India's Democracy Faces a Moment of Extraordinary Public Anxiety

India, the world's largest democracy, is passing through a deeply disturbing political controversy.

At the centre of the storm is Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, and the growing demand from opposition parties and civil-society groups that the CEC should resign.

The controversy has now moved far beyond an ordinary political disagreement. It has reached the streets, the Supreme Court and the national political debate.

The fundamental question being asked by millions of concerned citizens is simple:

Can a democracy remain healthy if citizens begin to lose confidence in the independence and impartiality of the institution responsible for conducting its elections?

The SIR Controversy

The Election Commission says that the Special Intensive Revision is intended to clean electoral rolls by identifying people who have died, moved away, are duplicated or otherwise do not qualify to remain registered.

There is nothing inherently wrong with correcting electoral rolls. In fact, an accurate voter list is essential to a free and fair election.

The controversy arises because of the scale and manner of the deletions.

In Delhi, the draft electoral roll published after the SIR exercise contained about 47.7 lakh fewer names than the approximately 1.45 crore voters on the earlier roll—meaning roughly one in three voters was provisionally left out of the draft list. Officials said that the affected category included people whose enumeration forms were not received and people classified as absent, shifted, deceased, duplicated or otherwise uncollectible. A process for claims and objections was provided.

That explanation, however, has not ended the controversy.

Opposition leaders and activists argue that legitimate voters could be disenfranchised if their names disappear from the rolls because of administrative errors, inability to submit documents or difficulties in completing the verification process.

The seriousness of the concern can be understood from examples being highlighted publicly.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, for example, alleged that in Delhi's Bela Estate, 727 out of 728 names had disappeared from the voter list after SIR. This is an allegation made by Rahul Gandhi and should not be treated as a judicially established fact without further verification.

Nevertheless, allegations of this magnitude cannot simply be dismissed as political noise. They deserve transparent investigation.

The Supreme Court Enters the Picture

The controversy became even more serious when the Supreme Court began examining questions surrounding the Election Commission's actions.

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana, heard petitions challenging aspects of the functioning of the Election Commission and the SIR exercise.

The petitions raised, among other things, allegations that some important decisions connected with SIR were taken without the concurrence of the other two Election Commissioners.

The Supreme Court issued notices to the Election Commission and the Centre.

Importantly, however, the Supreme Court did not suspend CEC Gyanesh Kumar at this stage. It chose to seek responses before taking further action.

This distinction is important.

The Court's intervention does not prove that the allegations against the CEC are true. But neither does it permit the government or the Election Commission to pretend that there are no serious questions requiring answers.

Did the Supreme Court Approve the Controversial Form 6 Changes?

Another particularly sensitive issue concerns Form 6, which is used for the inclusion of new voters.

Reports have stated that the Election Commission had claimed judicial backing for an additional declaration associated with the voter-registration process.

The Supreme Court subsequently made it clear that it had not approved modifications to Form 6 and indicated that it wanted to examine who had authorised the changes.

This is one of the most important developments in the entire controversy.

If an electoral authority publicly invokes the Supreme Court's authority, while the Court itself says that it did not approve a particular modification, the matter naturally demands a clear explanation.

For democracy to function, electoral rules must not only be lawful—they must also be transparent and trusted by the people.

The Opposition's Demand for the CEC's Resignation

Opposition parties have now intensified their demand for the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other INDIA bloc leaders have participated in protests, while several opposition parties and civil-society groups have accused the Election Commission of compromising the integrity of the electoral process.

The Election Commission and the BJP have rejected the allegations.

The protests have also resulted in confrontations with the police. On October 8, opposition leaders including Rahul Gandhi and other INDIA bloc MPs held another demonstration in Delhi. Earlier attempts to march towards the Election Commission and Jantar Mantar resulted in detentions and confrontations with police.

The government has a legitimate responsibility to maintain public order.

