High Maintenance | Web Series

2014-05-01T14:53:00.003-04:00

This NYC-based project has gotten some deserved buzz as one of the best new(ish) web series out there. It revolves around loosely-connected vignettes focusing on a weed delivery man and his various clients. Check out the entire series at Helping You Maintain. Premiere episode "Stevie" and season standout "Trixie" embedded below.

Alex Karpovsky - Beyond "Girls"

2014-04-01T21:58:00.001-04:00

Probably best known to the millenial set as Ray from "Girls," Alex Karpovsky is a pretty prolific writer/director/actor in his own right, with some films on Netflix you should check out. Supporting Characters is a sharp indie romcom directed by Daniel Schechter, and Red Flag is a melan-comic(?) mumblecore road flick written and directed by Karpovsky himself with one of the best payoffs of a

This is an oldie but a goodie: my first mashups mixtape. I made a new trailer, a new upload, and a new download. We have fun here. Enjoy. (Missing 1 track on the streaming version due to Soundcloud's censor machine. FAIR USE, SOUNDCLOUD.) Download Full Mixtape (MediaFire)

Throwback Thursday: Melody Club - Goodbye To Romance

2014-02-13T10:04:00.001-05:00

A little Valentine's Day-themed throwback from Swedish new wavers Melody Club. Synthy glam rock/pop with a little hint of darkness. Earworms abound (check out that bridge on "She's The Girl"). Happy Valentine's Day, y'all.

Open Five

2013-08-30T14:53:00.001-04:00

An agreeably loose, low-key mumblecore flick about a weekend in the life of four romantically intertwined twenty-somethings. And it's available in full on YouTube. Why not?

Matt Duncan - Soft Times

2013-03-14T20:40:00.003-04:00

Hi. It's been a while since I discovered Matt Duncan via the gone-before-its-time Bored to Death. Just saw he has a new album out. You should listen, if you're into retro, folksy piano-pop with a punch of brass in the mix. Soft Times by Matt Duncan

Albums of 2k12

I'm not a big fan of top ten lists and the like, so here are just some albums I've enjoyed in anno domine two thousand and twelve. There are far more albums that I haven't gotten to hear yet, so let me know what I'm missing. Links are to Spotify. If you don't have it, well, get some. Kick Out the Jams: NYE 2012 Playlist

2012-11-29T21:38:00.001-05:00

As is my personal mini-tradition, I'm compiling a playlist of some jams that have come out in the past year. It's still a work in progress, so let me know if I've missed anything. Gotta say, we've still got a way to go, but 2012 has been a pretty good year. Hey, at least Mitt Romney isn't going to be President. Let's dance. Spotify link

Vacationer & French Horn Rebellion

2012-07-28T10:08:00.000-04:00

Saw these guys last night at the All Things Go anniversary showcase at the 9:30 Club. They were the group I was most looking forward to hearing at the showcase, and they didn't disappoint. If you've got an ear for mellow indie-pop, I'm betting they won't disappoint you either. Check them out on Soundcloud or Spotify. They were preceded by French Horn Rebellion, who are definitely worth

Frank Ocean

2012-07-04T10:04:00.001-04:00

A couple of days ago, rumors started bouncing around that there are some lyrics on Frank Ocean's upcomingChannel Orange that reveal he's bisexual. There weren't any specific lyrics cited, and Frank didn't make any comments on it, so it seemed likely that this was another case of the Internet twisting up some idea and running with it. But tonight, Frank Ocean published

La Blogotheque & Black Cab Sessions

I saw this new post from La Blogotheque and it made me think that I should share two of my favorite music performance video sites. If you're a live music enthusiast these may be old news to you, but for anyone who hasn't checked them out, they both put a cool spin on the performance video and present some familiar artists in unfamiliar and unique settings. Resident Evil trailers

2012-06-03T13:45:00.000-04:00

Can't say I've actually seen the movies or heard too much positive buzz about them, but the Resident Evil series has produced some pretty great hard-left-turn trailers. This latest one: ...reminds me of this previous one, one of the most memorable trailers I've seen:

Alex Winston at U Street Music Hall

2012-04-22T15:04:00.000-04:00

Having enjoyed Detroit-area* songstress Alex Winston's debut album King Con, I was excited to find out last-minute that she was hitting DC's "U-Hall" for a Thursday night show. This was both my first Winston show and first U-Hall show, and neither disappointed. The band sounded tight and the small venue made for an intimate concert. Look for them to make continued noise in the indie pop scene.

Bruce on Fallon

2012-03-03T15:36:00.000-05:00

Not too much to say about this one, except I wish I were there. Also, is "Death to My Hometown" the Bruce Springsteen-est song Bruce has ever written? Bonus video: Bruce, Stevie and The Roots tackle "Because The Night," from 2010. Bruce Springsteen - Because The Night from elvisisking45 on Vimeo.
