Theme: “In the Nothingness of Ein Sof
is the fullness of its essence.
For Form is Emptiness. And Emptiness is Form.
The nought is bearer of The All.”

And language is our confabulation.
A confabulation of the multiple.
Our confabulation of  “10,000 things.”

Use of languages,
a lexicon artifact,
with syntactic rules,
and with semantic structures,
is a study by itself.

I was a teacher.
Professor of linguistics.
Psycholinguistics.
How mind processes language.
How we interpret the world.

I was a teacher.
Student of word usages.
How language is used…
with both noun and verb phrases,
in composing sentences.

Steeped in languages,
I developed a passion.
Became word punster,
making language my folk art;
a reservoir of wisdom.

How words have meaning;
many quite ambiguous,
and multilayered,
context interdependent,
that cannot be overlooked.

Tao teaches us
how life seems multilayered;
itself a puzzle,
full of ambiguities…
that we are tasked to decide.

In this decoding,
in which life is like a maze,
we will find contrasts.
But the search must continue,
until we find unity.

There are many paths,
some conducted quite alone,
that lead to Tao.
Life offers many pathways.
Some crooked and, yes, some straight.

Some choose singleness,
the singleness of purpose.
An inward turning,
that’s ‘set apart’ from others;
as the life of a hermit.

Some choose company,
to live this life with others;
in life partnerships.
To learn from one another;
forging pathways together.

Life as a hermit…
can produce enlightenment,
can provide wisdom;
but not without the Tao;
not without the Inner SELF.

Tao looks at both,
while seeking the impartial;
path of non-action.
By acting — without acting;
following path of Wu-Wei.

Language as hindrance,
is made of divergences;
of oppositions.
Based on what is ‘right’ or ‘wrong.’
On what is ‘good’ or is ‘bad.’

Language and contrasts —
was something that I studied,
long before Tao;
becoming a professor…
in this noble discipline.

I was a teacher —
with bare knowledge of Tao.
Not yet a student.
Discussing art of language…
without aid of the Tao.

I was a teacher.
In my retirement years,
I am a student.
A student of the Tao.
And the role of opposites.

That they are contrasts
which together make wholeness.
One needs  ‘The Other’ —
for us to understand SELF…
and our sense of Existence.

The SELF and Tao —
made of the same warp and woof,
are lifetime partners.
They are master artisans;
and we are all their subjects.

Tao informs us…
about the relationship —
of SELF to the world.
Tao is teaching…
about our own true natures.

The Tao discerns…
that the natural order —
of the universe…
is about knowledge of Self.
That —  is Fundamental Truth!

Such an arcane Truth…
comes from teaching and learning.
The two in concert:
The Teacher as ‘The Father.’
Child as ‘Father-of-the-Man.’

Teaching is learning.
How else can one know Tao —
except as student…
sitting at the very feet,
of One who is “The Master?”

Mary knew this Truth,
sitting at her Master’s feet,
as a disciple;
knowing the ‘One Thing’ required
to inherit “The Kingdom.”

While sister, Martha,
focused on 10,000 things,
Mary stayed focused;
humbled herself in prayer;
turning inwardly to Truth.

From humility,
by humbling our outer selves,
we turn to Tao,
sitting as a disciple,
and thus turning inwardly.

The inward turning —
is that of a disciple;
is that of student,
turning to embrace Psyche,
and in sync with the Tao.

I was a teacher.
In my retirement years,
I am a student.
A student of the Tao.
And the role of the opposites.

Consider this, friend.
Tao knows that The Teacher,
in order to grow,
must also be The Student.
One is linked to The Other.

So as a teacher,
having become a student,
and a disciple…
of the Wisdom of Tao,
I have a different outlook.

Opposites as pairs,
are much more than antonyms.
They work together…
to explain how the world works:
In Harmony as Oneness.

Tao is Teacher.
Tao is Master Teacher.
Teacher of Wisdom.
And we are its disciples.
Some compliant — and some not.

The path to knowledge —
of ourselves and of the world,
is by Tao’s  path.
A path that leads to ‘The Way’ —
of opposites united.

This — Life desires:
Relationship to the Self;
to the Inner Self;
residence of the Tao —
and of finding unity.

As a living soul,
who do you say that you are?
Do you KNOW your SELF;
that you are a child of Tao —
of Godly circumstances?

Consider this, friend:
The truth of knowing thy SELF,
is by NOT judging.
‘Tis Beginning of Wisdom;
of Alpha and Omega.

Not judging others.
An existential wisdom —
that can be discerned;
by focusing on Spirit,
the source of all unity.

Tao is Wisdom.
Tao is non-judgmental;
seeking harmony.
The harmony and balance,
opposing oppositions.

