Here at BugsysClub, we would like to give you some ideas of what to expect when you first start playing online poker tournaments.

Our online poker tournaments are, in actuality, virtual card rooms. There are some major differences and there are some subtle ones between online tournaments and live card room tournaments. Learning to play online will give you an advantage over a beginning player who
walks into a card room cold. For many, the computer is a frightening new frontier and one they wish not to challenge. You on the other hand, are taking charge of your "poker playing" career or hobby and using BugsysClub, as a wonderful pivot point to catapult you into being a tournament winner online and off.After you have joined your first tournament, sit back and relax in the comfort of your own home (no shirt or shoes required!). Wear what suits you best. Place your favorite food and beverage by your side. Turn on your favorite music, sporting event or movie. If you prefer, simply enjoy the jingling of the poker chips as they are played. You even have the option of silencing the game sounds from your playing area, if desired. Even bouncing a toddler on your knee, if you fancy doing that, is A-OK in your virtual card room. If you get a little hot under the collar, you can even talk to your computer. Tell it how you feel. The big thing to remember is...DON'T TYPE IT! Simple enough.The software used to play the online tournaments, gives you several options for socializing online. One of them is a chat area. This allows you to interact with the other players at your table and/or with the occasional observer. If you don't wish to talk to anyone or see what's being said, you can turn the chat function off.

Seeing the action as it unfolds in the chat window is another option. If you don't care about what each player has done, or how the hand is progressing, you can turn that function off. Also, there are several ways you may set up your chat room. It is completely up to you and your own preferences.

Many actions are automatically computer-driven. This means you have no control over them. They will be taken care of by the computer software. After you have joined the tournament, all seating arrangements will be randomly selected by the software, you will be assigned a seat, the tournament will begin at the stated time, and you will have your table in front of you on the screen.

The tournament software places the button, which indicates the dealer, in the same position at the beginning of each new tournament. In a live casino type card room, the button is chosen by either dealing a random card to each player or having each player draw a card. The player with the highest card will be the button (dealer).

In BugsysClub tournaments, the button will always start in the number 10 seat, but players' seating is random. When the tournament begins, the "blinds" will always be in the number 1 and 2 seat. The blinds are the 2 players to the left of the button. They place bets prior to getting cards, so as to create betting action. In essence, they are betting "in the blind". The play always moves in a clockwise direction.

As an online tournament player, you will never have to manually post your blinds. The computer will do that for you. There is no way to make an incorrect "blind" bet, as the computer will not allow you to. In a structured tournament, the computer will not let you put too much or too little money out as your bet. You can hit the fold button instead of the raise button, but then, that would be a function of the "oops factor."Since the computer will place your bet neatly in front of you on the table, there is no fear of accidentally splashing the pot by tossing your bet into it. This alone, will save you from a moment of "beginners" embarrassment. Another thing the computer wont let you do is "string bet." It will simply make your call and raise in one smooth action.

In an offline card room, due to nervousness, lack of experience and sometimes ignorance, a player will call a bet and then reach back into his stack and say raise. If you want the entire table to come over the felt and wring your neck, just try this one time! A call and raise must be made in one movement. And for you, the online player, the computer will be very obliging.

There is a great feature that will allow you the option to muck a losing hand (turn face down and put in the discards). That way, you can show it if you want. If you were bluffing, and wanted the other players to know, you can take this opportunity and use it to your advantage. Or, if you would rather keep them guessing, you can choose to muck your losing hand. One great benefit of online tournament play is that you cannot fold out of turn, by accident. If you need to, you may hit the fold button and make a quick bathroom break while allowing the computer to toss your cards into the discard pile for you while you are absent.

There are a few things that can go awry when playing online tournaments. The BOOT, will be very infuriating for you. You might be right in the middle of what seems to be the best hand you've ever been dealt in your life, and suddenly you are no longer online. If you have placed money into the pot and everyone calls, you will still be in the game. However, IF another bet is made, and the action comes to you and you "time out" because you are no longer present, the computer will automatically fold your hand and you will lose the amount of money you have previously placed in the pot. This might be one of the times you will have a "discussion" with your computer. Remember though, it will not be a discussion that any of the other players will want to hear about, once you get back into your seat.Another thing that is different when playing online, is the fact that you cannot see your opponent's face. Of course, that also means they cannot see you either. Tells, (body language) are not completely irrelevant when playing online, but it is not as easy to figure out your opponents. Not from a physical aspect, that is. You need to pay attention to the playing habits of the other players, not the physical "give a-ways." It is simple to develop a way to track the performance of the players you are playing with at each table. It is amazing the kinds of things you can learn about your opponents just by watching their play and recording it. Which players bluff more than others? Who likes to go "all in" in order to buy the blinds? Who raises, who calls a lot, who plays tight, who plays loose, and who is aggressive? This information will help you as you play more and more online tournaments with some of the same players.
Keeping track of your own style of play is easy to do, when playing online tournaments. Are you calling too much? Are you playing the starting hands in the inappropriate positions? Have you learned how to check raise with crisp confidence? Have you noticed who runs you over and have you determined how to correct it? Who have you found that you can dominate? How is your Heads Up play? What times of day do you play best? Keeping records, and tracking your performance, along with other players performance, will help keep you on task. This will help you to become a tougher competitor and teach you to pay attention to the subtle play that is missed by nearly everyone else you are playing against.

In conclusion, playing online poker tournaments can be very rewarding, as you can and will improve your game, to whatever level you desire. Practice makes perfect. A vast number of online "newbies" are taking that first step in trying their hand in real, brick and mortar, casino tournaments. Online practice has taken many players out of a shell of complete intimidation and placed them into an environment where they feel confident, skilled and ready to win. And you know what? THEY DO!

