Power rated in SAE net horsepower conditions was further reduced to 250 hp (190 kW) at 4,400 rpm and 325 lb·ft (441 N·m) at 3,200 rpm torque for the base 400 engine. Optional 455 had the same effect (although peak 3,600 rpm / min.), But considerably more torque. Most of the decline is due to the new rating system (which is now enshrined in the engine as installed condition with mufflers, accessories and standard intake). The 1972 Pontiac GTO engines were relatively little changed since 1971 Pontiac GTO.

A very rare option was the 1972 Pontiac GTO 455 HO engine, essentially similar to those in the Trans Am, it was rated at 300 hp (220 kW) at 4,000 rpm and 415 lb·ft (563 N·m) at 3,200 rpm, and even the new SAE net figures. Despite its modest 8.4:1 compression, this engine was as strong as many older engines with higher gross power, but like all other 1972 Pontiac GTO model engines, it can run on low-lead octane regular, low-leaded or unleaded petrol. Only 646 1972 Pontiac GTO cars with this engine were sold.

Sales fell by 45% to 5811. Although not a production 1972 Pontiac GTO convertible to offer the buyer can order a LeMans Sport Coupe with one of the three 1972 Pontiac GTO engines and other power sports opportunities for the Pontiac GTO in all but name it. Even the 1972 Pontiac GTO’s Endura bumper was offered as an option on LeMans/Sport models, with “PONTIAC” spelled out on the driver’s side grille rather than “GTO.”

In about five years, GM will drop the rear-wheel-drive G8 sedan from Pontiac’s lineup. But before that happens, enthusiasts and GM engineers that love the model will have their last couple of hurrahs. Following the Pontiac G8 GXP that goes on sale this fall, GM will release its new LSX454 crate motor. However, at the 2008 SEMA Auto Show, GM will be putting the two together to create a 638-hp G8 GXP called the Pontiac G8 GXP Street Edition.

The production 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP produces 415-hp through its 6.2L V8. Fitted with the new LSX454, the G8 GXP will make 638-hp and 600 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a 6-speed automatic that sends power to the rear-wheels, those performance figures are almost up-to-par with the Corvette ZR1′s 638-hp and 604 lb-ft of torque.

Brakes have been borrowed from the Cadillac CTS-V to provide additional stopping power along with 20-inch aluminum wheels wrapped in high-performance tires.

When conceived as a concept, the planning engineers and stylists were visionary. They saw a market for a car based SUV, available with AWD, flexible seating, with plenty of cargo room, but with a car like ride, and fuel economy. The basic concept was quite sound (with vehicles like the Highlander, Murano, and Edge taking pages from this playbook), but the execution was anything but a success. The vehicle was based on the GM Minivan Platform (the Montana to be precise), with an uncompetitive 3.4L V6, and 4 Speed Auto. The AWD system was to be an electronic one, mounted within it’s own aluminum subframe, and never really worked as advertised. The body was covered in every Pontiac Styling cliche, from an overabundance of cladding, to the split grill, and an over styled spoiler at the rear. The interior, equally over styled, actually had a couple of good ideas, including a drink cooler as a part of the console, and an available tent that could be used for camping.

The Original TransPort concept was in keeping with the Pontiac Tradition of an exciting people mover. In reality, the production version of the original TransPort, along with it’s corporate cousins, the Chevrolet Lumina APV, and the Oldsmobile Silhouette, proved to be anything but exciting, or even practical for that matter. They received some unfortunate names in the market place, from Ant Eater, to Dustbuster (taken from the name of a Black & Decker hand held compact Vacuum cleaner). They had an extraordinary windshield, and were uncompetitive with other minivans as far as seating capacity, room for cargo, or even fuel economy.

For years this was Pontiac’s best selling car, but the last versions, from 1999 to 2005 were truly horrible cars. On paper, they looked like a good value, but their ergonomics, structure, and reliability were substandard. They had issues with their braking systems, electrical system shorts, and that body cladding had a tendency to fall off. On top of all of these issues, Pontiac decided to remove standard features and make them optional, like ABS, and Traction Control. One good move was to replace the 2.4L Twin Cam 4 cylinder with the excellent 2.2L EcoTec which produced greater mileage ratings, and was much smoother.

The Solstice picked up the 2 Seat Pontiac Sports Car banner in 2006. This was a unique chassis (The Kappa) designed just for this car, with the excellent EcoTec 4 cylinder engine in either normally aspirated, or Turbocharged versions. Unfortunately, General Motors decided that the Solstice can’t survive on it’s own, and so a “Badge Engineered” version was created for the struggling Saturn Brand called the Saturn Sky (There is also a version created for GM’s European brands, Opel & Vauxhall). This is another lesson in the dilution of the Pontiac brand.

Introduced at the North American International Auto Show, the Solstice roadster began production in Wilmington, Delaware, starting in mid-2005 for the 2006 model year. The exterior styling of the production Solstice is similar to that of the 2002 Solstice concept that preceded it. Production of the Solstice was to be running before summer 2005, but delays at the Wilmington plant pushed volume production to the fourth quarter. The new hardtop targa 2009 model was announced in mid 2008.The Solstice uses the GM Kappa platform, which also underpins the Saturn Sky, Opel GT, and Daewoo G2X. The Solstice was nominated for the North American Car of the Year award and Design of the Year award from the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) for 2006. It was a runaway hit for Pontiac, with 7,000 orders in the first 10 days of availability and 6,000 more orders before winter.
