POP Fizz Burlesque Charm School

Burlesque moves consist of simple dance steps performed with a cheeky, teasing, flirtatious attitude which emphasizes confidence and sexuality. Burlesque is a celebration of the female form and as such, has traditionally held curvaceous bodies in high esteem. In contrast to many modern dance forms, women of all body types are welcome. In class we'll warm-up and then learn a choreographed Burlesque routine set to modern or 1940’s Big Band music. You'll tone and tighten the muscles around the problem areas of the thighs, hips and tummy all while strutting your stuff with a feather boa around your neck. Hello lovely POP Fizz blog readers and supporters! I'm in the process of moving out of my flat, going on vacation in France and moving back to America from England.... time consuming stuff! In my freetime I'm getting ready for some pretty exciting POP Fizz stuff to be unveiled in August (plus a new logo!)-- I can't wait!

Instructions for Paper Photo Boxes

Used colored paper to customize your homemade photo box.

Using simple origami skills and very few materials, you can make your own photo box to house important photos and mementos. Using heavy card stock will make the photo box more durable. Customize the photo box by using patterned paper, gluing photos to the outside of the box, drawing on the box or printing digital photos directly onto the card stock to create a completely unique, personalized look.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

2 sheets square paper or card stock
Scissors
Glue

Top of the Box

Step 1

Fold a piece of paper from one corner to the opposite corner, creating a triangle shape. Repeat on the second piece of paper.
Step 2

Open the piece of paper up fully, and refold in the same way, using the opposite corners.
Step 3

Reopen the piece of paper. You should now see an "X" across the center of the page.
Step 4

Fold the corner of the paper to meet the center of the "X," creating a small triangle. Repeat with the remaining three corners. You will now have four small triangles, all pointing to the center of the paper.
Step 5

Fold one full edge of the square to meet the center line, and fold the opposite edge of the square to meet the center line. You will now have two rectangles meeting at the center of the paper.
Step 6

Open the paper up fully, and notice the crisscrossed pattern of folds running throughout the paper. There should be four squares in the center of the page; these squares will be the top of the photo box.
Step 7

Turn the page diagonally. Cut from the right side of the corner triangle until you reach the middle four boxes and stop. Do not cut into the four center boxes. Repeat with the left side of the corner triangle.
Step 8

Repeat on each corner, making two cuts down to the middle four boxes.
Step 9

Fold each flap up, and then fold down after the first square. Bring the top triangle down to the inside center, and glue in place. You are making the sides of the box.

Bottom of the Box

Step 1

Fold one corner of the second piece of paper to almost meet the opposite corner. Leave roughly 1/2 inch of space.
Step 2

Trim the excess paper. You should now have a triangle that is slightly smaller than the first. You will need the bottom box to be slightly smaller so that the top will fit properly.
Step 3

Repeat Steps 2 through 9 to create the box bottom.

How to Make a Fabric Cover for a Bookshelf

Use fabric to create a bookshelf cover.

Using a fabric cover for a bookshelf is aesthetically pleasing and practical. Customize the fabric cover by using fabric that matches the decor of the room the bookshelf is in. Fabric bookshelf covers protect books and other memorabilia in the bookshelf by creating a protective shield against dust, cleaning chemicals or excessive sunlight, which fades and ages books.

Difficulty: Moderate

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

Cotton canvas, twill or other fabric
Scissors
Sewing machine or needle and thread
Tension rods

Step 1

Decide where you will put the fabric bookshelf covers. Choose to cover every shelf or only select shelves.
Step 2

Measure the length and width of the shelf.
Step 3

Cut the fabric to the length and width of the shelf, adding one extra inch on all four sides.
Step 4

Sew a 1-inch hem on three sides using a sewing machine or needle and thread.
Step 5

On the fourth edge, fold over the loose edge and sew across, creating a pocket for the tension rod to go through.
Step 6

Feed the tension rod through the pocket in the top of the fabric and attach the tension rod to the sides of the bookcase shelf.
Step 7

Repeat the steps above for additional shelves.

How to Customize Button Molds

Use clay to make a button mold.

