The leader of the parliamentary opposition in Israel, the head of the Yesh Atid party, Yair Lapid, announced his intention to submit for discussion a bill on the dissolution of the Knesset.

⠀

“Next week, Yesh Atid will submit a bill on the dissolution of the Knesset for consideration at the plenary session. Everything that the [current ruling] coalition has brought to the people of Israel is pain, catastrophes, tragedies and crises,” he said, speaking at a meeting of the parliament.

⠀

According to Lapid, a “coalition of hope” should come to power in the country, which will “heal the wounds” of Israel.

⠀

His statement came amid a sharp escalation of contradictions within the ruling coalition due to disputes over the issue of conscription of Orthodox Jews into the army. Ultra-religious parties have threatened to leave the government due to dissatisfaction with the fact that a bill that would provide yeshiva (religious schools) students with exemption from military service has not yet been approved by Parliament, contrary to the promises of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

⠀

Earlier, The Jerusalem Post reported that a number of influential Orthodox rabbis are ready to urge their associates to leave the coalition. We are talking about Ashkenazi Orthodox parties that are members of the Yahadut ha-Torah parliamentary bloc, together they have 7 deputy mandates in the 120-seat Knesset.

⠀

According to the newspaper’s sources, if they decide to leave the coalition, they may be followed by members of the Sephardic Orthodox Shas party, which has 11 mandates.

The current Israeli government, led by Netanyahu, was formed at the end of 2022 following the parliamentary elections in November of the same year. The coalition was created around the right-wing Likud party, which is led by Netanyahu. It won 32 of the 120 seats in the Knesset and formed the largest faction, and Netanyahu, as its leader, received a mandate from President Yitzhak Herzog to form a government.

⠀

The Cabinet also includes far-right and ultra-orthodox political forces. In total, the coalition now controls 67 of the 120 seats in the Knesset. If Orthodox factions withdraw from it, it will lose its parliamentary majority, which in itself may lead to the dissolution of parliament and the calling of new elections.

The European Commission (EC) has proposed to the EU countries to extend the temporary protection status for Ukrainian refugees for one year – until March 4, 2027, and also called for the development of a plan for their return to Ukraine.
⠀

“The EC proposes to extend the temporary protection measures for another year, until March 4, 2027,” the commission’s press service said in a statement.

⠀
In addition, it is proposed to develop a strategy for the period after the termination of these measures, which so far allow residents of Ukraine to receive asylum automatically.

⠀

“The EC invites member states to prepare in a coordinated manner for the transition period regarding the termination of temporary protection measures by developing recommendations from the EU Council,” the document says.

⠀

These measures should meet the interests of Ukrainian citizens living in the EU, as well as take into account the needs of the country’s reconstruction. In particular, the EU can support the voluntary departure of refugees from there and their reintegration in their homeland.

⠀

According to the EC, there are currently about 4.3 million Ukrainian refugees in the EU, they enjoy the status of temporary protection. The EC’s proposal has yet to be approved by the EU Council.

⠀

Earlier, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, suggested that EU countries think about the future of Ukrainian refugees, taking into account the limited European resources, as well as Ukraine’s own needs for human resources.

The sculpture of French President Emmanuel Macron, stolen by Greenpeace activists, was returned to the Grevin wax museum in Paris, the museum’s press service reported.
⠀

“I confirm that we were able to pick up this character. He will be returned to his place this afternoon,” Veronik Berets, the head of the press service said.

⠀

According to her, the activists called the director of the museum the night before, saying that they had left the sculpture in front of the EDF energy company building in Paris. After that, the museum contacted the police, who transported the exhibit to the commissariat, from where it was taken away by museum staff, after assessing its condition.

⠀

When asked if the museum would continue to seek punishment for offenders, the press service replied that “first of all, I would like to understand how they managed to pull this off.”
⠀
On Monday, two women and a man who visited the museum in Montmartre disguised as tourists took out a wax sculpture of Macron worth 40,000 euros and brought it to the building of the Russian Embassy in Paris. The violators turned out to be Greenpeace activists who staged an action against economic cooperation between France and Russia.

⠀
The Grevin Museum on Montmartre Hill in Paris was founded in 1882 following the example of the British Madame Tussauds Wax Museum. There are about 450 characters in his collection, mostly reflecting the history and culture of France.

