Kodak has a new premium line of inkjet printers designed for consumers who want printers with intelligent features. These printers are named hero because they have the latest intelligent features, and capabilities like cloud printing. They will also save you money on the cost of ink. The Kodak hero 3.1 is the entry level model; however it does not compromise on print quality. Kodak pigment based inks will deliver great looking documents and Kodak lab quality photos. A great feature that is often overlooked is how easy it is to get started. Steps to set up the printer are covered here. Here is a video clip which will show you in detail how to set up a Kodak hero 3.1 printer.

Here is an overview. First we will unpack the box and power up your new printer. Then we will install the print head, ink and some paper. Finally we will connect the printer and install the print drivers. You're then ready to print.

Here is the detailed version. Before you get started, decide where you want your printer. Consider that you will need some space to load paper and see what you are doing when you are scanning.

Open the box and find the Start Here set up sheet. It has visual clues to walk you through the process. Remove the orange tape and other packing materials from the printer. The print head is in a pouch under the printer's lid.

Attach the power supply to the printer. Plug the power cord into the transformer block and into the wall. The printer will begin to start up a few seconds later. The round directional button will let you scroll through the list of languages and national regions. Pressing the OK button will allow you to select a language and region. From here on you will also be able to follow simple set up steps on the printer display.

Lower the paper output tray and open the printer lid. Remove the print head from the pouch and take off the orange protector. Be careful not to touch the electrical contacts or the printing surface. Place the print head into the printer carriage and press the target to click it into place.

Now open the packages of ink and remove those orange protectors too. Put the ink into position within the print head. Press down on the end closest to you to get them to click into place. Put the lid down and press the OK button.

Next load some regular paper into the paper input tray at the top back side of the printer. Remember you can always refer to the Start Here guide for visual cues.

Press Start and the printer will load a sheet of paper and begin a calibration process. It takes about 30 seconds to print the calibration page. When it is finished, press the OK button.

Choose how you want to connect the printer, Wi-Fi or USB. Scroll down to the one you want and press OK. If you connect by USB, connect the cable after you are prompted to do so during the software installation process. If you are connecting by Wi-Fi, the printer will search for available networks. Use the directional arrows to select the one you wish to connect to and press the OK button. You will next need to enter your network password or wireless key. Use the directional arrows and the OK button to enter characters. Select Done when you are finished. The printer then makes a connection with the network. Press OK to continue.

Put the CD that came with your printer into your computer to load the Kodak software and drivers. It will auto-run the Kodak Printer Installer. As an alternative, you can get the latest software for free at Kodak.com. Just look for the support and drivers link. (If you have previously had another Kodak printer, the software may automatically install if you are connected to the internet.) Select the agreements you want and click Next to continue. Click Next again to register your printer. Rest assured that Kodak keeps any personal information private. Select your printer from the drop down list. Click Next to continue. The software will begin to download. Accept any security warnings by selecting run or install. Near the end of the installation process you will choose how you want your printer connected. You can make other connections say to your smart phone later. Again click Next to continue. The software installation will now be complete. Click Next. You will get a screen with an option to open Kodak Home Center. Click Finish to go ahead and do that. From the main Home Center screen you will see the many ways to explore your printer's capabilities.

That completes the process. If you were following this article because you purchased a new printer, then thank you. And congratulations, you now have an intelligent solution for your printing needs.

The Perfect Accessory for Your Waterproof Pocket Video Camera

A common misconception about waterproof Pocket Video Cameras (PVC's) is that they float. That is actually not true. Most PVC's weigh about 4 ounces, so they will sink if they are not tethered.

Therefore, when you are taking pictures or videos with a pocket video camera while enjoying a water sports activity, it is important to remember to at least use your camera's wrist strap.

If you participate in water sports regularly, the perfect accessory to use with your waterproof PVC is a floating wrist strap like this one:

The KODAK Floating Wrist Strap attaches easily to your camera's wrist strap holder. It helps keep your camera safe and protected. It's essentially a "life preserver" for your camera.

The Floating Wrist Strap is made of buoyant, lightweight nylon and will keep your camera floating in pools, lakes and oceans – any body of water.

I tried the product out a few weeks ago, and created this video. I attached the floating wrist strap to my KODAK PLAYSPORT video camera/Zx5 and dropped it into the pool. It supported the weight of the camera and floated quite nicely, as shown in the photo above.

I'm Touched by Good Reviews

Some of you know that I am fairly new to marketing KODAK printers. But I have worked over 20 years in the inkjet printer industry. Most of that time as an engineer. I have done product component design, prototyping, process optimization and manufacturing equipment design. I later worked to improve inkjet quality and the customer's product experience. Over these many years we have come a long ways. When inkjet printing all started, cloud printing and affordable photo quality pictures for example, were distant dreams.

Today Kodak has a lineup of inkjet printers for home and small business use. Click here to see a short Kodak Hero 7.1 product video. These printers, copy, scan and some fax as well as print. They easily connect to various computers and smart devices. These inkjet printers help us communicate at work, school or for pleasure. They have numerous features that allow your creativity to look great. Today I read many uplifting reviews from customers that clearly enjoy their various Kodak printers. Here are excerpts from a few of these reviews.

"Kodak printers have e-mail addresses and you can e-mail documents to them – from anywhere – and it will print them, and it happens within seconds. It's pretty amazing."

"In addition to its great aesthetic design, the printer is loaded with amazing features. The WiFi, Google Cloud Print, Print from my iPhone are amazing. My favorite (although seemingly simple) is that they included two trays to hold my 8.5x11 and 4x6 paper!!! This makes life so much easier than having to always switch sizes. The option of the touch screen is great as well. My wife uses this to print from her SD card instead of loading pictures to her computer first."

Kodak Hero 7.1 Printer With Paper Trays Out

"One of my favorite features, as it turns out, has been the "quick print' of certain forms – such as a grocery list sheet or a tic-tac-toe page. This might seem superfluous, but I've actually found it quite handy!"

"I print high quality frequently so I MUST have a printer that can meet my image standards, but as a small craft-business owner I SO appreciate the economic value of this printer when it comes to ink!"

