The film is only 4 minutes long although it took him 2 weeks to make it and it features his original character Andong Agimat (in English, Andong of the Talisman) from his graphic novel of the same title.  The agimat or magical amulet has been part of folklore in the Philippines since the Spanish occupation and these little charms are believed to render the wearer / bearer invincible. In his graphic novel, the character Andong is armed with such a talisman and so he is able to ward off evil-doers in the city. The story in the video isn’t in his novel so just think of it “as a day in the life of Andong Agimat”.

He has no background nor previous experience in animation at all so I’m very proud of him for being able to pull it off on his own.

A brief explanation:

Taiyaki is a yummy Japanese fish-shaped cake with various fillings, the most common of which is red bean paste made from sweetened azuki beans. (Other common fillings include custard, chocolate, or cheese). Our taiyaki designs show the taiyaki mingling with some sweet red beans.

A Daruma doll, also known as a Dharma doll, is a round traditional Japanese doll modeled after Bodhidharma, the founder of the Zen sect of Buddhism. Usually made of papier mache, Daruma dolls symbolize perseverance or good luck and they are shaped in such a way that they will always return to an upright position when tilted over. The eyes are blank when sold so that the recipient can set a goal and fill up the other eye once the goal has been achieved.

Kokeshi are Japanese wooden dolls that have a simple trunk and an enlarged head. Our take on the kokeshi is a stylized and kawaii version of the traditional dolls with various flora patterns on their kimonos.

We’ve got some new stuff over at our niche shop Asian Popcorn. First, we have t-shirts with funny sushi graphics! Love sushi and sashimi? So do we! Maguro, Toro (slurp), Ikura, Ebi, Uni (mmm), name it, we’ll eat it. In honor of all the raw fish we’ve eaten, here now are graphic tees with cute little sushi characters having fun. As always, all designs are original.

This is also the first time I used solely Photoshop (I’m a vector believer) to make designs so you may note that the art style is different from what I usually make.  When I get better at using the Wacom Pen as a paintbrush, I promise to post a tutorial on how I made the artworks look like watercolor paintings.

And because I’m still learning to speak, read, and write Japanese, we have KANJI tees for the Japanese pop culture lover in you. Look cool and at the same time entertain and educate your friends with these cool slang words. You may customize the shirt by replacing the romaji with your own name.
