Someone broke into one of our cars recently….
It was parked under the carport – in our own front yard – so this wasn’t exactly Ocean’s Eleven, more like someone had a quiet rummage at 2am and helped themselves to some loose change and a pair of sunnies.
Annoying? Yes. Worth losing sleep over? Probably not.

But then we remembered the spare house key.
Unmarked. Just a key, sitting in the centre console – the kind of thing that’s been there so long it stops registering as a thing. And suddenly, “someone went through the car” became a more interesting concept.

So we changed the house locks. All of them. Added lighting under the carport. Had a look around at what else might quietly need attention.

More effort than the original incident warranted? Arguably. But the net result is that we’re now in a considerably more secure position than we were before someone decided our Honda looked interesting.

Full ‘Maintenance Pete’ mode

The past several weeks have been what I’d diplomatically describe as eventful.
Two separate – but equally unwelcome situations have been keeping us busy across a number of client accounts.

The first involves domain registries. The organisations that oversee who officially owns a web address have significantly tightened their compliance requirements.

They’re now actively cross-checking that the business details on domain registrations match current, legitimate trading entities – correct ABN, correct trading name, correct contact information. In one instance, a domain was suspended because updated documentation didn’t arrive in time!!

The second is a noticeable uptick in sophisticated hacking attempts. And not just the “someone gained access via a dodgy website plugin” variety. Some attacks are now targeting hosting environments directly – which is a different level of problem than most website owners have needed to be concerned about.

In both cases, the vulnerability wasn’t obvious. It was just quietly sitting there – like an unmarked key in a car.

What we’re doing about it:

We’re working through our client list progressively to offer an optional review of their situation.

No drama, just a practical once-over that covers a few areas:
Domain registration health. Making sure the right ABN, trading name, and contact details are actually on record. It’s the kind of admin that’s easy to let drift, and the consequences of doing so – have recently become a lot more concrete.

An added layer of website security. We’re able to install automatic daily scans for malicious files and unusual activity, plus extended backup retention – so that if something does go wrong, we can restore a site further back in time than the standard setup typically allows.

And while we’re in there, we’re using it as a prompt to have a quick look at whether there are any content improvements or outstanding website items worth picking up at the same time.

There’s a term for this in marketing circles: identifying your better way.

It’s the idea that the most powerful thing a business can communicate isn’t its service list – it’s their point of view. A clear, honest perspective on how things are typically done, why that’s a problem, and how your approach addresses it.

The businesses that do this well don’t just attract clients. They attract the right clients – people who already feel the problem and are actively looking for someone who gets it.

From a website perspective, the practical implication is straightforward (even if executing it isn’t): your homepage messaging shouldn’t just describe your services. It should stake a position.

That might look like naming a common frustration your clients experience before they find you. Or articulating the standard approach in your industry – and then explaining why you’ve moved beyond it. Or simply being specific enough about who you serve and what you solve that the right people immediately think: that’s exactly me.

   (A simple overview of the transformative outcome you provide)
4. Why should they trust you?
   (Experience, credibility, reassurance)
5. What should they do next?
   (A clear, low-pressure next step)

When websites follow this structure, enquiry quality improves – even without more traffic.

Here’s a simple test you can apply to your own website:

Does you website Home page clearly outline the above 5 aspects ?

If the answer is “not really”, your messaging may be working harder than it needs to.

Your website isn’t a brochure.

It’s a conversation starter.

The businesses that attract better online enquiries don’t need to shout louder or more often – they should just speak more clearly, from the client’s point of view.
