“A Black man’s life is still not worth a white man’s life in Paris, Texas,” said activist Anthony Bond. “I am 55 years old and I know racism when I see it. Paris, Texas, is eaten up with racism.”

Bond was among 300 people who protested June 8 at the courthouse in Paris after the special prosecutor suddenly dropped murder charges against two white men accused of murdering a Black youth last September.

The New Black Panther Party, the Nation of Islam and Concerned Citizens for Racial Equality organized the rally.

Brandon McClelland’s mangled body was found on Sept. 16, 2008, on a country road. Authorities estimated that it had been dragged more than 70 feet.

McClelland’s family and members of the Black community who attended the protest stressed that the dismissals were the real injustice, and another example of racial inequality in Paris, a town with a long history of violent racism.

Shannon Finley and Charles Crostley, the two white men who had been arrested for McClelland’s murder, walked out of jail on June 4 with no restrictions.

At the courthouse rally, where a monument to the Confederacy dominates the lawn, McClelland’s mother and father spoke to the crowd through tears. Jackie McClelland said the dropped charges show that the justice system treats Blacks and whites in Paris unequally.

“I said from the start they were going to sweep this under the rug,” she said. “And nine months later, that’s exactly what happened. This was a hate crime. We couldn’t even have an open casket for my son.”

“What if it was your son? Would you fight for your kid?” said Bobby McCleary, McClelland’s father. “I miss that one word my son used to say: Pops. He didn’t call me Dad. He called me Pops.”

Rock Banks, who said he was a “grand titan” in the East Texas Ku Klux Klan, angered the crowd during the rally. He held up a small patch displaying a Nazi-era Iron Cross. After a near confrontation, he was forced to leave.

Activists vowed to get the Department of Justice to take an interest in the case. They have begun writing letters to the White House and Attorney General Eric Holder. “It’s going to be a huge campaign to get the attorney general involved,” said Deric Muhammad of the Nation of Islam in Houston. “They released two killers on a maybe. They released two killers on a might be. They released two killers on an if.”

The district attorney released Finley and Crostley after defense attorneys suddenly produced a truck driver who said he may have accidentally hit McClelland. The district attorney had given the truck driver immunity for his statement.

Protesters carried signs saying, “We Want Justice,” and “Where is the Justice for Brandon?” Using a bullhorn, organizers led chants of “Black Power,” and “No Justice, No Peace.”

A national rally to protest the dragging death of McClelland is planned for July 21, the day that the murder trial had been scheduled to begin.

Paris also made national news in 2007 when an African-American student, Shaquanda Cotton, was sentenced to seven years in a Texas Youth Commission jail for pushing a teacher’s aide. Months earlier, the same judge had given a white teen probation for burning her family’s house down.

Cotton was finally freed after a national campaign on her behalf.

Paris is located in East Texas, known for its long history of racism and Ku Klux Klan activities. In 1998 another Black man, James Byrd Jr., was dragged to death in Jasper, 200 miles south of Paris.

According to the Dallas Morning News, Paris was the site of one of the country’s most notorious “spectacle” lynchings in 1893, when 10,000 people gathered to watch the torture and burning of Henry Smith, a Black man who was accused of killing the 3-year-old daughter of a white policeman.

Smith had fled to a small town near Hope, Ark., but was caught and brought back to Paris by train. Word traveled that he had been brought back and spectators came from miles around, using “special excursion trains” to travel from Dallas.

Smith was placed on top of a wagon and paraded around the town square, then taken to a prairie south of the Texas & Pacific railroad depot, where scaffolding had been built for the occasion.

Ida B. Wells cited this case in “The Red Record: Tabulated Statistics and Alleged Causes of Lynching in the United States,” printed in 1895, which documented her research on and campaign against lynching.

Three decades later, in 1920, a Paris mob killed brothers Herman and Irving Arthur, Black sharecroppers, who were accused of killing their white landlords.

The brothers, who claimed self-defense, were taken from the Lamar County Jail to the fairgrounds where, according to the Dallas Morning News, they were chained to a flagpole and burned. The mob then dragged their bodies through the Black neighborhood of Paris.

New Black Panther Party organizer Sister Krystal Muhammad told Workers World the group is getting endorsers and organizing around the state for the demonstration on July 21. “We will not stop organizing until there is justice for Brandon. Racist murderers cannot be allowed to kill with impunity!”

These Stories are from the Australian Herald - since the us papers are not posting as much as quickly. for the record, we don't know if Michael was a Drug Addict; but if he was, then why did he pass the pre concert physical just a few months ago ?

also how could he have covered up this type of drug abuse for this many years, let alone decades? why was he able to get all these scripts from pharmacies if there is a narcotics tracking law in place in pharmacies in the us ? not much about this makes sense to us.

especially the reports that he couldn't sing anylonger.. NO WAYYYY.

you sift through the few pieces we posted as there are loads out there on Michaels' tragic death; and now apparently very depressed life.

