I was re-listening to one of the lessons from Jim Edward’s True Life Success Lessons (no longer available) and another one of the truths struck me.

It struck so hard that I printed it out and put it up on my wall.

Isn’t it funny – not in the ha-ha sort of way, but rather in the ‘isn’t that different’ sort of way – that you can hear something several times and each time it strikes you differently?

I’ve listened to his tapes over and over again. They’ve made such a great difference in my life, my productivity and the way in which I approach my business. This time something he said made me stop and take notice.

My success depends upon the choices I make.

That seems simple enough and true enough. And in fact, not really an epiphany but rather a truism that has been accepted for centuries. However, after putting your head down and plowing through the days of production and delivery, the choices you make can get lost in daily activities.

So it’s important to make choices, real choices, and not just get through a to do list that you make up based on the latest email and a panic stricken feeling in the bottom of your gut that you’re not going to finish.

The question that must be answered is “is finishing in my best interest?” Should I finish the project or is it better to make the choice to move on?

I enjoy doing what I do and providing the service that I do because my customers like the quality and the care they receive. However, I can easily get caught up in the day to day activities and forget that it’s necessary to continue to plan and move forward.

The success of any small business person depends, in part, on the ability of the owner to stay focused on the choices they must make each day, each week and each month.

With the help of all that I’ve learned over the years I developed a process that has helped me tremendously. I’ll share that next week.

My daughter is moving to TN next month to start her first year of college. When I signed up to be a mother I expected to be up all night with sick children, changing diapers and dealing with temper tantrums. I kept thinking that driving, dates and moving to another state would come in another lifetime.

Well, that lifetime is here. And now.

The same can be said for my perspective on business. When I first started PLR-Health-Wizard (or any other online concern for that matter!) I am consumed with the start up planning. I love to plan! I love to anticipate what is coming next and even enjoy the day to day production.

But when the landscape changes and the methods of doing business also changes it can be difficult to change with them. And, when the business is 3 years old, as is PLR-Health-Wizard, there is a certain degree of growth and a potential long-term future involved.

According to the Small Business Association more than half of small businesses will close within 5 years of opening. Dun and Bradstreet reports that businesses with less than 20 employees have only a 37% chance of surviving the first four years.

Obviously it’s important to plan. And to persevere.

I think that the single biggest lesson I’ve learned in the past several years. I am running a BUSINESS. This isn’t a one shot deal. I’m not selling a quick ebook and off to another launch. This is a business, like other brick and mortar businesses. And, if I plan and run it like a business then I’ll reap those benefits.

My customers have grown to appreciate this knowledge because it has led to exemplary customer service, quality products and a fair price.

When I started learning about online marketing five years ago I had the same hope or dream that many today have. Could I go to work in my pajamas, click a few buttons and then off to the beach? Knowing, understanding and accepting that this is a business that requires attention, effort and perseverance has benefited me more than anyone else.

On Saturday July 3, 2010, journalist Gene Cherry described the 200 meter run that pitted Tyson Gay against Olympic bronze medalist Walter Dix. The headline is a real classic:

Tired Gay succumbs to Dix in 200 meters

Please tell me what copywriter or editor allowed THAT to slip by? What coincidence brought those two men together in a dual that led to that headline?

Proofing is important – sometimes that means reading it aloud so you aren’t swayed by the spelling of the words

http://www.reuters.com/article/sportsNews/idUSTRE6622I420100703

**Disclaimer: I am not a master proofreader, as is my good friend. I miss spelling errors, insert too many commas or don’t use them at all. I am NOT perfect. But seriously, reading your copy out loud will go a long way toward making it more readable.
