Barbara Neitzel asked:

Koi pond plants add many important things to your pond. These additions include shade, beauty, wonderful scents, filtration, oxygen, protection and camouflage. The importance of good, healthy pond plants is huge!

One of the important benefits of your pond’s plants is that they compete with algae for nutrients. Because of this, they effectively aid in keeping algae out of the pond. Another important benefit is that they use your koi fish’s waste as fertilizer. Thus helping to eliminate another unwanted guest in your pond.

A variety of koi pond plants is preferred. This adds beauty, interest and balance to your pond. Depending on your pond’s size, you will want one or two of each type of plant to start. Keep in mind that you do not want your fish competing for space. Plan carefully before you add plants to your pond. It is a good idea to map out your plan on paper before you add too many koi pond plants.

There are three basic types of plants to add to your koi pond. They are:

Submerged Plants. Submerged plants are actually planted in the pond. They help to provide oxygen to the water and fish. They also provide protection and a spawning habitat for your fish.

Floating Plants. Probably the most popular of the floating plants are the water lily and the water hyacinth. Floating plants are easy! Just start them off in the shady part of your koi pond to let them acclimate and then move them to the location you desire. That’s right! Just drop them in! Floating plants help to provide shade and protection from predators for your koi fish. When choosing floating plants, you should aim for about 60%-65% surface coverage.

Marginal Plants. Marginal plants are planted in the shallow end of the pond and grow up and out of the water. One example of a marginal plant is a cattail. Cattails are very popular.

This basic overview of koi pond plants should get you headed in the right direction for creating a beautiful and balanced pond.

Ross Bainbridge asked:

Many people like to include a pond in their garden to add to the beauty and visual appeal. Ponds offer a perfect setting for relaxing and unwinding after a long and exhausting day. Many exotic ponds include waterfalls, colorful fish, and plants. Pond plants are essential for the survival of pond animals, as they offer shelter, food, and oxygen to them. Pond plants prevent the formation of algae and keep the pond clean. Pond plants can grow better in ponds in sunny areas due to the availability of sunlight required for photosynthesis.

Typically, pond plants are cultivated in zones such as bank-side zones, aquatic zones, and marsh zones. Some pond plants, such as meadowsweet and great willowherb, are cultivated in the bank-side zone, as they thrive in damp areas. The emergent plants, such as mud-sedge and yellow iris, thrive in the marsh zone near to the edge of the pond. Pond plants, such as frogbit and duckweed, grow in the aquatic zone. They float on the water’s surface and have small roots that hang in the water.

Plants, such as crowfoot and water lilies, have well developed roots that are buried in the soil, while the leaves float on the water?s surface. Other plants, such as Canadian pondweed and starwort, are fully submerged in the water and produce oxygen in large quantities. These plants require a lot of sunlight for this process. It is recommended to ensure that the floating plants do not obstruct the sunlight from reaching the submerged plants.

It is advisable for new gardeners to seek professional help in selecting an appropriate combination of pond plants. Selection of plants is essentially based on prevailing climatic conditions and individual choices. The amount of fertilizers required depends on the type of plants. Most fertilizers are sold in the market along with usage instructions. Over-fertilizing often leads to the formation of algae in the ponds.

It is crucial to clean the ponds regularly to prevent algae formation on the water’s surface. A pond filter can be very useful to control the growth of algae and keep the pond surface clean.

There are five basic types. Marginal, Water Lilies, Bog, Floating, and Oxygenating plants.

Marginal plants. You know that uncomfortable feeling when you’re neither dry nor soaked? That is the perfect condition for these plants-moist! They thrive on the surrounding area of your pond called the “Margins.” This area is generally where flooding occurs and can be either completely covered with water or slightly damp. Some are beautifully colored or uniquely shaped. They create the widest range in Aquatic plants.

Water Lilies. Ahh, the gem of ponds. Not only are they gorgeous, but they are one of the easiest type of Aquatics to grow! They flourish in almost any zone as long as temperature is at least 70

P. Hamilton asked:

If your garden pond has aquatic plants already planted then they are going to help with the water quality of your pond.

They will work in tandem with your regular pond filters, when the ‘good bacteria’ of your pond filter turns the bad stuff into nitrites the plants will then absorb the nitrites. So they are definitely a helpful addition.

The best plant for this is called Norfolk reed, there are many others which are good and you could also plant Water Cress. With water cress you have to make sure it is well contained in a sturdy pot because it will otherwise take over. This is quite delicious for your salads also.

When you are going to choose a filter for your pond you will have a good choice. You may want a regular submersible pump which will sit under the water and this is the most economic version for a smaller pond holding anything up to 1000 gallons of water.

