Industrial Lace Fence

Lace has so many uses in fashion, home decor, religion, sleepwear and lingerie. I have never seen it used as a fence and I love it.

The Dutch design firm Demakersvan was challenged by the University of Philadelphia’s Design Center, in 2009, to create fencing based on their collection of historic Quaker lace.

Philadelphia was the largest American lace producers through the 1930’s. Quaker lace was machine loomed and became a product for the middle classes.

The challenge was to use the original lace design drawings and transform them. One of the design firm owners even took lace making classes to better understand the mechanics of the craft.
This was the outcome.

It now houses the center itself. The fence is 6’ tall and 160’ long. It wraps around the drive way leading to the center. Cars are known to pull up and stop to admire the fence.

Demakersvan states it clearly, “Like brambles fences are rising rampantly around us. What would happen if a patch of embroidered wire would meet with and continue as an industrial fence? Hostility versus kindness, industrial versus craft.”

From this idea came a unique and charming way to contain the many protected spaces in our cities today. I hope we see this spread in the future.

Lace has been a fascination for centuries. It’s detail and beauty still enchant us. Lace is now available to all but was in history for the rich and luxurious only. These historic philosophies are ingrained somewhere in our minds. We all recognize lace as a finery and a special item to be cherished.

The lace chain link fence shows how a detailed, old fashioned item can be placed in use today with a gentle effect. All it takes is determination and design ability. I love it!

Advice from Christian Dior

Lingerie must be very refined…..Our mothers used to spend a lot of time and money on lingerie and I think they were right.
Real elegance is everywhere, especially in things that don’t show….. Lovely lingerie is the basis of good dressing.

Christian Dior changed the shape of clothing for woman in the 1950’s. He presented the “New Look” that took fashion by storm. We hear lots of talk about the great changes this made to woman’s fashion of the time. We do not hear about the great changes it also made to the undergarments of the time. As fashions change so do the undergarments that shape the look.

To support this new look Dior even had a line of undergarments created that also became a massive hit.

I have always admired Dior Fashions as they are so feminine and truly elegant.

His quote struck me as good advice for today. We still need to give attention to what does not show. It is a way to pamper ourselves, treat ourselves and give shape to the outfit we are wearing.

Just a thought as we make our way through September, the month of new fashions and trends.

Marilyn Monroe Sculpture shows her Granny Panties

A massive sculpture of Marilyn Monroe has been unveiled in Chicago’s Pioneer Court.

The public is expressing mixed feelings. I am a huge fan of sculpture and feel that a city is greatly enhanced by public displays of sculpture.

A local real estate office has commissioned the sculpture 'Forever Marilyn', from New Jersey artist Seward Johnson His sculptures of people are commonly seen in gardens and parks. The sculpture stands 26 feet tall and weighs 34,000 pounds.

The sculpture commemorates Marilyn in here iconic role in “Seven Year Itch”. Everyone is familiar with the famous scene of Marilyn straddling a steam vent in her famous white halter dress. The scene created quite a stir at the time and probably a little scandal as well. Although it was a “slightly” suggestive scene, not much of Marilyn is actually shown.

As a society today we are so used to the shocking that very little becomes scandalous. Although Marilyn is a sex symbol she was very innocent by the standards of today.

I am NOT a fan of this sculpture. Because Marilyn was a star in a more modest era, I think she should be commemorated with a bit more respect than this.

The first thing you will see of this iconic beauty are her huge granny panties. How many sex symbols today wear full panty briefs?

Tourists and locals all seem to be enjoying the opportunity to look up Marilyn’s skirt while having their picture taken.

Vintage Lingerie Pin Ups an Advertising Trend

I love the charm of the old fashioned styles of the 40’s and 50’s. The vintage pin up girls are illustrated so beautifully. There is such an innocence to them.

Lately I am seeing them everywhere. There seems to be a trend towards using these retro style images to sell many products. I guess these go naturally with alcohol but I have seen some surprising items as well. I must admit I bought these wagon wheels just because of the cover. Wagon wheels were always a huge treat as a child and I loved them. Did they always taste like that?