"I'm a professional novelist / screenwriter… Kodak has really done their homework to create a durable unit that saves time, money and possesses great diversity in fitting the varied needs of our home business. I've named mine 'Angel' and just love it. (I can't use the name of my wicked former printer here.)

"Niche note: if you're a screen printer, the film positives from this printer are very black. Makes the process of making a screen much easier. My wife is on the way to buy a second one for our martial arts school."

"The prints are great, scan in great, OCR is great… I also really like the network discovery on the printer listing all available networks AND signal strength! Go Kodak!"

I work for Kodak because I love how they use inkjet technology to create a printer for people. These products allow us to better express ourselves to others. We present our work. We show what we have learned. We share pictures of the important moments in our lives. That is good stuff and that is why it touches me to hear from real people who use these printers. You have noticed that these multi function tools have many nifty features. Features that make it easier for us to come together over ideas, share moments and feelings. Because of you customers, we at Kodak are inspired to do more and keep getting better. Thanks to all of you for the good comments and reviews. I am listening.

Kim Brock here with the KODAK EASYSHARE TOUCH Camera. I am going to show you a few cool things you can do with this camera. I will show you how to use the touch shutter - where you can capture images by simply tapping the screen, and two of my favorite creative effects, which are background blur and spot color.

Touch Shutter:

Start by turning on the camera.

Tap the screen to bring up the menu. Then, touch the screen to bring up your menu and select Touch Shutter on the top menu.

You can now tap the screen to capture your image. The green focus brackets will appear where you touch the screen, when you lift your finger and the image will be captured.

Now that you've taken your image, let's get creative.

Spot Color and Background Blur:

Go to the picture you'd like to apply Spot Color or Background Blur to, in review.

Touch the screen to bring up your menu and select the scissors icon to Edit.

Select the wand icon for Effects. Select Photo Effects, then Spot Color or Background Blur.

If you selected Spot Color: your picture will turn black and white. You can then touch the image where you want to reveal color. Continue to reveal color until you are happy with the effect.

If you selected Background Blur: Your picture will become blurry. You can then touch the image to clear blurred areas.

(To change the brush size, select the brush icon in the upper left corner of the menu, then select the size brush you would like to use)

When you are finished, select Apply. Then you can choose to Save as New, Replace Original, or Cancel the effect.

You are now just seven short steps away from worry free sharing of multiple pictures to multiple destinations with one little Kodak app.

Sharing Via Email

First you'll need to input the email address you want your pictures to be sent from. Then you're presented with two choices of how to share your pictures with friends and family.

If you choose Kodak Gallery, and your pictures will be uploaded to your Kodak gallery account and a link to your pictures will be sent to your guests. Once the link is clicked, your images will launch into a slide show for your guest to view. The benefit, you aren't sending multiple files which could mean lengthy downloads or running into MB attachment limitations on your and your friends email accounts. Kodak Gallery requires an account to utilize this service. You can use your current Kodak Gallery account or create a new one. It's simple to do and free.

If you choose normal email pictures will be sent as email attachments from the address you specified. Your friends can download and view your pictures in a software program of their choosing. Selecting "Share as file attachment, then next, will take you to the screen which you'll select from popular email clients. This steps you through the set-up of that account to be used to share your pictures from.

Managing Web sharing destinations

Simply click on the account or sites you want to share pictures or videos with. Enter your Username and password. If applicable enable instant publishing (sharing) of your pictures and videos, once the upload completes. (This gives the Kodak share app permission to upload pictures or videos to that social network account and publish them automatically.) If you don't have an account with one or any of the networks listed but would like one, simply click "add new account" and you'll be pointed to that site to register.

Creative sharing

Here's a great new feature powered by Kodak Gallery. By enabling this feature you'll automatically receive links to creative slide shows of your new photos. For example your photos are shown in a page turning photo book slide show which you can edit and then share with family and friends. or share on Facebook. We do all the work you get all the benefit

Share Messaging

Each time you connect your camera and the app runs, you can customize a message that will accompany your pictures you send to friends and family or post on websites.

Email Lists

Kodak cameras can hold up to 32 email addresses. Use this screen to add or edit email addresses to your camera.

Auto transferred to your computer

Last but not least you can have your pictures not only automatically sent to friends and family but saved to your harddrive in the location of your choice.

Registration

You'll be prompted to register your camera; it's a good idea to do so if you haven't already. You'll be automatically notified about new firmware updates for your camera to keep it running at peak performance

Hints:

- Broadband recommended

- Times to upload and transfer may vary

Facebook & Kodak Picture Kiosk - Better than ever!

Connect and print from Facebook. That's what the Kodak Picture Kiosk "Welcome Screen" says – and that pretty much says it all.

We launched in 2010 and the response was overwhelmingly positive. People literally didn't believe that they could access their Facebook photos and print on the Kodak kiosks. Moreover, many didn't believe that the quality of the prints could be as good as they are. Seeing is believing and those people are now believers after experiencing this first hand.

By the end of this month there will be well over 20,000 retail sites that will offer this service. Many are in the US & Canada – but additional stores are quickly being added all around the world.

New capability that you'll find on the updated Facebook access includes:

Easier to find on top screen: A Print from Facebook button is now directly on the first kiosk screen. This not only makes it obvious that the kiosk is capable of Facebook picture access, but also gets you to some of the most popular products faster (you can also start by selecting any product and choosing Facebook as an input source).

Print from your Friends' photos: Now all those pictures that you didn't take at that picnic, wedding, or party – but that your friends' captured - can be printed by you with the same high-quality that you are used to from the kiosk. If your friends have given you access in their Facebook privacy settings, you can also view and print those pictures from the Kodak Picture Kiosk.

We even added "@" and ".com" buttons to the touchscreen keyboard to make it easier to sign into your account – simple little things that make a big difference.

