Where many bloggers make their first mistakes is they spend too much time doing things that will ultimately take them in the wrong direction. In order to get back on track you must first realize what you are doing wrong and then fix it. Facebook For Fun

Something that every blogger needs to avoid is using Facebook for fun. I use Facebook on a daily basis, however, it is for blogging purposes. I use Facebook to stay connected to my community, not to chat with friends and play games. If you want to become a better blogger, then you need to avoid Facebook at all costs until you start using it for purely business.

Email Overload

How many emails do you get in an average day? If you are getting emails constantly throughout the day, then it is time that you relieve yourself of this duty. What I recommend is that you take the slowest part of your day and read and answer emails then. For me, this would be in the early morning when I am still half asleep. If you require your email throughout the day, then just make sure you look at only the ones you need and save the rest for later.

Know It All Syndrome

Do you think you know it all when it comes to blogging? As a blogger myself, I have a lot to learn and so does everybody else. There is no way to know everything about blogging because it changes on a daily basis, there is always something new coming out, and we still have Google who rarely shares what they are doing with the rest of us. Just know that it doesn’t hurt to read and learn more and that is why I recommend that you follow 5 or 6 blogs so that you can combine your heads and learn much faster.

Zero Community Time

If you are not committing some of your time to your community, then you will never make it to professional blogger status. As a blogger you have a requirement to your community to talk with them and interact. What I suggest is that you give yourself so much time during the day to interact with your community through Twitter, Facebook, Youtube and most importantly, your blog.

Distracti-Ons

This is something that I made up but it applies here. A distraction is anything that takes you away from the important things you should be doing that day. A distracti-on is anything that is turned on that distracts you. For example, this would be cell phones, televisions, computers, Ipods and anything else that is turned on. Studies show that just leaving a cell phone on will result in 3% less production throughout the day and that I without even using the phone.

Blogging is going to be around for a long time, so you should figure out the right way to do it. If blogging is what you are doing to earn an income, then you should take the list above and eliminate all the bad habits. Don’t think for a second that you have no bad habits, everybody has a bad habit or two.

One tip that I have for you is to write down everything that you do and then go back through it on the weekend. I can guarantee you that after a week or work you will be able to locate and eliminate a few things that you do that are highly unproductive to your blog. Don’t just take my word for it, try it this week and see where you are at.

Content is the sole purpose of a website being a website, without content there is no website. Try to conjure up an image of a website in your head where content does not exist…it’s impossible to because a site without content is the digital incarnation of a newspaper without print. Each and every website that is successful in retaining you as a repeat visitor, has a plan – a strategy – behind their content. Allow me to explain the need for a content strategy.

A content strategy is one of those things that when done well is hard to notice as it is seamless, it becomes one with the site and its goals. I have worked on content strategy in London for a number of years now, and very few people – agency or client side are able to grasp what a content strategy is for. The way I’ve found it best explained, is to think of your most respected television channel, think of the order and the flow of programs throughout the year and what regular features occur at certain stages throughout the year. Romance films around Valentine’s day, young-teen targeted shows throughout the mornings of school holidays, festive programmes at Christmas, none of this is an accident, it’s all planned, managed an delivered. Why should your site be any different?

The view I take on it, is that there are two different levels of content strategy; one as mentioned above is the annual events that occur throughout the year that every site – ecommerce, content or affiliate should prepare and produce content for, and the second is the production of content based on KW research conducted to find out what is popularly being searched for in your particular sector.

The first section I mentioned should always take precedence, this is the staple of your diet as a content providers, as an informer, an entertainer, a website. Neglect the key events of the year at your peril as it can almost be guaranteed that your competitors won’t. The second is content to further throw your brand and tone of voice out there, engage your users and give them some additional content to consume, whether video, article or imagery – anything extra is always welcome.

If you do have the means and the inclination to go a step further and produce extra content then do so, but do so in a structured way, simply diving into commissioning content for the sake of content will fragment your tone of voice, will add extra workload to your team’s schedule and without the proper planning and integration can prove incredibly wasteful. Here’s my brief guide on steps to follow.