You can get a filter called ‘a skimmer’ which does what it’s name would suggest – it skims debris from the top of the water preventing it going to the bottom and becoming part of the unwanted sludge.

There is a UV filter system which, although it does nothing physical to remove debris, it does work well to purify the water. It can stop the algae forming which gives your pond that ‘green water’ look.

Whilst the UV filter system is not the cheapest I do think that if your pond is your pride and joy you won’t feel that the extra cost is too much.

Then we come to the biofilters, they contain bacteria that works to change any ammonia present in the water into nitrite chemicals.

If you have fish in your pond their waste is excreted as largely ammonia and this is what you would call ‘self destructive’. Your fish eat to live but what they excrete can poison them!

The biofilter system purifies first and foremost then it also removes particles which are what makes pond water look cloudy and unclean. It could really be actually what is called clean, but it just wouldn’t look it.

It has been said that there are three essential pieces of equipment needed to ensure that you have a clean and healthy environment for fish in your pond.

Firstly a biological filter, known as a Biofilter, a UV filter which clarifies the water and a good and reliable pump. Make sure though that it is the correct pump for your pond, do not recycle a swimming pool or sump pump.

As mentioned, aquatic plants also have their part to play in good pond maintenance.

Lee Dobbins asked:

Plants can add interest and beauty to your fish pond but did you know that they also are vital for maintaining healthy water quality which will help keep your pond clear and your fish healthy?

There are five different types of plants that you want to think about planting in and around your pond – floating plants, oxygenating plants, marginal plants, bog plants and deep water plants. These plants not only give your pond and authentic look but can also help keep the water oxygenated, cut down on algae growth, give your fish a place to hide as well as a place to spawn and can also provide food.

When adding plants to your fish pond you want to think about how large they will get and how fast they will grow. You don’t want to add plants that will totally overwhelm your pond or that will make a full-time job of cutting back their growth. You also want to be sure that the plant can survive winters in your area. Plants don’t have to be planted directly in the soil of your pond, you can set them in mesh pots or fabric pond pots which will allow the air to pass through but will also prohibit the soil from getting into your pond and turning it muddy.

To make your pond look its best and be it’s healthiest you need to select plants for each pond layer. These different plants perform different functions as described below.

Deep water plants like Lotus, Water Lilies and Water Hawthorne grow in the deep waters of the pond. These plants will help remove the waste from the pond and act as sort of a natural filtration. They need oxygen and sunlight to grow their best. You might consider using an aquatic fertilizer that is safe for ponds. The Lotus and Water Lilies prefer water that is 2 feet deep but the Hawthorne can grow in as little as three to 24 Inches.

Oxygenating plants provide important oxygen to the pond as well as help to control the growth of algae by eating the same nutrients and carbon dioxide that algae needs to grow. Oxygenating plants also can provide food for your fish and act as shelters and spawning areas. Some good oxygenating plants include Hornwort, Water Violet, Water Buttercup and Water Milfoil.

Floating plants look great in the pond and they also provide shade and shelter for the fish and other creatures that live there. Be warned, however, that many of the floating plants will grow quickly and soon take over your pond. This can not only be an eyesore but can also be bad for the pond itself as it prevents photosynthesis which will decrease the waters oxygen level. Floating plants like Duckweed grow very quickly so you probably want to avoid that and stick to plants like Water Lettuce, Bladder Wart, Water Soldier, Water Hyacinths and Water Chestnut

Marginal plants like Sweet Flag, Golden Buttons, Marsh Marigolds, Japanese Arrowhead, and Lobelia grow in the shallows around the edge of your pond and depths of 2 inches to 1 foot. Cattails are also a marginal plant but they can be very invasive so you probably want to avoid those unless you plan to spend a lot of time weeding your pond.

Bog plants like Astilbe, Primula and Lysimachia grow at the very edge of the pond in the wet soil. they are important as they help siphon off surplus nutrients which allows control of algae growth thus keeping your pond clear.

Graham Wardle asked:

What is a pond with plants in it? Just another hole in the ground with water! Well, maybe it isn’t that bad, but you will find that by adding plants to your outdoor pond you can greatly help not only with the visual aspects of the pond, but also help your fish breed better and the pond keep itself healthy for your fish. Let’s take a look at how aquatic plants can help spruce up your outdoor pond.

* Different tropical fish like different types of aquatic plants. There are a large number which to choose from and it is important to pick types that your fish will enjoy and those that will help your pond. Most pet stores and tropical fish handbooks can give you an idea of what types of aquatic plants will work well in an outdoor environment. If your pond is large enough you may even want to consult with your local greenhouse which may have a selection of aquatic plants available.

