When we spoke to esteemed pop singer/songwriter Bleu McAuley back in September, he expressed a fair amount of excitement about his forthcoming vinyl, Besides, a collection of unreleased tracks, or what we used to call b-sides back when we were still killing our dinner with rocks. (That is what folks did prior to iTunes, correct?) Released on limited-edition blue vinyl through Bleu’s website and now available digitally, Besides collects tracks that were, for various reasons, dropped from the final versions of his last two records, A Watched Pot and Four. As Bleu told us in the interview, “it’s not a throwaway b-sides type of thing… I really [want] it to hold up as a real piece of work.” Happily, it does – and what’s better, it functions as an alternate-world Bleu best-of from some parallel dimension. Most odds-and-sods collections exhibit, to some degree, the full spectrum of the artists’ talents, often ping-ponging between genres with abandon; Besides does this, yes, and as a result it sounds a bit more restless and less consistent (in tone, that is) than most Bleu albums, but it provides an appealing glimpse into the artist’s fidgety muse and, more importantly, collects a bunch of really cool Bleu tracks in one [...]

If you were wowed by the likes of Mumford & Sons last year, I urge you to check out Duluth, MN’s Trampled By Turtles. Drawing from the same well of Americana and folk influences (and with cooler beards,) this band has built a groundswell of support up over the past couple of years. I’ve seen them live twice in Boston-first at the Middle East Upstairs and most recently at the Paradise, where they rocked a sold-out crowd about as hard as a set of dudes with fiddles can rock a crowd. Their new album, Stars & Satellites, comes out this April. They recently released the album’s first single, “Alone” (awesome), some tour dates (including another date in Boston-awesome), and a little featurette video that gives you an idea of their sound if you’re not familiar. Definitely worth checking out. Alone by TrampledbyTurtles

Joseph Arthur is a prolific mad genius. Like contemporaries Ryan Adams and Robert Pollard, Arthur is a man who simply can’t seem to help making music. He once described songs that made up the four EPs he released in 2008 as “strange animals in a cosmic cage begging for release”; he released an album a scant seven months ago; and now, seemingly out of nowhere, he’s dumped Redemption City on his devoted fanbase as a free digital download, and surprisingly to absolutely no one, it’s a double album. The singer/songwriter/one-man band/gallery artist is a creative work horse; merely mentioning his work ethic conjures up images of an unshaven Arthur, frantically committing songs to tape in a smoky, dimly-lit NYC loft, stopping only to exasperatedly sling paint Pollock-style against an enormous wall-mounted canvas. (The veracity of these speculations has not been authenticated.) Pure conjecture, to be sure, but Redemption City practically begs for it; it’s lo-fi, rambling aesthetic conjures images of wee-hours bohemian city life better than any album since Bloc Party’s A Weekend in the City, or perhaps The National’s Boxer. Sonically, it’s an arm’s length from the melodic, gravelly folk of Arthur soundtrack favorites “In the Sun” and “Honey and the [...]

If Nothingface and Dog Fashion Disco are no longer making new music then I am quite content for Knives Out which features former members of both bands and their upcoming debut album Black Mass Hysteria (Due on February 14th). Knives Out is the perfect amalgamation of the two bands. Tom Maxwell’s guitars are so recognizable from his days in Nothingface as is the pummeling that his former ‘face mate Tommy Sickles delivers behind the drum kit (Maxwell has since departed to continue with HELLYEAH). On the Dog Fashion Disco/Polkadot Cadaver side you have Jasan Stepp on guitar and David Cullen on bass along with that very distinctive voice. The voice, of course, belongs to Todd Smith. He’s the guy leading the chant that opens “Blood Everywhere” and the guy whose very melodic voice makes the chorus transcend a typical metal song. One minute he sounds like the devil incarnate, the next he sounds like an angel. It’s the beauty of Smith and the beauty overall of the Knives Out sound. The ultra gory video for “Blood Everywhere” is below. Pre-order your copy of what’s sure to be the underground metal hit of 2012 here.

The NHL is in the annual mid-season lull known as the All-Star break. It’s a time for the league to celebrate itself with a skills competition, fan festival and of course, the All-Star Game itself. There’s just one problem: The NHL All-Star Game sucks. The game is designed to highlight the best players in the NHL, but it inevitably looks nothing like an NHL game and more like a game of pond hockey. There’s no defense, no hitting and the final score is usually something like 10-9, which is unheard of in a regular season or playoff game. It’s essentially an exhibition game with even less on the line. In recent years, the All-Star Game has been overshadowed by other events: The Winter Classic, the skills competition and the latest innovation, the players’ draft. This was a great idea from Brendan Shanahan that started with last year’s game; the fans vote in the starting lineup (don’t get me started on how dumb THAT is—the hometown fans in Ottawa this year stuffed the ballot box and voted in four Senators to the team) and the players draft the 36 remaining players (plus 12 rookies, who will participate in the skills competition).