–                    Research – determine what content to produce based on KW and search term popularity

–                    Commission – find an agency or source of content you trust in producing, and issue your titles and requirements along with your brand guidelines

–                    QC – quality check everything that comes back from your third party source, if it’s below par, reject it and request it be re-done

–                    Deploy and integrate to your site

–                    Analyse and report on how the content has performed, define your metrics such as bounce rate, path to conversion etc. Where you find patterns take your learnings and carry forth to the next content project

The above is my brief introduction as to the importance of building and deploying a content strategy. Content is, and always will be king. Poor quality content means not only will you receive no love from Google, but you will not impress those users who do find you.

If you want to get somebody to participate, then there is nothing better than sending traffic their way.

Give A Description Of The Article – If you are asked to do something wouldn’t you want to know what it is going to be? Most people will give you an interview but only if you give them the description of the article you are writing. I know a lot of people out there that will simply send out interview questions without giving the expert an idea of what it will be used for. Just know that the more you give experts, the more they will give you. If you have to you might even need to write the article first and then show it to the experts in hopes they will participate.

Ask Important Questions – Something that a lot of people do is ask questions that they can easily find online. If you are into internet marketing and you contact an expert and ask them “Tell me why you build backlinks to your website” they will probably blow you off. The reason why experts do this is because you are not putting any effort into the questions and this is all stuff you can find online. Trust me, if you ask questions that don’t get addressed that often then you will have better luck getting the interview that you really want.

How would you like to have an email list with 50,000 or even 100,000 people on it? This is an email list that most people would die to have. Getting an email list to this size is no easy task, it will take a lot of time and techniques to reach this number. Although there is nothing out there that says you need 50,000 people on an email list, it does help to make more money and get more traffic to your website.

One of the things that most people do to build an email list is they put an opt in form on their website and wait for people to signup. Although this is a good way to get subscribers, it is not the best way to go about doing it. What you need to understand is that each website will have a traffic threshold and because of that the amount of subscribers coming from each website will vary.

What does this mean to you?

To most people they don’t think about this too much but what you need to do is start creating different websites for the sole purpose of getting subscribers. This is called an opt in page and they work really well to get people to do what you want and hand over their email address for it. This is the key to building an email list that you can brag about.

How To Build An Opt In Page

1. The first thing that you should do is find 2-5 different keywords that you can target and buy domains using each one of the keywords. My recommendation is to either use Market Samurai or Long Tail Pro. If you can get a domain that is an exact match, then I would strongly recommend going for it. In your keyword research you will need to target keywords that have decent traffic (500+ local searches) each month.
2. The next thing that you need to do is setup your website as a one page site with the opt in form at the top, middle and at the bottom. My advice would be to use WordPress to do this because it is very simple to do. On the opt in page you want to say why people should put their email address in and in most cases it is to get a free Ebook or something similar. One piece of software that I would recommend buying is Popup Domination because they also have a killer on page subscription form that you can get.
3. Once you have the page built you should interlink all the different sites together so that they pass on link juice to the others (similar to a link wheel). This is very important to do because you want all your keywords to start to rank around the same time, this is where you will see huge upswings in your subscriber count.
4. The final thing you will need to do is start building backlinks. For this I would strongly recommend using Unique Article Wizard because it will automate most of the process. Just know that you can’t build thousands of links overnight, you need to do this slowly (10-15 links per day).

Once you have your pages built you won’t have to do much other than wait until you get more traffic to them. The reason I say this is because you can’t determine how effective your subscription campaign really is until you have had enough traffic to really test it out.

Testing Tips

Rotate Ebooks – Something that I have seen many online gurus do is they rotate their Ebooks between sites to see which keyword and Ebook make the best team. This will take a little while to rotate through all your sites but it is imperative if you want to get the highest opt in rate.

Change Page Layout – Another thing that you can do is change the layout of the page. Most people forget that the page is more important than the Ebook actually is. Trust me, if the page looks like all you are trying to do is get an email address, then most people won’t bother reading it. What you should do is change the wording from time to time, change the color scheme on it and even revamp the entire site if you have to.

