A new field of study has developed regarding study of polymers which are conductor of electricity. But these researches produced the polymer by doping with sulphonic acid and then synthesizing within oily droplets suspended in water. Silicone rubber shows the property of withstanding extreme temperature and is normally able to operate between -55°C to 300°C. At these extreme temperatures, it shows much better tensile strength, elongation tear strength and compressive strength than natural rubber. Natural rubber has a backbone based on carbon making it vulnerable to actions of ozone, ultra violet rays, heat and other ageing factors. Polymer clay of various colors can be used to create beautiful and decorative frames of a mirror. Different shapes and textures like leaves, flowers, twines, blocks, patterns etc can be created using these different colored clays. The clay work is done on a base like wood, ceramic tiles, granite or acrylic sheet. The base with the clay work is then baked at 275° for a maximum 20 to 25 minutes. The clay work can be cured for any breaks or minor cracks by adding some more clay and again baking it. This causes the proper gelling of the clay with the base. Also to enhance the clay work, one can also use paints, pencil colors, glitters, metallic powder etc. A gloss varnish can also be used to boost the surface of the clay design.

First we begin with packages of polymer clay. It is preferred to use the Premo brand, although Fimo, Fimo Soft, and Sculpey III are used. Then prepare the clay so that it can be used. This is called “conditioning.” It involves kneading the clay until it is ready to be used. Depending on the stiffness of the clay and the amount, this process can take from 15 to 30 minutes. Next form the beads (or pendants, pins, or other items) out of clay. Notice that at this time the beads are plain and without any decoration. The amount of time it takes to form the beads varies depending on the size, shape, and number of beads being made. This step can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour or more!

After the beads are formed, apply some type of design to decorate them. One technique that can be used is to create a “cane.” Then combine different colors and shapes of clay to create a design. This can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour or more, depending on the complexity of the cane! The finished cane is usually too large to be used to decorate the beads, so it must be “reduced” to a more usable size. Note the reduced cane next to the original. This involves using a surgically sharp blade to remove slices from the cane or mokume gane and applying it to the bead. After applying the designs to the beads, do the final steps of preparation before firing them. At this time, pierce holes in beads, attach hooks to pendants, etc. At last the beads are ready to be fired. Then bake them in a household oven at 260-275 degrees (depending on the manufacturer’s instructions for each brand of clay). At this point they could be strung for a necklace or bracelet…but they are still rough. There is plenty of good “finishing” work left to make these beads even more beautiful. Once the items are completely sanded, buff them to a high shine. Then it gets ready to apply the glaze. Use an acrylic finish which bonds with the clay. Then heat-set the glaze for added strength. After applying two (sometimes three) coats of glaze to the beads, they are finished! These beads are then stringed into a bracelet.

It is generally thought that plastic is the only man made polymer. But, that is not so. Other examples of synthetic polymers are Bakelite, Nylon, PVC, Polystyrene etc.

Synthetic polymers are used extensively in various industries and for many different applications. This has made use of these synthetic polymers especially plastics very popular both in industry as well as in our everyday life.

Some of the fields where these synthetic polymers are being used are:

· Materials made from synthetic polymers are used in and on soil to improve its property of aeration, provide protective soil covering and help plant growth and health.

· Polymers like Dacron, Teflon and polyurethane are used as biomaterial in replacement heart valves or blood vessels.

· Plastic containers are very light and durable. They are used in various shapes and sizes both at homes, shops and industries. They are much cheaper than wooden crates etc. used earlier. Plastic has become very popular as a packaging material including packing of fruits and vegetables.

· Synthetic polymers are extensively used in industry because of its strength and light weight. Automobile parts, water pipes and tanks, packing materials, insulation, wood substitute, adhesives etc. are some of its industrial applications.

New fields where these polymers could be used are being found out every day. They are being developed for such fields such as storage and conduction of electricity, molecular based information storage and processing, new light weight composite materials, membranes used in reverse osmosis and separation techniques.

But, we should be aware of some of the demerits of using these polymers extensively. In some of the countries toys made from PVC are banned because of its toxicity. This is one of the reasons the experts do not recommend storing very cold foods in plastic containers or heating them (specially in microwave ovens) because some chemical components of plastic may leech into these food products. Plastic materials are very durable and they create various environmental problem. Burning of plastic materials create air pollution.

In future, we should use these polymers judiciously keeping in mind the merits and demerits of using this material.

Finally, the chemical reaction between the reactive groups is promoted resulting in a covalent bond between the micro particles and the formation of the polymer beads necklace. Polymer clay can be designed to obtain various images/figures on buttons. A miniature Eiffel Tower, fruits, flowers, hearts, crosses or even a critter can be designed on a button. You can also have a polymer clay button in the color of your national flag or opt for a button with a metallic finish.

Buttons can either be functional or used as a decorative piece. It can have shanks or holes; it can be sewn on to the cloth or just attached or pasted as a decorative piece.

Since polymer clay is available in various colors and different types such as translucent, fluorescent and those that glow in the dark, it is quite a good choice for making buttons. Apart from the usual colors, colors can be mixed to get a required shade too. Acrylic paint can also be applied on the surface of the buttons. Washing precautions of garments having polymer clay buttons:-

Clothes that have polymer clay buttons can be washed without causing any damage to the buttons if the buttons are coated with a water resistant epoxy glaze. If the garments are washed in a washing machine they should be drawn inside out and a slow speed should be chosen.

It is preferable however to wash such garments by hand. Do not tumble dry such garments. Also avoid dry cleaning.

Health Concerns

The safety of using buttons made of polymer clay has always been a matter of debate. Concern has been voiced over the use of polymer clay buttons from various quarters in general and consumer protection groups in particular. However studies have revealed that actual transfer of toxic elements present in polymer clay buttons to the body and foods to be quite low. Well, low enough to be ignored. Ingestion also was very low.

However it has been established that use of polymer clay buttons may cause exposure to plasticizers, in case of children, if ingested and also through ingestion of residues left on hands after making polymer clay buttons/toys. So care should be taken when these buttons are used for garments for children.
