New Zealand was discovered and settled more than a thousand years ago by the Maori people, who traveled across the sea from Polynesia in the South Pacific. Among the first European visitors were Dutchman Abel Tasman in 1642 and the English explorer James Cook who charted the country’s shoreline in 1769.

In 1840, Maori chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi with the British Crown, accepting British governance in return for a series of guarantees relating to ownership of their lands, forests, fisheries and treasures ( items of spiritual and cultural significance) The treaty of Waitangi guarantees Maori a unique place in New Zealand. Organised European settlement accelerated after the signing of the Treaty, at a time when a prosperous Maori economy existed which included trade with Australia. Increased demand to develop land for farms and settlements resulted in armed conflict between some Maori tribes and British troops. Today the New Zealand Government is committed to reaching fair and durable settlement with Maori, to compensate for confiscations of land arising from the conflict and breaches of the Treaty proven to have occurred in the past.

The discovery of gold in the South Island brought a temporary economic boom during the middle of the century. But it was the expansion of pastoral farming that was the real basis of the nation’s growth, particularly after the first shipment of frozen meat to Britain in 1882.

Pioneering social progress accompanied New Zealand’s growth as a nation. In 1893 New Zealand became the first country in the world to give women the right to vote. Old-age pensions were introduced in 1898. During World War I New Zealand troops fought on the side of the British in Europe, Turkey and the Middle East-at great cost. One man in three between the ages of 20 and 40 was kill or wounded.

New Zealand forces fought in Europe, the Middle East and the Pacific during World War II. At the end of the war, New Zealand became a founder member of the United Nations. From the late 1940s to the 1970s New Zealanders enjoyed increasing economic prosperity based largely on agriculture. Growth has slowed in recent decade. However, science 1984, successive governments have implemented far-reaching economic reforms intended to make the county more productive and internationally competitive.

New Zealand is located in the South-west Pacific Ocean, midway between the Equator and the South Pole and approximately 1,600 kilometers east of Australia. Nearest countries to the north are New Caledoinia, Fiji and Tonga, about the same distance away as Australia.

New Zealand is similar in size to Japan, Britain and Italy. There are two main islands, the North Island and the South Island. They are separated by Cook Strait, which is 20 kilometers across at its narrowest point. The northern and southern extremities of the country are 1,600 kilometers apart. No point on either island is more than 120 kilometers from the coast.

New Zealand’s landscape is notable for its variety and, in particular, its mountainous nature. The spectacular Southern Alps of the South Island rise to permanent snowfields and contain numerous glaciers. They include 19 peaks exceeding 3,000 meters in height. The North Island’s highest peaks are of a volcanic nature. A Chain of active volcanoes is located in the centre of the island amid hot springs, geysers and boiling mud pools.

Both islands contain fertile lowland areas of pastoral land, large natural and man-made forests, many sandy beaches and short, swift-flowing rivers. Lakes are numerous in both islands. The larger North island lakes are situated on the volcanic central plateau while the major South island lakes have glacial origins and are set amid beautiful mountain scenery. In the far south-west of the South Island the Southern Alps meet the ocean in a series of dramatic fiords.

New Zealand’s population is approximately 3.8 million. New Zealanders of European and Polynesian origin are most numerous, however a wide variety of races are represented. The indigenous Maori population is around 520,000 but there is significant intermarriage with other races. Nearly three-quarters of the population live in the North Island. Eighty five percent live in cities and towns. New Zealand’s largest Cities are Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

English is the common language of business and everyday usage. Maori is New Zealand’s second official language. It is recognized by Parliament and the courts and continues to grow in significance.

The Maori people traveled from Polynesia to New Zealand more than a thousand years ago. Maori are a tribal people, with 79 traditional tribal locations throughout the country. Their way of life is based on cooperation, loyalty and respect, and is centred on the marae, an area of land with a meeting house adorned with stylized carvings of tribal ancestors. Maori maintain a deep spiritual attachment to their land and related customs.

A resurgence of awareness and pride in that heritage has taken place in recent years, as significant effort has been made to preserve the language and culture of New Zealand’s indigenous people. Much that is unique to New Zealand is derived from Maori culture.

One such unique aspect of Maori culture is the action song, used to express many Maori traditions and beliefs. Most famous of these is the haka, a traditional war song performed by Maori men and used by New Zealand’s internationally renowned rugby team, the All Blacks.

