while i couldn't be happier about finally getting on the KCSB airwaves, i'm a little sad that the KJUC days are officially over. i've set up a new blog where you can start downloading our FM shows (tuesdays from 4AM to 6AM), including today's show. anyways, for anyone who spent some time listening to us, thanks. hope to see you on the FM side of the spectrum.

final episode of the quarter. on this show, we discuss further the tom cruise/katie holmes siutation, as well as an extended discussion of the broadcast flag and the file sharing court cases and their implications for how we as popular culture consumers consume and interact with cultural products and each other. hopefully in a few weeks we'll get called up to the big leagues on KCSB. i'll definitely keep y'all posted. until then, enjoy.

i, bob ngo the radio engineering idiot, forgot to record the first half hour of the show, which is the part of the show where ja'nean and i wax philosophically on the top 10 movies, CDs, and tv show of the week. i'm an idiot, i'm sorry. on a good note, our good friend stacie furia comes onto the show and talks about her research about representations of women in the military in film. good stuff. also, ja'nean and i also devote a good portion of the broadcast to rating the possible television shows for the upcoming fall season. the sound is pretty good, but it might be a little loud, which seems to only make my voice sound a little fuzzy. again, i'm an idiot, and the KJUC studios suck my ass. enjoy.

sorry this took so long in getting up. overall it's a pretty good show. we do the usual shtick, but we also do an exclusive interview with the double fake michael jackson that should be good for some chuckles. the interview starts about an hour into the show if you just want to check that out. unfortunately, we had some audio problems towards the end of the show we're jp's and my mike start to feedback on us. however, you can hear the double fake michael jackson loud and clear. anyways, other than that, i think that the show sounds fine. enjoy.

nice little show from me and jp. today's topics range from the katie holmes/tom cruise pseudo romance to an extended discussion of MTV's real world and it's place in pop culture. i just went with the cd recording so we only got 80 minutes of the show. the last five minutes or so got cut out, but it's really not that big a deal. enjoy.

rejoice, for we're back everybody! in this broadcast, i (bob) am not a part of the broadcast as i was out of town that weekend. in my place there is a very interesting conversation with our colleague joanna davis as she educates us on the finer points of the aries sign and her research about aging in the punk scene. thanks joanna!

also you should note, we had some technical difficulties with joanna's mic (big surprise here at KJUC) so for the first twnety minutes you can only hear ja'nean talking. while she always has good things to say, it's hard to figure out exactly what's going on sometimes since you can only hear half of the conversation. if you can't stand it, then skip forward to about 23:05 into the broadcast.

the reason that this is version 2.0 of the show is that jp and i actually did this show in the fall of 2003. i've set up an archives page where you can download those shows as well. and if you look a little bit to the right, you'll see that i've set up links to the official pop life home page as well as to the archives page.

i finally figured out how to record directly to my laptop. however, for some reason, the levels change about halfway through and it's hard to hear me. i had to do some amplifiying and then renormalization, so the first half, is kinda loud, so you'll probably want to turn down the volume a little bit.

the previous two episodes of pop life were lost due to technical difficulties in recording the show. for now, we've given up recording directly to my computer and settled on using the CD recorder in the studio. the advantage of this is that it's a lot easier for me to rip the CD and upload it to the website. the disadvantage is that you can only record 80 minutes of our 90 minute show, so the file ends rather abruptly as j and i are talking about the upcoming remake of tears in heaven. it's really too bad since i thought it was rather entertaining. like i said, we're working on solutions to getting the whole show recorded, but i would imagine that this will be the case for the next few weeks. we may edit out some of the music, but we haven't decided on anything yet.

hello everyone,

this is the first post in the pop life v2.0 blog. from this blog, you will be able to download mp3s of a radio show done by two UCSB sociology graduate students. the name of the show is Pop Life v2.0. The show focuses on the going ons of the world of entertainment and popular culture as viewed through the lens of the sociology of culture. during the winter quarter of 2005, we will be actually doing the show on KJUC 770/880 AM in Santa Barbara on thursdays from 2:30PM to 4PM. Unfortunately, this is not the official radio station of UCSB. rather KJUC is the training station for aspiring KCSB 91.9 FM (the offical station) and the only place that you can hear KJUC is in the UCSB residence halls. i've set up this blog so that our friends and anyone else interested can still listen to our show. the way it works is that i'll just post a link to the MP3 and you can download and listen to the show on any standard MP3 player. since the show is about an hour and half long, the files are rather large, anywhere between 18 to 30 MB, so people who don't have broadband, it'll take a while to download the show. my suggestion to you people is to either download it overnight, or download the show at work or school, transfer it to your USB drive or zip disk and then load it onto your computer.

a few more technical notes. everything on the show, on this blog is copyrighted. if you rip us off now, we probably don't have the resources to track you down and sue your ass, but at some point, if we do breakthrough to NPR or something, we're coming back for our stuff...and then your ass.

i'm using feedburner to syndicate the blog. and according to feedburner, i've set the RSS settings so that the feed is podcast ready. i still haven't completely figured out how exactly podcasting works, so if someone wants to try it out and let me know if it is working then led me know. anyways, if any of this means anything to you than just click on the little XML button on the right there.

i also wouldn't bookmark this url just yet. i'm in the process of setting up the blog on my server, so in all likelihood, the web address of this site will change in the next few weeks.

we are complete amateurs when it comes to this radio/broadcasting/news reporting stuff so please bear with us as we work through these kinds of technical issues on the show.

otherwise, i hope that you enjoy our pseudo-intellectual take on popular culture. we would welcome any feedback that you might have for our show in the comments section.