* Aquatic plants serve many purposes in a pond. They not only provide a place for fish to hide, rest and breed, but they also help keep the Carbon Dioxide levels in the water regulated as well as help control algae production. Without aquatic plants you would need to use chemicals and other methods to control the environment.

* Freshwater ponds also benefit from having aquatic plants in them to control the environmental conditions of the water itself. Water lilies not only look beautiful, but they also provide a cool area for fish to hide out during particularly hot days. Many plants also attract bugs and other small insects to them which can provide a great secondary food resource for your tropical fish friends.

* If you are interested in trying to breed your fish, then adding some water-loving plants can also provide a habitat for your fish to breed and raise their young. Fish often lay eggs and want to do so in a place they think is safe. Plants provide the natural covering necessary to help in this process.

Finally, as with everything else in your pond, your aquatic plants will need periodic maintenance. Don’t let them overtake the entire pond – some are nice, too many can be deadly to your fish. Also, as plants die out over the course of nature be sure to remove them so they don’t add contamination to the pond as they decompose.

A growing trend in the home and garden sector is the building of backyard fish ponds or aquatic plant ponds. Putting a fish pond at your home and filling it with beautiful plants provides a wonderful and relaxing environment to your backyard. Many people will also add a babbling brook, or tumbling water fall, and just sit by their pond for hours enjoying the lush environment. You can even find these ponds adorned with statues of all sorts and exotic plants and flowers. A garden pond can end up being a significant investment and one way to protect your treasure is to install pond netting.

Koi pond netting, or garden pond netting, is typically synthetic mesh netting designed to be placed over your pond. It provides a shield of protection from various different factors. Face it, if you spend all that time and money building up your treasured pond you might as well take an additional step to add pond netting for protection.

If you buy mesh that is a small enough pattern you can provide protection for your pond during the Fall. Trees, plants, and shrubs will shed their leaves, and while this is a beautiful time of year it can wreak havoc on your Koi pond. If leaves fall into your pond they can remain on the surface for quite some time preventing fish from surface feeding. As time goes on the leaves absorb water and will settle to the bottom and for a residue layer and start to decay which can eventually pollute your pond and kill the fish inside. Also, during Winter storms branches and flying twigs will be prevented from falling into the water if your Koi pond netting is in place.

You will also find that as you fill your garden pond with fish the cost will start adding up very quickly. By nature these critters are quick jumpy and can be seen skipping across the surface of your wonderful pond. This is a wonderful sight to see, but tragically from time to time these fish can jump out of the pond. Of course you know the result and that is why you need to secure some fish pond netting over your investment to protect those beautiful fish.

Another threat to those precious fish is from land faring predators like birds, cats, and even coyotes. These animals by nature will pray on fish, and there is nothing easier for them to grab a quick snack from your treasured garden pond. To these animals, a Koi pond is like the proverbial shooting fish in a barrel and if you don’t protect your pond the fish will soon be gone. Installing pond netting will keep this vermin from attacking your golden swimming jewels and give you peace of mind as well.

You may be in the habit of winterizing your pond to by removing the aquatic plants until warmer weather arrives. Part of this process should be the inspection of your pond netting to make sure it is secure, has no rips or tears, and is not sagging in any areas. Doing this yearly will insure that you will always be able to protect your investment and enjoy it for years to come.

Samantha Sons asked:

Why would anyone want a wetland that has no character, life, or definition? The only solution is wetland plants. Water Plants are a great way to add life and character to any pond no matter the size.

Pond Plants add benefits to your pond. For starters wetland plants soak up some of the water that would otherwise cause the pond to overflow. Plants also work as a filter to the water. They help filter out sediments, excess nutrients, and pollutants out of the water. And because wetland plants are productive ecosystems, they help provide food for a large amount of fish and different types of animals. If any fisherman wants healthy fish in his pond, these mitigation species are again a must. Some fish and pond wildlife depend solely on these plants.

Picking plants that are pleasant on to the eyes is a great idea too. For starters no pond is complete without cattails. A pond is simply not a pond without them. Cattails are also easy to buy from almost any online plant nursery. Lily pads are great for inviting a few animals too. They’re attractive, small and they multiply on their own. Bulrush is a nice grass to add character to any pond. These few plants will also give life to a pond during the winter.

Last buy certainly not least larger waterscapes might require more plants than smaller ones. The best way to get enough wetland plants to landscape your large pond is to go wholesale. There are many wetland suppliers online that sell aquatic plants wholesale online. Hurry up, get started on your pond, wildlife will love it.