Living standards in New Zealand are generally high. Three-quarters of New Zealanders own their own home, and most households possess a motor car, colour television, telephone, refrigerator and washing machine. Few countries can match New Zealand for quality of life. The is fresh, the water is clean, fresh food is plentiful and even the large cities are relatively safe places to live, work and play. Opportunities in business and leisure abound, a fact reflected by the number of New Zealanders who excel in many fields on the world stage.

Cultural Activities

Although geographically isolated, New Zealanders enjoy a wide range of cultural activities and events. The performing arts, cinema, writing, and the visual arts attract large numbers of participants and patrons. Many New Zealand artists achieve international recognition and success. Opera stars Dame Kiri te Kanawa and Dame Malvina Major, film-makers jane Campion and Peter Jackson and actor Sam Neill are examples.

Leading stage shows and acts from overseas now place New Zealand on their touring calendar as enthusiastic support is virtually guaranteed. Wellington hosts a festival of the arts every two years.

Festivals celebrating the cultures of Maori and Pacific Island people abound. Story-telling through songs, dance and action is fundamental to these cultural and events such as the annual Aotearoa Maori Performing Arts Festival are spectacles enjoyed by thousands.

New Zealand is an independent parliamentary democracy within the Commonwealth. The formal head of state is Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of New Zealand, who is represented in New Zealand by the Government-General.

Parliament is elected every three years by Mixed Member Proportional Representation (MMP)– a voting system introduced in 1993 as a result of two referenda. All New Zealanders over the age of 18 have the right to vote. There are 120 Members of Parliament, some of whom represent a geographical electorate, while others enter Parliament as a party representative. The first Parliament elected under MMP saw a significant increase in the representation of Maori, ethnic minorities and women. Of the 120 MPs in the current Parliament, 37 are women, 16 are Maori, four are Pacific Islanders and one is Chinese-born.

The Prime Minister is the head of government, supported by a Cabinet of Ministers chosen from the elected Members of Parliament. Government policy is implemented by 38 public service departments. Parliament sits in Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand.

Local Government bodies, in the form of regional councils, territorial authorities, community boards and special authorities, manager public utilities, service and resources in their area. They are funded largely by rates, a local tax on landed property.

New Zealand has a world-wide reputation as an efficient and innovative producer of agricultural products. Almost half of the nation’s export earnings are derived from farming.

Research and technology have played an important role in establishing that reputation. Modern machinery and efficient soil, pasture and stock management have enabled full advantage to be taken of the temperate climate and extensive fertile pasture lands. Nine Million cattle and 45 million sheep graze those lands, producing high quality meat and wool.

Horticulture also contributes significantly of the economy. New Zealand apples and kiwifruit are exported worldwide. Many vineyards produce wines of high quality. The most plentiful resources are the land, forests, rivers and the sea. These are the basis of New Zealand’s key industries. New Zealand is an active trading nation. The country is one of the world’s largest exporters of wool, and accounts for a quarter of the world’s international dairy trade ( notable Butter, cheese and milk powder). Tourism

FORT ST. GEORGE:

Fort St.Geroge occupies a place of pride and prominence in Chennai. This bastion achieved name from St.George, the patron saint of England. The Fort houses St.Mary’s Church which is the oldest Anglican Church in India built in 1680 and the tombstones in its courtyard are the oldest British tombstones in India. With the decretive domes and corridors reminiscent of Indo-Saracenic architecture and the adjacent Parys Corner are the important landmarks of Chennai. This area is always crowded and active. Built in 1892, the High Court of Chennai is believed to be the second largest judicial complexes in the world.

SRI PARTHASARATHY TEMPLE:

This temple in Triplicane is dedicated to Lord Krishna. The temple was originally build by the Pallavas in the 8^th century AD. Though additions were later made to it by the Chola and Vijayanagara Kings.

KAPALESWARAR TEMPLE:

Not far from Triplicane, in Mylapore, there is yet another 8^th Century Pallava temple. The temple tower is in the characteristic Dravidan style of architecture. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple has some beautiful sculptures, among which the bronze idols of 63 Saivites Saints (Nayanmars) which adorn the outer courtyard are rare specimens. Also in the courtyard under the old Punnai tree is a small shrine depicting Goddess Parvathi in the form of a Peacock, worshipping Lord Shiva. It is from his legend that Mylapore swarms with life during the Arubathumoovar festival that is held in March-April every year.

SANTHOME CATHEDRAL BASILICA:

Santhome at the southern end of Marina derives its name from St.Thomas, an apostle of Christ who is believed to have come to Chennai sometime during 52 AD. He was believed to have been killed on St.Thomas Mount just outside the city in 78 AD and was interned in San Thome beach where a church was later built. Several Years after, another church was built further inland and his mortal remains were transferred from the former to the later. In 1606 the Church was re-built as a cathedral and in 1896 it was made a basilica. The beautiful tainted glass windows at the basilica portray the story of St. Thomas and the Central Hall has 14 wooden plaques depicting scenes of the last days of Christ. In the cathedral is a 3 feet high statue of Virgin Mary which is believed to have been brought from Portugal in 1543.