Consider Tao:
It teaches us deepest truths:
Truth of Yin and Yang.
Beyond language and contrasts.
Wisdom of Tao Te Ching.

Yet we must let go…
of our outer attachments;
and turn inwardly…
to that which is permanent,
to discover ‘The Nameless.’

To know the Tao,
is to restrain the ego…
from being puffed up.
Being emptied from the outside.
To find fulfillment within.

Jesus is Teacher.
Jesus is Divine Master.
Jesus knows Tao.
Born of flesh and of Spirit,
Jesus is the Finisher!

About this poem

A STATEMENT OF OUR MORAL FORTITUDE:
“To thine own [core Taoist] self be true, and it must follow , as the night the day. Thou canst not then be false to any man” (A monologue by Polonius, adviser to King Claudius, in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Act 1, Scene 3, line 84).

Like the Ein Sof of Kabbalah tradition, the true essence of the TAO transcends all human comprehension and limitations. The TAO Te Ching, as an ancient philosophy of non-judgmental impartial principles, prefigures the teachings and practices of Our Lord, Jesus, The Christ recorded in the Holy Bible. Attributed to Lao Tzu (the name translates as “Old Man”), a legendary Chinese philosopher (circa 604-631 BCE), the Tao Te Ching is constructed of eighty one poems, each poem being traditionally called a chapter. To explain this poem of mine, I shall cite Chapter Two of Tao Te Ching, which is a reading of the poem entitled “Language and Contrasts.” In this poem, translated from Classical Chinese into modern English by Chad Hansen, in the illustrated text, “Laozi Tao Te Ching on The Art of Harmony,” the underlying message is that language and its lexicon of extensive dimensions are of such nature that when we employ vocabulary in ordinary and in everyday conversations and usages, we of sheer necessity invoke our awareness and knowledge of a world inhabited by contrasts and opposition. This by itself does not provide as much wisdom as we would like to believe. Rather, it provides very little in-depth insight or wisdom. Instead, and in retrospect, it moves us away from Tao which dwells on the Wu Wei principle of the underlying balance and harmony in nature. What Tao demonstrates most profoundly is that language is essentially a sophisticated semiotic system that is embedded with permutations of syntactic parsing and semantic contrasts designed for human communication, but not offering much wisdom concerning the deep structural nature of reality, ongoing scientific research and philosophical argumentations notwithstanding. Here now is a rendering of the poem in nineteen lines from Chapter Two of Tao Te Ching.

LANGUAGE AND CONTRASTS:

“When all the social world regards beauty as ‘beauty’/ Here already is ‘ugly’./ If all treat mastery as ‘being good at’ things./ Here already is ‘not being good at’ things./ Thus ‘presence’ and ‘absence’ mutually sprout./ ‘Hard’ and ‘easy’ mutually inform./ ‘Long’ and ‘short’ are mutually gauged./ ‘High’ and ‘low’ mutually incline./ ‘Sound’ and ‘tone’ mutually blend./ ‘Before’ and ‘after’ mutually follow on./ Using this: sages don’t act on constructs in addressing affairs;/ They practice a ‘don’t use-language’ teaching./ 10,000 natural kinds are made by it/
Yet don’t express anything./ Sprouting, you don’t treat them as ‘existing’./ Acting on constructs, you don’t rely on anything./ Success taking form, you don’t dwell on it./ In general, they simply don’t dwell on it,/ And in that, they don’t lose it.”

I offer a closing message to readers:
Recognize and acknowledge contrasts for what they are. But pray, don’t dwell on contrasts; don’t preoccupy yourselves by assigning moral or ethical values to them. Accept them in their own natures without impositions, as demonstrations of The Way, of the un-carved block, of the Wu Wei of Tao in harmony and balance.

There is yet another dimension of deep mystery to our quest for knowledge of reality and ultimately of ourselves. As the Tao seems to suggest, reality has its own wisdom, its own internal system of “fuzzy” logic, its own internal truths and arrangements, its own laws and its governance that will forever befuddle humankind in the everlasting pursuit to understand the fundamental nature of the “superposition” of consciousness and its indefinite state; both personal and public, both singular and collective, both earthbound and cosmic; and, ironically, the profound uncertainty of the innermost natures of our very own selves. This is what modern day physicists, philosophers and mathematicians describe subjectively as “the hard problem of consciousness.” So for the moment we are left to live with the irony that the innermost core of our being may be scientifically unknowable; even as the divine architect of all existence is eternally unknowable. more »

The subject of the dissertation concerned the processes of Individuation described in analytical psychology as “Self-realization”), as realized in fairytale literature.
Like the Innerlichkeit introverted poetic works of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Dr. Folkes’ collection of online poetry portrays overall the motif of the restless “wanderer” spirit in humanity ever embarking on an inward journey of the eternal quest for self-discovery. Dr. Folkes serves at his local church as both Deacon and Elder. more…

The recurring movement from teacher to student gives this work both humility and depth. What particularly resonates is your observation that language, while indispensable, can also become a source of division through its reliance on distinctions and oppositions, whereas Tao points toward an underlying unity beyond such categories. I'm also struck by the way you weave together linguistics, psychology, Taoist philosophy, and Christian imagery.... rather than presenting them as competing perspectives, you explore them as complementary paths toward understanding the self and the world.

