Hey True Voice Media listeners, if you didn’t already know, this episode is a follow up to our intern special we had a few months back. We’ll be checking in with Natalie, who’s been with us now for about three months, to see what her experience has shaped up to be as a True Voice Media intern.

In the coming months, we’ll be joined by two new interns. So in this episode, we’ll dive into what our internship program has to offer, what we’re looking for in an intern, and what any perspective interns may need to know before joining our team.

Hello listeners! Welcome back! We hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving holiday!

Today, we’re bringing you a very special conversation about how we understand our identities online from the perspective of someone who spends a lot of time helping young people make those connections.

This week, Caroline is interviewing her very best friend Vicky Nucci, a masters candidate for Higher Education Policy and student affairs degree at West Chester University, about why your social media identity matters and how we can start having these conversations with our employees.

You may be asking how does this apply to me, a business owner? Here’s why! Anyone that works in management or leadership is responsible for the identity development of their employees within their organization and a piece that often goes unaddressed is how much of that development takes place online. So while we will be examining this topic from the lens of student affairs, everything that we’re going to talk about today can be applied to how you may work with your interns or team members or yourself! And before you think, this isn’t impacting my employees, it is. If you work millennials, you’re working with someone who’s grow up with the internet and has had to find their place within it. We hope you enjoy!

Since most Thanksgivings involve turkey, love, and some healthy debate, here’s 5 pieces of content to keep you informed:

Facebook, Twitter, and Google Testimony and What it Means for Tech Accountability Standards

In this podcast, we talk about Facebook, Twitter, and Google’s recent testimony before Congress about Russian involvement on their platforms and it’s interference with the 2016 election.

How to Spot Fake News on Social Media, Online

Recently Jeff was featured on NBC10 and spoke about how to identify fake news online. He offers some useful tips in how to fact check sources from any articles you may find on your Facebook feed.

How did Facebook Miss This? Why FB is Cracking Down on Ad Targeting After Russian Account Scandal

In this podcast, we discuss who determines what is considered offensive and discriminatory, and whether corporations be making those calls online.

#280. Really, Jack?

For anyone that doesn’t know, Twitter recently announced that select users were able to tweet in 280 characters versus the traditional 140 and we have lots of feelings about it.

#MeToo: A conversation with the Women of True Voice Voice

We felt like this was an important topic to discuss on air in the wake of all the news about Harvey Weinstein and the #metoo campaign itself. This conversation was a chance for us to process together and recognize “the magnitude of the problem.”

Q&A from this Week’s Discussion:

(1:22) – Is “organic reach” really dead?

No, predictable organic reach is dead, meaning that the days of you posting to a platform and having lots of people see it are dead for a couple of reasons: 1) the nature of these networks – due to the number of things coming through it has become more difficult to actually reach someone 2) artificial reach selects what items you might find interesting, so they’ve diminished the reach that Facebook pages would have gotten organically with their content.

So is organic reach really dead? It depends. If you’re talking about Facebook, then yes. But, organic reach as a whole is not dead.

(6:50) – Is there a way to “hack the system” and gain social media exposure without paying?

There are lots of ways to hack these systems if you’re looking to do it organically or through paid promotion.

If we’re talking organically, try these two things:

Reach out to a lot of people individually.

Post something that is notable and exciting.

Jeff’s most engaged posts are when he got engaged to his fiancé Erica and his recent appearance on NBC10. because each of these posts is notable and exciting.

Jeff’s “hack” is to do more of those interesting and noteworthy things. Then, reach out to individual people who may actually care about what you have to offer and give them something of value.

Through those interactions, you’ll build a stronger network and a bigger community of people who will actually care and be invested in what you’re doing.

It’s not a hack, just go do that and you’ll gain more exposure.

(12:26) – How long does it take before I’ll start seeing results from social media marketing?

I saw results pretty rapidly, but the results I saw in my first year are nothing like what I’m getting now. It’s functionally all the same work it just gets more efficient.

It all depends on what your goals are. You want to measure metrics that make sense with your business goals.

At the end of the day, there are a lot of things in social media that you’re not going to be able to measure, but that are going to be crucial to your success.

If you’re a struggling entrepreneur, the only metric you should be concerned with is, “Have you grown your business?”

That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t focus on building relationships that don’t yield sales, it just means that as you build relationships that you’re looking for sales, and there needs to be an opportunity there.

(20:12) – What social media tools and services could you not live without?

At the end of the day, I can live without all of them. They’re just tools. There are a lot of different ways to get things done.

More often then not, people can get focused on the tool and not the objective. The tool doesn’t help you unless you know what you’re trying to accomplish.

The most important tool I have in my tool kit is my conversation skills.

Yup, we’ll be getting into our usual territory of censorship, gatekeeping, and our inevitable Elon Musk-y fate. But we’ll end on a happy note as we always do by sharing what we’re obsessed with this week.

Hello True Voice Media podcast listeners, we have a very special episode for you this week.

In the spirit of halloween, we wanted to talk about scary stories that got their start in the scariest place of all…THE INTERNET.

Yes, that means we’re going to be talking about Slender Man, those Killer Clowns from last year, and even Salad Fingers (yes, that did genuinely scare some of us).

Warning: This conversation will feature references to violent crimes and assault.

Enjoy, but maybe with the lights on.

We know we missed plenty of scary stuff, so comment with your favorite online horror story!

Hello True Voice Media podcast listeners, we’re back with another episode.

On our previous episode, we talked about Snapchat and all of it’s new features, and this week we’d like to address the #metoo that circulated through many of our social media feeds last week.

We felt like this was an important topic to discuss on air in the wake of all the news about Harvey Weinstein and the #metoo campaign itself. This conversation was a chance for us to process together and recognize “the magnitude of the problem.”

Warning: This conversation will feature references to sexual harassment and assault.

Hello True Voice Media Podcast fans, we have a new episode for you this week!

Last week, we talked about Facebook Ad Targeting and how people misuse the feature to share and monetize hate speech and misinformation, and this week we’re moving from one major social media network’s big news to the other.

Yes, we’re talking about #280.

For anyone that doesn’t know, last week Twitter announced that select users were able to tweet in 280 characters versus the traditional 140. We had a lot of thoughts about that move, so that discussion pretty much dominated the episode, but we did still share what we’re obsessed with this week.

Some resources from this week’s discussion:

So why oh why is Twitter doing #280?

The story about the author who wrote her book through tweets starts at 17:39. But we still recommend that you listen to the whole episode.