GUINDY NATIONAL PARK:

The Deer Park 595 acres in extent, situated adjacent to Raj Bhavan was originally a part of the Governor’s Estate. It is botanically very interesting in an much as it is the only one of its kind o carry even today derelict vegetation truly representative of the natural thorny scrub jungle of our southern dry zone interspersed with more than 30 tree species which include a number of centuries old gigantic shady banyan trees. This park with a net-work of roads, footpaths, nature trails, lakes and ponds, all situated amidst sylvan surroundings offers good opportunities for viewing wild life. The main faunal attraction of this park is the occurrence of rare Indian Antelope popularly known as the Black Buck found nowhere in the World except India.

The incidence of bird life is also equally interesting. Many birds like the King Fisher, Blue jay, Golden backed Woodpecker, Crow pheasant, yellow wattled Lapwing, Redwattle Lapwing, blue faced Malkhoa, Shrikes, Koels, Doved, Minivets, Munias, Barkets, Parakeets, Grey partridge, tailor birds, robins, drongos, quails, beack paradise, flycatcher and the stone curlew can be seen here.

ARINGER ANNA ZOOLOGICAL PARK:

Animals are exhibited in a large open island type enclosures with simulated natural environment. Other attractions are Nocturnal Animal House, Safari Parks, walk through Aviary, Pre-historic animal park, Zoo education and interpretation, Prey-Predator enclosures and an Aquarium.

THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY:

The Society was founded by Madame Blavatsky and Col.Olcott in U.S.A. and later moved to Adyar in 1882. Apart from shrines of all faiths and he peaceful Garden of Remembrance, there is a 95 years old library which has a very good collection of rare oriental manuscripts written on palm leaf and parchment.

ELLIOT’S BEACH:

Following the road along the coast down south from Marina one comes to Elliots beach where one can spend a few hours relaxing. At the end of this beach are the Velankanni Church, which attracts its own flock of pilgrims and the Ashtalakshmi temple as it houses eight different forms of Goddess Lakshmi in a unique style of architecture.

KALASHETRA:

In Thiruvanmiyur, beyond Elliots beach, is Kalakshetra or Temple of Art. It was founded in 1936 by Rukmani Devi Arundale to train, encourage and revive interest in Bharatanatyam which is the classical dance form of the State.

BIRAL PLANETARUIM:

This Birla Planetarium at Kotturpuram situated between Adyar and Guindy, is the most modern planetarium in the country. It houses a modern fully computerized projector which depicts the heavens on a hemispherical dome. The planetarium presents to the visiting public and students audio-visual programs on various themes in astronomy. Adjoining the planetarium is the Periyar Science and Technology Museum which is of interest to students and other science enthusiasts.

GANDHI, RAJAJI, KAMARAJ MEMORIALS:

These three memorials are situated east of Raj Bhavan in respectful memory of great leaders of India.

ST.THOMAS MOUNT:

Atop the 76 meter high mount where St. Thomas was martyred, is an old church, which was built by the Portuguese around 1514. Among the interesting relics in the church is an old stone cross which the apostle is said to have clutched in his hand while dying. The blood-like stains on the cross have given the name Bleeding Cross and the mystic stains have to this day been found to be too deep to be removed by scrubbing. On the wall above the altar is an oil painting of the Madonna which was brought to India by St.Thomas and is said to be one of the seven that were painted by St.Luke.

THE CORPORATION CAMPUS:

Rippon Building of Indo-Saracenic structure named after the Governor General Lord Rippon, the father of Self Government in India, is the seat of Chennai Corporation, the oldest city Corporation in India.

VALLUVARKOTTAM:

The standing memorial to immortal Tamil Poet-Saint Thiruvalluvar is shaped like a temple chariot and is, in fact the replica of the temple chariot in Thiruvarur. A life-size statue of the saint has been installed in the (39 meter tall) chariot. The 133 chapters of his famous work Thirukkural have been depicted in bas-relief in the front hall corridors of the chariot. The auditorium at Valluvarkottam is said to be the largest in Asia and can accommodate about 4000 people.

