PLTS is thrilled to BE hosting Carolyn Davidson Brewer, Executive Director of North Texas Library Partners for our Spring Meetings this year. She will be presenting "Help! I Am Not a Social Worker!" at 4 locations in Nebraska the first week of April.

April 2 - Mid Plains Community College, North Platte

April 3 - Kearney Public Library

April 4 - Walt Branch Library, Lincoln

April 5 - Blair Public Library

Awards Nominations

The PLTS Award Committee is once again searching for outstanding library advocates and public librarians for the Excalibur and Advocacy Awards. Both awards will be presented at the PLTS business meeting and luncheon during the NLA Conference in La Vista in October. Nominations must be submitted before August 1st to ensure adequate time to select winners and prepare awards.
Nomination instructions for each award can be found on the Awards page.

2012 PLTS Spring Conferences

This year the Public Library and Trustee Section of NLA will offer Spring Meetings at three locations:

Columbus, April 9
Scottsbluff, April 11
Hastings, April 12

Four topics will be presented at the meetings:

Spring Meetings!

The NLA Public Library and Trustee Section will be partnering with Read Aloud Nebraska and the Regional Library Systems to bring nationally known author and librarian Michael Sullivan to four locations across Nebraska (Alliance, Lexington, Norfolk, Seward) in April. This program is open to the public. We encourage you to pass this information on to your academic colleagues and library customers.

Michael will give two presentations - “Connecting Boys with Books” and “Breaking all the Rules”. You can learn more about Michael and his books at www.talestoldtall.com. His program offers 5 hours of CE credit.

We are very excited to have a new website look! Thanks so much to Megan Boggs, website designer, for getting our new site up and running.

We decided to use the front page of the site to post information pertinent to the PLTS members. And with the economy and funding the way they are today, it’s extremely important that as many NLA PLTS members as possible make their way to the NLA Library Legislative Day on February 25, 2011. Second in importance only to annual conference, this day is your opportunity to interact with the people in the state that control the municipal purse strings, in one way or the other.

This year legislation has been drafted by the Nebraska League of Municipalities and will be proposed this session that will directly affect public libraries in first class cities. NLA passed a motion at the last board meeting, to wit:

… that the Nebraska Library Association support the proposed changes to section 16-251; that NLA will actively campaign against the proposed changes to 51-211; furthermore NLA will drop support for 16-251 and actively campaign against 16-251 if 51-211 is pursued by the League of Municipalities.

It is my understanding that a new draft is available and I look forward to sharing that with you as soon as I receive it from the NLA lobbyist, Ken Winston. I encourage all pubilc library directors and trustees to contact your senator to let them know that we are aware of the legislation and that NLA does support changes to section 16-251. It gives you the perfect opportunity to have a conversation with your senator and let them know some of the positive things that are happening in your library.And there are positive things happening in your library. In fact, why don't you take a moment and send an email to robin.r.clark@gmail.com with a few things that are going well for you? I'll be glad to post them to this website so that we can all celebrate public library successes!