If we could just all learn to accept that celebrities are people too; and that they deserve a life and privacy. they deserve to be free to deal with their problems and to resolve their issues without prejudice from fans; and especially the media.

the most reports on negative issues seem to be originating from TMZ in the Michael Jackson Death; so for the time being we're just gonna see what more they do, as they seem to be stirring the pot quite a bit, and not with the best spoon.

It would be the later years, that would mould a distinct impression of Michael Jackson aside from the Jackson 5; and make us all want to create our own tributes to him - upon his final curtain call.

Even those of us who thought he was slipping away from reality, watched to see what would happen. he was so charismatic that he could draw a crowd wherever he went; it just magically happened..

he was a superstar if ever the word could be used justly..

Michael Was the King of Pop - and He Earned that Title, Righteously through a sacrifice of blood, sweat and tears.

His many strange peroids were usually punctuated with a new and undeniably hot tune or album. he never made a album that didn't sell at least 1 million copies. his albums still sell like the day they were released globally on cd, and now again on Vinyl - from the early motown reissues. he has been in the spot light his entire life.

This Comeback was anticipated to be the greatest show he had ever planned. the rehearsals in Los Angeles were going well; even with reports of an occassional tired day here and there.

Michael was a trooper to the end in everysense of the word..

maybe he knew better than any of us, the sacrifices it takes to create a legacy that recovers from such scorn as was heaped on him in his later years. Michael perservered and pushed on - never looking back and making plans always for more and better.

that, I am sure - is why we loved him so..

Q+A: What might happen with monitored North Korean ship?

The U.S. Navy is tracking a North Korean ship under a new U.N. resolution that bars Pyongyang from trading in weapons, including missile parts and nuclear material.U.S. officials have declined to say what the Kang Nam might be carrying, but said it was "a subject of interest." The vessel left a North Korean port on Wednesday.

WHAT IS THE LATEST?Fox News quoted a senior U.S. military source as saying the ship appeared to be heading toward Singapore and that the navy destroyer USS John McCain was positioning itself in case it gets orders to intercept, according to a story on its website.

Singapore, a U.S. ally, said it takes "seriously the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction" and would act "appropriately" against the ship if the vessel heads to its port with a cargo of weapons. Singapore is the world's top ship refueling hub. It was unclear how long the vessel would be able to sail before it needs to refuel.

The Kang Nam is the first North Korean ship to be monitored under the new resolution, adopted this month in response to Pyongyang's May 25 nuclear test. The resolution authorized U.N. member states to inspect North Korean sea, air and land cargo.The United States and others have said they suspect North Korea of selling arms, missile parts and proliferating nuclear expertise in violation of earlier U.N. sanctions.

HOW MIGHT THE SITUATION PLAY OUT?

A U.S. naval vessel could intercept the ship, which is believed to be North Korean flagged, while it is in international waters and officers could seek permission to board. According to the resolution, permission must be given by the flag nation, or Pyongyang in this case, which would be sure to refuse.North Korea has not commented on the monitoring of the ship but is likely to regard any attempt to inspect its cargo as highly provocative and a further reason to test the resolve of the international community. It has threatened a military strike if any country tries to impose any sort of naval blockade.

WHAT DOES THE U.N. RESOLUTION ALLOW?

The resolution calls upon -- but does not order -- U.N. member states to inspect cargo to and from North Korea if there are reasonable grounds to believe it contains banned materials.It calls upon member states to inspect vessels, with the consent of the flag state, on the high seas, if they have information the ship is carrying prohibited materials.If the flag state refuses to give permission, it is supposed to ask the vessel to sail to a convenient port for inspection by local authorities, who should seize any banned goods and destroy them.

However, the resolution does not authorize the use of force. If a North Korean ship refuses to be inspected, the only recourse is to report the refusal to the Security Council.

The resolution also says member states should withhold fuel and supplies to North Korean vessels if a ship is believed to contain prohibited items unless provision of such services would be needed on humanitarian grounds.

This raises the prospect of a protracted standoff in a foreign port should the North Korean vessel try to dock to refuel and the captain refuse to allow local authorities on board.

WHY WOULD NORTH KOREA SEEK TO FLOUT THE SANCTIONS?

Weapons exports are a key source of revenue for North Korea's broken economy.A study by the U.S.-based Institute for Foreign Policy Analysis think tank estimated North Korea, whose annual GDP is about $20 billion, earns some $1.5 billion a year from missile sales. North Korean missile technology has already been exported to Pakistan, Libya, Iran, Syria and Egypt. Washington says Pyongyang has also exported nuclear technology to Syria.A drop in trade and the value of North Korea's currency has cut the regime's access to foreign exchange, further raising the risk Pyongyang will increase the sale of its military know-how.(Writing by Dean Yates; Editing by David Fox)

North Korean ship likely headed for Myanmar: report

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Singapore will take action against a North Korean ship that the United States is monitoring, if the vessel heads to its port with a cargo of weapons, the government said on Saturday. "Singapore takes seriously the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, their means of delivery and related materials," said a spokeswoman from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. "If the allegation is true, Singapore will act appropriately."

