Mica High School has never seen likes of anyone such as Stargirl. She's so odd and original, and after they get over the shock, they become enchanted with her. Leo Borlock, the narrator, falls in love.

But popularity can be fickle and after a while the students begin to turn on her. Why can't she be normal? Leo wants her to fit in, to be liked. Will she change for him? How can he ask her to do that?

This is an engaging story about identity in the microcosm of high school life. Just like Spinelli's other book, Maniac Magee, Stargirl has an almost urban-legend quality about her and is just as compelling. And if you've already read this book, please check out the sequal, Love, Stargirl.
