Congratulations! After searching long and hard at the shelters, through the newspaper and even enlisting friends and family in your search, you've found the right puppy! So what's next? Giving him/her a proper name of course!

So you think to yourself, just any 'ol name won't do. It's got to be unique, something different! Well, allow me to give you a few dog naming categories that will hopefully help you to come up with some really novel names for your four legged friend.

First though, when coming up with a name keep in mind a few things to watch out for.

- Stay away from names that might be potentially embarrassing to both you AND your dog. The name "Stinky" might be cute at first, but once the joke gets old, think of how you'll feel a year from now when you have to call "Stinky" home at night. Embarrassing names could also apply to negative words that might rhyme with your dogs name.

- There's been a tendency in recent years to give dogs human names. Though there's nothing wrong with this, be kind to your pooch and name him after someone you like. Also, if want to name him after someone you know, better check with that person first to see if it's alright. I'm not sure how much your human friend Max will like hearing, "Get off the couch Max!" or worse "We took Max to get fixed today."

- If possible, keep the name to one or two syllables. Dogs not only learn it quicker, but it makes them easier to train as well.

Getting a new puppy is an exciting time for a family. It's just like the arrival of a new baby! If there are kids in the family, then the event is even more thrilling. Hopefully, you have done your homework and read books on the subject and know all about the responsibilities of owning a new pet.

There's only one thing left to be done: finding the perfect name for your puppy.
How do you find the perfect name for your dog? Ideally, it should reflect its character, and even its physical appearance. If you already have a name in your mind because that's the one you have always dreamed for your dog, then congratulations. Your job is easy. If you don't have a name in mind, this will take some thinking, and even-as it was in our case-an official family meeting!

Would you like to name your dog like a famous philosopher-Homer, Plato, or Aristotle? Or perhaps like a famous scientist, like Einstein or Mr. Hawking? What about a biblical name like Noah? Or maybe a goofy name like Wacky or Taffy? Or even a food name, like Honey or Cinnamon? What about a common name like Sam, Max, or Lady?

In my children's picture book, CRASH, five-year old Marcelo sets out to find the perfect name for his new golden retriever puppy. His parents keep making suggestions, but Marcelo refuses, as he must find not just any name, but the perfect name for his beloved new puppy. Finally, something really peculiar about the puppy helps Marcelo come up with the perfect name.
So observe your puppy carefully. Maybe it has a quirk or odd character trait which belongs only to it, and one which will help you come up with the ideal name.

There are hundreds of sites online to help you choose the perfect dog name. Just do a search for 'dog names' on Google.

Ideally, the name you give your puppy should be short (one or two syllables), and should not sound like another member of the family's or like a dog command, for obvious reasons. But this isn't a rule and in reality, the sky is the limit.

The variety of opinions about dog names can create quite a discussion; This is what happened in our family as we tried to pick a dog name prior to getting a new puppy. Should we pick a traditional dog name like Boots or Sheba? Maybe we should opt for a human name like Harvey or Jenny.

The "traditional" camp claims that a dog is not a human being and should never be given a human name. The question then arises: After what should our dog be named? I thought we could name our dog after some piece of food. After all, eating would be one of our dog's primary functions. Biscuit didn't seem like a bad name. Strawberry was another suggestion. Or we could combine those thoughts and name our dog, Shortcake. Since we are considering a larger dog, that idea was abandoned.

The "human" supporters will argue that the dog is "one of the family" and should be given a name like any other family member. It is true that we often treat our pets just like human beings--sometimes maybe even better. However, while names like Maynard and Merlin are used for dogs, I have a hard time imagining that we would still give one of those names to a human being!

I suppose we could say that "human" dog names have a certain flare about them. If we are inclined towards historical figures, we might name our dog Caesar or Napoleon. We might want to consider, however, if the name is a reflection of our dog's personality. Maybe Napoleon would be fitting for a miniature dog breed, but then the historical Napoleon might not have the kind of personality we are looking for in a family dog.

