because it effected the hero, Frodo Baggins.

Conclusion

This is where your story completes itself in a powerful, compelling and indelible way. DO NOT weaken your story with a limp ending. Your ending should effect every single character created, good and bad. Remember the death of Voldemort in Harry Potter. Not only did it strike happiness and relief in the protagonists but it enveloped fear and change in the hearts of the antagonists.

Okay, it is no secret that I love to write. Recently I have had much time to reflect on stories I have started and realized I was missing something; passion. All writers begin with a dream, they want to create the next best seller. But there is a problem with that, what is your work truly worth if there is no conviction or relation?

Well, I have a solution to that problem. I am going to explore writing on my blog and share writing prompts to help you get started. Even more so, in the future we will explore important topics together that help a writer reach their fullest potential. Good luck! And remember, writing is about you, not about anyone else. Even though Stephen King has some book bombs, they are still his diary; his life. Make your stories personable and the readers will follow.

Describe Your Favorite Color to A Blind Person

Yellow is the color of exasperating joy. It is the color of the soul that makes one appreciate even the simplest of smiles. Yellow is sour but never leaves your taste wanting for anything sweet. It never leaves you troubled or threatened. Yellow is the color of accomplishment with the knowledge of being proud, yet humble. It is the fragrance of an old book not opened for decades. Yellow is gritty and feels like warm sand between your toes. It illustrates the melody of life with a gentle buzz. Yellow hums in the wind and shines even the darkest of places.

Let's Review:

Clearly, when writing this prompt it is important to remember that blind people cannot see with their eyes. Yes, that is repetitive but it bears repeating. They utilize their other senses to see the color being described to them. Therefore we cannot use sight words.

Emotions are so important to literature, especially if you're describing something to someone who cannot see it. It doesn't matter how silly your emotions sound, if that's the way you feel than you should write it down.

2. Taste: yellow is sour but never leaves your taste wanting for something sweet.

Did you see what I did there? I chose a taste that is commonly associated with my favorite color. Therefore it is easy to relate to and recall.

3. Touch: Yellow is gritty and feels like warm sand between your toes.

One of the most difficult things for writers to clearly write about is touch. They tend to use too many adjectives. Trust me, I was the same way. Be clear, be concise.

4. Smell: It is the fragrance of an old book not opened for decades.

Now, I took a leap using this metaphor of smell for my color. Others may associate different colors with an old book. But it is personable. Yellow is my favorite color and I love the smell of old books. It would make sense for me to utilize that metaphor.

5. Sound: It illustrates the melody of life with a gentle buzz. Yellow hums in the wind and shines even the darkest of places.

This one was little hard for me. Clearly, when reading this, the word buzz makes you think of bees, maybe even a hummingbird.

What I Learned from Belle

When I was 16 years old I had the opportunity to join the Zion Youth Symphony Orchestra. Oh, what a pleasure that was. After our Bon Voyage concert we performed at Disney Land. In which we had the pleasurable opportunity of recording over the timeless classic Beauty and the Beast. Being able to work with an original music script by Alan Menkin was one of the greatest experiences of my life.

Traditionally, the first known version of Beauty and the Beast was written in French in 1756 by Jeanne-Marie le Prince de Beaumont. In 1991 the infamous Disney classic was released, continuing the talents and dreams of one of the worlds greatest heroes; Walt Disney. Now, the story has become renowned for its magic on film and on stage. Very few people, myself included, forget the memorable characters it portrays. I believe that his story holds many valuable truths and timeless messages that apply to all of us.

Be Your Own Creation

Belle teaches us the value of following our hearts and becoming who we believe we are created to be. During the French Revolution, women who educated themselves outside of social status were mocked and considered, well, odd. Granted, I am no woman, but many people assume that my social status as a man entails the alpha male persona. I couldn't be farther from that expectation. Education is my passion. Though I may not have much to show for it, I believe that one day it will pay off.

The Golden Rule

Did you ever noticed how kind and just Belle was with every person she interacted with. Unafraid to speak the truth, unafraid to do what's right. We see this first act when she freely gives her life for her fathers. I can't imagine how horribly fearful she must have felt. Belle has always been one of my heroines and it is her genuity and unfettered kindness that inspires me to be better. Always treat others the way you wish to be treated.

The Heart Sees More than the Eyes

Had Belle refused to look past the physical appearance of the Beast, she clearly would have missed out on the most important part of her life; something more. But, disregarding the Beasts form, she looked into his heart. What an amazing world it would be if we all took the patience to learn of others this way. Love is not the opposite of hate, it is indifference.

We Accept the Love we Feel we Deserve

Can you imagine if Belle had accepted Gaston's proposal for marriage. Granted, her social status would have risen considerably within the village. While many women were swooning over the towns catch, Belle refused to comply. She was a beautiful, smart girl, with the hope for true love. Belle taught me that there is no substitute for true love. And if you waist your chance for happiness on the expectations of others, you will be lonely for the rest of your life.

