<br>Event Description: Please join the College of Liberal Arts for the University Forum Lecture " Birds of Prey of the American West," a talk by Martin Tyner, master falconer, licensed wildlife rehabilitator, educator and author, Southwest Wildlife Foundation.

This talk will provide a very enjoyable and humane look into the world of raptors. Tonight’s speaker will guide his audience through an overview of the amazing world of wildlife rescue and environmental action. Much of his talk will be supplemented by simultaneous slides and video clips of the various birds of prey that he is discussing. But the most innovative part of his presentation will involve introducing the audience to one of his great rescues: a live Golden Eagle that Mr. Tyner will bring to the stage to better illustrate the numerous points that he is making. All of the birds that he works with are rescues.

2014 is the 50th anniversary of the signing of The 1964 Wilderness Act. Since then the U.S. has designated 109 million acres of public land as Wilderness. Early advocates like Leopold, Zahniser, Carhart, and the Muries created a national movement to pause development forces and encourage consideration of preservation. Garry will provide a brief history of wilderness-preservation efforts in the U.S., introduce the audience to several of his favorite wilderness areas, discuss management challenges currently being faced in wilderness protection, and leave the audience with hope for the future.

Summary:
This trip will take volunteers into the Desert National Wildlife Refuge, the nation’s largest wildlife refuge in the contiguous U.S. This opportunity provides students with the ability to learn about their local environment, management &amp; restoration issues as well as life skills like using hand tools and camping. We will be camping Sunday through Friday at an undeveloped campground near the intersection of Gass Peak Rd and Mormon Well Rd. Although the site is undeveloped we will build a basecamp with a kitchen and 2 portable restrooms. All meals unless otherwise noted are included and water is provided at all times.
The work that volunteers will be expected to carry out will include naturalizing road scars from illegal trespass, planting native vegetation and clearing debris to improve wildlife habitat and restore areas to a more natural state. Tools will be used daily and all protective equipment will be provided. The work areas will be outside and exposed to weather for the week. Volunteers need to be prepared for a variety of conditions, see the equipment list attached. The project leaders will make every endeavor to accommodate all participants. Volunteers 18 of age and above (without legal guardian) can participate.

General Itinerary:
Participants will arrive by 4 pm Sunday March16th. No dinner will be served but will have a tasty treat to welcome everyone. A speaker will be with us around 6:30 pm.
Breakfast will be served at 7:30 am. Breakfast will consist of hot water, coffee and a continental breakfast. Lunch items will be provided where participants put together their lunch which will consist of lunch meats, bread, snacks and other items. It is the participants responsibility to get their lunch together before departing the basecamp. At 8:30 am participants will gather to discuss the day’s goals and safety issues. We will be on the road by 9:00 am. We will take a lunch break in the field and return to basecamp no later than 4:30pm. We will have dinner served by 5:30 pm. Dinners will consist of hot, hearty meals. An educational speaker will join us for a talk after dinner.
Friday March 21st breakfast will be served and participants will pack up to head home.

This summer, the U.S. Forest Service, along with agency partners and volunteers, has been building a trail to connect the South Loop trail to Griffith Peak. As part of this project, we will be rehabilitating damaged areas of Mt. Charleston blue butterfly habitat. Over the past several weeks, volunteers have been collecting seeds from near Griffith Peak to be planted in the damaged areas. Volunteers are needed on Saturday, Sept. 17, to use these seeds to make seed balls -- a combination of soil, clay and seeds -- which will later be brought to Griffith Peak to be planted. This event will be held in the interagency office on N. Torrey Pines Dr. (near the Craig-Rancho intersection) and will run all day, so volunteers can participate when and for as long as is convenient. This is a great opportunity to protect the environment without having to travel far from home.

Jump in Crystal stream at Ash Meadows and help cut overgrown cattails. Removing cattails helps improve habitat for the endangered Ash Meadows Amargosa pupfish! Warning: you WILL get wet, but the water is warm! Individuals need to be in fairly good physical condition as planting requires bending, kneeling, and getting dirty. Plan to be outside in warm, sunny conditions with no shade - a hat, sunscreen, old sneakers, and a change of dry clothes for afterwards are recommended. Work gloves, tools, water, snacks, and a good time will be provided! All volunteers are invited to stay afterwards for a unique musical performance and buffet lunch in our visitor center. Rest, relax, and reflect on the inspirational sounds of hand-carved Native American flutes, performed by musician Richard Stephens. We hope that you will join us for this special celebration of National Public Lands Day at Ash Meadows!

Time: 8:00am - 12:00pm
Audience: Adults, Seniors, Groups, must be at least 8 yrs. old. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult
Location: Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge
Agency: US Fish and Wildlife Service
Volunteer Work Type: Cattail Cutting