Kiosk screen now allows you to print photos from your Friends' account:

Your New News (Feed)

Another fun feature we've recently added - the ability to post an update to your Facebook wall. Upon completing your order you will be ask if you'd like to post to your Facebook wall. The message will mention that you just printed from Facebook, the store, as well as the city. If you want to let people know where you were shopping or what city you are in: choose Yes. But if you want to keep your shopping trip a secret – you'll want to say "No" to the wall post offer! But then again – that's what Facebook is all about – sharing and being social – right?!

Beyond the high-quality prints you can make from your Facebook photos on the Kodak Picture Kiosk, you can just as easily create an automatically generated collage or photo book. Collages and photo books make even more sense now that you will have your Friends' images to draw from to create a more meaningful product that people will say – "How did you do that?"!

KODAK PLAYSPORT Video Camera hits 1 million units sold

When the Product Marketing team brought the idea of a waterproof and rugged pocket video camera to our attention we knew instantly it was a good idea. The pocket video camera (PVC) category was in rapid growth. We had a couple great products in the market successfully stealing share from the competition and we had recognition by consumers and buyers that we were making quality pocket video cameras that were better than Flip's (the market leader at the time). With the PlaySport, however, we had a really unique value proposition that nobody else was focused on for PVCs.

We also knew that just making a great product was not enough. The team thought through every detail. Product design of course was priority one. There were multiple iterations, conversations and debate about product colors, materials, finish, user interface including button placements, and especially its industrial design (overall look and feel). Megan Cucci, the Product Marketing Manager for PlaySport, was one of the driving forces to getting this product right by always asking – "what does the target audience want?".

Our cross functional teams worked together to consider everything. Packaging had to communicate clearly and immediately the value proposition. R&D teams worked with marketing to make sure the right features were included and all of them delivered on the promise of HD video, in a rugged and waterproof pocket size device. The team developed merchandising and go to market plans which included determining how to display it at retail, the messaging at point of sale and the marketing tools we needed to sell-in and sell-through this product. We engaged consumers throughout the product development process.

We even went to our social media team to help with the naming of the product. Everyone knew it was time to move away from an alpha numeric naming scheme and give this product some personality through its name. Our MarCom, PR and Social Media teams created a contest and with the help of social media and consumers we had hundreds of names to consider. In fact, two people were rewarded at CES for contributing to the final PlaySport name.

Obviously, the PLAYSPORT has been a huge success for Kodak, selling over 1 million units, consistently ranking high in sales charts and recognized in the media for its unique value proposition and innovative design the world over. Reviewers continue to sing its praise and consumers, well, they have clearly responded.

Most agree, life is an adventure. The PlaySport line is here to help you soak it up and share it in HD.

Print from anywhere, from any mobile device

Hello, my name is Jean-Henri Cote, and I am a Future Product Manager in KODAK's Consumer Inkjet division. Today I would like to tell you about the exciting new Cloud Printing services that KODAK launched on September 7th, 2011.

First, let me describe what this Cloud Printing thing is exactly, and what it can do for you. The "Cloud" is really just another word for the "Internet", and "Cloud Printing" means that you are printing from an internet service, rather than from a driver that has been installed on a PC.

Simply put: Cloud Printing is an internet based service, that lets you print from anywhere, using a smartphone, tablet, or any other device that has an internet connection.

For maximum flexibility and convenience, KODAK AiO Printer owners have two free Cloud Printing services to choose from.

Google Cloud Print http://www.google.com/cloudprint/learn/, lets you print from Google Cloud Print enabled apps such as gmail, Google Docs, Chrome OS, or third party Cloud Print enabled apps found in the Android market. Google Cloud Print is the right choice if you use Google apps, Android, or Chrome OS.

KODAK Email Print service, an add-on to Google Cloud Print, lets you send files to your printer's email address. KODAK Email Print is the best choice if you want to print via email.

All KODAK HERO, ESP 300 series, and ESP Office 2100 series printers are "Cloud Ready", which means that you can print directly to these printers, using Cloud Printing, from any device that has an internet connection. (See www.kodak.com/go/cloudreadyprinters for more info.)

For example, let's say you are sitting with your smartphone in hand, on your sofa in the family room. You want to send a photo on your phone to a friend's KODAK AIO Printer, located in another city. With KODAK Email Print, all you need to do is open your smartphone email program, attach the photo, and send it to the printer's email address. Moments later it will print - just like that.

KODAK Email Print: screen shot of Android tablet email program, with multiple attachments, ready to send to a KODAK printer:

Or, let's say you are sitting in on a beach in Hawaii, accessing Google Docs on your tablet. Google Docs will let you print any document through Google Cloud Print, simply by pressing a print button. You could select a pdf file, for example, and send it to a KODAK printer in the New York, or anywhere else in the world.

Google Cloud Print: screen shot of Print button on the mobile version of Google Docs:

Cloud Printing is convenient, reliable, secure, and fun! There is no need to install software or drivers. All you need to do is register your printer for the service, and you will be ready to print.

Do you have an older KODAK printer, not on the list of "Cloud Ready" printers above? No problem! All you need to do is install the KODAK Cloud Printing Software Connector on a PC or Mac connected to your legacy KODAK printer, and you will be ready to print. It's an easy upgrade that gets you the latest printing technology - for free!

To learn more about Cloud Printing, visit www.kodak.com/go/cloudprinting. If you would like to get started with Cloud Printing now, visit www.kodak.com/go/cloudprintingsetup.

Thanks for reading this Blog post! Once you have given Cloud Printing a try, please come back and comment on how it worked for you. Have fun printing from the cloud!

Kodak is known for ease of use from it's early heritage of providing consumer film cameras to the masses. The EASYSHARE TOUCH (M5370) continues that rich heritage with the introduction of the six touch screen camera since the EASYSHARE ONE camera in 2005. Each generation of touch camera since that product has continued to strive for the best possible user experience. In 2011, we are excited to bring the latest in Kodak touch screen innovations to the consumer digital camera market. Through user centered design processes the Kodak user interface design team has delivered a touch screen user experience that enables a responsive, immersive, visual, emotive, and timely experience. Some of the highlights of this user experience start with intuitive physical controls that enable one-click picture taking, video recording, sharing, and image review. The large 3.0" high resolution display offers fast capacitive touch performance that is similar to what consumers would expect from their current smart phones.
Why would I want to cloud print?

