The Red Shadow at the Margin of Night

Lonely dream, a perch for chasing shadows.
Suddenly the collapsed wall shifts,
Into a fortressed house, a turreted shell.
At the bottom of the well, hollow clarity,
On the stone, moss licks its own decay,
The stray roosters peck at the verdigris.
Blankly man counts star-ships drifting into distance,
A sculpted shadow stands unmoving,
While cyclical winds retrace their circuits.
The Five Ridges lean from their axis,
Bandages tightly swaddling the mountains,
And a blade weeps in the hollow green ravine.
Angled thoughts of old grudges gather.
In a leaf-strewn clearing, sudden revelation,
Crimson horses clustering in a wild ring.
Half-hidden banners, low and still,
Whisper of harvests to bloom,
The dark-red scales and weathered drift float.
In abandoned cannons, the nests reside,
Where newborn swallows peck and play,
And the gentle breath of apricot drifts beside.
Far along the margin of night,
Stagnant souls fade into the dark,
As the pale moon and thin clouds nurse their solitude.

About this poem
Ruijin is in the mountains bordering Fujian Province in the south-eastern part of Jiangxi Province. It developed a reputation as cradle of the Chinese Communist Revolution. In 1931, Mao Zedong founded Chinese Soviet Republic (CSR) with Ruijin as its capital; it was called Ruijing by the Chinese Soviet Republic (CSR). The Communists withdrew in 1934 on the Long March after being surrounded by the Nationalists. In this surrealist stream-of-consciousness reverie, the revolutionary shrine appears as a spiritual wasteland. Lonely dreams dissolve into collapsing walls birthing armored turrets; moss devours well-bottom clarity while the stray roosters peck verdigris—emblems of ideological decay masked as vitality. Bandaged mountains bleed suppressed trauma, crimson horses whirl in frenzy, the flags veil sterile harvests. The river sheds its armor, leaving broken jade adrift. At night’s margin, stagnant souls fade beneath thin clouds, quietly dismantling the Red Capital’s myth into hollow insomnia. more »