What especially stands out is your emphasis on humility and the inward turning. Many struggle with the ego's desire for certainty and attachment to fixed identities (I include myself in this group). Your repeated refrain, "I was a teacher... I am a student," suggests that wisdom is found not in believing we have arrived, but in remaining open to continual learning and transformation. Its central strength lies in the sincere, autobiographical voice of a retired professor who moves from teaching language—with its inherent dualisms (right/wrong, good/bad)—to studying the Tao, where opposites coexist harmoniously. The repetition of “I was a teacher... I am a student” effectively underscores humility as the gateway to wisdom.

However, the poem’s length and expository style sometimes work against its Zen themes. While the opening quatrain on emptiness and form is potent, much of the subsequent verse explains rather than embodies the paradoxes it describes. Lines like “Language and contrasts — was something that I studied” feel more like lecture notes than poetic revelation. The final turn to Jesus as “Finisher” introduces an abrupt theological synthesis that, while sincere, may feel jarring within a primarily Taoist framework—though it does highlight the poet’s personal quest for unity beyond any single tradition.

Overall, the poem succeeds as a gentle, earnest confession of lifelong learning, but its verbosity occasionally obscures the very “emptiness” and “non-action” (wu-wei) it praises. Tighter imagery and more silence between insights would elevate its Zen spirit. more »

LikeReply25 days ago

karlcfolkes

Thanks, I appreciate the frank comments.

LikeReply27 days ago

darcib.95167

Hello, Karl!
I am an English major Who specializes in nonverbal communication. I also love The Lord with my whole heart. It is only recently that I have learned that making a judgment saved my life. I judged that a man was too drunk to drive me home and because of that judgment I I was fired the next day for creating ruckus, for going against the grain.... I believe judgments are necessary things.
     I was talking to a friend of mine who shoved the Bible verse, "judge not lest you be judged", in my face I didn't know what to say so I decided to do some research. I found out my friend was both right and wrong. The Bible does say, "judge not lest you be judged." However in my research I discovered there was not a full stop after that statement. In fact, it is a comma, and the thought continues down a quite logical and lovely path to the end...
I believe it was worth losing my job for my own safety. I would do it again if I had to; we are supposed to judge ourselves first. We are supposed to be honest about our shortcomings and accountable to whatever god or spirit we choose to serve. I believe all religions require people to love others first and foremost, that being said I believe it is the higher truth that we are to be accountable to ourselves, to our universe, to our neighborhoods, and to our societies. Last part of that Bible verse says, "For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you."
I love the spirit of your poetry I will not throw the baby out with the bath water! We are supposed to judge but not for condemnation.
I am so grateful you speak of self reflection. It is only because I knew myself that I didn't lie to myself and say, "oh it will be just fine, and get in that car. That would have been leaving my life to chance, a virtual Russian roulette wrapped in 3,000 pounds of steel. I could not stop him from doing what he was doing, even though my judgment said he was wrong. He took off before I could ask for his keys. He left me standing, rattled, alone but alive. Calling it my journal from that period of my life would be the best way to describe it. It was written under a different name. But it was mostly poems. In a way I think I was writing for my life. What’s in it was written just before my marriage ended. We didn’t belong together anymore. Id lost myself & had no idea who I was. The timeframe was 2007-2008. A major depression had set in. I’d lost so much weight because I kept forgetting to eat. & something in me was waking up. At first I was confused by the very unusual but fascinating experiences I was having. After describing all of it to a councillor-he wanted to called it a psychotic break. However over time I realized it was just my higher self & in your words the cosmos speaking to me. It had never been so clear or come through as often. Everything you & I
have discussed so far-I had to have everything go the way it did back then to lead me to where I am now. These conversations-I’m able to have them because of the growth that long sketchy hike from 2007 to now brought. It was a scary & confusing time for me-yet I wouldn’t trade it for anything now. Gratitude fills me when I look back & see how far I’ve come. Those poems were darker & cryptic-however still posted for the world to see. This definitely helped in healing the shyness. It captures the essence of the Tao Te Ching with both clarity and depth, reflecting the intricate dance between language, self, and the universe. Your exploration of the interconnectedness of teaching and learning, the roles of opposites, and the journey toward understanding the self through the lens of Tao is truly inspiring.