If we are patriotic, we might find dogs named after American presidents to our liking. We could name our dog Lincoln or Jefferson. (This assumes a high intelligence or moral character in our dog. Yeah, right!) How do the names Nixon and Hoover sound? We will want to be careful that we do not pick a name that is confusing to our family members. If mom says, "Take Hoover outside," we might have the only child in the city walking the vacuum cleaner.

The same problem might exist if we give our dog a very common human name, like Mike, for example. Some people might confuse Mike with one of our children. Or the neighbor's kid--also named Mike-- may never want to come over to our house if "mom" is always telling Mike to stop whining and behave. Then there is the hassle of getting junk mail and credit card applications in Mike's name. Hmm- I wonder what his credit score would be!

Finally, after all the discussions and agonizing, I thought we finally had a solution. Our daughter suggested that we name the new puppy after a cartoon character, like Snoopy or Goofy. "No," my wife said, "those are your father's nicknames."

1. Avoid names that sound like common commands such as Go, Stay, Sit, etc. This might cause confusion for your puppy when trying to train it.

6. Beware of the common trend to name dogs after people. Though doing so is not a bad thing in itself, if you name your pup after a friend or family member, they might take offense. Although you might think naming your dog Sally after your favorite Aunt is an honor, Aunt Sally might not. Also, be kind to your dog and name her after someone you like.

First and foremost, always pick a name that the pet can easily recognize. Animals usually respond better to names comprising of no more than two syllables. The name you choose says as much about you as it does about your pet; don’t burden your new puppy (and yourself ultimately), with what I call “clever” names. It may be extremely chic to name your new puppy Slobber Tongue, but how embarrassed will you feel standing in the middle of the dog park calling him?

The name you choose goes a long way in indicating the relationship you have with the pet in question. The name very often determines how strangers react when encountering it for the first time. As an example, if your Rottweiler is called Killer, you should expect strangers to react negatively and maybe even fearfully when meeting it.

Also, when naming a dog, be especially careful not to pick a name that sounds like any of the standard commands you will be using: Sit, Fetch, No, Down, Stay, etc. As an example, to a dog "No" sounds the same as "Joe"; “Mit” sounds too much like “Sit”. Who can resist a smile when they see a Dachshund running across the grass? Ears flopping, tail wagging like a flag behind them, their little paws reaching as far as they can while their long body flexes back and forth like a slinky.

Can you imagine yourself in that grassy field with your little Dachshund by your side? He runs to chase a butterfly and when you get ready to call him back to you, anticipating the sight of him with those floppy ears and happy tail, you call out his name and it’s the best name ever for a little wiener dog. But what is it?

If you want an unusual, unique, different and well thought-out dachshund dog name that is carefully considered and researched especially for the wonderful qualities of your little wiener dogs, you’re going to have to think out of the long, hot-dog shaped box. Another source of great names is Greek mythology, along with Egyptian and Roman. Movies can also provide great names. Look for characters that remind you of your little wiener. Hobbits in particular seem to resemble Dachshunds in that they are small but sturdy and playful yet diligent.

Don’t forget that there's a reason Dachshunds are in the top ten of all dog breeds as ranked by the AKC (they were number 6 in popularity in 2006) Everyone loves them so take great care in giving yours a memorable and important name. One of the more hilarious names for a pup I have ever run across was Dioji. A neighbor of mine had a mutt by this name and absolutely loved the pup. Frankly, I think the dog lived better than he did. One lazy day, I asked him where he came up with such an exotic name for the pet and what it meant. He looked at me like I was an idiot and told me to say the name slowly. D..o..g.

Notwithstanding this humorous approach, it is important to give some thought to naming you pup since it is going to most likely be permanent. If you are thinking about popular names, there are more than a few for pups. Popular names for male dogs include Max, Bud, Rusty, Tucker and so on. For females, names such as Lucy, Tessie, Missy and so on are also popular. You can’t really go wrong with such names, but some pet owners want something a bit more unique.

When it comes to unique names for your pup, the key is to make sure you understand what the name means. While an exotic name sounds great, you can feel a little silly when someone tells you the name means “stove” in another language.