As you can see, there are some things that you can do if you are not getting as many subscribers as you want. Tips On Using SEO Smart Links

Create Multiple Links – One of the things that I highly recommend is that you create multiple links to each page that you create. If you write a post titled, “Tips To Make Money Online Fast”, then you should create links like; tips to make money, make money online fast, make money on the internet fast and other things like that.

Don’t Overdo It – Something that I have seen a lot of lately are people trying to build 20 links inside a 400 word post. This may be ok by SEO standards but this is not something you should be doing because it will turn off your readers. The problem with doing this is that you will have a lot of letters inside the post that have different colors and that makes it tough to read. Something that I would do is limit the amount of links you put in each post to 3 per 100 words. This is a good number to start with but like with anything, you need to decide on this number yourself.

Let Plugin do Its Job – If you are using SEO Smart Links, then you need to let the plugin do what it does best and create the links. Something that you don’t want to do is create links using similar anchor text yourself because then your link count will go up and this can mess with the software. Just make sure that if you are going to add a link that you only do so to anchor text that is not assigned to a page on your site.

Do you know how much a “Top list” can benefit your website? If you look around the internet you will see dozens of top lists all over the place but most of them are just long articles. An impeccable top list will contain things that you won’t find in any other article, it will have more to it than any other article and most importantly it will be a “Top ____” that somebody wants to read.

When creating a top list there are a lot of things that go into it and one of the most important things is the research. Now, being that the research is one of the most important parts of a top list, you will need to make sure you have enough time to sit down and do it. For most people they don’t want to do research on a topic that they know a decent amount about and because of this they attempt to write a top list that really is nothing special.

How To Create An Impeccable Top List

Research – Like I said before, research is the most important part of creating a top list. Without the adequate research behind the content it will not be good enough to be shared or even read for that matter. This is where most people fail and fail miserably, don’t be like everybody else and put a lot of work into the research portion of your top list.

One thing that I would recommend is to create a “Top 10” or “Top 100” list because those seem to be the most read. However, you need to understand that the bigger the top list is the more research you will have to do so just be ready for it or hire out some of the research portions of this project.

Content – Once you have done the research phase of this top list you will need to write the content. When writing the content don’t worry about mistakes that you make of leaving something out, this can be fixed later on. Being that this will be a longer article than you are used to you just need to get your thoughts down while you have them in your head. Since you have done a good amount of research there should not be anything that you don’t know about the top list you are writing. Also, a good top list will be over 5,000 words in length.

More Research – When you are done writing the article you should go back and do some more research. I know that you are tired of doing research by now but this is what makes these articles worth reading. If there is something that your readers should know and you don’t already have it, then make sure you add it in. It is the research that will make or break the article so make sure you are doing everything in your power to ensure this articles is the best one you have ever written.

Edit – After the second round of research is done you will need to go back and add whatever you need to, take out things that may be repetitive or lack information and also fix any mistakes that you may have made. If you are going to spend hours on research and even more hours writing the content, then you might as well spend 30 minutes or so adding the finishing content.

Photos – Another thing you need to do is add some good photos. You will see in the 2 examples that I provide below that they have photos that really tie the top list together. Without photos you will lose a lot of readers and you probably won’t get the article shared as much as you wanted to. Trust me, photos are very important and if you can create them yourself or get unique photos then that will be even better.

Sharing – The last thing that you need to do is make it easy to share. Whether that means adding WordPress plugins to your site or just putting links to share on Digg, Twitter, Facebook and other social sharing sites doesn’t matter, just do something to make sharing your top list easy. If you want to get thousands of visitors to your top list, then you want to get people to share it because that is the easiest way to get more traffic.

When creating a top list you need to think about what other people want to read and share. What makes a top list so special is that they catch people’s attention and because of that others will share them more than they would anything else. Just make sure that you are writing the top list with your target audience in mind, I have seen many times where some of my favorite internet marketing blogs create top lists that have nothing to do with the niche and that really bugs me. Don’t waste your time writing a top list that your audience won’t read.

Something that I would highly recommend is that you write down everything you do in an average day and then figure out what you can cut out. Once you do this you will be able to use the wasted time and put it towards something productive.

In business there will always be mistakes that you make but it is how you overcome them and come up better on the other side.
