The popularity of television shows such as “Dancing with the Stars” and “So You Think You Can Dance?” has led to an explosion in the number of people wanting to learn how to dance. Presenter Howard Smallowitz knows this because, in addition to being an ITIL-certified systems engineer and a PMP-certified project manager for IBM, he is a professional dance instructor.

At first glance, it would seem that these two jobs could not be more different. But hardly a day goes by that he doesn’t learn something from teaching people to dance that could help us all to be better project managers. Dancing is all about leading and following. The rules don't differ much whether you are on a dance floor or a raised floor. The skills dancers spend years cultivating to be better leaders apply directly to project leaders.

Some lessons are obvious:
• Know, in advance, what you want.
• Communicate it unambiguously to your partners.
• Constantly refine your skills.
• Above all, if you're not having fun, it's time to change something.

Some lessons are not so obvious:
• What's your number one job as a leader on the dance floor? (Hint: It’s not leading.).
• Why it is not true that Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did backward in high heels, and what you can learn from it.

Howard will reveal these secrets and many more. So even if you believe you have two left feet, no rhythm, and you retired from dancing the moment you were done with your first dance at your wedding, Howard will show you lessons from the dance floor that will help you to be a better leader and project manager.

PMLL: We're Restarting the PM Best Practice Call With a New Volunteer!

Hello everyone! We're happy to report that we're restarting the PM Best Practice Calls and Podcasts with a new Volunteer! Let's let her introduce herself.

My name is Alicia Colantuono. I am recently married (in June) and I live in Virginia. We are planning to move back to Minnesota in February, which is were I am from originally. I currently work as an airline pilot for ExpressJet Airlines. It has it's good and bad parts as all jobs do but I am still looking for the right job for me and I think Project Management is that job. I am volunteering with PMLL because I have used their podcasts to start studying for my CAPM exam and I think some hands on experience may help give a better idea of what project management is really about.

The Tasks Involved
I've (Henry) have talked with Alicia about the PM Best Practice calls and will be helping her along with getting it going. She'll be selecting speakers, scheduling them for the monthly calls, and introducing them. Our own Dana Safford (who has volunteered for years with his expertise in leading the PMP Exam Study Calls) will be helping with podcasting.

Get Ready For A New PMP Exam Coming in November 2015 - Not Really, It's Yet Another RDS Update.

Most folks studying for the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam are unaware of the framework that lives just below the surface of the exam. This same framework of domains and tasks exists in many other types of situation/scenario-based certification exams.

By considering the very recent changes and trends in the PM profession, the Project Management Institute (PMI) likes to keep their exams current. They respin the exam every few years. It’s easy to do the respin when the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK), that is the basis for the exam, changes every four to five years (the next PMBOK update will occur in 2017). But what happens in between (like now)? The PMI calls this respin a Role Delineation Study (RDS) change. Without changing the underlying PMBOK edition-base of the PMP exam, they keep the exam current. In a nutshell, it’s nothing more than changing the mix of the scenarios. The changed domains and tasks are actually part of the scenarios.

As I mentioned, the scenarios in the exam relate to a specific task-based situation that a PM could run into in the real world. Those scenarios outline something going on in one or more of the five Process Groups (PGs); Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring & Controlling, and Closing. These are the domains of the exam.

Each of the many exam scenarios, requires you to figure-out what needs to happen to answer the questions that come after the scenario. That ‘what needs to happen’ part is/are the task(s) associated with the specific domain in the scenario’s premise. There is a science involved in each of those scenarios. For example, the set of activities involved in something like:

Participate in the development of the project charter by compiling and analyzing gathered information in order to ensure that project stakeholders are in agreement on its elements.

is considered a specific task that an exam aspirant should know how to accomplish.

Each domain contains many tasks. All of those tasks are put together to build the scenarios and the questions in the exam.

They also changed the domain mix (the number of scenarios/questions from each domain) by a single percentage point; taking from Executing and adding to Closing.

So that’s all there is to it. They just take tasks that any exam aspirant should know anyway and mix them up a little differently. See http://www.pmi.org/~/media/PDF/Certifications/pmp-certification-exam-outline.ashx for the actual list of the changes. There is no significantly new knowledge. They make it sound like there is, but when you really look at the ‘cross-cutting knowledge and skills’ required for the new tasks, there is really nothing new that you will be questioned on. Those skill are listed in the PMI page cited just above here. Once you read it you’ll agree there is nothing you will not already know. The Fifth Edition of the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge will remain the base of the PMP exam for another couple years.

The revised exam transitions in November 2015. If you were to compare a pre-RDS exam and a post-RDS exam, you would not be able to find the differences. So, don’t sweat that cut-over date.

PM Lessons Learned Monthly PMP Exam Study Group: Podcasts for the 47 PMBOK 5e Processes

Welcome back to the PMLL Blog!

With the posting of PMLL podcast #170, we find ourselves at the end of the 47 processes that constitute the primary content within the Fifth Edition (5e) of the Guide to the Project Management Body Of Knowledge (PMBOK). So, it makes sense to provide you with an initial list of all the PM Lessons Learned Podcasts that you need to study for the "Processes" portion of the Project Management Professional (PMP) Exam.