MUSEUM, NATIONAL ART GALLERY & CONNEMARA LIBRARY:

The pantheon Complex was built before 1789 and was a place of assemblage for the British till it was bought by the Government in 1830. Later, several new buildings were added to it. Today this complex houses the Government Museum, the National Art Gallery and the Connemara Public Library.

The museum was established in 1857 and has the county’s best collection of South Indian bronzes. Both ancient and modern, among which beautiful bronze icons of Nataraja, Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman are worth mentioning. The museum also has geology, anthropology sections. The Amaravathy Gallery contains rare second century marble sculptures which depict important events in the life of Gautama Buddha. The sculptures were unearthed from the Buddihist ruins at Amaravathi.

The National Art Gallery exhibits several beautiful paintings, which include 16^th and 18^th century ones from Rajasthan, the Muhal period and 17^th Century Deccan Art. There are display of bronzes from the 10^th and 13^th centuries and Indian handicrafts from the 11^th and 12^th centuries.

M.G.R. FILM CITY:

Set up by the Government of Tamilnadu in the sprawling Tharamani Area, M.G.R.Flim city houses various location and settings for film-shooting besides dubbing and re-recording theatres. The software city is coming up nearby.

RAJAJI HALL:

Built by Edward Clive to celebrate the English Victory Over Tipu Sultan, this august Hall was originally the banqueting hall of the Governor’s residence. This hall was build in the shape of a Greek temple. It has soaring flight of steps. This hall is renamed as Rajaji Hall and is now used for important public functions.

MUTTUKKADU (36 Kms)

This is an ideal picnic spot. Tamilnadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) runs a Boat Houses where facilities for boating and wind surfing are available.

Not far from Mamallapuram, this crocodile breeding and research centre is run by Chennai Crocodile Bank Trust. Here Several species of Indian crocodiles and alligators around the world are bred in captivity. There reptiles are kept in their natural habitat in open pools and can be viewed from a safe proximity. This farm breeds crocodiles to augment the crocodile population of wildlife sanctuaries.

VEERAMAMUNIVAR (Fr. Constantine Beschi)

The mission center of Elakurichy attained its name and fame with the arrival of Fr.Constantine Beschi, an Italian Jesuit who become a renowed TAMIL SCHOLAR of his time. He administered the Mission for the span of 13 years from 1726 - 1739. In the years of 1728 - 29 a severe famine was ravaging the Thanjavur Kingdom. Many of the Catholics were crossing over to the Lutheran fold who offered them a good sum of money for abandoning their Catholic faith. It was during this distressing period that Fr.Beschi had a special recourse to Our Lady and begged her to protect the Catholics from falling into the Lutheran-fold. And Our Lady granted him the favour. Many of the Catholics who had gone to the other fold came back.

NALLA THANGAL TEMPLE

It is a story of brother and sister affection. People believe it happened in 17^th century. In Virudhunagar District, near Vathirappu there was place called Rajakottai. It was ruled over by Nalla Thambi and his brothers. They had one sister called Nalla Thangal. She was married to Kasi Rajan who was the ruler of Mana Madurai. Once Famine struck Mana Madurai. It was very hard to live there. So Nalla Thangal started for Rajakottai with her seven children. When she reached there her brother had gone to the forest for hunting. His wife Alankari ill treated Nalla Thangal. So she left the house and jumped into a well with her Children. When Nalla Thambi returned from the forest he knew the matter and decided to kill Alankari and her relatives. On a fixed day her arranged for a dinner to Alakari’s relatives. All of a sudden the dinner hall fell down. I was Nall thambi’s trick. Later he also committed suicide. It shows his love for his sister. Today people worshipped this place as temple. It’s located the village Vathirappu is situated 18 kms north west of Srivilliputhur.

World War II Memorial

This is one of the most visited places in Labuan. Surrender Point

This is where the 37^th Japanese Southern Army Surrendered to the 9^th Division Australian Imperial Forces on 9^th September 1945 which led to the end of World War II in Borneo. Southeast Asia’s first war crime trials were also conducted in this area.

Botanical Gardens

About five minutes from Labuan town, is the Botanical Gardens which was previously the grounds of the Government House, locally known as ‘Bumbung 12’. Built in 1852, the house was a long and low structure with an interesting roof design. The Botanical Gardens is a recreational park with old trees and beautiful landscaping.

Water Villages

There are many water villages in Labuan. The main ones are Kampung Bebuloh Laut and Kampung Pattau-Pattau. Each house is connected to the other by cement walkways. These water villages, brightly decorated with colorful blooms on their verandahs are an interesting feature in Labuan.

Labuan Square

Negeri Sembilan is a small but interesting state with a rich culture and history. It is about 50 km south of Kuala Lumpur. Negeri Sembilan which literally means nine states or districts is often identified with the pervasive influence of the minangkabau culture.

