Common Symptoms of Skin Rash from Poison Oak Ivy

A large majority of people are affected from exposure to poison oak ivy plants causing a skin rash. The oil in their leaves, vines and roots (even dead plants), called urushiol (oil), causes a skin reaction or skin rash after exposure. Some people are only lightly affected, while others can become quite ill and incredibly uncomfortable. It all depends on the particular person’s individual body’s systemic at the time of the individual’s exposure.

Poison oak ivy symptoms are usually identified by a very intense itchy spot on one’s skin, along with a skin rash and possibly skin blisters. They can be very tiny, with just a few tiny bumps or blisters. Or, depending on the expsoure, the itchiness can be body-wide, with huge poison ivy and oak blisters and rash. Normally, the rash shows up where the skin has been exposed to the poison oak ivy leaves, vines or roots, and the urushiol oil of the plant has had a chance to be absorbed.

A poison oak ivy infection, or serious reaction can be deadly. It is important to see your doctor if the rash and blisters are widespread. It is also very important to try to reduce the itchiness, especially with children, so that the rash and blisters are not constantly scratched.

Poison Oak Ivy Treatments, Cures, Remedies

There are numerous poison oak ivy treatments that can help ease the itchiness, and dry up the rash and blisters. Yet, there are not too many poison oak ivy “cures.” There are a handful of products that claim to stop the itching and clearup the blisters as fast as 48 hours.

Since these nasty plants have been with us for hundreds of years, there are a huge amount of poison oak ivy remedies and “old wives tales” to go along with them. We have listed several on our website. Always use with caution.

One of the most popular and widely used poison oak ivy treatment is Caladryl. Although it is recommended, it is also widely reported as being “no help with poison ivy rash or poison oak itchiness.”

It is extremely difficult to be completely protected from these poisonous plants. Once the oil has made contact with your clothes, shoes (even animal’s or pet’s fur), it stays active literally forever.

One of the best ways to protect yourself is to Stay Away From It!

Identifying Poison Oak Ivy Leaves, Bushes and Vines

If you can remember this little verse …

“Leaves of Three, Let it Be”

and

“If You See White, Danger’s in Sight”
(regarding the white berries)

You can keep these verses in mind while hiking in the woods, gardening, when walking around the edges of a field, or other likely places these nasty plants like to grow. Another way is to study these Poison Oak Ivy Pictures on our website and on the top of our sidebar — and Stay Away From Them …

In the poison oak ivy picture above, you can see that the poison oak and poison ivy have a broader leaf than the summac. In the summer the leaves are lighter color and gradually get a darker green intensity. In the fall, in some areas, the leaves will turn red or yellow.

Poison oak usually grows in the north western area of the United States, as well as southern areas of Canada. Although, it can be found in patches throughout the US. It normally does not grow in high altitude.

It usually grows as a vine climbing up the trunks of oak and sycamore trees. Poison oak can also form dense thickets of bushes. It is very similar to poison ivy.

Poison Ivy is found throughout the United States, in low altitudes under 5000 feet. It is considered a “vine” and can be found growing or climbing trees. It also will grow in patches on the ground, and in dense bushes. Many times you can find poison ivy at the edge of the woods or the edge of farm fields. Worse, yet, it is happy to grow in your garden.

Safely Get Rid of Poison Oak Ivy Plants

Your first step in getting rid of these nasty plants is to know how to identify them. The old saying “leaves of three, let them be” can help you greatly. Yet, you may wish to view the Identify Poison Oak Ivy Videos we have posted.

When getting rid of these dangerous plants, you will also wish to dress appropriately. You DO NOT want to get the Urushiol Oil from the plants that causes allergic reaction rashes on your skin anywhere.

Therefore, it is highly suggested that you wear protective gloves, long pants, socks, shoes (not sandles!), and a long sleeved shirt too.

Manual Ways to Get Rid of Poison Ivy or Poison Oak Plants

Once you are appropriately attired (see above), you can begin a manual way of ridding your yard of these plants. There are a few different ways to approach this:

Pull the plants out totally from the ground, including its roots. Then get rid of the plants — But Never Ever Ever Burn Poison Oak Ivy Plants. The Smoke / Fumes is highly poisonous and can cause incredible physical damage. Instead, wrap the plants in newspaper or packing paper and tape up.