Barbera, Italian wine, has an attractive pin up gal with a distinctly Sofia Lauren style. The garters and stockings showing under the flirty dress says it all. Not a great deal of skin showing but such a provocative look. Love the matching shoes!

I was creating an Italian meal and had to have the wine with dinner. I had never bought it before but it just completed the table decor.

Red Rider Beer is sporting a fast paced red head on a gorgeous red beach cruiser. Again we see the garter accidentally showing. Red always catches the eye.

You would think this advertising is intended to sell product to men but it is working on me. I have such a soft spot for this era in lingerie, fashion, design and artwork.

Our world has become so high tech that a little glimpse into the simpler life is a treat. I find myself buying for the images. I guess the advertising is working…

Liz makes a slip the STAR...

Hollywood has lost one of it’s most shinning stars. I watched the life in review as the world said goodbye to Elizabeth Taylor.

I have always been a Liz Taylor fan and always will be.

Cat On A Hot Tin Roof is one of my all time favorite films. I am a fan of Tennessee Williams plays so when you add Liz Taylor and a stellar cast of actors you have a master piece.

I love how Liz turned an old fashioned full slip into a star!

Liz plays a strong woman, named Maggie the cat, who tries to win back the affections of her aloof husband.
Set in the steamy climate of the deep south Maggie spends the majority of the movie wearing only a full slip.

But this is no ordinary slip.

Liz Taylor looked glamorous while exquisitely undressed in that famous full slip.
This slip not only became the star of the show but also the image or icon of the show itself. It is incredible when a costume portrays the character so completely. It has become just as famous as the actress.

The costume designer, Helen Rose, created the ultimate slip for Elizabeth during production in 1958. This was a full slip made of pure silk, completely lined in silk to guarantee nothing would show through. The slip was perfectly fitted and skin tight. If you watch the film carefully you can see the invisible hidden zipper on the side seam. You may also notice she does not wear a bra.

Silk moulds and moves with a body like no other fabric can. This slip looks like a regular slip but it was created with the magic of movie costuming skill. Yes it is a slip but it has that extra star power.

No one else wears a slip that looks quite as commanding.

In 1960 Liz does it again! Another outstanding slip for the star of Butterfield 8. Once again Helen Rose created the slip but this time with a splash of contrasting lace in a warm coffee color showing 2 layers at the hem.

The sensual silk, the body hugging fit and fully lined to show Liz at her best.

Check out this clip to really see the dramatic slip in action (3 1/2 mins). This slip is powerful and sexy yet so little skin is shown by todays standards.

The slip has moved away from popularity. This is a shame because there is something magical about wearing a slip. Your clothing slides and moves easily on top of it. If your clothing shifts and the slip shows, what a wonderful surprise for the onlooker who happens to notice!

If you want to feel like a 1950’s movie start….pull on a slip one morning and walk tall. See how glamorous you will feel.

There will never be another Liz Taylor. In her honor I vote to bring the slip back into vogue! How about you?

International Women's Day turns 100

Happy 100th International Women's Day

For many reasons I find this day to be a somber one. In my world little attention is paid to this day. I am fortunate to be living in a part of the world where women have rights and privileges.

On this day I always think about my life over the years. I think about my successes, my family, my happiness and the hardships I have overcome. I think about what may have been, the choices I have made and the things I have had no choice in.

I am saddened by the vulnerability of women in so many parts of the world. Over the past 100 years many things have changed for women yet in so many places nothing has changed at all.

International Women"s Day was started by Clara Zetkin in 1910 in Germany. She wanted one day to be recognized world wide to highlight the demands of women. She was a political activist in the European Socialist Movement. Her idea continues and is even an official holiday in some countries.

I like to think I can help in some way. My favorite project is with Kiva. This is a place to lend money to struggling business people in developing countries. I choose women. I love computers for their ability to give us the most up to date information in our fast changing world. I hate computers for the constant changes they require.