The Minangkabau people migrated across the Straits of Malacca from Sumatra centuries ago and their traditional houses consist of upswept roofs reminiscent of buffalo horns. Many of the state’s modern buildings are fine examples of this distinctive architecture.

A unique feature of the state is the Adat Perpatih, a matrilineal social system practiced by the present-day descendants. This system is evident in clan and marriage customs, property ownership and dance forms.

The state capital of Seremban is an hour’s drive from Kuala Lumpur and is a flourishing urban centre with several historic and cultural landmarks.

Taman Negara

Kenong Rimba Park

Jeram Besu

Besu Rapids is one of the best white-water rafting sites in the country. Organised tours offering off-road adventures as well as caving and abseiling activities can be arranged.

Elephant Conservation Center

This centre is dedicated to rescuing and protecting the country’s elephants. Take a close look at these friendly jumbos during their feeding times or watch the fun as they enjoy a muddy splash in the nearby river.

Tioman Island

Acclaimed as one of the best island getaways in the world, the warm waters and good visibility make it a paradise for divers and snorkellers. Tioman’s verdant greenery is home to a splendid variety of plants and small animals, including butterflies, monitor lizards, deer and monkeys.

Cherating

This is a seaside destination long popular with budget travellers. It is the site of Asia’s first Club Med and the charming Cherating Village.

Teluk Chempedak

Pekan

Located on the banks of the Kuantan River 50 km south of Kuantan, Pekan is the royal town of Pahang. Only 15 minutes from Pekan is the Pulau Keladi Cultural Villages. Among the attractions here in the birth place of Tun Abudl Razak, Malyasia’s second Prime Minister.

Tekam Plantation Resort

Redang

Cemerong Waterfall

Situated in the Cemerong Forest Reserve, the mutli-tiered waterfall is truly a spectacular sight. It has four cascading rapids, the highest of which falls 600m. Also within the area is the biggest Chengal Tree in Malaysia, said to be 1,300 years old. The Lata Tembakah Waterfall is another popular sport for relaxation.

Kenyir Lake

The picturesque Kenyir Lake is the largest man-made lake in Southeast Asia. Surrounded by a vast tropical jungle, the lake area is a popular spot for angling, boating, canoeing, jungle-trekking, 4WD driving and golfing. Accommodation includes houseboats and floating chalets.

Sekayu Recreatinal forest

This is the site of the seven-tiered Sekayu Waterfall. The natural pools are ideal for a refreshing swim amidst lush greenery. The area is equipped with picnic spots, resting huts and furnished chalets.

Tanjung Mentong (Gateway to Taman Negara)

Tanjung Mentong is the state’s entry point to Taman Negara, Malysia’s premier national park. It has one of the world’s most complex and rich eco-systems. Taman Negara Straddles across Terengganu and two other neighbouring states.

Bewah and Taat Caves

These caves are situated at the southern end of Kenyir Lake. Bewah Cave is the largest with an entrance that lies 40m above lake level. Climb the flight of steps from the floating jetty to view archeological pits and thriving cave fauna. Gua Taat, situated opposite, is the site of pre-historic findings.

Gunun Gagau

Adventure seekers can enjoy a thrilling mountaineering experience at the 1,376m Gunung Gagau. Other activities include rock climbing and mountain biking.

Pasar Payuang or Central Market is one of the most popular tourist sport in the Sate. Terengganu State Museum Complex

This is the largest museum complex in Southeast Asia. Consisting or four main blocks, and adjacent Maritime museum and five traditional houses. Set amidst beautifully landcaped gardens, the museum offers a glimpse into the rich history of the state.

Tengku Tengah zaharah Mosque

Dubbed as the ‘Floating Mosque’ it features a combination of modern and Moorish architecture, it is a sight o behold, especially when lit up at night.

Kampung Cina

This is the town’s main Chinese village. The preserved entrance to Kampung Cina is a richly decorated archway with protective dragons. Restoration of elegant homes in this district highlight the cement embossed wall patterns, and long wooden shutter windows.

Batu Bersurat (inscribed Stone)

Dating back to 1303 and discovered in 1887, this stone marks the significance of Islam in Terngganu. It features hand inscriptions in the Jawi script, declaring Islam as the official religion. The original stone is kept at the State Museum while a replica stands in Kuala Terenganu’s main town circle.

Istana Maziah

Built with a hint of French architecture, the royal palace was the official home of the previous state ruler. It is currently used for royal ceremonies and state receptions.