Smother Poison Oak Ivy Plants. Another manual way to get rid of poison oak or ivy plants that are not climbing trees, is to smother them. This method is can work, yet you must be very patient and very watchful for re-occurance because the dead plants can still be poisonous and they can return years later!

First, cut back the plants to the ground. Then cover the ground area with an old carpet, cardboard or tarps. Be very careful when checking on the smothering action when pulling up the smothering product. Even the dead plants have the toxic oil within them. Once it is determined they are dead, pull out the dead roots and dispose of them.

The above two ways to kill and get rid of the poison oak ivy plants can be completed anytime of the year, except when the ground is frozen.

Herbicides to Get Rid of Poison Ivy or Poison Oak Plants

The best time to use Herbicides like Ortho (triclopyr) or Roundup (glyphosate) is during the growing season.

One way to use herbicides is to cut the plants back to about two inches above ground, then using a can of herbicide spray the still “live” poison oak or ivy plants stumps. This will allow the fresh cuts to pull in the killer herbicide and kill the plant faster.

Another way to use herbicides is to use a herbicide sprayer and spray the flowering leaves of the poison oak or poison ivy plants. This will probably need to be done many times until the plants are dead, yet this is a good way to get rid of a huge patch of these nasty plants. Or, to get rid of these plants growing on walls or up trees.

Once the plants are dead, remove them carefully, yet Do Not Burn Poison Oak or Poison Ivy Plants.

Cure for Poison Oak Ivy Rash

There are very few toxic plant reaction “cures.” Most of the treatments available help with the extensive itching so that the rash can run it’s course, yet not bother you as much. There are a few poison oak ivy “cures” that people claim helps their rash clear up within 24 to 48 hours. We will discuss several below:

You can apply a salt paste (mix salt and water to form a paste), and spread on your poison oak ivy rash, rubbing it slightly. Allow to dry, then brush away the salt. This is reported to help with the itching and also helps dry up the blisters within a few days. Do this salt paste remedy two to three times a day. Your rash may clear up within two days.

Rub the rash and blisters with the inside of a banana peel. Do this two to three times a day. The itching should stop quickly and the rash may clear up within two to three days.

A widely accepted poison oak ivy “cure” is to use the stems of Jewel Weed by breaking off the plant and rubbing the open stem over the skin rash. Others boil the leaves and soak a cloth in the concoction, then lay the cloth on their affected area. Jewel Weed is supposed to neutralize the poison of the urushiol oil. See the video below for more information on Jewel Weed and Poison Plants remedies.

An alcohol rub has been reported to stop the itching and help dry up the poison oak ivy blisters quickly, within a day or two — although it can sting quite a bit.

Take a break and go to the beach when you have a poison oak ivy rash outbreak. People have reported that when they go to the beach and soak in the ocean for 15 to 30 minutes, then lie out in the warm sun, their rash stops itching and clears up fast.

Swimming in a “very chlorinated” pool, one that has been “shocked” recently, has been widely reported to completely clearup poison oak or poison ivy rash almost overnight. The combination of the cool water and chlorine may be attributed to the fast relief of the poison oak ivy rash itch, as well as the drying up of the blisters.

CAUTION – WARNING

Use the following poison oak ivy “cure” for poison oak or poison ivy rash symptoms at your own risk.

Dab chlorine bleach on the poison oak ivy rash and blisters. It is reported as being very effective in stopping the itch and clearing up the rash almost overnight. Many also report intense pain while dabbing the bleach over open blisters though. You may wish to use the Swimming Pool remedy for poison oak ivy treatment instead. As an alternative, you may wish to us 1 part chlorine bleach to 3 parts water for the “dabbing.”

Identifying Poison Oak Ivy Symptoms

The normal poison oak ivy symptoms include developing an intense itching of the skin and redness in the areas of skin that has been exposed to the poison oak or ivy urushiol oil found on the plants leaves, vines and roots. This occurs approximately 24 to 48 hours after exposure. For some people, it happens faster, others may take a longer time to develop the redness.

