Foot binding is an old Chinese tradition in which young girls' feet were wrapped tightly to prohibit their feet from growing. The custom originated in imperial China in the 10th or 11th century and was seen as a sign of beauty amongst wealthy women. For them, this was the equivalent of being decked out in the Remy weave women wear today. Although foot binding began as a status symbol, it eventually spread throughout the culture- even to those who lacked wealth.

The process began for little girls around the age of three. Their toes were fractured and from that point, their mothers would tightly wrap their feet with linen cloth to prevent growth. This process forced a girl's toes downward towards the sole of her feet, causing them to form in a concave like manner. This practice was so common that usually any woman who did not partake in this custom would have a hard time finding a husband.

Result of foot binding.

Foot binding was not neccessarily a healthy practice and had many efffects on the women with bounded feet. Most of the women with bounded feet had trouble walking and doing many of the everyday household duties. They also experienced difficulty when working in the fields. Additionally, they experienced lower bone density in the hip and spine than women with normal feet. This practice was outlawed in the early 20th Century, but was still being secretely practiced by many women. It has pretty much totally been phased out by now, but the effects of this practice can still be seen by older women in their 70s and 80s.

Incredible technology. I am interested in the side effects of this technology though. It still being tested. I am sure something will surface. This WILL revolutionize medicine and save many lives. This will also prevent many of the self-esteem issues burn victims go through. I am sure burn victims who were not fortunate enough to utilize this technology would give all they had to do so.

It comes out looking like this.

There’s more: because it’s crawling with bacteria, it will be washed with ammonia, soaked in it, actually. Then, because it tastes gross, it will be re flavored artificially. Then, because it is weirdly pink, it will be dyed with artificial color.

Think about that next time you pull through the drive thru or feed your kids fast food."

You know I had to do it! I am a big fan of Pharrell and appreciate HIS appreciation for other genres of music and forms of art. He brings more to the table than just his creativity in hiphop and I am excited for the launch of his new brand, " I Am Other". This video is definitely inspiring as I see myself in his shoes soon. My goal is to do this and more! So, without further ado, here is Pharrell and the HMI Orchestra!

I enjoy seeing things like this, I just hope that this kid gets credit for his work seeing as to how many of our brown skinned friends don't.

I've been meaning to blog about this for a while now, but as you see I am just now getting around to it. A few months ago, I did a post on male AKA's and was also introduced to a LESBIAN fraternity called Alpha Psi Kappa. I spent some time on their website to see what they were about and stumbled upon a couple more LGBT organizations. This collection of organizations is referred to as the "Tau Kappa Phi Family" and seems to be centered around community service and outreach. They aim to contribute to the community without their sexuality defining who they are.......or at least that is what I get from it. According to the site, there are 3 organizations in this bond which include Kappa Psi Kappa Fraternity, Inc., Phi Nu Kappa Sorority, Inc., and Alpha Psi Kappa Fraternity, Inc. Kappa Psi Kappa was founded first in 2001 in Florida. The other two were founded on the campus of Florida State University in 2002. Kappa Psi Kappa is actually for males. I am not sure if it is for gay males, but I assume so based on the looks of the other organizations; however, it does not "specifically" state anywhere that it is. Alpha Psi Kappa was created for dominant lesbians. Phi Nu Kappa of course was founded for feminine lesbians. Phi Nu Kappa actually seems to be the most organized of the 3 organizations.

I am sure there are other organizations out there similar to this, I just happened to find out about these. I find this very interesting though. I'm not knocking it. Everyone belongs somewhere. This organization is very young though, so I am curious to see how this grows. I'm glad to see that they participate in community service and other outreach projects. I'm sure that with time, the structure of the org. will develop and I wouldn't be surprised to see this on a college campus in the future. Seeing things like this just blows my mind, and not in a bad way. It just shows you that there are so many other dimensions of life and that people are apart of so many different worlds. Sometimes we get so caught up in what we do that we don't realize or get exposed to the other things that exist in the world. I'm sure a few folks will laugh at this, but I give them props for having the courage to start something like this up. At least they didn't disrespect the D9 frats/sorors by claiming to be apart of any of those entities.

Everyone knows if I post music on here that it is usually something eclectic and/or off the wall. I also only see fit to post music about some of the most slept on musicians, artists, or whatever suits your perception. A few weeks back, I went to Time Lounge in Norfolk, VA and got the chance to expose my ears to music that was so good that I couldn't even believe I was in Virginia! That night, I stumbled upon an amazing voice. 'Twas the voice of Nakia Madry-Smith. She recently dropped an album at the top of the year. Check it out and buy it. It's worth it.