⠀
This is not the first time that the museum has been stripped of its exhibits. During its history, the attackers also managed to steal sculptures of Presidents Valery Giscard d’Estaing and Jacques Chirac.

Attempts to normalize relations with the Shiite military-political movement Ansar Allah (Houthis) without abandoning its ideology will only lead to “endless wars,” Rashad Mohammed Al-Alimi, chairman of the Governing Presidential Council of Yemen, said.

⠀

Since 2014, the Houthis have controlled about a third of Yemen’s territory, most of the central and northern provinces, including the capital Sanaa, having withstood a multi-year military campaign by the Arab coalition. The rest of the country is under the control of the Presidential Governing Council.

⠀

“We believe that any attempt to normalize relations with this formation (Ansar Allah), if it does not abandon its beliefs and views on the future of the state, is mining the root of the problem and leads to endless wars in Yemen and the region,” Al-Alimi said.

⠀

According to him, the Houthis, by virtue of their ideology, refuse to recognize any national or international control.

⠀

“They claim that their leaders are the successors of God on Earth and the source of the right path, and therefore they are infallible, protected from punishment, do not bear any responsibility, and are not subject to national or international control,” Al-Alimi added.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro sharply criticized British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who earlier announced London’s transition to a “war readiness” regime, and called him “distraught” and “obsessed.”
⠀

The British Prime minister on Monday, commenting on the country’s new defense strategy, said that Britain was entering a “war readiness” mode. The British government’s new strategic defense review calls Russia an “immediate and urgent threat” and reports that London will continue to send $4 billion in military aid to Kiev annually, spend $8 billion on ammunition production and intend to create 7,000 long-range missiles.

⠀

“Can the prime minister of such a powerful state as Great Britain be in his right mind when he says that he is preparing for war? Is it ethical, is it moral, to want war? Humanity does not need war, humanity needs peace,” the Venezuelan leader said on his weekly TV program With Maduro +, commenting on Starmer’s remarks.

⠀

According to Maduro, the statements of the British prime minister do not reflect the interests of ordinary Britons. The Venezuelan leader believes that Starmer “speaks on behalf of a degenerate, emaciated elite profiting from the production of weapons.”

⠀
Maduro asked a rhetorical question about whom the British authorities were going to fight, and stressed that such statements sound especially dangerous in the year of the 80th anniversary of the Victory over Nazism, from which the Red Army liberated Europe.
In this regard, the Venezuelan leader called on Europeans and the whole world to raise “a powerful social and popular movement against militarism and militancy, which this crazed, possessed, demonic Prime Minister Starmer calls for.”

The District Court of California refused to block the duties announced by US President Donald Trump at the request of the governor of the state Gavin Newsom, Politico reported, citing the court decision.
⠀

Earlier, Bloomberg, citing a statement from Newsom, reported that California would seek through the court to abolish duties on imports from Mexico, China and Canada, citing harm to consumers and businesses in the state.

⠀

“On Monday, a U.S. District Court judge dismissed a lawsuit by California officials over President Donald Trump’s tariffs, concluding that the case should be heard in a court specializing in trade disputes,” the newspaper writes.

⠀

It is noted that the Federal District Court for the Northern District of California ruled that the case should be considered in the United States Court of International Trade, while the judge simply dismissed the claim, rather than redirecting it there.

⠀
This circumstance made it possible for California to appeal the decision to the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, which, as the publication emphasizes, is known for its liberally oriented policies.

⠀
According to the newspaper, the plaintiffs have already filed an appeal.

⠀

On April 2, Trump signed a decree imposing “reciprocal” duties on imports from other countries.

⠀

Their base rate was 10%, and since April 9, increased rates have been applied to 57 countries, which were calculated based on the United States’ trade deficit with a specific country: so that instead of a deficit, there would be a balance. However, on April 9, Trump announced that more than 75 countries had not retaliated and had requested negotiations, so basic import duties of 10% would apply for 90 days for everyone except China.

⠀
The US Foreign Trade Court ruled on Wednesday that Trump had exceeded his authority in imposing import duties, and the court ordered them to be blocked. As CNN clarified, the court’s decision stops the effect of duties against individual countries, but does not affect measures such as 25 percent duties on cars, steel and aluminum. On Thursday, the Court of Appeal reinstated the decrees.