After the itching and redness appears, a rash of the area(s) follow. Then small to large blisters may form, and then begin oozing.

How fast and how intense the reaction of the exposure all depends on the particular person’s individual body’s systemic at the time of the individual’s exposure.

Problems Identifying Poison Oak Ivy Symptoms

There are sometimes problems in identifying poison oak ivy symptoms in that many people are unaware they have been exposed to the poisonous plants. Since the symptoms may not appear until 48 hours after exposure, they may not associate the “walk in the woods” or even gardening that may have occured a few days prior.

Another problem is the rash can be misdiagnosed. If the rash only appears in a small area, many people believe they have received a “spider bite,” a chiggers attack, or an unusual “bug bite.” They may also believe the symptoms may be an allergic reaction to something else, rather than to the poison oak ivy exposure.

One misdiagnosis that occurs often is the rash may identified as “shingles.” Or, sometimes worse, “shingles” could be misdiagnosed as poison oak or poison ivy symptoms.

We say “or worse” because treatment for “shingles” is entirely different than treatment for poison plant symptoms. In addition, non-treatment of “shingles” can lead to far worse after-effects (sometimes), than non-treatment of poison oak or ivy rashes. Therefore, if your rash develops first on your back, begins to wrap around the front of one side of your body you may have “shingles.” (Shingles actually can develop anywhere on your body, yet it usually is on one side, and follows nerves). Also if you KNOW you have not been exposed to poison oak, poison ivy or summac, then you may have “shingles.”

How Long Poison Oak Ivy Symptoms Last

The normal course of poison oak and poison ivy symptoms usually last about two weeks. Although some people clear up faster and others may take longer to heal.

Remedies for Poison Oak Ivy Rash

The irritating poison oak ivy skin reactions have been reported or recorded since the first settlers came to the United States in the 1600’s. Therefore there are numerous old time, home remedies that have also been applied and written about. Unfortunately, just like the reaction differs from person to person, so does the effectiveness of the poison oak ivy remedies

Poison Oak Ivy Home Remedies

A remedy the settlers did not have access to was Caladryl lotion, one of the most recommended treatments to use by doctors — even though it is reported by many that it does not help or work.

What the settlers did have access to was salt. You can apply a salt paste (mix salt and water to form a paste), and spread on your poison oak ivy rash, rubbing it slightly. Allow to dry, then brush away the salt. This is reported to help with the itching and also helps dry up the blisters. Do this salt paste remedy two to three times a day.

Another very effective poison oak ivy remedy is to rub the rash and blisters with the inside of a banana peel. Do this two to three times a day. The itching should stop quickly and the rash may clear up within two to three days.

A widely accepted poison oak ivy remedy is to use the stems of Jewel Weed by breaking off the plant and rubbing the open stem over the skin rash. Others boil the leaves and soak a cloth in the concoction, then lay the cloth on their affected area. Jewel Weed is supposed to neutralize the poison of the urushiol oil. See the video below for more information on Jewel Weed and Poison Plants remedies.

An alcohol rub has been reported to stop the itching and help dry up the poison oak ivy blisters quickly — although it can sting quite a bit.

Hit the Beach when you have a poison oak ivy rash outbreak. People have reported that when they go to the beach and soak in the ocean for 15 to 30 minutes, then lie out in the warm sun, their rash stops itching and clears up faster.

Go swimming in a well chlorinated pool, preferrably one that has recently been “shocked” by chlorine. The combination of the cool water and chlorine may be attributed to the fast relief of the poison oak ivy rash itch, as well as the drying up of the blisters.

CAUTION – WARNING

Use the following home remedy for poison oak or poison ivy rash symptoms at your own risk.

Many people report dabbing chlorine bleach on their poison oak ivy rash as very effective in stopping the itch and clearing up the rash almost overnight. Many also report intense pain while dabbing the bleach over open blisters though. You may wish to use the Swimming Pool remedy for poison oak ivy treatment instead.
