It’s always great to see a series of photographs which tell a story. Whether it’s photojournalism from a war-torn population to a series of fashion looks in an exotic locale, groups of photos with unifying themes make us feel and think differently than a single image can.

Caleb Kenna knows this, and presents a wonderful cross-section of Vermont residents. Known for their free-thinking, tenacity, self-reliance, and Yankee wit, the subjects Kenna has captured are more varied than famous son’s Robert Frost’s time, but are just as at home in the beautiful state they call their own. Here are some of his thoughts on this series.

©Caleb Kenna

Ironically, my portrait series on Vermonters started across the Connecticut River in New Hampshire. I got a great assignment from Dartmouth College to photograph six students for an alumni brochure. A few months before I bought an Einstein 640 flash and Vagabond battery and had been slow putting them to good use. Up until that point I mostly used Nikon Speedlights. I wanted to improve my lighting skills and be able to shoot in a wider variety of situations. I had used PocketWizards and was excited about using multiple lights. The Dartmouth shoots went well and proved a good challenge. I photographed on a narrow balcony atop a library clock tower, inside a dark theater and outside in blowing snow and freezing temperatures. Each time the PocketWizards performed well.

©Caleb Kenna

I have always enjoyed photographing strangers, but would sometimes avoid it because of less than optimal natural light. With my new lighting setup, I could make portraits anytime, creating a consistent and pleasing light combined with whatever ambient light was there. My first Vermonter portraits were made in the middle of frozen Lake Bomoseen on a frigid February day. Lugging my gear across the slippery ice, I set up and hoped the sandbag would prevent my lights from blowing away in the wind. Everything worked! My project was underway! Now it’s spring and I’ve made more portraits of Vermonters. My goal is to capture everyday Vermonters in their natural environments, from farm fields to city streets, young and old, native and new Vermonters, all lighted in a similar way to highlight their collective sense of place and individual personalities.

©Caleb Kenna

This year’s camera body is amazing! It’s your main squeeze, your baby, your precioussssss! What to do with last year’s camera body; Old Black Betty? Occasionally you tote it around as a spare, “just in case something happens.” 99 times out of 100, nothing ever happens. It sits in the bag patiently waiting for you, vibrating the dust off its little sensor joyfully, gleeful at being powered up for maybe the second time this year. It’s making sad little puppy-dog eyes at you right now, actually, but you can’t see it buried among all the spare radios, batteries, and flashes. Poor thing!

Photo ©Chris Valites. Eyes by Steve Miller.

Make it happy and put it to work! At your next wedding or ball game, use it for a little self-serve photo booth. While your customers enthusiastically mash a big red button and take nicely framed and beautifully lit self-portraits, you’re off making artful money shots somewhere else. The masses are entertained and you have one more folder on the DVD you can deliver, or one more line item to offer in your package deals, setting yourself apart as a dynamic photographer.

“Move Your Body!”

Here’s what you need:

A camera body with a remote shutter release terminal. If your camera is listed here, get the correct remote camera cable and it’ll work.

A pair of PocketWizard radios. The PlusX is nice.

Optional: The button! And maybe an extension.

Optional: A backdrop and a flash.

A happy spare camera ready to be used in a self-serve photo booth!

“Body Language”

Mount the camera securely (tripod, Magic Arm, etc.). A wider angle lens might help when folk wander around, or try to cram in a super group.

Set the focus manually so the shot happens quickly. Tape the focus ring in place with gaffer’s tape. Consider using aperture priority (or full manual) and pre-setting the depth of field to cover the target area completely.

Set the scene! A stool and an old back drop can be simple and elegant. Mark the spot where they should stand with some gaffer’s tape.

Set-up the PocketWizard radios: a receiving radio for the camera, and a transmitting radio for the subjects to use. You can be more discrete with a trigger button and hide the transmitter in the set somewhere, like inside an apple box or taped under a stool, and place the button somewhere convenient. Or you can simply use the transmitter to trigger the remote camera by pressing the “TEST” button

Hang a sign under the lens:

Stand on the X and hold the button or transmitting radio behind your back.

Smile!

Press the button!

Profit!

Use lights, or not. It is up to you! PocketWizard radios have a cool Auto-Relay function so you can have remote flashes fire in sync with your remote camera, adding another level of professionalism.

You writers and your words! I need the moving pictures! Click here to jump to the exact moment in Mark Wallace’s PlusX webinar where he explains remote camera and flash with direct applications to self-serve photo booths.

“Nobody knows, the trouble I’ve seen…”

Other things to consider:

Will the batteries last all day? Mount things for easy battery swapping if needed, or consider AC power.

