Dropbox

Dropbox is not only an awesome way to backup and synchronize files, but it’s also great to share files. We use it all the time to share big files with our co-workers and clients. It’s a program that installs on your computer and creates a folder called “My dropbox”. Anything you put in here will be synchronized with the internet for easy access from anywhere (with a password of course). In this folder, there’s also a folder called “Public”. Any file in here can be share with anyone via a simple link. All people have to so is click on the link Dropbox created and they can download the file.

Ge.tt

Ge.tt is a hip new file sharing tool where you don’t have to install anything. You don’t even need an account! All you do is go to http://Ge.tt and click “Select files”. Select the files from your computer and let Ge.tt do the work. You will receive a link to the files that you can share instantly, even when you’re still sending the files to Ge.tt. Make sure you keep your browser window open until the files are done sending!

YouSendIt

Yousendit is a website dedicated to sending big files via email. Go to the website, fill out the form on the front page, skip the paid options and send a big file. It’s as simple as that.

DropSend

Dropsend is the same kind of service as YouSendIt. Go to the site, fill out the form and send the files.

Everybody with a business needs a website. The days of effectively advertising in the newspaper are over, the phonebook became a fire starter and the pamphlets you sent out in the mail get thrown out as soon as people see the recycling-bin. People turn to the internet for information, and especially with new smart phones coming out with the ability to look up info online, there’s no denying it: you need a website.
About 70% of people in Saskatchewan turn to the internet to find out more about a business before they call or walk in the door.

You don’t have to have a big company to have a website. A website can be as simple as having your menu and phone number online for your take out restaurant. For example, if I want pizza, I want to check out the menu and make my decision in my own time. So, why not have a menu online and make it easy for people to pick their favorite pizza? It also prevents outdated menus and having to disappoint people. Add your phone number and people can make the order. It saves lines of people who can’t decide in your pizza place, and people are in and out in a jiffy.
Add the advantage of a menu-special on the site, which you can prepare in advance (I assume making 5 equal pizzas in 1 shot is easier than making them each separate), and you’re golden.

Ok, I know that’s in a perfect world, but prepared or not, this is where the world is headed.

What you need

You need an email address and  a bank account. This will be linked to your Paypal account to verify you’re an actual person, and for security reasons. Paypal offers secure and insured transfers. Depending on the transfer, you can be insured for amounts up to $3000.

What your client needs

Your client needs an email address, Paypal account, preferably connected to a bank account or credit card OR just a credit card.

What you do to receive money

Log in to your account and make sure you created a merchant account. If not, you can switch your account for free.
Click on the “Create an invoice” tab and select “Create detailed invoice”. Fill out the form that follows and the invoice is sent to your client.

What your client does to pay

Your client receives an email with the invoice and a link to Paypal where they can instantly pay the invoice with their Paypal credit or, if they dont have a Paypal account, they can use their credit card to pay.

Finish up the deal

In return, you will receive an email confirming the transaction, you’re good to go and send the order out to the client by courier or postal service.

Keep in mind

Although receiving money is free with Paypal, there is a 3.5% transaction fee if you want to transfer your Paypal funds to your regular bank account. For all Paypal fees, click “Fees” here.

Google Apps is Gmail for businesses. It looks professional and it integrates into your domain seamlessly. Google Apps is more than that, though. It has a calendar, a word processor and spreadsheet creator all in one, not to mention the .pdf-reader.

With Google apps, you can give all the people in your business their own email address, share documents and calendars (schedule meetings). You can use instant messaging through Google talk (you can turn this on and off). You can even create quick (intranet) sites for  your company event or collaboration.

The point is, that everything revolves around Google Mail, which I think is perfect for most of our clients.
It’s also more stable than our current webmail system. That’s why I’m offering all our existing clients the opportunity to switch to Google apps for free. New clients will have this option by default.