Last January Google TM announced the launch of a new service called Google Cloud Print TM. Today KODAK announces a new line of HERO printers that are Google Cloud Print ready.

OK, I like technology stuff that is cool and makes my life easier. Still I had to ask myself "Why would anyone need this?" The answer came to me with examples. I was visiting a friend's office last Friday and as lunch hour came we decided to continue meeting over a meal at a local restaurant we both liked. I remembered I had a half off coupon in my email that we could use. To print it out I had to borrow my friends PC and log into my email and print it out. We did it but it was not very convenient. If I had the ability to cloud print, I could have simply printed the coupon on my friends Kodak printer directly from my smart phone. This would have been much faster and less intrusive into our conversation.

It is true that more of us are on the go a lot. Smart devices have allowed us to bring information resources with us wherever we are. We attend meetings in our cars. We meet clients on their turf more than ever before. Now cloud printing has brought us more flexibility and efficiency. Say for example you are away from your office making rounds with clients. Throughout your day, you can send documents, pictures, forms and brochures to your printer. They will be ready for you when you do get to your desk. You are more efficient because you don't need to remember what you were doing earlier and re-open the things you needed to print. You just got yourself more of those minutes we all need more of. For me that is the value of cloud printing.

All KODAK HERO All-in-One Printers are Google Cloud Print ready. Kodak has additionally made product updates available so all of its prior generation printers can use this service too. All Kodak printers also have the power of KODAK Email Print Service, an intelligent service that will allow you to send emails and attachments to your Kodak AiO printer from anywhere, using any email account. With Kodak Email Print Service you can even share your printer's unique email address with others so you can receive printed files or photos.

I am convinced. I can print on the go. These features are easy to use and will make me more productive. That ultimately gives me some of my personal time back so I can have more fun. To learn more, visit www.Kodak.com/go/cloudprinting.

Consumers vote with their wallets – KODAK Pulse Digital Frame ranked 1st in retail revenue share

Today we announced a major milestone for Kodak's 7" Pulse Digital Frame; It was ranked 1st in Digital Picture Frame (DPF) Retail Revenue Share by The NPD Group. For the first six months of 2011, Pulse has remained the leader in total purchase dollars spent, at NPD tracked retail locations, and earned revenues which exceed that of any other frame.

In case you haven't heard about Pulse, it's a digital frame with its own email address and the ability stream pictures from Facebook and Kodak Gallery. Pulse solves the #1 problem people have with DPFs: keeping their frames fresh with new and interesting pictures. Its built-in Wi-Fi and touch screen makes it simple to setup and use. Once configured, new pictures are automatically sent to the frame and displayed for your viewing enjoyment. Now, Kodak's Pulse Digital Frame even has an activity sensor that turns the power off when no one is around.

Here at Kodak, our team is very pleased to see that consumers are recognizing the benefits of Pulse. It's a long process to create a category changer like Pulse: first it's necessary to truly understand what consumers want. You next have to create a solution that delivers it in a simple and compelling manner. Finally, you need to launch it and "get the word out." We've always had confidence that Pulse would be a success, but actually getting confirmation from consumers is very rewarding.

Along the way, Pulse has received some outstanding reviews by experts in the field and consumer at Amazon. This feedback keeps us moving toward a better experience for our future products. Thanks to all of you who have helped us achieve this milestone by purchasing this product, providing feedback, and especially to those of you who have recommended Pulse to a friend or family member!

I'm not really that good at waiting. I'm trying to get better, but when we go on a trip my wife still reminds me that I always seem to be in a hurry to get started, and I'm always anxious to get back. I'm OK in between – I enjoy visiting and relaxing – but the time between the "now" when I'm here and the "then" when I'm there always seems to take too long.

For me, it's important to plan for the wait up front – knowing in advance that a trip is going to take an hour, or a day, or longer, helps me to plan my time and keep my blood pressure low. So a trip that takes four hours can be OK, but a one hour flight that gets a three-hour delay added to it – that's much worse.

Right now, I'm getting ready for a new trip – one that's going to take a long time. A really long time: five years, to be exact.

That's how long NASA's Juno Orbiter spacecraft, which is scheduled for launch this Friday, will take to travel from the Earth to Jupiter. During the trip the spacecraft will travel 1.8 billion miles (2.9 billion km), and its trajectory will actually bring it back to Earth before heading out toward Jupiter.

Only after arriving at Jupiter in 2016 will Juno begin its mission to explore the gas giant, looking for clues to the origin of the planet and the solar system. Juno is packed with a number of instruments, but I'm especially interested in JunoCam, a camera designed by Malin Space Science Systems (MSSS) that will take the first full color pictures of Jupiter from orbit. JunoCam will use a KODAK KAI-2020 Image Sensor to capture images of Jupiter's cloud tops at up to 3 km per pixel, providing an unprecedented view of the planet.

This is the eleventh time MSSS has selected KODAK Image Sensors for use in a spaceflight imaging system, and we're pretty excited to be a part of this new mission as well. But it's not the last – MSSS also selected KODAK Image Sensors to be part of four different imaging systems on the Mars Science Laboratory rover "Curiosity" that is set to launch this November. And the Russian spacecraft Phobos-Grunt, also scheduled to launch in November, will use KODAK CCDs on its mission to land on the Martian moon Phobos, collect samples, and then return them back to Earth in 2014.

Five years is a long time. By 2016, we will have completed one Presidential election in the US, and be deep in the throes of a second. Athletes at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro will be looking back at the 2012 London games. Phobos-Grunt will have returned, and Curiosity's primary mission will be completed. And my son, who's starting 5th grade this fall, will be a sophomore in high school. And all of this will happen before Juno even gets to Jupiter.

But since I know up front that this trip is going to take five years, I can use those events as landmarks while Juno continues on its way.

I know it's going to take some time, but the wait will be worth it.

