Spoilers.

Season 5 is off to an awful start. Or is it just me?

Have I lost my sense of fun? Why can't I let some nonsense pass in order to enjoy the show? I do it for other shows, plenty of them. So, why can't I let Discovery have a pass.

I don't know.

Anyway. When sent on a crucial mission Burnham backs down to allow thieves, murderous thieves we learn later on, escape with vital technology.

How a two person scavenger shop can outclass two federation starships is never explained either

They escape using 20 decoy warp signals. Burnham does not use her ship's unique drive to instantly leap through all 20 endpoints which she could do in 20 seconds.

Instead she slinks back to base to pick up her boyfriend who correctly guesses the right one.

That could have been a email, right?

With two starships in orbit they can't locate the villains, allowing them to murder away and escape!

There's 1000 people on these ships so they send 3 people to the surface to find and capture 2 people.

Blah de blah they escape again on spacebikes (which could be picked off from space, surely) but not before stopping to try and kill thousands of people with a landslide and again they out pace two starships. One with an instant drive.

All this while Burnham has a direct order to use lethal force of necessary.

Bill is in the news again, more allegations of sexual harassment-no not Cosby- O'Reilly.

FOX has already spent $13,000,000 settling previous allegations against the "news" man but the latest allegations are a bridge too far - even for FOX- that bastion of truth.

It seems that Murdoch who owns FOX who owns O'Reilly is under scrutiny in Europe over a $13 Billion merger and that and the racial aspect of the latest allegations have forced Murdoch to push O'Reilly under the train of public opinion as advertisers started to pull their ads following the revelations.

This latest allegations follows settlements with five other women totaling about $13 million. That's a lot of money and a hell of a lot of repeated sexual harassment. Harassment that seemed to be tolerated by the culture at FOX- that is up until today.

So O'Reilly the man who exaggerated his intelligence, honesty and his role in reporting from the "warzone" on mainland Argentina during the Falklands war - some hundreds of miles away from the nearest combat.

O'Reilly's career is over but his legal woes are just beginning.

It's important to remember that not only is Putin a paper tiger militarily he is also a paper tiger economically. Russia's economy is only half that of the state of California.
When Turkey shot down a Russian plane Putin talked big (remember that?) But did nothing. NOTHING.

He huffs and puffs over Syria but he won't do anything more than huff and puff.

Worse again for him is the fact that Russia's economy is actually in serious decline and is built on Energy a stable that other countries are learning to get from renewable sources.

Trump has shown Putin to be an even bigger bluffer than he is.

That's praise from Caesar!

Donald Trump finally took action in Syria after seeing images of dead children; gassed by Assad.

Now can someone show him a picture of that dead child who drowned fleeing Assad's gas attacks and maybe Trump will rethink his ban on those victims too?

Like fascism, silly mustaches, goose steeps and open racism, 1930s style Jingoism is back in style!

And there's no bigger proponent of jingoism than the Tory Party under Theresa May. She almost jingos as she walks!

Today we have Lord Howard, former leader of the Tory Party compare Gibraltar to the Falklands and he was followed up by Rear-Adml Chris Parry, late of the Royal Navy who claims that the UK "could cripple Spain in the medium term and I think the Americans would probably support us too"

Lord Howard compared the squabble over the future of the Spanish tip to Margaret Thatcher’s Falklands war – as the Prime Minister offered reassurance to the people on The Rock that the UK was committed to them.

Now the fact that the "squabble" is caused by Brexit and that 96% of Gibraltar voted to REMAIN in the EU is ignored completely.

The fact that Spain is a NATO Ally and is no way hostile about the issue and is searching only for a political settlement to the issue is, again, ignored completely.

In fact it is a non-story or "fake news" designed to distract from the fact that the UK has no bargaining power left over Gibraltar, is facing a 50 Billion bill and will most likely have to stay under jurisdiction of EU courts and permit immigration just to keep the lights on in dealing with the EU.

The truth is that like Northern Ireland the UK really doesn't care about Gibraltar, well certainly not enough to change it's Brexit or enter into an accommodation with EU over them.

We must also face the fact that Rear Admiral Chris Parry is at best, an idiot. He believes the US will back the UK in any such action.

Rear Admiral Chris Parry must have forgotten the time the US navy diverted US sub in mid Atlantic to avoid upsetting the Spanish? The US was going to attend Trafalgar Day celebrations at Gibrarltar with the Royal Navy and when Spain objected the US turned the sub around. Is that the same country that Rear Admiral Chris Parry thinks is going to back up a UK war with Spain?

Rear Admiral Chris Parry must have forgotten that the CIA planned to relocate the Falklanders to Scotland as part of it's resolution of the conflict and there was even talk of giving the UK's battle plans to the Argentinians.

Rear Admiral Chris Parry must be at best, an idiot.

For all the talk of the special relationship the US has not backed up an independent UK action since Suez. The US has actually invaded UK territory without consulting or informing the UK as it did in Grenada in 1983.

So maybe it's all for the best that Lord Howard is gathering dust in the House of Lords and that the Royal Navy is free of Rear Admiral Parry.

Fake news from Ted Koppel

It's always sad to see people let themselves down and I was saddened to see Ted Koppel pushing his new book "Lights Out" based on the premise of a terrorist attack on US infrastructure.

" The more I looked into it, the more I came to the conclusion that the federal and state governments have done little or nothing to prepare for anything other than the natural disasters we experience every year and that a cyberattack would potentially be far, far worse." - Ted Koppel

Now apart from being the plot to that terrible terrible terrible stinker that was Die Hard V it is also the cry of the fear-monger and particularly the older fear-monger.