Using a button mold allows you to make many buttons that are the same shape and size. These molds come in handy if you want to match a button to a specific piece of clothing or furniture. Polymer clay is easy to use and sticks to itself, so if you have a chip in the mold you can add extra clay to even the surface out. Mix different colored clays together for custom-colored molds.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

Polymer clay
Various buttons
Wax paper

Step 1

Gather a piece of clay larger than the button you are using for the mold.
Step 2

Roll the clay into a ball.
Step 3

Cover a flat surface with a piece of wax paper.
Step 4

Place the clay ball on the wax paper and press the button into the top of the clay ball, flattening it. Press the button down until the back of the button is even with the rim of the clay mold.
Step 5

Allow the clay to dry for 20 to 30 minutes with the button still inside of it.
Step 6

Remove the button from the mold.

Are You Following The Seventeen Magazine Project Yet?

Last month, 18 year-old Jamie Keiles caught the attention of several women’s Web sites when she announced her plans to embark on an unprecedented experiment into the female adolescent experience: The Seventeen Magazine Project.

For her final month of high school, Jamie would live her life strictly adhering to the tips and advice in the June/July issue of Seventeen then blog about her daily endeavors and experiences.

It’s now Day 28 of the experiment and if you haven’t been following along with her, I encourage you to spend the day catching up.

By the time I got to Day 3, I was completely enamored with Jamie. In fact, I want to adopt her as my little sister.

Her posts are as insightful as they are humorous. So far she’s probed and tackled several poignant topics such as the magazine’s complete disregard for LGBT girls and the cultural insensitivity of their “tribal” fashion trend as well as the general ridiculousness of their editorial content.

Here’s an excerpt from her May 29th post:

“To go with my 'Bright Prints' look, I also got my nails done to follow the 'Bright Colors' trend that Danielle, age 15, from Minneapolis speaks so highly of. She writes, ‘Whenever I'm feeling down, I can just look at my nails and feel peppy!’ This is bleak. I wish Seventeen would suggest a hobby for Danielle so she didn't have to look to idle nail-gazing as her only source of joy.”

I also throughly enjoyed reading her comments about the “Free Hot Guy Mag” that came with the issue.

“The hotties are repetitively asked about their go-to moves, their relationship habits, and their theories on romance,” Jamie writes. “When Taylor Lautner is asked to describe his ideal girlfriend, three out of the four traits end up being things that glorify him, and the odd fourth is one that makes the girl in question look bad.”

She even included this cute little pie chart to show the celeb/vampire ratio of the Seventeen-approved hunks...

So what exactly inspired Jamie to put herself through 30+ days of torture?

Here’s what she said in an interview with IHeartDaily.com:

“Seventeen is marketed as a lifestyle magazine, but the lifestyle they appear to be selling is one that mostly includes clothes and makeup. By offering young girls this limited set of interests, I think that we are setting the bar very low for who we believe they are. Let’s give girls a little more credit, and something a little better to strive for.”

Today was Jamie's last day of high school and her graduation on June 21 will mark the end of her project.

In the fall she'll be heading to the University of Chicago where she plans on studying economics, gender studies, and sociology.

How to Make a Flower Luau Necklace Out of Tissue Paper

Make your own leis with tissue paper

Flower garland necklaces frequently worn at a luau are called "leis." Leis are popular in Hawaii and the Polynesian islands and are often a offering of greetings and friendship. In the summer, luau-themed parties are very popular and leis are a common party staple. Using tissue paper and string you can create your own leis in colors of your choosing.

Difficulty: Easy

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

Colored tissue paper, cut into 3-inch by 3-inch squares
Crochet needle
Crochet thread

Step 1

Thread the crochet needle with 3 feet of crochet thread.
Step 2

Tie a knot on the other end of the thread 3 inches from the end of the thread.
Step 3

Stick the crochet needle through the center of a stack of tissue paper squares. The squares do not need to be even on the sides, but they should all be even in the center. Experiment with how many squares you can press the needle through at one time to make the project run faster.
Step 4

Pull the tissue paper to the knot at the end of the thread.
Step 5

Continue this process until the lei has reached the desired length.
Step 6

Cut the thread from the needle and tie a knot at the end.
Step 7

Knot the two ends together to create a circular lei and place the lei around the neck.