Security. If the booth is where you and others can see it, it may not be a problem. If it’s around the corner, consider a simple lock through the camera strap mount or other quick security system. (or, as our Marketing Director did, bring your kid to manage the photo booth)

Live View! Some cameras have a great live view function, or quick review of the photo. A short HDMI cable to a cheap little LCD makes the booth that much more fun!

Probably ok to shoot in .jpg versus RAW and you’ll fit a lot more images on the CF card.

Hand sanitizer.

“Everybody Dance, Now!”

You’ll get some fun stuff out of this setup. You’ll also get a bored 12-year-old’s stop motion Star Wars re-enactment, but hey, that works for YouTube, right? A quick photo booth takes little effort, and you can have a lot of fun personalizing it. Leave a stack of 11×17 paper and sharpies for folk to write messages to the bride and groom. Print out photos of the bride and groom from their engagement session so people can pose with them. Drape a few plastic pirate props around for the Pirates Little League team to enjoy. And hats. Hats are great!

Read his own account of the execution and find full details of how you can witness this in person below.

©Matt Hill

NIGHT PAPER is a personal project I started dreaming about over five years ago and began executing last July. It’s the combination of long exposures at night and surreal, hand-cut paper fashions. I live for playing with time-dialtion and by introducing portraiture at night, especially when they are only wearing paper, makes for a visually challenging combination of the practices. I’m constantly surprised by how well they blend and continue to evolve together. And, it must be said, all of these images are done in-camera. There are no composites in this series. Also, since this involves tasteful nudity in the context of fine art, you may want the NSFW warning if you are in the wrong place…

I use PocketWizard technology on every NIGHT PAPER shoot. I carry no less than seven units with me – one MiniTT1 and AC3 ZoneController, two FlexTT5 units, and five Plus III units. I use them to trigger both flashes and cameras. It’s the invisible glue holding my ideas together and allows me the freedom to be anywhere in my scene while working out these crazy ideas.

©Matt Hill

My primary light is a Profoto AcuteB with a PocketWizard built-in. I use a Magnum Reflector with a grid – it’s my current favorite main portrait light, even though it’s a real pain in the ass to carry around on location due to the size of the reflector. My second light source is a Nikon SB900 and I use a variety of light modifiers from small softboxes to snoots to booming it up on a long pole. Having this on a FlexTT5 with my AC3 ZoneController on the camera makes it easier for my assistants to not have to adjust power controls in darkness.

My third flash is a trusty old Vivitar 283 with the manual variator dial on the front.

Without flash, this project would indeed be different, and not in a good way. I must arrest the model first before introducing time-bending elements. This may involve more flashing after the initial burst while they move around, moving more light sources through the scene, letting the ambient light “bake in” on moving elements in the scene and more.

Behind the scenes of Matt Hill’s Rockaway shoot. ©Gabriel Biderman

Having a flash trigger that always fires and eliminates annoying cables, and makes my investment in 1-minute to 1-hour exposures worth it. Nothing is worse than standing around for all that time and then discovering something didn’t fire. Compound that with the fact I often shoot with two more cameras simultaneously. My main camera is a Nikon D700, but I also shoot with a Mamiya 7II, LOMO Belair X 6-12 and a Toyo VX125 4×5″ camera. When a film shot doesn’t get a flash, it’s waaay more expensive — both in terms of time wasted and money spent on processing and purchasing the film.

Explaining my process for the paper art is best shown:

Join host Joe Brady as he shows how you can use multiple cameras to get shots that might otherwise be difficult or impossible to get. During this staged wedding ceremony, Joe will show the gear, setup and techniques to capture images from locations where a photographer wouldn’t be allowed during a ceremony in order to photograph unique points of view that can add extra interest in your wedding photography.

He will also set up a second camera along the center aisle with remote flash units to capture multiple points of view – all being controlled from the single camera in his hands. Didn’t think you could be in two places at once? During this free webinar sponsored by PocketWizard, see how you can add multiple cameras to any location shoot and control them wirelessly from practically anywhere. Turn your extra camera into an invisible second shooter!

Based in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Melody Hood has been taking photographs since she was ten. Growing up with two uncles who were professional photographers, one gave her a Nikon FM and plenty of lessons. Soon she was metering and building skills toward her life’s calling of becoming a pro shooter herself.

Although she does commercial photography, Hood is primarily known as a wedding photographer, and those clients have made the bulk of her business. Her first wedding gig came when a friend’s photographer died two days before the ceremony. Hood couldn’t refuse when asked. She shot the entire event with a fully-manual camera.

©Melody Hood

Now employing six people at her studio, Innamorata, Hood’s fast-paced shooting of weddings keeps the energy moving when every second of the bride’s and groom’s attention is being sought by their friends and loved ones.