Blogging along with the old background.

I have enjoyed the look of my blog as it has evolved over the past year, however, the lovely people that designed my background and allowed me to publish it, have scraped it. Could I have been the only one who loved it?

As it is no longer available to me I am left with a blank blog background. Now how dull is that?

This blog may change again but for now let me explain my "new look" choices.

As you have probably noticed, I like bold color and patterns. I like things that jump out at you.

The deep red velvet pattern is strong and regal. It creates a slightly retro, luxurious, old world feel. It could be the wall coverings from a magnificent hotel from the past or a sensational silk velvet smoking jacket. I want to reach out and touch it.

I am captivated by deep rich reds. They really make a statement. I think of royalty, richness, passion, anger, danger, red carpet divas and historic elegance.

I am a busy person so my eye is drawn to complicated patterns. Is my look too busy?.

The British used car company Carmony.co.uk recently conducted a survey of their customers. They were surprised by how open and detailed the customers were with their answers. The answers were quite a surprise as well…
They asked British drivers about their driving habits, preferences and most other “car” questions you would expect.
Then came the unexpected questions and the crazy answers that followed. Here are some highlights of the results.

27% of female BMW drivers wear sexy lingerie regularly
22% of female BMW drivers over 45 wear sexy lingerie regularly
50% of female drivers prefer big, comfortable, Bridgette Jones type panties
8% of male BMW drivers go commando
5% of male BMW drivers wear a thong … yes… thongs

The next time I am in London and a BMW wizzes past me, I am going to look twice and wonder ….

Christmas Stockings

“The stockings were hung by the chimney with care in hopes that Saint Nicolas soon would be there.”

A quote from my favorite Christmas story/poem “ The Night Before Christmas”. The story that has been read to me or I have read every year of my life. In truth I know it by heart but I love the old images in the book far too much to miss.

We all love this story and most of us partake in this quaint Christmas tradition of hanging stockings Christmas Eve. In my house on Christmas morning the Christmas stockings are always a wonderful treat.
Have you ever wondered how it all began?

The stockings or hose pictured in this fantastic ancient painting show you the style of the stockings of the day. We will never know for sure but here is the legend behind the Christmas stockings.

It is thought that around 300AD a kindly young bishop began the quest of leaving secret gifts for needy people and disappearing without thanks. His fame grew until he was named Saint Nicolas.

It was common in days of old to leave stocking to dry overnight pinned to the hearth.

A nobleman mourning the loss of his wife was said to have thrown away his fortune leaving his 3 daughters without a dowry and thus unable to marry. When the generous Saint Nicolas heard of the girls’ predicament, he rode his white horse past their house, in the dead of night on Christmas Eve and tossed little pouches of gold coins into the chimney. By chance they fell into the stockings hung to dry and were found Christmas morning.

Thus began the Christmas Stocking tradition. The legend of Saint Nicolas made it’s way to Holland where he became Sinterklaas leaving treats in wooden shoes. Eventually the legend hit North America where he became Santa Claus filling stockings with presents.

A Short History of Corset Making

Exploring the Corset – Day 5

Corset making in centuries past, was serious business. Corset or stay making was considered heavy work and therefore not appropriate for women. All corsets were made by men/tailors. Tailoring was also a heavy job, the “pressing” was considered too difficult a task for a woman.
France imposed many restrictions on fashion and trade. A couturier, a female dressmaker, was not allowed to make a corset. Eventually, around the end of the 18th century, the restrictions were lighten and women were given the rights to produce corsets.

The construction of a corset is fascinating. Originally they were made from many layers of fabric. Most often linen, cotton and silk. The base fabric needed to be a very dense weave so that there was no stretch or give in the fabric.

The fabric was covered in a paste that stiffened it further. The corset was then hand stitched in small channels over the entire body. Whalebone was then slipped into all the channels. You can see the stiffened rows on the pink corset shown here.

The whalebone was actually Baleen. It is not a bone but cartilage like strings from the roof of the whale’s mouth. One of the heaviest jobs was cutting the Baleen to fit and forcing it into the channels.