Two more small bits of advice, if you don't take anything from this story at least remember to control your temper. And, "if it ain't baroque, don't fix it." Even if you've seen the show before, watch it again. Remember the dreams and ambitions you set for yourself. Remember the importance of genuine kindness. Look for the good and mystery in the world. Don't wait for it. Follow your heart.

How I Battled Depression

Growing up, I constantly struggled with the pains of depression. I grew up with hemophilia and epilepsy. Let's just say it put me out of my happy place for a while. Eventually I became tired of placing unnecessary chemicals inside my body that only made me feel worse, so I looked for some natural mental solutions and I found them. Right now, I am going to share my methods with you.

1. Understand the Emotional Cycle

Life is an emotional roller coaster. Some days you feel like nothing can stop you. Other days you feel utterly hopeless. Most of the time you’re somewhere in between. Understanding the pattern of positive and negative emotions will help you put your feelings in perspective. Next time you feel down, just remember that it’s a natural emotion that will inevitably pass. Knowing that a feeling of depression is only temporary makes it less dreadful.

2. Spend Time with Positive People

Nothing affects the way you think and feel more than the people you interact with. Thoughts (both positive and negative) are contagious. If you are surrounded by negative people, it’s only natural that you’ll start to think and feel the same way. To improve your outlook on life, spend time with positive people. Search them out and try to understand the way they see the world. Chances are their happiness will rub off.

3. Reflect on Past Success

In the wake of a colossal failure, it’s easy to forget everything you’ve ever done right. Take a few minutes to remember your past accomplishments and build yourself up. What made you successful before? What are your strengths? Frequently, this exercise will build self confidence, help you figure out what went wrong, and generate ideas for success in the future.

4. Focus on Gratitude

It’s human nature to measure ourselves against those ahead of us on the social ladder. Studies have shown that people care more about being richer than their friends than actually making more money. When you consider everything good in your life and compare it to the problems of less fortunate people, the issue that’s making you depressed won’t seem as serious.

5. Change of Scenery

One of the best ways to change the way you feel is to change your environment. When you get in a slump, you start to associate your problems with everything around you. It can get to the point where your environment is a constant reminder of your problems. This can be a dangerous cycle. The solution is to change things. Change doesn’t have to be radical. Cleaning up, adding more lights, or including pleasant decorations can completely change the mood of a room.

6. Break your Routine

Going through the same routine, day after day, can be monotonous and depressing. It often leads to getting caught in a rut. To get out of it you need to temporarily change your routine. If you can, take a day off from work. Do something you don’t normally have time for or something you’ve never tried. In the long run, taking a day off every now and then to get out of slump will make you happier and more productive.

7. Interact with Animals and Nature

It’s funny when you consider how humans put so much importance on their own tiny problems. Animals don’t think this way. A little bird doesn’t mope around because it isn’t an eagle or because another bird beat it to a tasty seed. Animals live in the present moment and they show love unconditionally. Observing and interacting with them will help you get over your problems.

8. Get Moving

As Johnny Cash famously suggested, “Get a rhythm, when you get the blues.” Moving to a beat makes everyone feel better. The same is true for movement in general. Hitting the gym or going for a walk will help you shed the lethargy that comes with feeling depressed. The more enthusiastic your moments, the better you will start to feel.

9. Think About the Big Picture

As Carl Sagan made evident with the Pale Blue Dot, we’re insignificant creatures living in a vast universe on a tiny planet. In the long run, everything we do will probably be forgotten. Some might find this depressing, but it shouldn’t be. It means that all our problems are illusory. In a million years no one will remember what you did or didn’t do. What matters is the present moment and enjoying every second of life that we’re blessed with.

10. Do Something to Help Yourself

Above all, the best way to stop feeling depressed is to take action. What is your biggest problem? How can you alleviate it? Once you decide to stop moping and start moving forward you won’t have time to feel depressed. Action will occupy your mind and give you something to look forward to. Once you get some results, you’ll build momentum and positive thinking will keep getting easier.

If you asked anyone that knew me they would probably tell that I am neither pleasant nor practical. Besides the fact, you have to admit that it's a catchy title. Not to mention I spent hours on my banner. Yes, I did, in fact, make that all by myself. No matter, I have decided to keep a personal blog that features me. Wow, that sounds really conceded. But, come on, you blog about yourself too, am I right?
Besides, I find that our personal life stories are what help others to grow. And what is the point of living such a glorious life if you can't brag about it?

A little about James

I am a dreamer, a philanthropist, and true hero to many people... Nah, I'm just jerking your chain. Quite frankly I am a coffee addict with an thirst for knowledge. I grew up with a bleeding disorder, Hemophilia, which didn't leave much room for physical exertion. So, I have grown to love the written word and others' perspectives on many topics.

It is no secret that I dream to be a writer one day. I still have many things to achieve before that becomes a reality. But I believe it is a dream worth fighting for, just like any other. This is odd, usually I have much to say but I think I'll save a little mystery for my readers. That, and I'm really drawing blanks right now.
