Are you one of our Pocket World fans in Australia? Or are you going there on holiday soon? Well you’re in for a real Pokémon treat – in June McDonalds is offering Pokémon toys and trading cards in their Happy Meals! These are similar to the toys released through McDonalds around the world last year – you get a choice of Pignite, Servine, Dewott and of course everyone’s favourite Pikachu.

Exciting stuff for all Pokémon fans! Just make sure to choose the carrot sticks instead of the French Fries (yeah, right!).

There’s a wealth of toys, videogames and four series of the anime cartoon out there!

Playing now on Cartoon Network and just arrived on CiTV is the new Bakugan: Mechtanium Surge series, with toys from Spinmaster to match! This series contains 46 action-packed episodes! Dan and his friends have new enemies: Team Anubias and Team Sellon. To make matters worse, Dan loses control of his best friend and Guardian Bakugan, Drago, putting the entire team in jeopardy. Meanwhile, the new enemies are secretly building an army of Chaos Bakugan to take over the world.

Bakugan has received its fair share of awards and accolades around the world – it was named the 2008 and 2009 toy Property of the Year. If that’s not cool enough, there are plenty of fantastic accessories for brawlers to collect: Bakugan launchers, battle arenas and carry cases to name a few. Brawling in style has never been so much fun!

Not played Bakugan before? It’s an epic strategy game: players battle with their friends using Bakugan brawlers and cards to claim victory. When two Bakugan roll on to the same metal Gate Card a battle ensues! Each Bakugan has its own attack power called ‘G-Power’ – a Bakugan’s G-Power can be boosted by combining with Gate Cards, Ability Cards, Traps and Battle Gear. The Bakugan with the highest G-Power wins the battle – the first player to capture three Gate Cards wins the game of Bakugan.

It’s amazing Bakugan is already on its fourth series! Bakugan Battle Brawlers started all the way back in 2008 – the game and anime series were released in tandem and were an instant hit! Bakugan are monsters from an alternate universe known as Vestroia. There are many great Bakugan to brawl and collect – check back next issue for more exciting news on Mechtanium Surge!

Hi George, nice to hear from you. Unfortunately, there isn’t an easy answer to catching a Shiny Pokémon; it can be very challenging. There is only a 1 in 8,192 chance of encountering one in the wild. In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl you could use the Poké Radar to improve your chances of encountering a Shiny Pokémon, but that’s no longer an option in Pokémon Black. You can increase your chances of hatching a Shiny Pokémon through breeding; you’ll have to trade with someone with a game in a different language. Hatching an egg between two Pokémon from different-language cartridges increases your chances of encountering a Shiny Pokémon to 1 in 1,365.3. Be sure to always have plenty of Ultra Balls with you in case you ever run into one in the wild, as this is a rare opportunity that you won’t want to miss!

Q

Dear Professor Yew,
I am stuck on Pokémon SoulSilver. I can’t wake up Snorlax. I checked on the Internet and it said I need the Poké Flute that is on the radio on the Poké Gear. I go to Snorlax and check my radio, but there is no Poké Flute. Please can you help me?
Cahir, Age 10

A

Many thanks for your letter, Cahir. You’re doing everything right, except it sounds like you’re missing the Radio Card. To obtain it, visit the Radio Tower in Lavender City; an old man will run up to you and give you the Radio Card. With the Radio Card in hand, head to Snorlax, open the Radio and move the station to the top, using the touch screen to select the Poké Flute. You should now be able to wake up Snorlax and be on your merry way.

Q

Dear Professor Yew,
I am stuck in Pokémon White. Now that I finished catching the Seven Sages I have nothing to do. Therefore number one of my questions is: is there anything interesting to do after catching the Seven Sages? Also, my second problem is that I heard you can catch Pokémon like Shroomish, Ralts and many other Pokémon in White Forest. Sadly, the only ones I find are Wurmple, Slakoth and Aron. Please help me!
Piotr Zoledowski, Age 12, London

A

Hi Piotr, thanks for your letter. There’s plenty to do after you’ve beaten Pokémon White. If you haven’t done so already, you can visit the Battle Subway and hone up on your battling skills. Pokémon battles will be tougher – all Trainers you face will have at least Level 60 Pokémon and the Pokémon of the Elite Four will be above Level 70. You can visit Opelucid City and head east towards the Giant Chasm, where you can catch the Legendary Pokémon Kyurem. You can visit Undella Town and speak to a girl who will give you HM06 Dive; you can then dive nearby to acquire all of Arceus’s plates. There are a lot of cool Pokémon to catch in White Forest, but you’ll need to do a bit of work to make them appear. The wild Pokémon that appear depend on the number of residents in White Forest; the longer it takes the player to reach White Forest, the more residents. To unlock new Pokémon, you can use the Entralink with your mates to increase the number of residents. You should then be able to catch Ralts and other Pokémon.