Remember, that on 31 JUL 2013, the basis of the PMP exam changed to the Fifth Edition (5e) of the PMBOK. There are 47 processes that you need to know. The list below provides pointers to the PMLL podcasts and the slides that we've been slowly working through; one hour at a time. You can also find the podcast on iTunes. However, iTunes does not provide you with the corresponding slides for each podcast. So download the slides along with the podcasts on each of the links to archive.org in the list below or go to the Monthly PMP Exam Call File area in the PMLessonsLearned Group in Yahoo Groups and download the slides.

Thanks to all of you that hung in there for this portion of the PMLL PMBOK 5e podcasts to finish. This content changed significantly from earlier editions. So be very careful that you know the source of your study material.

I noticed that many of you are still downloading PMLL PMP Study Group material from earlier editions of the PMBOK. The Fifth Edition material is all you need! Downloading the Fourth Edition and Third Edition material will only confuse you.

At this writing, you can safely ignore PMLL PMPExamPrep Podcasts #147 and below. There are a few podcasts below #147 that I will update with the very minor changes that will bring them up-to-date for the Fifth Edition.

Remember, the Internet is a big place. If you choose to use study material from another source, make sure you know its PMBOK base. Now that July 31, 2013 is behind us, you should only use material based on PMBOK Fifth Edition. For PMLL, that's podcast number 148 and above. You should remember, there’s roughly about a 50 % difference from the Fourth Edition to the Fifth Edition and it’s mostly in the knowledge groups, the processes, and their ITTOs. There are still evil people out there that will sell you material from the Fourth and even Third Editions of the PMBOK. If the material or website doesn’t explicitly say its material is based on the Fifth Edition, leave it alone. Please, be careful out there.

Sad News: Barbara Fuller

It is with a heavy heart that we are sorry to report the passing of one of the founding members of our PMlessonsLearned.com group. Barbara Fuller passed away this past Monday, January 5,2015. On the "About PMlessonsLearned" page on our website, you will see her listed as one of our founding members. You'll also see the many PMlessonsLearned.com conference calls that she participated in (and the podcasts). We've listed several of them below.

Henry Will, founder of our group, has the following to say about Barbara,
"Barbara was an inspiration to me in establishing the PMLL group. Not only did she support me, she also contributed wholeheartedly to the initial work to make the group become a reality. Barbara also gave her input to continually improve our group. I also volunteered with her in the local PMI New Jersey chapter. At one point, I suggested and initiated work for a Project Management Cruise for the New Jersey Chapter. The goal was for Project Managers to learn how to improve their professional work in a fun, relaxing, and social setting. Due to my other commitments, I wasn't able to do the work to make it happen. Barbara showed up to some initial meetings, took the lead, and made it happen. She was also a fellow Christian believer which brought us even closer. She will be sorely missed. I know she's in a better place due to her faith."

Several PMlessonsLearned.com members have already expressed their sadness at the loss. We take this time to memorialize the vibrant life of Barbara Fuller.

PMLL Podcasts Will Be Coming Faster

Hello,

Many of you are aware that we have been slowly working our way through the 47 processes that make up the bulk of the Project Management Body of Knowledge or PMBOK.

Our goal was to start with the Knowledge Areas with the most change and work ur way to the Knowledge Areas with the least change. We are there now. In the PMBOK Fifth Edition, the Project Risk Management and Project Integration Management Knowledge Areas contain the smallest amounts of new information. That's why we are doing them last. More than half of the content in PMLL podcasts 167 and 168 is not new (covering the Project Risk Management Knowledge Area).

I'm hearing from many of you that you'll be sitting for the PMP exam in the first few months of 2015, So rather than make you wait until April 2015 for me to finish all 47 processes, we decided make things happen quicker.

We will forego the live PMLL Lessons Learned Monthly PMP Exam Study Groups calls.
I recorded the new portions of the Project Risk Management Knowledge Area and tonight released PMLL podcast #168 just two weeks behind PMLL Podcast #167 (and without a live conference call).

I'll start the same for the Project Integration Management Knowledge Area and release those podcasts during January 2015 (also without live conference calls).

I'll schedule the next live conference call for 5 FEB 2015. Instead of drowning you in fast talking presentations, we'll do it as a Question & Answer session on any of the material in the PMBOK.

So, I hope this will help everyone prepare that much faster.

On July 31st 2013, the Fifth Edition of the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge, also called the PMBOK Guide, became the basis for the Project Management Professional or PMP exam. This month’s PMP Study Group call continues the deep-dive into the changed portions of the PMBOK Fifth Edition or 5e. In this session, we will begin the focus on the Project Human Resource Management knowledge area, as we look at three of the four processes that belong to the Project Human Resource Management knowledge area as laid out in the Fifth edition. Dana Safford, PMP, will provide insight and practical examples of everything you need to know to build your critical knowledge mass and pass the PMP exam on the first attempt.

Hi There,

Well, it took a while, but we finally figured out why our podcasts were not posting to iTunes. iTunes now contains all the PMBOK Fifth Edition podcasts (numbers 146 through 160).

To make-up for the delay, I'll tell you that a few of the older podcasts that contain material that is still valid for the PMBOK Fifth Edition.
While we created these podcasts for an earlier version of the Project Management Book of Knowledge (PMBoK), the concepts and all of the content are still valid for the PMBOK fifth edition.

Using each of the urls below, you can either listen to the podcast on the Internet Archive or scroll to the bottom-right of the page and right-click the .mp3 file to down load it.
