    One of the thoughts that lingers in my mind is how humanity has learned to accomplish extraordinarily complex things, yet still often struggles with the simplicity of treating one another with dignity, empathy, and basic understanding.
    
    I think much of personal growth begins when we become willing to step outside the comfort of our own perspectives long enough to recognize that other people’s lives, experiences, struggles, cultures, and forms of happiness are no less human simply because they differ from our own; if anything, it is those differences that challenge us intellectually, emotionally, and morally to evolve beyond narrow ways of thinking.

    One of the central ideas behind the poem was the contradiction of humanity claiming to live in tomorrow through advancements in technology, medicine, infrastructure, knowledge, etc., while still struggling with something as fundamentally simple as accepting people who do not look, think, live, love, worship, or exist exactly as we do.
    
    Many of the historical moments referenced within the piece are not ancient history, they are relatively recent reminders of how painfully slow moral and societal evolution can be compared to scientific or technological progress.
    
    To me, growth does not come from everyone thinking alike or existing within one narrow framework of humanity, but from our willingness to challenge our own perspectives, remain open-minded, and recognize that our way is not necessarily the way, merely a way.

    What drove this piece was not admiration for humanity’s progress, but disappointment in how embarrassingly slow that progress has truly been despite nearly two centuries of suffering, protest, violence, legislation, and repeated historical warnings that prejudice, fear, and exclusion poison societies from the inside out.
    
    When I referenced Selma and Loving v. Virginia, it was intentional because these are not distant ancient events buried in textbooks; they exist within living memory. There are people alive today who lived through a period where interracial marriage was illegal, where equal treatment under the law was violently resisted, and where basic humanity itself had to be demanded in the streets through blood and sacrifice.
    
    Yet somehow, despite all of that history, society still remains obsessed with controlling who people love, how they identify, how they exist, and whether their humanity deserves recognition from others...that should deeply disturb people.
    
    What frustrates me most is that humanity constantly congratulates itself for being “advanced” while still behaving prehistoric whenever someone exists outside of traditional comfort zones. We accelerate technologically at a breathtaking pace while remaining emotionally primitive in how we treat one another. We build artificial intelligence, split atoms, explore space, and connect globally in seconds, yet some people still lose sleep over consenting adults loving differently than they do...that contradiction is intellectually humiliating.
    
    If another person’s happiness, identity, or relationship feels threatening to someone who is not being harmed in any way, then the issue is not the existence of those people; the issue is unresolved fear, insecurity, prejudice, or conditioning within the observer themselves.
    
    At some point society has to confront an uncomfortable reality: hatred survives because too many people continue treating intolerance as a respectable opinion instead of what it actually is, fear masquerading as morality.
    
    To me, true progress is not changing laws decades after damage has already been done; true progress is reaching a level of emotional maturity where another human being’s existence no longer requires approval, permission, debate, or public justification in the first place. more »

Virginia, and the march from Selma mark progress in doctrine, the lived application of those principles often trails behind.
    
    There is an irony that continues to stand out to me today, especially when considering Loving v. Virginia alongside the phrase “Virginia is for lovers,” which invites a broader question of who that promise has truly applied to, and whether it reflects reality or aspiration.
    
    Each stanza was intended to hold a compressed reflection of that tension, where progress exists on paper, yet the human element continues to wrestle with its full realization.
    
    I also appreciate your interpretation of the ammonia metaphor, as it speaks to how ideas framed as preservation can become corrosive when they resist growth.