Photographers love the new Kodak PORTRA 160

At the beginning of the year Kodak added the new Professional Portra 160 film to its portfolio of analogue films. In the last few months, as the film became widely available, several photographers from around the globe started working with it. So we asked a few for their opinion about this film.

The German Fashion photographer Philipp Paulus, who tested our Portra 400 last year during a fashion shoot, was again very impressed with our new Kodak Professional Portra 160:

"To me the new Kodak Portra Film is the best choice for fashion or beauty shootings...based on the wonderful fine grain and the beautiful skin tones. Kodak's new film provides a brilliant color reproduction... and can be scanned in such a high quality that it represents a real alternative to digital cameras. Feel free to try and compare it, you will be stunned. The advantages and freedom over digital formats are truly amazing. So I can only say again and again how wonderful it is, that Kodak is developing new films and maintains this amazing film technology." (www.philipp-paulus.com)

When you look at these results, you understand why:

We also had some feedback from Jeroen Toirkens, a documentary photographer from the Netherlands:

"When I received the results from the lab, I was really astonished by the sharpness and the rich colors of the film. Even under difficult lighting conditions, the skin tone and the sharpness stay intact. I am certainly going to use this film on a regular basis. (www.jeroentoirkens.com) Jeroen shared some examples with us:

Ryan Muirhead, Portrait and fashion photographer from the United States also loved the new film: "I found the versatility of the new PORTRA 160 film simply astounding. So many elements of it make my job easier. The latitude has freed me up to approach each shoot uniquely. The new PORTRA film is also a dream to scan. Everything I love about photography takes place behind a camera; everything I hate about photography

takes place behind a computer. With new PORTRA 160, using the proper exposure, I often find myself cutting Photoshop out of my workflow. As a result, I spend more time shooting and less time editing – priceless!" (http://www.ryanmuirhead.com)

The new PORTRA 160 film is available at professional photography shops and the KODAK Online Store.

For the past seven years, the Mars Expressorbiter has been circling Mars, collecting a wealth of scientific information about the Red Planet. But every five months, its particular orbit around the planet also brings it close to the Martian moon Phobos, making it the only spacecraft around Mars that can provide close-up views of this moon.

Earlier encounters with Phobos have resulted in some of the highest resolution images available of that moon, and last month Mars Express and Phobos lined up again for another fly-by. But this time, the orbiter was in just the right place – at just the right time – to capture something else in the picture:

That's Jupiter in the background – actually, 529 million km in the background (or about 3.5 times the distance from the Earth to the Sun). Phobos was much closer, at just over 11,000 km (over 7,000 miles) away.

Mars Express had only a 68 second window when everything would be lined up – the orbiter, the moon, and Jupiter. And in those 68 seconds, it used the spacecraft's Super Resolution Channel camera (a system based on the KODAK KAI-1001 Image Sensor) to capture the 104 images used to make the movie above.

(click image to see full size)

Not bad aim for a remote controlled camera 340 million km from Earth.

Why the interest in Phobos? One reason is that this November, the Russian Federal Space Agency is scheduled to launch Phobos-Grunt – a mission designed to land on Phobos, collect soil from the moon, and then return it back to earth. (When translated from the original Russian, Phobos-Grunt means "Phobos-Soil"). Images of Phobos captured by Mars Express are being used to scout potential landing sites for this mission. And when Phobos-Grunt arrives in early 2013, it will use cameras based on the KODAK KAI-1020 Image Sensor for navigation near the moon, selection of a final landing site, control support during landing, and imaging of the moon's surface.

Of course, this November is also the planned launch of the Mars Science Laboratory, with the rover "Curiosity" scheduled to land on the surface of Mars in August, 2012. Four separate camera systems on the rover use KODAK KAI-2020 Image Sensors, including the MastCam, the science imaging "workhorse" of the rover. And this August, the Juno Orbiter is scheduled to begin a five-year voyage to Jupiter, arriving in 2016. Once it's there, JunoCam (also based on the KODAK KAI-2020 Image Sensor) will provide the first 3-color images of the planet from orbit.

So over the next few years, we stand to learn a lot more about Mars, Phobos, and Jupiter, not only from the spacecraft currently studying them but also from these new missions. And who knows? Maybe one day soon we'll be able to retake this picture from both directions – with cameras on Mars pointed at Jupiter, and cameras on Jupiter pointed at Mars.

And as for Phobos? It will just have to be in the right place at the right time.

We are getting pretty excited about the last installment of the Harry Potter movies and we know there are a lot of others looking forward to it too.

Geek Mom has joined in the fun and has tried out the Kodak Design Gallery Software DVDs to make Harry Potter printables.

"I especially had a good time with the borders and icons. There are enough graphics to choose from that there should be something to fit anyone's style, or particular house sympathies."

"This a fantastic project in which to let your creativity loose. You can make letterhead, collages, flyers, or anything that strikes your fancy. This blank slate option doesn't restrict your creative impulses. Make flyers to hand out for your own Free the House Elves campaign, design a game board with Harry Potter themed pieces, or make a sign to sell butterbeer from your front yard instead of lemonade. The ideas just come so readily when you have these kinds of tools at your disposal."

The Kodak AiO Printers are a hit with these moms too...

"I had a fantastic time designing projects with the software DVDs, and then was able to easily print them on the Kodak ESP C310 All-in-One printer. Unlike the last printer I had to set up, the Kodak C310 was incredibly simple to set up. With my family's varied needs, the copying and scanning functions will get used frequently, and being able to print directly from my SD card or iPad will be useful, too.

The printer was also easy to set up on my network. It was simply a matter of following the included directions. They were a bit like IKEA assembly instructions (which I consider fun), but they were very clear and I encountered no difficulties. It detected my network automatically, and I only had to put in my network key. Then it just worked. No hooking it up to my computer or router. Just plugging it into the wall."

KODAK Share Button & Share Button App: Basic How To and Installation

All Share Button enabled devices, March 2010 and later, allow you to send pictures and videos through the Share Button App, on your computer, to social networking sites, email addresses, and picture frames. With the KODAK Share Button App on your new KODAK camera, you don't have to log in and individually navigate to emails, or social networks, to post and send photos. Your passwords and email address' are securely saved, and you can make room for more KODAK moments.