An interesting approach to picking a name is to look to historical figures. The names tend to be catch and most people with recognize them. Because dog confusion is a major obstacle to training success, what you name your dog and how you use that name can determine your success in his training and behavior.

Dogs are vocal, not verbal. How words sound is important to them, so consider that then choosing names and commands. To your dog, the words "No," "Know," "Beau" and "Joe" are the same sound; the dog will have trouble knowing which you mean. If you name him "Beau" and use "No!" as a reprimand, saying, "Beau, you know what I want!" reprimands him twice although you didn't intend a single one!

You always want your dog to come to you when you call him, so how much sense does it make to name your dog "Beau" and use "NO!" as your reprimand? He'll have trouble knowing whether you called him or yelled at him.

I like to have a dog choose his name. There are two ways to do this. First, spend enough time with the dog to really get to know his personality and select a suitable name. For example, when new to us my Husky-mix not only jumped on me, he pinned me to the wall and took stuff out of my shirt pocket! I said to my wife: "Look at this! I'm getting mugged!" Naturally, he became Mugger! A client had a very rambunctious Great Dane pup and I love the name she chose: Chaos! Let the dog earn his name!

Another way is to make a list of your favorite names and--in a playful and animated voice--try them on the dog. The one to which the dog reacts best is IT! And he WILL react differently to different names! Try it!

Contrary to popular belief, a dog's name should change with every new owner. The old thought was that once a dog recognized hits name, you couldn't or shouldn't change it. Wrong! Since many owners make the mistake of using the name with a reprimand, or even AS the reprimand, if you keep the old name you tell the dog you're one of THEM--the former crew.

If the dog is now yours, you can't presume former owners did everything right. If they did, you probably wouldn't have him. And you're trying to tell the dog this is a new start in a new home, right? Then why use the old name--especially when it was likely used negatively in the past?
Be sure to teach the dog his new name by using it only with things the dog likes such as treats, praise, meals and love and affection. And don’t choose a new name that sounds a lot like the old one, like “Bo” and “Noah”.

Use the new name consistently and positively ONLY with things the dog likes and within a week or two he should respond nicely. We changed the names of two of our dogs and now they ignore the old names.

The act of chewing seems to be a matter of individual choice among dogs: some have a desire to chew as a pleasurable activity in itself, and some seem to have no need to chew at all unless they’re bored.

The phrase “destructive chewing” may sound redundant, because – of course! – all chewing is destructive. Your dog has powerful jaws full of sharp, pointy teeth: just about anything she starts to chew on is probably going to show the effects of it inside of a minute. So to clarify things, when I use the term “destructive chewing”, I’m referring to inappropriate chewing: the kind of chewing that destroys your own possessions and household items, rather than your dog’s designated toys and chews.

Three basic reasons why dogs chew:

- Most dogs have a natural desire to chew. It’s fun, it passes the time, and it’s a self-rewarding, reinforcing activity (for example, if he's chewing on something that tastes good.)

- Chewing may provide a nervous, bored, or lonely dog with an emotional outlet. To an anxious dog, the repetitive act of chewing may be soothing – it’s like the dog equivalent of a comfort food.
-Underexercised dogs may use chewing as a way of burning up nervous energy and as an outlet for activity.

- How to prevent destructive chewing -

Dogs are capable of learning not to chew your possessions – you just have to put in a little effort to instruct them, that’s all.

1. Take control of the situation: manage your possessions. The first step should be to dog-proof your home. Even if you have the best-behaved dog in the world, there’s still no reason to test his self-control – remember, dogs naturally explore the world with their mouths.

Dog-proofing means making your prized possessions, unavailable. Consider her size and agility when deciding whether something’s out of reach: can she jump? Can she climb, or leap onto something else to reach the desired object? How tall is she when standing on her back legs?

Common targets of opportunity in the home may include books, eyewear, clothing, shoes, garbage, and small crunchy appliances like cameras, cell phones, remote controls and of course, food.

It should go without saying that all food needs to be put securely away: don’t leave snacks on low tables (or even countertops – you’d be surprised how acrobatic she can be when there’s food at stake!), put all food into containers or the pantry. Rinse your dirty plates clean of any food scraps before leaving them by the sink.