The U.S. Navy is monitoring a vessel called Kang Nam at sea under new U.N. sanctions that bar North Korea from exporting weapons, including missile parts and nuclear materials. Fox News quoted a senior U.S. military source saying the ship appeared to be heading toward Singapore and that the navy destroyer USS John McCain was positioning itself in case it gets orders to intercept, according to a story on its website.

Singapore, a U.S. ally, has the world's busiest shipping port, with most containers being trans-shipments between East and West, and it is also the world's top ship refueling hub.Singapore government agencies could not give information on the current location of the ship."We don't know even whether she is coming to Singapore," said a source at the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, which is responsible for security in Singapore waters and at its port.The U.S. officials said the ship became "a subject of interest" after leaving a North Korean port on Wednesday.

The Kang Nam is the first ship to be monitored under the U.N. sanctions adopted last week after Pyongyang raised tensions by test-firing missiles, restarting a plant to produce arms-grade plutonium and conducting a nuclear test.The U.S. has deployed anti-missile assets to the Pacific in case Pyongyang launches more missiles, U.S. officials have said.North Korea's media on Saturday said it was not threatened by new sanctions after a U.N. committee said it was considering blacklisting more North Korea companies, and individuals, for supporting Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs."It is foolish and ridiculous of our enemy powers to call for more sanctions and isolation... (do they think) it could make us even raise our eyebrows one bit?"

North Korea's Rodong Sinmum newspaper said in a commentary."If they point a gun at us, we will get back with a cannon. If they point a cannon, we will point missiles and for sanctions, we will give them revenge. Getting back with a nuclear weapon for a nuclear weapon is what we do."

In an apparent effort to generate funds in the hope of halting the U.S. economic free fall, President Barack Obama, yesterday, authorized the sale of North Dakota to music icon Sean “Diddy” Combs. Combs, formerly known as “Puff Daddy”, was awarded the State of North Dakota for what some consider to be a paltry $47 million. Some opponents of the deal are upset because the deal was pushed through quickly without allowing other parties to bid on the state, while many North Dakota residents were understandably dismayed that the Federal Government would sell their state out from under them.

A group of over 300 North Dakotians protested the sale today outside the capital building in Bismark, chanting “Go to Hell. We’re not for sale” before being showered with rubber bullets by a hastily assembled interim army wearing a fashionable ensemble designed by Combs under the Sean John label.

Among the critics of the sale are celebrities Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, David Hasselhoff, and Willie Nelson. “Yo, a deal like this should have been an auction open to the public,” said Jay-Z in response to the sale, “back room deals like this are precisely why Americans don’t trust the government. Snoop Dogg agree with that sentiment by adding, “Fo’ Shizzle!” Hasslehoff reportedly was interested in creating a “State of Inebriation”, while Nelson admitted he just wanted a place to smoke marijuana without being hassled.

Combs, in a statement released today, stated that the new nation would be called “Nubia” with himself ruling under the title “Grand Nubian” in the yet to be created capital city of Diddyopolis. Rather than a representative democracy in the mold of the U.S., Nubia would have a “Parliament Funkadelic” and a Prime Minister type position called the “MC Prime”. Although Diddy hasn’t settled on who he will appoint as the first MC Prime of Nubia, it is rumored that 50 Cent and Posdnuos from De La Soul are the top contenders for the post. “The MC Prime will handle most of the day-to-day government [excrement],” announced Combs, “but I’ll being taking a decidedly more hands on role than that ol’ biddy in England.”

President Obama called the deal a success saying, “Think of this as a real estate deal. [The U.S.] bought the land from the Indians for a couple beads and now we’ve flipped it for $47 million. Plus we don’t have to throw away any more stimulus money on that wasteland.” When asked if it wouldn’t cost at least $47 million to replace the 50 star flags with 49 star flags, Obama indicated that he was considering making Puerto Rico a State to alleviate that expense. “I’ve been to Puerto Rico and it’s beautiful, responded the President, “what’s North Dakota got? Dirt and snow, that what. It’s a win-win as far as I’m concerned.

To many, the words Juneteenth signify freedom, and a time of joyful celebration; others aren’t familiar with the term and have no idea what it refers to. Also referred to as Freedom or Emancipation Day, Juneteenth is a combination of June 19th and is the day that celebrates the abolition of slavery in the state of Texas, however for 31 states, Juneteenth is recognized holiday, in fact, Juneteenth is the oldest holiday that celebrates the abolition of slavery, with its first observance dating back to June 19, 1865, well over a century ago.The date of June 19, 1865

is significant due to the fact that Texas was the last state to free her slaves. General Gordon Granger issued the order more than two years after President Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation; the first order of the Emancipation Proclamation was signed on September 22, 1862, the second on January 1, 1863. Though the Emancipation had legally granted Texas slaves their freedom, many were not freed until that infamous day of June 19, 1865 when General Granger and his army declared an official end to the Civil War by proclaiming order #3:"The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and free laborer.

"For many, Juneteenth is a time of celebratory fun, as well as a time for painful reflection. The fact that many are still unaware of Juneteenth shines a light on the importance of the need for a great voice in the African American community.