The edges of the corset were encased in silk ribbon and the eyelets for the laces were hand stitched in silk thread. Metal grommets for eyelets were not invented for years to come.

To make a corset was labor intensive and a work of art when completed.

Today is my blog’s first birthday. I am thrilled to have arrived at this day.
When I began this project, I was so overwhelmed with the prospect of writing a blog about underwear only. My first thoughts were, “How on earth will I find enough to talk about?” Obviously that has not been a problem. I now have more to write about than time to write it.
This project has proven to be a source of enjoyment and fun for me. I love the research, the passing on of information, the interacting with great people, and spending time taking photographs.

Full Moon in Paris

There has been a noticeable pause at www.PlusSizeBrasAndPanties.blogspot.com .
Let me tell you why……I have been in Paris.

I have been away from my laptop and missing the comfort of being connected. I have, however, been in Fashion Overload. ….. How perfect!

A trip to Paris is an adventure in fashion and beauty. I am charmed by all the wonderful, tiny details that abound in the city of lights. Life unfolds as a slow ritual unchanged by the years.

Difficult as it is I am back to life as I know it. I said goodbye to ancient cobblestone streets, red and white street cafes, priceless master pieces, champagne at lunch and haute couture window shopping.

So sad!

A Fashionista to Admire for a Lifetime

One of my first and strongest childhood fashion memories includes me lying in the middle of the our street refusing to get up.

My mother had dressed me and made me leave the house wearing pants with a very small patch on the knee. Although I was extremely young I remember being horrified that I would be forced to wear such unfashionable pants.

What was she thinking? What was she subjecting me to? How could my fashionable mother even think I could wear such pants? How could I survive this? I would have to remain on the road until my mother consented to change my clothes.

I really had no concept of fashion yet or did I?

I was born into a family of dressmakers. My mom and her mom before her created clothes for themselves, their family and often friends as well as customers. My mom would whip up wonderful outfits and wear them with flare.

The first fashionista in my life was and still remains my Mom. She graced my childhood in a glamorous, fashionable, fun way. I would watch the process as she chose a style to make, find the perfect fabric and spend the time sewing and fitting the garment. I would sit mesmerized by the hum of the sewing machine. Then the special event would arrive. I would stare as she teased her hair, applied her makeup and finally slipped on the masterpiece. She was beautiful. She inspired me and started me on my fashion path.

I grew up watching my Mom enjoying the changing fashions of the 60’s through to the present. She taught me to sew, to appreciate quality fabrics and construction, to always be in style and to love fashion. She is as beautiful and fashionable today as she was in my first memories.

Happy Mother’s Day to my Fashionista Mom .

A bad hair is in the eye of the beholder.

On the weekend I met this charming young lady named Nina and her beautiful mom. My husband and I had taken a journey to the wonderful Harrison Hot Springs in BC, Canada.

We went to enjoy the healing waters of the natural mineral salts hot springs. It is a wonderful relaxing way to pamper the body and re-energise for the week ahead.

I was fortunate enough to meet Nina with her wild and wonderful hair. Being cursed, myself, with thin, straight hair I was mesmerized by the unruly fashion statement Nina was making.

Mom explained that Nina and Dad had spent the week together while she was in New York shopping with girl friends….lucky her! Nina and Dad had a great time but avoided the hair brushing chore thus the hair do.

Mom may think it is a bad hair day but I LOVE IT! “Nina, you made my day….

Vancouver 2010 Olympic Fashion Trends

The excitement of the Olympic games has consumed Vancouver. The great excitement and fun of a world class, international event in our town has brought a community together as we welcome the world and show off our home.

The natural beauty of the landscape is a wonderful compliment to the Canadian hospitality. I have been pleasantly surprised by the event and inspired by the enthusiasm from many nations.

I know that fashionistas around the world have their eyes on the runways of New York Fashion Week and the newest high fashion offerings for 2010.