2. Prevent her from learning the joys of illegal chewing. The more times she manages to snatch a jawful of a forbidden substance – a chair-leg, a pillow, a running shoe – the more readily she’ll target those items in future. If you can prevent her from chewing your possessions, in the first place, the easier for her to understand what you expect . Practically speaking, this means confining her in a dog-proofed area until you’re confident of her understanding of the house rules.

3. Don’t set her up for failure by blurring the boundaries between her stuff (OK to chew) and your stuff (not OK to chew). Don’t offer your dog cast-off clothing, shoes, or towels to chew and play with: realistically, you can’t possibly expect her to be able to tell the difference between your current shoes and the one she’s got in her mouth that you gave her five minutes ago.

4. Provide lots of tasty alternatives to your possessions. If her environment is relatively devoid of attractive, appropriate chewing objects, you can hardly blame her for targeting your stuff. Remember, most dogs need to chew; if she’s an adolescent (under three years) or a puppy (under one year), her needs will be even more pronounced. Go on a toy and chew shopping spree, then give her two or three to play with at a time. Rotating the available toys every few days will keep things novel and interesting.

5. Spend time in active supervision. Yes, it might be easier for you to just keep her penned up in her crate, run, or the yard – but that’s boring and bad for her, and hardly much fun for you either (if you wanted a pet that you don’t need to interact with, you could have gotten a goldfish, right?) She can’t learn what's expected of her, if she’s spending all her time boxed up in the dog-proof zone: she needs the opportunity to explore the boundaries of your expectations, so she can understand what’s appropriate and what’s not.

6. When you catch her chewing something inappropriate, interrupt her by making a loud noise: clap your hands or make an “Ah-ah-aaaah!” noise. Then, immediately hand her a tasty and dog-appropriate alternative (a rawhide bone or other chew toy); as soon as her jaws close around it, praise her lavishly. There is no better way to get your dog to understand that chewing “her” toys equals praise from you, but everything else equals trouble.

- Always maintain a productive attitude -

Above all, remember to keep realistic expectations.. You’re not perfect, and neither is your dog: there’s likely to be at least one incident where a cherished item is damaged by her curiosity.
Particularly in the early stages of your relationship, while she’s still learning the ropes: it’ll take awhile before she’s completely reliable (and even then, if she’s left by herself for too long, or feels neglected, she may revert to choosing your stuff over hers, to occupy her time and jaws with.) Remember give her time to learn the rules, and plenty of ‘you-time’ to help her learn faster – and don’t forget to take precautions and keep things out of reach until she’s got the hang of the chewing rules!

So you just purchased an Italian Greyhound puppy, or something even more exotic like a Neapolitan Mastiff or a Volpino Italiano, and you need a decent designer name for this little head turner, something that will match with perfect style.

Supposing this is a little male, some authentic names such as Agosto (venerable), or Zanipolo (little gift of God) might fill the bill. If you should happen to have both a male and female pup, how about naming them Fedele and Felice or Ugo and Vanni? Great names for great dogs go hand-in-hand. Some of these would also be perfect for the rescue you adopted from the shelter.

You never know; you might end up being more confused with your dog’s name than your dog is with his name.

Third, avoid choosing names that are used for commands such as go, sit, stand, heel, jump, and the like. Training your dog to respond to such commands will be difficult if you name him after a command you expect your dog to follow.

Fourth, choosing a name which consists of one or two syllables is also recommended. This is easier understood by dogs so learning it will be also a breeze for your pet.
Fifth, don’t pick out a name which may have a negative meaning or implication. Saying the dog’s name which is negative in nature will most likely be said in a negative manner as well. Moreover, chances are you won’t be the only one calling your dog by his name so you might want to look for other alternatives. Names which are too embarrassing to say are also out of the question. Dogs are smart animals. You never know; they just might get a hint of the negative appeal of the name that you have chosen.

Finally, once you’ve decided on a name for your dog, you can’t really change it unless you want the dog to end up being confused. Once you have chosen a name and used it, stick to it or your dog may end up in the doggieland’s equivalent of a mental asylum.
