The one interesting note was this was my boy Ed's and I first time to head to a casino where he would put his blackjack strategy in place.<br /><br />To set the day, I have to tell you I HATE going to poker with a friend in tow that doesn't also play poker. And even if they do play poker, if they aren't in it for the long haul, it still makes for a miserable poker experience. Since Ed doesn't play poker, I knew this would be a short trip. He headed to the high roller black jack area, I headed over to the low roller 1-2 NL table.<br /><br />I don't remember much about the poker. There were only a few tables in this room. I don't even really remember playing many hands and definitly don't remember any standout hands. I played just a bit, collected my chip and got out of there. I headed over to the blackjack area (who gambles?) to find Ed. He was playing anywhere from $25 to $75 a hand. He actually did well. I don't remember the exact number, but I know he ended up a few hundred.<br /><br />It's actually very cute as he has (or at least had) an excel spreadsheet that he tracked all his play. He truly thinks he can beat the game. I'm already in the middle of my long drive back to Mississippi, I'm not really in the mood to spend a lot of time in crappy poker rooms. I'm blind as it is (left my glasses at the big Iowa truck stop) and tired of driving. Plus I know I'm going to stop at the excellent Gold Strike when I go through Tunica.<br /><br />As I bored this boat (more like a submarine in the poker room) I'm shown the poker room....well poker aisle. The tables are pushed up against the wall single file. I quickly find a seat at the stud table and begin playing. Chips are begrudingly put in the pot (stud isn't exactly a pot splasher) and I'm paying more attention to the Rams game on the tv then I am the game. As I watch the Rams game I realize the game is almost over. Maybe like 2 minutes to go or something like that. I start thinking to myself, "Games almost over. Thousands of people will be leaving this game being held in downtown St. Louis. Thank God I'm not on the road when those people..........holy crap!"<br /><br />That's right, if I didn't leave immediately I would be stuck in post game traffic. As these thoughts are running through my mind I am dealt rolled up 4s. Sweet. <br /><br />Sweet Jesus, I've got to get on the road. So I start raising. Let's win this pot and cash out and get on the road. Beat these Rams fans. A couple of other people decide to join in on the pot splashing fun. Now, if you like bad beat stories......this is not for you.<br /><br />On 5th street the case 4 hits my board and I'm swimming in quatros! Both opponents see me down to the river and I scoop up a very nice little pot. I immediatly rack up and cash out (I've got to get on the road). Of course there are a few grumblings when I do this, but who cares? It's not your money (anymore). This is why I love cash games instead of tournaments. When I got there around 11:00pm it was some sight. Driving up and around this massive horse track is just a bit different to someone who is used to the bright flashy lights of a casino.<br /><br />Once inside, I find out quickly that it is against the law in Minnessota to spread any no limit games. I saw some no limit tournaments, but it was explained that cash games were limit only. If I remember correctly, they did have some spread limit games, but I was not interested in that. With a long late night drive ahead of me, I figured I'd play my old favorite: 7 card stud.<br /><br />I'm glad I did because an unusual occurance happened. With the mix of New Year's and my favorite poker game something quirky was bound to happen. As the dealer is dealing out the last hand of 2004, a nice gentleman sitting directly across from me in the #1 seat ends up with trip deuces showing on his board. Needless to say he wins the pot with no showdown.<br /><br />With that being the last hand, the card room hands out complimentary glasses of champagne, the eight strangers at the table all clink glasses and wish the very best for 2005. Then, on the next hand (the first hand of 2005) the exact same guy ends up with trip deuces showing on his board. Remarkable! I quickly glance his way and say, "Well, looks like 2005 is going to look exactly the same as 2004 for you!". A good laugh was had by all.<br /><br />After a few more hands played, I called it a night. I was deathly tired from the flight and needed to start heading back to Mississippi.<br /><br />What I remember most of this casino (besides the crazy repeat hands) was the chips themselves. Our $1-5 7-Card Stud game played with the light blue $1 chips and the high yellow $2 chips. They were all very new chips with a nice inset. Overall a great card room that I would have recommended to anyone at the time (with the exception of not spreading no-limit hold 'em).
