Garden pond filters be they for goldfish, shubunkins, orfe, koi carp or any other pond fish carry out a very important function within the ponds eco-system.

Pond filters are homes for millions upon billions of beneficial bacteria that aid in the safe and secure removal of toxic gases such as ammonia (ammonium) and nitrite which can quickly overcome your fish, ultimately resulting in their death. Pond filters convert these toxic soluble gases into nitrate, which if required will readily feed your pond plants with the nutrients they require for growth.

Pond filters normally work on three key principals of mechanical waste management, bacterial action upon that waste and also some chemical / ultra violet light alteration upon the pond water for algae control. Although a natural pond does not require the use of a pond filter, a man made pond can only benefit from its use. Depending on the size of your pond and how many fish you have will determine the type and size of the pond filter you need. Once installed the pond filter will keep both the water free from particles that can cause the water to be murky, smelly and even toxic, your fish and pond plants will also benefit from the pond filter as they will be healthier.

Pond filters not only optimise the viewing of your pond by cleaning the water for enhanced viewing of the fish, plants and inhabitants pond filters also conserve water by cleaning and recycling the ponds original water, When the water is pumped back into your pond it keeps the pond water which also helps to reduce the risk of the pond becoming stagnant.

External Filters

External pond filters are usually the largest type of pond filter available. They are situated outside of the pond but close to it. They are usually filled with large sheets of foam with porous or plastic stone biological media underneath.

The only disadvantage is this type of pond filter is submersed in the water which may mean that you will need to stand in the pond to retrieve it depending on where it is situated when you decide to clean it.

When purchasing pond filters you will find that pet shops are always happy to help you chooses the right filter to suit your pond, take the time to ask someone in the shop and explain what sort of pond you have it is also wise to have a rough idea of the size and how many fish reside with it to make sure the best pond filter is selected.

Ultra Violet Pond Filter

Having an ultra violet pond filter will give you a much better chance at keeping your pond water clear. When used in conjunction with your regular pond filter, it’s more than likely that you will have nice clear pond water.

The way it works is this. As water in your pond passes through the ultra violet pond filter, the UV light inside of the tube kills the algae. As the algae dies, it begins to clump together. Now your regular pond filter goes into action and traps these dead algae.

Without one of these ultra violet pond filters it will be difficult to keep your water clear, and on sunny warm days you will get algae blooms like you wouldn’t believe, which in turn will make your water pea soup green.

You can get a couple different kinds. They make a submersible kind and an external one. Personally, I think it’s better to have a submersible UV light, just for the simple reason that they’re out of sight. They are durable and should last you for years, although you may have to replace the light bulb after so many hours of use. In a nutshell, you really don’t want to be without an ultra violet pond filter.