Claiming she thrives on high stress, Hood shoots almost everything, and rarely turns work away. “I know people who are asked to do that and they turn those jobs down because they can’t control everything,” she says. “You have to learn to adapt to changing situations. I thrive on that, too.”

©Melody Hood

All the years of practice have refined her vision of light and her ability to make aperture decisions. “I have a light meter in my head,” she says. “I can just look at a subject. I can just literally stand there, look at it, and tell you what settings to use. I know what I want from that particular scene, in terms of lighting.”

For lighting gear, Hood uses the AlienBee Vagabond II, B400, B800, B1600 strobe heads, and “the world’s cheapest umbrellas,” she explains. “I buy them in bulk because I always break them. Always. They’re $11.99, shipped from China. I went through eleven in a particularly windy month,” she says, laughing.

©Melody Hood

To trigger her lights, Hood previously used PocketWizard Plus II radios for years. For studio work these days, she has a system of MiniTT1’s, FlexTT5’s, and AC3 ZoneControllers. “I adjust more lights in the studio,” she says. She also employes two AC9 AlienBees Adapters.

“I use the Plus III for wedding work,” Hood says. “It’s so easy. I can turn off and on every light. At a reception, I have an assistant set up three to four lights: two or three on the dance floor, and one on the main table. I can pick which zones I want from the Plus III on my camera. I used to accidentally turn off settings with my face on the Plus II. The Plus III is aimed sideways, so that accident doesn’t happen now.”

©Melody Hood

With six people working for her, she brings an assistant or two to most weddings. They also shoot part of the time, while Hood is also shooting. “We can all use the same lights at the same time and never move them,” she says. “Shots can look completely different from different cameras. This is ideal! The whole PocketWizard system just works for me. There’s less cables than ever before. It’s fast and easy. You know: plug it in and go.”

©Melody Hood

Hood shoots a Canon EOS 5D Mark III and a Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III. Shooting digitally only since 2006, she now feels it complements the speed which she photographs everything from fashion jobs to weddings. She considers her strengths to be improvisation, and the ability to move fast. “Probably my biggest skill is being able to take any location and make it something beautiful,” says Hood. “That’s what I’ve had to do most of the time. I started out just like everybody else did with the weddings that were not so great—the ones in a dark church with a gross-looking reception hall—and you had to be creative. You had to find a way to take good pictures, if it was going outside in a parking lot and lighting it where it didn’t look like a parking lot, or something completely different. I did an entire group of wedding photos in a parking garage a couple of months ago because it was pouring down rain and there was nowhere else to do it.”

©Melody Hood

Getting multiple looks quickly—all of great quality—is what clients keep returning to Melody Hood for. If you need impressive images of a critical event that will only happen once, it’s good to know Hood and her team travel. They pack light and bring their own umbrellas. Use the links below to follow Melody as she continues to prove impressive imagery can be shot almost anywhere.

South Burlington, VT – May 10, 2013 – LPA Design, manufacturers of PocketWizard Photo Products, the world leader in wireless control of cameras, flash lighting and light meters, announced today that bidding has begun for twenty, very special edition radio triggers, molded in “tutu pink” and signed by photographer Bob Carey.

The first pink PocketWizard Plus III radio trigger to be auctioned was sold for seven hundred and fifty dollars during a May 3 New York City reception, co-sponsored by LPA Design to benefit the Carey Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, in celebration of its first anniversary.

“The amazing photographs in Bob Carey’s Tutu Project collection demonstrate the healing power of photography and have captured the hearts, minds and spirit of so many people,” said Dave Schmidt, LPA Design’s VP of Marketing. “PocketWizard is inspired by Bob’s unique vision as well as his belief that each of us can make important positive contributions to the lives of others. PocketWizard is proud to support Bob and the great work being done by the Carey Foundation.”

Bob Carey is a commercial photographer from Arizona with decades of photography experience. Carey’s wife Linda was diagnosed with breast cancer nine years ago. A self-portrait enthusiast who had previously transformed himself in several series of artistic images, Bob began photographing himself in a pink tutu following his wife’s breast cancer diagnosis. Linda shared these images with her fellow patients while they were receiving cancer treatment. Soon the Tutu Project was born, and all proceeds from the prints go to the non-profit Carey Foundation, which provides transportation, meals, and other daily needs to women undergoing breast cancer treatment. Images from the Tutu Project have been collected in the recently self-published book Ballerina.

Mark Wallace demonstrates a fun setup he used to take portraits of himself riding a motorcycle in this quick video. Originally part of a Webinar we aired in March to help intro the features of the PlusX, you can get the entire 49 minute video in the PocketWizard Webinar archive.

