After graduating college and pursuing careers in engineering and then graphic design, Nick Ward knew that neither of these paths were right for him. He hopped in his car and headed west to explore the country, and see and do as many interesting things as possible. It was on this trip that he discovered it wasn’t scenic America that inspired him but rather the unique individuals he met as he went from town to town.

After talking to strangers from all walks of life, from all parts of the country, Nick returned from this trip with an entirely new perspective for his art, one that focuses on what motivates people to do the things they do.  “It is just so fascinating,” he states, “the way people will try to look and act differently based on whom they are interacting with. My work is all about people – how they interrelate, how they portray themselves, and how they make me feel.”

Nick appreciates things about other people that they may not appreciate about themselves, and this is reflected in his paintings, as he is inspired by the features that make individuals distinct – moles, freckles, scars, etc. His paintings provide a refreshing counterpoint to the retouched images we are force-fed every day in magazines and on television, presenting flawless beauty as the ideal. Nick explains: “This is the reason that I study the colors so closely and try to make each brush stroke stand up on its own. As a sort of strike against overly blended, overly perfect images.”

Nick currently resides and paints in the Distillery, a former rum distillery turned artist haven, and the hub of the young and vibrant art scene in Boston.

Last Saturday I had the great opportunity to visit the Tullman Collection at Flashpoint Academy. Howard Tullman gave a personalized tour to artists from the Motion to Stillness exhibition currently on view at the Zhou B Art Center. Some of the attending artists were already part of his impressive collection of more than 1500 works. Distributed along the two floors of the college, the Tullman collection is expansive and reflective of Howard's own visionary eye.

David was born in a coal mining town in Nottinghamshire. Although he has always been creative through acting, singing and painting, it wasn’t until he was 27 that he went to study Graphic Design and Illustration at Salford University, which was from 1997 to 2000.

He didn’t get to gain the BA (Hons) as he fell foul of financial difficulties.

Up until 2008, David had numerous non art related jobs after leaving university and painted as a hobby and had a few minor exhibitions with other artists during this time. The jobs ended when he found himself homeless after his marriage broke down and It was while staying at a hostel in southeast London that he started painting again.

He spent the most part of 2011 painting a series of portraits, primarily to gain confidence in painting and now his story continues…

Jamie Poole was born in 1973 in Northampton, England. He studied at the School of Design and Ceramics in Stoke-on- Trent Staffordshire for a BA Honours Design: Surface Pattern and graduated in 1996. Jamie has exhibited widely around the UK where his work has primarily been Landscape paintings and a hand printed ‘Landscape Sofa’. In recent years he has been an active member of the arts event known as ‘Open Studios’ in Northamptonshire and has produced commissioned works for private clients. Jamie continues to be inspired by his job as a teacher of Art at Northampton School for Girls where he has been working for the last 8 years.

‘Sophie’ is the first of a new series of work in which he uses the printed word to create an image.

Poems included and collaged into the painting ‘Sophie’ – The poems for this work were chosen by the sitter.

Artist Statement: Sophie

The things that make people who they are come from their experiences of the world around them and the people they meet. For Sophie, the sitter in this portrait, English literature has been a great passion. The verses of a specially selected collection of poems have been carefully dissected and layered on the support of this painting to create her portrait. The text meanders and flows around the curves of her features and is embedded deep in her eyes creating an intricate mosaic surface. The tales in the typography have become entwined within her image and are part of Sophie’s identity.
The creation of this work has been an intimate meditation and contemplation of the sitter. Jamie Poole has created a portrait that brings him closer to his subject. The narratives that are collaged create bonds between his practice through the process and the relationship of the artist to his sitter. As text is layered the words, lines and phrases are repeated and embedded into the work creating a unifying physicality.
