  It's one thing to correct or punish a child for an offence, and it's another thing to abuse a child. Most times parent tend to correct their children or ward but in the wrong pattern. When a child is punished for an offence it tends to change the heart of the child and let him know he's wrong not making a child experience a trauma he wouldn't forget in a life time.     I think it’s important to clarify that my poem is about abuse, not spanking.
    
    Spanking is often described as a controlled form of discipline intended to correct behavior without causing lasting harm, typically limited in scope and not rooted in fear, control, or emotional damage.
    
    Abuse, however, crosses that boundary. It involves repeated or excessive harm, whether physical, emotional, or psychological, that creates fear, erodes trust, and leaves lasting impact on a person’s sense of safety and self-worth.
    
    My poem speaks to that deeper reality. It reflects experiences where harm is not momentary or corrective, but sustained and damaging, shaping how a person sees themselves and the world around them.
    
    The distinction matters, because what is being described here is not discipline, but the kind of abuse that leaves enduring effects far beyond the moment in which it occurred. more »

    I want to start by saying I’m not trying to diminish or compare anyone’s experiences. What people go through is personal and real, and I respect that. My intent here is simply to clarify what this particular poem is addressing, not to suggest that one person’s experience holds more weight than another’s.
    
    For context, I did receive corporal punishment in school for misbehavior, specifically paddling; however, what this poem reflects is not comparable to corporal punishment or to spanking at home, whether by hand, paddle, switch, or otherwise.
    
    Those forms of discipline, however debated, are generally understood to have limits, intent, and an end point. What this poem speaks to exists outside of that entirely. It is not about correction. It is about harm that continues, escalates, and reshapes a person over time. It is the difference between an act meant to address behavior and an experience that instills fear, removes any sense of safety, and leaves lasting physical and emotional impact.
    
    This poem is rooted in abuse, where there are no clear boundaries, no resolution, and no protection. The effects do not end when the moment passes, they carry forward and influence identity, trust, and how the world is experienced long after.
    
    That distinction is important to me, and it is central to what this poem is meant to convey. more »

    I think we’re at a point where each generation tends to look at the next and see something lacking or needing correction, but in reality, they are often just different. There are areas where they are stronger, and others where they face new challenges; it is not necessarily a matter of right or wrong, but of change.
    
    In many ways, those differences are shaped by the environment and conditions that previous generations have created. So rather than looking outward for what should have been done differently, it often becomes an inward question of what has been modeled, taught, and passed on.