Unlike what we usually think of as an app, the KODAK Share Button App is not meant for your mobile device. The KODAK Share Button App is software like you would normally download from a CD-ROM, but this software is built right into your camera and makes it possible for the pictures and videos, selected by the Share Button, to be instantly uploaded when you connect your camera to the computer.

After installation you can share in three simple steps:
Step 1: Press "Share" button
Step 2: Select Sharing Destinations
Step 3: Connect the camera, or memory card, to your computer.
              The app does the rest!

Here's a basic how to video on setting up your share button app:

Thirty Minutes

Thirty minutes.

Imagine you had just 30 minutes – 1800 seconds – to capture pictures guaranteed to be seen by billions of people all around the world. Images that would forever be associated with an event that would be covered by almost every newspaper and magazine, on virtually every newscast, and on countless web pages around the world.

And you had only 30 minutes.

And not just any pictures – wedding pictures. Of a beautiful bride, and a handsome groom. And young bridesmaids and page boys – all under the age of ten – who are more interested in running around instead of standing still for a portrait. Along with some pretty famous parents and grandparents.

One of whom just happens to be the Queen of England.

This was the challenge taken up by photographer Hugo Burnand when he was chosen to shoot the official portraits for the wedding of Price William and (now) Princess Catherine. Burnand estimated that he would only have 30 minutes for the shoot – from the time the couple arrived from Westminster Abby (which was unknown, based on the actual length of the wedding ceremony) to the time they would need to leave for a fly past scheduled once the royal party went out onto the Buckingham Palace balcony to greet the crowds. And in that time, he had at least five different pictures to take, with an additional two that would be added into the mix if possible.

30 minutes, five (or more) shots, and a room full of royals. You'd better make sure nothing goes wrong.

So Burnand spent several days in advance planning everything out – the locations, the lighting, and even the design of the shots themselves, working with stand-ins for the royal party to make sure everything was set. But all the planning in the world doesn't help if you don't have the right tools for the job. And for this shoot – for pictures that would be seen the world over – Burnand went with the best he could find: Hasselblad H4D-50 cameras, powered by the 50 megapixel KODAK KAF-50100 Image Sensor.

Hasselblad has posted a nice piece that gives some additional detail on Burnand's preparations for what he calls the "Gig of the Century", including the three cameras he used for the shoot (because he wanted a "back up for my back up").

But when you look at the pictures, remember that this Kodak Moment was on a pretty tight time schedule.

Thirty minutes, to be exact.

Help Contribute to Sustainability-Trade-in or Recycle Used Products

If you are like me, you have film and digital cameras that you no longer use which are tucked away in a drawer or closet. You might even have a printer or two in the basement. Why not try to get some cash for them and contribute to sustainability. To get started, go to Kodak's Trade-in and Recycling site, register and enter information about your products using a handful of drop-down menus. Once entered you simply click to get an instant quote. If you like the result, you can accept it and print a free shipping label. After your trade-in is inspected and accepted, you'll receive a check and a discount offer from the online Kodak store. It's as easy as that and, rest assured, trade-in's will be handled responsibly by Smash Direct, Kodak's partner for this program. Reuse is a great way to extend the life of a product as well as a great way for you to contribute to sustainability. Taking care of our environment for future generations and ourselves is a responsibility for all of us.

Some older products may not have any resale value, so if that is the case with one or more of your products, recycling options will be provided. Kodak will recycle for free Kodak branded products and you pay for the shipping to the recycling center. For all Kodak and non Kodak branded products you will be directed to Earth911 which provides information on recycling centers for various types of products and materials by using a zip code search. Many of the recycling options are free of charge and allow you to take advantage of local recycling opportunities. I encourage you to also take advantage of local municipality electronic waste recycling events as another way to safely and responsibly dispose of electronic products you no longer use. I like the variety of options!

New options for recycling are emerging all the time, so keep in touch with us at our Global Sustainability site and visit our online HSE Support Center whenever you have a question.

A traditional definition of sustainability is meeting society's present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. I feel good about actions that lead to reuse and recycling and help me be more sustainable in my life.

How does an image sensor work and what are the differences between CCD, CMOS, and BSI CMOS technologies?

You probably know that digital cameras use image sensors to capture your pictures, but you may not know much about the different types of sensors and what effect they have on your photos. Up until now, most Kodak cameras have used Charge Coupled Device (CCD), sensors.

However, the new KODAK EASYSHARE MAX uses what's called a Backside Illuminated Complimentary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (BSI CMOS) sensor. Both CCD and CMOS sensors can have excellent image quality, and neither one is inherently 'better' than the other. Different sensors are well suited for certain applications, so this post will focus on some of the differences between these two sensor technologies and what advantages CMOS sensors have in the KODAK EASYSHARE MAX camera.

An image sensor contains a grid of light-sensitive picture elements, or pixels. Light is focused by a lens onto the surface of the image sensor where the image is formed as the light strikes the pixels with varying intensity. Within each pixel, there is a structure, not unlike a bucket, that is specifically designed to convert the light, or photons, into an electric charge and collect that charge until it is time to measure the signal. Both CCD and CMOS image sensors perform this same fundamental process of converting light into an electronic signal. However, they differ in how they measure and transfer this signal.

In a CCD, the charge from each pixel must be transported to a single structure that converts the charge into a voltage that can be measured. This is done by shifting the charge in each pixel to the next, row by row and then column by column, in a bucket brigade type motion, until it reaches the measurement structure. To visualize this, imagine a classroom of students, sitting in rows and columns, they must pass their papers forward and across to the teacher for grading. A CMOS sensor, by contrast, can give us a direct reading by placing a measurement structure at each pixel location. A grid of wires inside the CMOS image sensor allows the measurement result to be transferred from each location to the output of the sensor. This would be the equivalent of each student grading his or her own paper.