Basically Koppel's cry can be translated as

"Oh my! things are not what they were when I was a lad, we had a policeman on every street and we were safe in our beds but now, the kids, with their computers and internet, they are putting us all at risk Things are strange and different and you all should be afraid!"

Computer linked infrastructure is even older than the internet as we know it and computers have been running and managing it since before I was born. And yet can Ted point out one single serious cyber-attack in that time?

He can not. Can you? I doubt it.

But in his book he wants you to fear such an event, to invest money in preventing such an event.

But the truth is money and effort and time is and always has been spent in keeping infrastructure safe always has and always will.

Ted needs to avoid the doom-mongering and stop watching "War Games" on VHS. He will sleep better and so will we.

If you thought the weirdest think about St Patrick was that he was Welsh, not Irish, was of Roman decent and once put his crozier through the foot of an Irish Chieftain by accident then think again!

1,500 years after he came to Ireland (not on a Ryanair flight) he still has surprises in store for us.

In what seems to be a belated shock and scandal for the church it seems that there venerable old Welsh saint was in fact...........married!

Yes. Married.

According to a folklorist at University College Corkt St Patrick was married to woman named Sheelah.

Shane Lehane of the Department of Folklore in UCC says that March 17 celebrations were extended by a day to honour Patrick's "other half".

And he has evidence to prove it!

Mr Lehane references John Carr's 1806 text 'The Stranger in Ireland' where Carr writes about celebrations on the anniversary of St Patrick.

"From a spirit of gallantry, these merry devotees continue drunk the greater part of the next day, viz., the 18th of March, all in honour of Sheelagh, St. Patrick’s wife."

"Pre-Famine, pre-1845, if you go back to the newspapers in Ireland they talk not just about Patrick's Day but also Sheelah's Day," he said.

"So I wondered where this came from?

"You have Paddy's day on the 17th and it continues to Sheelah's day.

"I came across numerous references that Sheelah was thought to be Patrick's wife.

"She was his other half. The folk tradition has no problem with such detail.

Prologue

It was a rainy Tuesday night in Munich as I sat at my table looking into my beer to check my hair. It was perfect as usual.

Despite this I was feeling down. The economy was bad that, in an effort to stop inflation and increase the nations coffers, the Weimer Republic had decreed that people were to grow their hair to shoulder length. It had also doubled the tax on haircuts. These were the two straws that broke the back of my camel and my hairdressing business.

That morning I had my camel put down by the local veterinary surgeon and closed the shop up for good. Now I was drowning my sorrows in beer at the local Beer hall.

What happened next will remain with me until I die. All of a sudden there was a flurry of action at the next table, beer mats and peanuts were flying everywhere and a wild haired young man had jumped up on to the tabletop. He fumbled with a revolver and fired a shot into the ceiling shouting something about revolution but all I could see was a somewhat neglected yet excellent head of hair. Shortly afterwards he was bundled out the door by some burly policemen. All the way he was shouting “Mein Herr, my hair, don’t touch my hair.”

I knew I had witnessed something special and that my destiny was somehow tied with that man with the wild hair. My thoughts were interrupted by a tugging on my leg. I looked down to see one of the last war’s air aces Herman Goering was tugging on my trousers. “Have the police gone?” he hissed at me. When I told them they had he emerged from under the table resplendent in his air force uniform, his hair gelled back and showing no ill effects from being under my table.

"Who was that?" I asked. Goering turned to me and said “that is the greatest living German, after myself. That was the Fuhrer, Adolf Hitler.”

I had to know more about this man so later that week I made my way to the local prison and convinced the authorities that I should be allowed to cut Hitler’s hair. I was shown up some stairs and into a small room. There looking out the window was Hitler, his hair being caught by the wind forcing it to stand up as if it was at attention.

Wary of me at first Hitler soon opened up to me, he asked me about my life and I told him of my problems. He swore to me then and there that when he seized power he would revoke the despotic anti hairdressing laws of the Weimer Republic.

We talked for a while he told me of his early life of how he had always felt different from the others. He told me of his subconscious desire to kill his mother and marry his father. He told me of his life in the trenches, of the tremendous mustache he had grown on the Western Front.

It had provided him with warmth, camouflage and sense of peace in all that chaos and carnage. Then together we wept as he told me of how the Allies had gassed it and how the best he could manage now was a small square of hair under his nose. He told me about his plans for the future of Germany and I pledged my hairdressing skills to him for the rest of my life. He accepted this offer and said my service would not go un-rewarded.

Hillary beat Trump by 3,000,000 votes. In any other democracy on earth she would be elected as President. She definitely won the election! So loser Donald is an interloper and by all accounts he will be very luck to last the four years of his term of office. But it seems he was joined by another interloper today when an unstable and paranoid man scaled the fence of The White House and tried to visit Trump in the Oval Office. Given Trump's record of appointments the man may simply have been seeking a cabinet position or a place on the National Security Council where he would have been in good company.

Veterans or some veterans have been criticizing poor old President Trump for wearing an Admiral's hat and a flight jacket when he visited the new pre-commissioned U.S. Navy aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford.

Two points

The hat and jacket were given to him to wear by the military on the visit so why wouldn't he wear them?
The President is the Commander in Chief of the US armed forces and thus outranks all military commanders and is entitled to wear any uniform of any rank he likes!
You guys voted for him despite him being a draft dodging shifter (like Clinton) so deal with it.

I know that's 3 points but the last one had to be made.

Trump is in good company when it comes to dressing up as a sailor!
