Ugobe sent out a mass E-mail to readers on its update list, updating them on Pleo's production status and anticipated ship date.  The wonderful news is that Pleo is officially in production and Ugobe states that those who have preorders from a retailer in the USA will receive their Pleos before December 25, 2007. Pleo's core computer technology is based on the venerable ARM processor.  According to an older ComputerWorld article:

This means that although it is fun to think about treating him or her like a little dog or cat, there are a few things you just can't do.  For example, never give Pleo a bath. Instead of forcing Pleo out the door with a limitation that would frustrate Pleo owners, Ugobe has bit the bullet and is doing the hard thing. They were having a little fun with an early Pleo prototype during a news conference, pretending that Pleo had decide to take an extreme interest in Bob's finger! At the current time Pleo does not have voice recognition or speech recognition.  Since Pleo is upgradeable, perhaps he (or she) may have either of those capabilities at a later time; but currently the answer is no.

This E-mail was sent out in error and Wal-Mart says that the system glitch has been fixed.  A thread on the Pleo World forum addresses this recent problem and is quoted here:

The first batch of Pleos, either First Hatch group or the main batch soon thereafter, will not have the herd technology.  This is technology that Ugobe plans to implement at a later date.