Because CMOS sensors can directly measure and report the signal at each pixel location, they can operate much faster than CCDs, enabling special features such as HD Video and high speed burst photography modes. CMOS image sensors also have lower power consumption than CCDs, meaning that the camera can use simpler and smaller power supplies which help it stay cooler and conserve battery power.

To take high quality pictures in low light or with a long zoom such as the 30x KODAK EASYSHARE MAX, it is important for the image sensor to be very sensitive to light. Compared to CCD sensors, one of the drawbacks of traditional CMOS sensors is that the grid of wires that makes the sensor work reduces the amount of light that actually hits the sensor. This is because the wires are built right above the light collecting areas of the pixels. You can think of it like sunlight hitting the ground in a big city; the sun must be at just the right angle or the tall skyscrapers will block the light and cast a shadow on the ground. Much of the sunlight never actually reaches the ground. The solution to this problem is to essentially flip the sensor over so that what is traditionally thought of as the backside now faces up and can be used as the light collecting area. The wires are no longer in the way and therefore do not block the light, making the backside illuminated CMOS sensor significantly more sensitive to light.

CMOS sensors have been known to exhibit a 'jelly' effect, or a wobble due to the way that these sensors operate when recording video. CCD's, on the other hand, often suffer from smear, or bright columns, when there is a very bright light source, such as the sun or a lamp, visible in the scene. CMOS sensors do not have the problem of smear and, because they can operate faster, they can use faster frame rates that can sometimes mitigate the 'jelly' effect.

Because of its increased sensitivity, the backside illuminated CMOS sensor allows us to take higher quality pictures in low light, better pictures with a long zoom, and helps produce better quality HD video with less 'jelly' effects than a traditional CMOS sensor. With faster operation than CCD image sensors, the CMOS sensor makes it is possible to enable high-speed burst photo modes. And, with better battery life, there are clear advantages to using the backside illuminated CMOS sensor in the new KODAK EASYSHARE MAX camera.

Eastman Business Park was once again a sponsor and participant at the Eyes on the Future Summit held at St. John Fisher College on May 20.

The event was attended by approximately 900 people from various aspects of our area businesses, and it provided another great opportunity to share the vision and success so far at Eastman Business Park.

The event was also an opportunity to provide information on the fairly new efforts of the Innovation and Materials Science Institute (IMSI), which is national consortium of business, government and academic leaders (to include Kodak) interested in helping companies move from innovation to commercialization.

There was a great amount of interest in what we had to share about Eastman Business Park (EBP), and based on the conversations that took place, it was reassuring that we have made great progress in our communications and advertisement about all the great things EBP has to offer. When we last did this event a year and a half ago, people were not familiar with our name change, let alone what we were trying to do. This time, several people commented that they had read about what we are doing, and are in full support and as excited as we are.

As part of the event there was a panel discussion with a focus on innovation this year, and our FPEG leader Brad Kruchten was one of five panel participants. The other panel members included representation from Forbes Magazine, Brookings Institute, SUNY Colleges, and a venture capital firm. Eastman Business Park and IMSI both were mentioned during the course of the panel discussion which was great added exposure for us.

Overall it was a successful event that provided EBP with another opportunity to "get the word out" on all the exciting things happening here. We look forward to more events like this to continue to share our story and promote new business.

Father's Day is the best time of year for our Kodak Pulse digital frame

With Father's Day just around the corner, I begin to speculate that my father may not only have all the corniest jokes and all the strangest styles, but he may very well have every gadget and gismo out there; even though he doesn't know how to use half of them. His overabundance leads me to a pitfall when looking for a Father's Day gift: and there is plenty of sibling rivalry motivating me to make sure this year's gift blows him away. Anybody that knows my Dad knows his favorite past time is cooking. In fact, cooking for his family and taking pictures has always been his passion. Every family event, every holiday, and every football game my nephew's ever played are documented through pictures. It's always pretty safe to get Dad a framed picture to reminisce on, but I hate to have one more reminder of that horrible bowl cut of my youth staring at me over the mantel. So, this year, I've decided to get my first and favorite choice - the Kodak Pulse digital frame.

I'm convinced this is the perfect compromise between sentimental and family friendly. The reasons why I picked this as my Dad's Father's Day gift is, it connects everyone. My brother, nephews, neighbors, family & friends can all send new pictures to the frame – wirelessly, from anywhere around the world (with email, mobile phones, or Facebook). And the set up is so simple, Dad won't even get a chance to hover over my shoulder to make sure I'm doing it right. It's energy efficient with a built-in activity sensor that senses motion as soon as he walks into the room (being on a fixed income – that's the best part of all). And as an added bonus, my mom will get to enjoy it too. Now, all I have to do is convince him to set-up a Facebook account so we can begin to share all those crazy pictures too. Or maybe not!?

All Dads Want a Never-Ending Stream of Personal Pictures

Like many of you, each year I struggle to find the perfect Father's Day gift for my Dad. He has just about everything he ever wanted or needed, even a vast collection of things that he never wanted or needed. And most of the things that I had given him in the past ended up in the latter category. Last year I was determined to get him a gift that he would use all year round, and think of me each time he used it. My selection criterion was based on uniqueness, usefulness, and ability to be personalized. Additionally, he is getting up there in years so it had to be simple for him to use and enjoy.

It didn't take me long find exactly the right gift. Rather than giving him a gadget that would end up in the bottom of a closet, I decided to give him a never ending steam of interesting pictures from his family and friends that he could enjoy every day! This was the Kodak Pulse Digital Frame, of course. What Dad wouldn't love seeing new pictures of the kids, grandkids, and family events on a daily basis?

Now here is the part where I need to come clean. Yes, this was a gift for Dad. But, Dad's Kodak Pulse was just as much a gift to my brother, my sister, and me as it was to him. Prior to Dad's Pulse, it was very problematic for the family to share pictures with him. We all live in different cities, so sharing pictures with an older out-of-town relative was no simple task. We each fumbled trying to update the memory card in his existing frame whenever we visited him. We sent pictures to his email but often times they were accidentally deleted, and he could never figure out how to get them from his email to his old frame.