Q

Dear Prof Yew,
I’d just like to ask will Misty ever come back? Because personally I think Misty is the best Pokémon girl ever. PS. I absolutely love Pokémon.
Rose Burbidge, Age 11, Brighton

A

Many thanks for your letter, Rose. Misty’s appearances have been few and far between since her departure a few years ago from the anime. Her last few appearances were in the Advanced Generation series, including a cameo in the ‘Mastermind of the Mirage Pokémon’ special. Never say never, but it doesn’t look like Misty will be appearing any time soon. If you’d like to enjoy a few more Misty appearances, be sure to check out the Pokémon Chronicles episodes to see what Misty is up to these days at the Cerulean City Gym.

Q

Dear Professor Yew,
I know there’s a lot of strong Pokémon, but which Pokémon is the best? Is it Arceus?
Anon, via email

A

Thank you for your letter. You’re right, Arceus is very powerful; it has the highest total base stat out of any Pokémon. The major downside is that Arceus is a Legendary Pokémon; it’s alright to use Arceus against your friends, but it’s banned from Nintendo tournaments. When building a Pokémon team it’s important to build a well-balanced team and not concentrate on one Pokémon; every Pokémon is powerful in its own way with the right moves and strategy. Happy training!

Q

Dear Professor Yew,
I am a super, ultra, mega fan of Pokémon. I have Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, SoulSilver and White. I have a question. I put my Excadrill in the Dream World and I have put lots of other Pokémon in the Dream World before, but it was the first time I ever went to the haunted house place. I befriended a Houndour and I took lots of items back, but when I tried to return it to my game, it said ‘ERROR CODE 31020’ and it’s the same error code with the mystery gift. I changed the router channel, but it still doesn’t work. Can you help me, please? Please publish this in Pokémon World magazine.
Duncan McLachlan, Age 11, Stonehouse, Scotland

A

Hi Duncan, thank you for your wonderful letter. It seems like a lot of Pokémon gamers are having this error message in their games. It could be related to a couple of things. Your router may be the issue: try enabling the DMZ feature or changing the TCP timeout value to greater than five minutes. If you recently downloaded a C-Gear Skin, try changing it back to the previous skin and see if your Pokémon will wake up. This error seems to be widespread; hopefully Nintendo will come out with a patch for it soon!

Pokémon evolution isn’t as straightforward as it once was. Back in the first generation, most Pokémon evolved when they reached a certain level, with a select few evolving via elemental stones and trade. With each passing generation, new ways of evolving are introduced. Evolution is vital to any Pokémon team – Pokémon get more powerful and learn new moves through evolution. One of the most common questions that our dear, esteemed Professor Yew gets asked is how does a certain Pokémon evolve. This comprehensive guide will explore every single way that Pokémon evolve in the fifth-generation games and before. Let’s take a look!

LEVELLING UP
Levelling up is the best known and most widespread way Pokémon evolve. Pokémon gain levels through experience points from battles or by using Rare Candy. When a Pokémon has reached a certain level it will attempt to evolve. For example, when the Grass-type starter Snivy reaches Level 17 it will attempt to evolve into Servine. Although it’s usually recommended to allow your Pokémon to evolve at the first opportunity, delaying evolution is sometimes beneficial since your Pokémon may learn more powerful attacks at earlier levels.

HAPPINESS
Have you ever wondered how happy your Pokémon are? With certain Pokémon their happiness is vital if you want them to evolve – their happiness will have to reach level 220 to evolve. Most Pokémon that evolve via happiness are baby Pokémon. Pokémon that evolve when their happiness is maxed out include Cleffa, Igglybuff and Pichu.

LEVELLING UP WITH A SPECIFIC MOVE
In the fourth generation of Pokémon games a new method of evolution was introduced: move-induced evolution. Although it is uncommon, a select group of Pokémon will only evolve when they gain a level with a specific move. Certain moves are learned through levelling up, while other moves need to be taught via the reminder girl in Mistralton City. Pokémon that evolve via this method are Aipom (evolves into Ambipom when it learns Double Hit) and Tangela (evolves into Tangrowth when it learns AncientPower).

EEVEE – THE EVOLUTION POKÉMON
With a total of seven evolutions, Eevee holds the record for the most evolutions of any Pokémon. Eevee started with only three evolutions: Vaporeon, Jolteon and Flareon in the first generation. In the second generation Eevee got a Psychic and a Dark evolution: Espeon and Umbreon. Finally, two new evolutions were introduced in the fourth generation: Leafeon and Glaceon. No wonder they call Eevee the evolution Pokémon!