RIP Chip Reese by Doyle Brunson

Monday, December 17th

A week ago my phone rang at 5:30 a.m. I answered it extremely irritated at being awakened so early in the morning. My nephew, Ken Hale said, “I think Chip just died.”

It took a moment to sink in and then disbelief overtook me. How could my best friend, who was 56 years old and apparently in good health, be gone? It felt like a big hole in my body which could never be filled. I jumped out of bed and drove to Chip’s house as fast as I could.

I went into his house and cried with his children Brittany, Taylor, and Casey. Chip had gone to the doctor that afternoon and had a chest x-ray which showed a shadow on his lung. The doctor gave him a shot, told him he was coming down with pneumonia, and sent him home. The doctor, who was a poker player Chip had been teaching, called him at 10:00 to see how he was feeling. Chip told him he felt fine and when the doctor told him he was at the Red Rock Casino playing poker, Chip asked him if he wanted him to come watch him play. The doctor said, “No, if they saw you sitting behind me, they wouldn’t play with me any more.” They laughed and hung up.

Chip went to his room, talked to his girlfriend for 30 minutes, told his kids good night, and went to bed. Casey went to his room at 4:00 and Chip was dead.

We haven’t got the results of the autopsy yet but the coroner said it looked like a massive heart attack and that Chip died peacefully in his sleep. Chip had rheumatic fever when he was a child and it left his heart in a weakened state. Another theory was that because Chip had high cholesterol his veins were soft and when pneumonia starts the blood thickens and that was the reason for the heart attack. After I find out the reason of his death for sure, I will put it in a future blog.

Everyone knows what a great poker player Chip was. He played all the games as well and it seemed as though he would just refuse to lose. The man was just a winner in anything he did. I know he was the best player I have ever played against. He was one of my closest friends but we were fierce competitors at the tables. We didn’t take poker personally; we knew the object of the games was to win the other players’ chips. He was always a class act at the table, never losing his composure. Actually I can’t remember him raising his voice about anything. He was unbelievable.

He was also a class act outside of gambling. He was a devoted family man and loved watching his son play baseball. Casey is on scholarship at UNLV and is considered to be a top pro prospect.

If Chip had an enemy in the world I don’t know who it was. He was a generous guy who almost never said no to anyone who needed help. Chip and I invested in some really far out business ventures. We had race horses, TV stations, oil wells, mining companies, sports services, and diamonds. We even went looking for the Titanic and Noah’s Ark. None were successful and we always came back to poker.

All I know is that my buddy is gone and I can’t stop mourning over our loss. He was always there for me and my life will never be the same. There are no promises for tomorrow for any of us.

Chip said, “I will stop playing when you have my funeral. Then only God will know what I’ll be doing.” I’m sure God has a special place for a special guy like Chip.

1. Watch out for 'tilt'. It's easy to let your emotions take over at the table. Annoying players and bad beats can throw your concentration and ruin your game. Just close your eyes, count to ten, and re-focus.
2. Don't play too many hands. To start, you'll probably pay to see a lot of flops. That's cool. But when the stakes get higher, it's time to get clever with the cards. Be patient and wait until you're holding a strong hand before making a move.
3. Roll with it. It may be obvious but it's still a mistake that players make: don't play above your bankroll. You may score a few early wins but that doesn't make you the next Hellmuth (yet). Enjoy the ride and take your time to build that stack.

Gazes Stares Down Competition at Ladies Night

Congratulations to Full Tilt Poker's Kristy Gazes who claimed the title of WPT Ladies Night V Champion after defeating a star-studded final table that included defending champion JJ Liu along with Mimi Tran, Melissa Hayden, and Pam Brunson.
Gazes made quick work of the competition, grabbing the chip lead and knocking Liu out on the first hand of final-table play when her full house bested the defending champ's two-pair. Gazes never relinquished her lead, and took the title – along with a $25K entry to the WPT Championship – when her pocket Kings held up against Linda Johnson's pocket Jacks.
Kristy's victory earned her entry into an elite club of Ladies Night winners, including Team Full Tilt's Clonie Gowen, JJ Liu, Jennifer Tilly, and Isabelle Mercier.

The game becomes frustrating, and you start smashing your keyboard and throwing your mouse. You start to get nagging headaches when you play, and it seems as though your head is in a vice. You keep reading, playing and depositing, and nothing seems to be working.
Your health is deteriorating. You are getting behind at work and at home. People are starting to notice. Your deposits are getting larger and larger, and you are playing at stakes that are above your head, just hoping for one big score.
Sound familiar? The reality of the situation is that while there are some very successful players online, most players will end up as losing players. Should you start feeling yourself being addicted to poker, there are several steps that you should take, immediately.
1. Email the poker sites that you play at, and have them ban you. Include your name and alias at the poker site, and tell them that you want a permanent ban on your account.
2. Shut down your methods of depositing. Do you have a Neteller account that you use to fund your online poker account? An Epassporte account? Send them an email, telling them that you want your accounts to be permanently closed.
3. Give away your poker books. If you can't give them away, then recycle them. You don't want any thing around that will give you the temptation to start playing poker again.

You have your house, your kids, and your happy life; do you really want to give that up for a card game?

When we (my other half - Dealerman) first discovered this thing called on-line poker in 2004, it was just taking off, let me tell you - dealerman was hooked and we had dial up so all i would do was sit and watch him play and play and play..... i had always played Poker - you know at all the family functions, but never really got into to it cause i could never win ( i think my-in-laws cheated - lol) and would get mad and stomp away from the tables..