Fast forward to now. Dad's Pulse is set up in his family room in Syracuse and he constantly enjoys new pictures with absolutely no effort on his part. I manage it for him using the kodakpulse.com website from my family room in Rochester, eliminating the need to manually update it only during visits. It also has its own email address so my brother, my sister, and I email our pictures directly to his frame for him to enjoy. Our kids (his grandkids) send Grandpa pictures directly from their phones – a special treat that he loves! I also connected it to some of our relative's Facebook albums so he now enjoys pictures from the extended family that he would have never seen in the past.

If your Dad loves family pictures as much as my Dad does, do yourself (and your siblings) a favor and consider surprising him with a Kodak Pulse for a real Father's Day treat.

I want to get a Kodak Pulse frame as a gift for my parents, but they don't have WiFi – what do I do?

I've talked to many people about the Pulse frame over the last year, and nearly everyone instantly realizes how great it can be for sharing pictures with family members who live far away. I remember when my kids were young – it seemed like every day something special happened – first crawl, first steps, first swing set, first dress, etc. Back then we had film and snail mail, so those firsts got shared much differently!

Here's a picture of my kids from a few years ago that today would go out on the wire instantly, including to my parents' Pulse frame.

Trouble is, not everyone has WiFi installed at home. Your favorite mobile phone company, or TV provider probably has a solution. In the US, Verizon, Sprint and AT&T all offer portable hotspots that use the cell phone network to create a hotspot. This may be a solution that works for folks who don't mind spending $25-50 a month on a service.

There may be a simpler, cheaper way though. According to our some feedback from people who've bought the Pulse Digital Frame, your parents' neighbors might be willing to share their WiFi connection with them. A quick scan of available WiFi networks in my suburban Rochester, NY neighborhood shows 5-6 available networks with reasonable signal strength.

So here's what you can do: next time you are home visiting the folks, use your laptop or smart phone to see if there is a signal strong enough – most of the time people will name their home networks with a name that will clue you into who owns them. If your relationship with the neighbors is close, you probably wouldn't mind asking them if they would be willing to share their WiFi network with your parents. The Pulse frame won't use much bandwidth: it polls roughly once every fifteen minutes and only transfers pictures when new ones arrive. Unless you are in the habit of sending thousands of new pictures out to the world every day, your WiFi hosts won't even notice the difference. (You will most likely need access to their WiFi passcode. Once you have this code, setting up a Pulse frame is quite simple using the touch screen keyboard. You can check out some of our product videos here to see how it works.)

Let me know what you think of this idea? Would you ever consider it? Would you share your WiFi network with a neighbor if they asked? Or do you cringe at the thought?

At Kodak, we have strong connections to our products, but our hope is to keep people connected by sharing their memories. As employees we often get a chance to try-out products, or learn about them, but we don't always buy every single product because there are so many great Kodak options. But our unique Pulse Digital Frame has people sharing and buying, in and out of Kodak. So, here are some testimonials from people who work with and at Kodak and what they've done with their Pulse Digital Frame:

"My parents moved to North Carolina this past summer, so I bought them a Pulse Digital Frame to stay connected. My family and I have been sending them pictures from our phones, email, and linked up their Pulse Digital Frame to Facebook, and they love it!"
-Ashley Fantigrossi, Assistant Product Marketing Manager, Kodak

"I bought this frame for my Mom whose is 81 yrs. old. She loves being able to see instantly all the photos posted to Facebook and Kodak Gallery without having to go to her computer."
-Liz Donaldson, World Wide Web Developer, Kodak

"I bought my mom a Pulse frame for Mother's Day. She said it was one of the best gifts she's ever received. Both Mom and Dad get a kick out of watching new pictures pop up on the frame every week. It's an easy way for me to send them a little surprise to show I'm thinking of them, and it keeps our family connected through pictures."
-Michael Chatfield, Kodak Advertising & Account Planner Partners + Napier

"My parents live in India and were missing out on all the beautiful moments of their grand daughter's life. I was thrilled when we launched the Pulse Frame and immediately got one for them and sent it over. They now wake up to a new photo of their super spoilt diva practically every day. The frame has also become their brag book that gets shown off to all the relatives and friends - a super handy collection of pictures of their daughter and granddaughter living half way across the world."
- Shruti Goradia, Community Manager/Tips & Projects Exchange

After hearing me rave about this camera, my Aunt Kris had to run out and get one. You see, one of Aunt Kris' life goals is to win a Pulitzer Prize for capturing a rare moment in time, and the Mini is so small she could take it anywhere and better her chances of capturing her special prize-winning moment. In the meantime, I think she'll settle for capturing a rare quiet moment of her very active 2-year old grand-nephew (shown below).

My son after spending the day with his Grandma and
Great Aunt Kris; shared to my email via the Share Button.

This camera may be small in size, but not in features. It boasts a 28mm wide 3X optical zoom lens. It can shoot in video, Smart Capture, and 16 image enhancing scene modes – great for every shooting situation. You can even edit the picture right on the camera – crop, change color (black and white, sepia, or vivid), or create action stills from video. Of course you will want to share these images, and we make it easy with the Share Button where you can select Facebook, YouTube, email and more right on the camera to be sent when you connect the camera to your computer.

You can purchase the new EasyShare Mini at our Kodak store, but for a limited time our Mini camera, and HD video camera, is on sale for $89.95, through 5/22/11.
Check out these fun little cameras here.

After trying a Kodak All-in-One Inkjet Printer she was impressed with four things.

Setup, it's quick and quieter, intuitive and low ink replacement cost.

"Finally, Kodak offers the lowest total ink replacement cost with a high quality alternative to high-priced ink. Standard black ink for $9.99 people!!!

All of this means that my daughter can continue to create Show and Tell masterpieces like this, and I won't be pulling out my hair or taking out a second mortgage for the ink cartridges!"

She also thought the Kodak Pic Flick App was cool.

"Also terribly cool? The Kodak Pic Flick App for photo printing from my iPhone. I'm picturing entire scrapbooks full of my Instagram and Diptic self-portraits!"

Read more about what Jennifer thought about her Kodak All-in-One Inkjet Printer