Eevee #133 Normal > Vaporeon #134 Water
Eevee #133 Normal > Jolteon #135 Electric
Eevee #133 Normal > Espeon #196 Pyschic
Eevee #133 Normal > Umbreon #197 Dark
Eevee #133 Normal > Leafeon #470 Grass
Eevee #133 Normal > Glaceon #471 Ice

LOCATION
Most Trainers aren’t concerned about where they train their Pokémon – the only thing that matters is they gain the most experience possible. With a limited number of Pokémon, where you train them is crucial, as they only evolve if you train them in a select location. Only three Pokémon evolve this way: Eevee (evolves into Leafeon at Moss Rock and Glaceon at Ice Rock), Magneton (evolves into Magnezone at Mt Coronet and Chargestone Cave) and Nosepass (evolves at Mt Coronet).

HOLDING AN ITEM
Held items were first introduced in the second game generation. Not only is it helpful to attach an item to your Pokémon to give it the decisive edge in battle, select Pokémon can also evolve while holding certain items. Pokémon evolve with held items in one of two ways: being traded while holding an item or gaining a level with a held item. Pokémon that evolve when traded include Electabuzz (holding the Electrizer) and Porygon2 (holding the Dubious Disc). Pokémon that evolve via levelling up include Gligar (holding the Razor Fang at night) and Happiny (holding the Oval Stone during the day).

TIME-SPECIFIC EVOLUTION
Pokémon Gold and Silver were the brilliant games that introduced the concept of night and day in the Pokémon series. Night and day didn’t just mean your game got dark outside in the evening, it also meant that certain Pokémon only evolved at a certain point in the day. Time isn’t the only factor – your Pokémon will also have to be holding
a specific item or will have to reach the maximum happiness level. Pokémon that exclusively evolve at night include Chingling, Gligar and Sneasel. Pokémon that exclusively evolve during the day include Budew, Happiny and Riolu.

ELEMENTAL STONES
Elemental stones are probably the best known evolution method besides levelling up. Pikachu may have refused a Thunderstone, but it’s wise to evolve your Pokémon if you plan to use them against your mates. It’s recommended that you wait until your Pokémon has learned its entire move repertoire before evolving it via a stone, otherwise it could miss out on powerful moves. With each passing generation, a new evolution stone seems to be introduced. So far there are ten elemental stones: Fire Stone, Water Stone, Thunderstone, Leaf Stone, Moon Stone, Sun Stone, Shiny Stone, Dusk Stone, Dawn Stone and Everstone. Pokémon that evolve with elemental stones include Poliwhirl (evolves into Poliwrath via the Water Stone) and Clefairy (evolves into Clefable via the Moon Stone).

TRADE-INDUCED EVOLUTION
Trading Pokémon with your mates is an excellent way to acquire new Pokémon, in more ways than one. Some Pokémon exclusively evolve through trading. For example, Machoke will evolve into Machamp when traded. The fifth game generation has turned up trade-induced evolution a notch – instead of being able to trade for any Pokémon, certain Pokémon only evolve when traded with another Pokémon. For example, when you trade a Kerrablast with a Shelmet, Kerrablast will evolve into Escavalier, while Shelmet will evolve into Accelgor.

OTHER METHODS OF EVOLUTION
Here are other unique ways Pokémon evolve…

Mantyke #458 > Mantine #226
• Mantyke will evolve into Mantine when it levels up if you have a Remoraid active in your party.

If Doc Brown can pull it off you may be playing with LEGO Back to the Future figures this Christmas! There’s an official LEGO website called Cuusoo where fans can submit ideas to the LEGO bigwigs for new sets. Clever fans even create what the sets could look like using their own LEGO bits and pieces. Well a clever chap called Masashi put forward his plans for a LEGO Back to the Future set and it has already received over 10,000 supporters. This is the magic number (not 88mph) that means that the idea goes to the LEGO review phase where the boffins over in LEGO HQ Denmark start running the numbers and asking the nice people who made the film if they can do it!

On the Cuusoo website Masashi commets, “I’m a huge fan of the Back to the Future series, I even remember it as the first movie I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been in love with the series ever since! When I was a child I tried many times to build the DeLorean Time Machine, however, the project was a difficult one because I lacked some specific LEGO bricks and minifigures. Now, my dream is to create a Back to the Future themed series through LEGO Cuusoo.”

Well Masashi, we all hope that dream comes true. Remember… “if you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything.”