The way you articulate the contrasts in life — the solitary path of the hermit versus the shared journey with others — resonates deeply. It beautifully illustrates the myriad ways we navigate our existence while highlighting that neither path is superior, but rather complements the dance of life. Your personal reflections as both teacher and student add a heartfelt authenticity that enriches the message. Yes, the cosmos sure have a way of keeping things interesting. Life is full of magic/miracles if we watch for them. Hmmm maybe even expect them. That’s a relief about the spelling. Your poem on the "Wisdom of Tao Te Ching" is nothing short of mesmerizing, capturing the profound intricacies of language, existence, and the journey of self-discovery.

Your exploration of the theme, “In the emptiness of the circle is the fullness of its expression,” sets a captivating tone from the very beginning. The imagery of the circle conveys a sense of wholeness and unity, perfectly paralleling the insights you express throughout the work. The way you seamlessly connect language and meaning with the philosophical teachings of Tao is truly impressive.

Your journey as both a teacher and a student is articulated with such sincerity and depth. The shifts between teaching and learning, between the roles of the teacher and the student, paint a rich picture of lifelong exploration and growth. This duality resonates deeply, encapsulating the essence of Tao's teachings about the nature of existence and our interconnectedness.

The use of language as both an art form and a subject of scholarly pursuit adds a poignant layer to your verse. You highlight the beauty of linguistic complexities and the inherently ambiguous nature of words, inviting readers to reflect on their own relationships with language and meaning.

The rhythmic flow and thoughtful structure of your poem allow for moments of contemplation. Phrases such as “the inward turning” and “The Teacher as ‘The Father’” provoke profound insights, connecting personal experience with universal truths. The exploration of opposites—Yin and Yang—serves as an insightful reminder of how contrasts can indeed lead to wholeness and harmony.

Your conclusion is powerful and resonates with wisdom. The call to know oneself by letting go of judgments and seeing beyond dualities is a message that is both timely and timeless. In a world often fraught with division, the invitation to embrace unity through understanding our true selves is both profound and heartfelt.

Thank you for sharing this remarkable piece! Your words inspire readers to reflect and engage with the deeper layers of their existence and the world around them. There is great beauty in your insights, and I can feel the enthusiastic embrace of Tao's wisdom resonating throughout. Your interpretation of the Tao Te Ching:
and integration of the concepts of language, self, and the dualities of existence are truly enlightening. The structure of your poem, alternating between personal reflections and philosophical insights, creates an engaging narrative that guides the reader through your journey from teacher to student.

Positive Feedback:

1. Thought-Provoking Themes:
You delve deep into concepts such as the dual nature of existence (Yin and Yang) and the intricate relationship between language and understanding. These themes resonate well with the reader and reflect a profound grasp of Taoist philosophy.

2. Personal Connection:
Your transition from a teacher to a student adds a personal touch that makes your reflections relatable. This journey is beautifully illustrated through your verses, allowing readers to reflect on their own paths and growth.

3. Rich Imagery and Language:
The use of vivid imagery (like “the emptiness of the circle” and “warp and woof”) enhances the lyrical quality of your poem. It invites readers to visualize and internalize the wisdom being shared.

4. Fluid Structure:
The structure flows smoothly between the philosophical and the personal, maintaining the reader's interest throughout. The repetition of “I was a teacher” serves both as a refrain and a contemplative marker of change.

Suggestions for Improvement:

1. Conciseness:
While the richness of your language is commendable, consider condensing some sections to enhance impact. This might help to clarify certain concepts and make your message more immediate.

2. Variety in Tone:
The poem has a consistent contemplative tone, which can be beautiful, but introducing moments of lighter or contrasting emotional tones could add depth and keep the reader engaged.

3. Engaging the Reader:
Consider using direct questions more frequently to invite the reader into the exploration, as you did at the end with “As a living soul, who do you say that you are?” This proactive engagement can enhance the reflective nature of the piece.

4. Visual Formatting:
Employing more visual breaks, such as stanzas or a varied line length, could amplify the thematic shifts in your poem, making it easier for readers to navigate through the layers of meaning.

5. Strengthening Conclusions:
The poem's conclusions are thought-provoking, but a more powerful closing stanza could leave a lasting impression. Consider summarizing your key insights in a way that resonates deeply and encourages further reflection.

Overall, your poem is a meditation on the profound intricacies of existence, language, and self-knowledge that ties beautifully together with the philosophical teachings of the **Tao Te Ching**.