Here in Canada, RED is the prominent fashion color on the streets of the Olympic games. Gorgeous Olympic fans are recreating the latest fashion trends in red and look fantastic doing so. The ultimate in Olympic fashion is a bright red pair of mittens boldly showing a white maple leaf on the palm. Who could forecast the popularity of a little pair of mittens? An old school item previously reserved for children has now become the Olympics’ favorite souvenirs. Even Oprah has joined the red mitten craze.

Fashion retailers are joining in the fun with creative visions of fashion and sport. A combination not often displayed like a hockey stick emblazoned in rhinestones and hot pink skates matched with designer fashions. Holt Renfrew glams up Canada’s favorite game.

The Hudson’s Bay Department store is the official souvenir dealer. I love their group of display mannequins intently watching the games. Heads not required.

Sports fans, fashionistas, and mannequins are all soaking up the Olympic spirit.

How did Valentine's Day Begin?

Valentine’s Day is like many other holidays we have grown up with and love. It is a tradition we all know about but have no idea where it came from or how it started. The stories of it’s beginning vary and the facts have become blurred over the years. Although we know the Valentine’s Day card tradition is attributed to the Victorian era the origin of this tradition dates much further back.

In Roman times there was a Roman Catholic priest named Valentine. He lived during the rule of Claudius II who passed a law stating that no man may marry. Emperor Claudius II felt single men made far superior soldiers and would do anything to build the strongest army.

Father Valentine was a romantic and believed in the power of love and the sanctity of marriage. He began performing marriage ceremonies in secret. Before long he was arrested, thrown in jail and sentenced to death by beheading.

During his incarceration the jail keeper’s daughter visited him often. Just before his execution day, on February 14, he wrote a farewell letter to her and signed it “from Your Valentine” . Rumor of this letter spread and became the symbol of selfless, romantic love. This is thought to now be the first Valentine Card sent. He was put to death on the day that has become our celebration as Valentine’s Day, February 14th. Father Valentine was decreed “Patron Saint of Lovers.”

How strange it is that this lovely, warm and fuzzy, romantic holiday sprang from such a gruesome act. On February 14th, when you crack open the champagne why not give a little toast to Father Valentine. I think we all share his secret passion for true love.

I Love You Wall in Paris

Paris remains the most romantic city in the world. Paris is such a ruler of this genre that it presents many monuments to love with the majority of them being ancient and awe inspiring.

In Montrmatre, the home of the artists, stands a modern display of love. A wonderful project created by Frédéric Baron who has recorded “I Love You” 1000 times written in 300 langauges and dialects. The script is displayed on a wall in a beautiful park setting. This is fast becoming a meeting spot for lovers

“One does not play with love. It is a serious affair.” by Frédéric Baron.

Baron began his project in 1992 by wandering the streets of Paris and asking people to write these words in their mother tongue. Baron feels he has toured the world without ever leaving Paris.

LE MUR DES JE T'AIME is a wall finished in lava enamelled tiles. Each tile holds it’s own message of love. You will see chips of color spread through the face. This is to symbolize fragments of broken hearts. 612 tiles each in the shape and size of Baron’s original note books present the 1000 I Love Yous.

If you visit Paris you will find the wall in Paris, Buttes Montmartre, Place des Abbesses, in the Square Jehan Rictus. Take the Metro to Abbesses. The admission is free and a great spot for photos.

Bikini Barista

After a full day of shopping during the Christmas rush, with my Mom, we stopped for a coffee at a drive through espresso stand. This is where we happened upon Mandy, the bikini barista for Foxy Lady Espresso Hut. I got such a chuckle from this charming surprise.

Washington State has the best drive through coffee stands and they are everywhere. You can’t go wrong.

Being Moms our concern for Mandy was - aren’t you cold? She guaranteed us that the heat was cranked and she was very comfortable.

Mandy found her cute little Santa mini skirt and hat at Victoria secret. She made us a great Mexican Mocha Latte for the long, cold Christmas commute home.

Thanks Mandy for the Christmas fun.