On their way back, they add a strobe to the mix, also fired by the PlusX.

We are bringing you people, ideas and photos that celebrate the craft and tools of wedding photography.

We love Cliff Mautner. Why? His no-nonsense approach to both photography and education is direct, uncompromising and produces results. And, simply put, his wedding and portrait images ROCK. We asked Cliff to tell us why the PocketWizard AC3 ZoneController plus MiniTT1 (Nikon & Canon) and FlexTT5 (Nikon & Canon) changed the way he shoots – overnight. You may remember Cliff from some work we did with him during the release of the MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 for Nikon.

Those two things – the dimension and texture of the light – create a mood that flat light doesn’t have. By getting the light off the camera, you can create angles of light that give you the texture, dimension and mood that you can reach out and touch. – Cliff Mautner

Cliff uses one light on a monopod off-camera to achieve his stunning wedding photography. The light he chooses to control manually via his AC3 ZoneController creates depth, personality and vibrant colors. Cliff chooses to deliberately avoid flat lighting, using his one off-camera flash to create these scenes where the focus of the photo is clear, and the bride and groom are stars. By using manual control, he can switch lenses, distances and adjust with the ambient light – all the while knowing that the things that normally trick TTL will not affect him.

Here is a mini gallery of Cliff’s images for your enjoyment.

We previously covered the Tutu Project event in New York City, which was to be held on March 22nd. Due to a family matter, the event was postponed, and will now be held on May 3 and 4.

Last September we released our short film about photographer Bob Carey and his personal endeavor called “The Tutu Project.” Using PocketWizard technology, Bob employed remote camera triggering to take self-portraits of himself in a pink tutu. With his wife Linda undergoing chemotherapy treatments, she and her fellow patients enjoyed the photos. This led to The Tutu Project and the creation of the Carey Foundation to support women undergoing breast cancer treatment.

The series has proved incredibly popular, with media coverage from CNN, The Today Show, the BBC, and countless other media outlets. Last fall Bob photographed himself and survivors at a series of halftime events at NFL games.

PocketWizard is proud to announce it is co-sponsoring an event to celebrate the Tutu Project’s first anniversary. The event will be held at The Lab NYC, 122 West 26th Street, New York City, on Friday, May 3rd and Saturday, May 4th, 2013.

©Bob Carey

The event will officially launch bidding for a limited edition of our popular Plus® III radio trigger made specifically for Bob Carey and the Tutu Project. They are molded in “Tutu Pink,” fully function as a Plus III, and even have a pink backlight! Limited to only 20 units, these will be signed and numbered by Bob, and auctioned off to support the Carey Foundation, a 501(c) charitable organization.

PocketWizard will also be announcing a G-Wiz Squared bag in the same Tutu Pink at this event. This special edition of the G-Wiz bag will not be auctioned, but will be available via the PocketWizard site. While quantities are not constricted to 20, availability is limited. Once the initial run is sold out, they won’t be available again. All net proceeds benefit the Carey Foundation.

Here’s the press release from the recently-announced AC3 ZoneController promotion. Photographers who purchase one new PocketWizard MiniTT1 and a FlexTT5 in the USA between April 19 and July 31, 2013 will receive a free AC3 ZoneController.

White Plains, NY – April 25, 2013 – MAC Group, the U.S. Distributor of PocketWizard radios, the world leader in wireless control and synchronization of cameras, flash lighting and light meters, announces a limited-time offer to help photographers improve the quality of their off-camera flash pictures for the upcoming wedding season.

This new mail-in program, available only in the USA, runs from April 19 through July 31, 2013. It offers a free PocketWizard AC3 ZoneController ($79 value) to photographers who purchase a new PocketWizard MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 or two FlexTT5 radios for either Canon or Nikon camera systems and then complete and send in the special form.

“Wedding photographers capture some of life’s most important moments,” said Phil Bradon, PocketWizard’s USA Marketing Manager at MAC Group. “Capturing the perfect, romantic image is the goal and that’s why today’s top photographers go a step beyond the ordinary by removing the speedlights from their cameras and taking control of the off-camera flash, automatically or manually, with PocketWizard radios. This year’s wedding-season promotion not only makes it more affordable for photographers to move up to PocketWizard radios, but also to say ‘I do’ to off-camera flash.”

The PocketWizard MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 radios can be used to trigger any combination of TTL or manual flash units placed wherever desired, to illuminate the subject or scene being photographed. The PocketWizard AC3 ZoneController is the finishing touch that provides simple, finger-tip control of light output from three separate zones (A, B, C) of flashes or groups of flash units mounted on Flex TT5 transceivers, in either automatic-exposure or manual control.