On September 26, the Election Commission stated that the declaration attached to Form 6 for the SIR exercise had been upheld by the Supreme Court. The ECI referred to the Supreme Court's May 2026 judgment concerning the Bihar SIR exercise as the basis for its position.
But on October 5, 2026, the matter took a dramatic turn when Chief Justice of India Surya Kant clarified in open court that the Supreme Court had not approved any modified Form 6.
The CJI stated:
“Any modified Form 6 has not been approved by us. Let us be clear.”
He further indicated that, once the Election Commission submitted its report, the Court wanted to know who had made the modification.
This clarification is extremely important.
The issue is not merely whether the Election Commission had the authority to conduct an SIR. The Supreme Court's May 2026 judgment did recognise the Election Commission's authority to conduct the Bihar electoral-roll revision and to seek appropriate documentation, subject to safeguards and judicial review.
The controversy concerns something more specific: whether the particular modified Form 6 and its additional declaration had actually received the Supreme Court's approval.
According to the Supreme Court's Chief Justice, it had not.
That raises an obvious question:

If the Supreme Court did not approve the modified Form 6, why was its judgment cited as judicial backing for that modification?

This is a question that the Election Commission should answer clearly and publicly.
The matter becomes even more significant because petitions before the Supreme Court allege that several decisions connected with the electoral process, including SIR-related decisions, were taken unilaterally by CEC Gyanesh Kumar without the concurrence of the other two Election Commissioners. The Supreme Court has issued notice to the Election Commission, the CEC and other concerned authorities and has sought their response.
At this stage, these allegations remain allegations under judicial examination, not established findings of wrongdoing.
Nevertheless, the CJI's clarification regarding Form 6 is a matter of public record and deserves serious attention.
For an institution entrusted with conducting India's elections, even the appearance that a Supreme Court judgment has been used to justify a procedure that the Court itself says it did not approve can seriously affect public confidence.
The appropriate response is therefore not political rhetoric from either side, but complete transparency about who authorised the modification, under what legal authority it was made, and why the Supreme Court's judgment was cited in support of it.
The answers to those questions should be made available to the citizens of India.

The Earlier Dharmendra Pradhan Episode

There is, however, a striking political parallel with what happened earlier this year.

The Cockroach Janta Party led a major youth movement demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan amid allegations and controversies surrounding examination irregularities and paper leaks.

After weeks of protests, Pradhan resigned on July 25, 2026. The CJP subsequently called off its agitation, describing the resignation as a victory for the movement.

That episode demonstrated something important:

Public pressure can have consequences even in a powerful government.

The present controversy is therefore being viewed by many citizens through the lens of that earlier political victory.

Will the present agitation produce a similar outcome?

Nobody can know yet. But many people are of the opinion that the removal of Gyanesh Kumar will affect Modi and Amith Sha who have appointed and authorised him to do all these!

What About Allegations of Election Rigging?

There is another issue that cannot simply be ignored.

For years, opposition leaders and activists have raised allegations concerning the integrity of India's electronic voting system and the possibility of manipulation benefiting the ruling party.

However, allegations of EVM manipulation and claims that the BJP won the 2024 Lok Sabha election through such manipulation have not been judicially established as facts.

This distinction is essential.

A democratic society must permit citizens to ask difficult questions about elections. At the same time, serious allegations must ultimately be established through credible evidence, investigation and judicial scrutiny.

The present SIR controversy is different in one important respect: there are now specific questions concerning electoral-roll revisions, Form 6 changes and the internal functioning of the Election Commission that are themselves receiving judicial attention.

That is why the issue deserves an independent and transparent examination rather than partisan dismissal.

Is the BJP Government Making a Political Mistake?

This is perhaps the biggest political question.

The BJP government can defend the Election Commission.

It can argue that SIR is necessary.

It can reject Rahul Gandhi's allegations.

It can point out that the Election Commission is an independent constitutional institution.

All of these are legitimate political positions.

But there is another option:

Transparency.

If the government is confident that the electoral process is completely clean, why not welcome the strongest possible independent investigation?

Why not publish the relevant data?

Why not explain every major category of deletion?

Why not make the restoration of legitimate voters simple and accessible?

Why not allow independent experts to examine the process?

And why not allow the Supreme Court to examine every disputed issue without political pressure?

Such steps could actually strengthen the government's position.

Suppressing Protest Can Create a Bigger Problem

The government must also be extremely careful about its response to public demonstrations.

Recent protests have involved detentions and heavy police deployment. Reuters reported that opposition leaders accused police of excessive force, while police rejected those accusations.

The government has every right to impose reasonable restrictions when necessary to maintain public safety.

But excessive suppression can have the opposite effect.

When peaceful citizens are prevented from protesting, detained or confronted by police, their original complaint can become secondary.

The political narrative can change from:

"Is the voter list accurate?"

to:

"Why is the government afraid of people asking questions?"

That would be a dangerous development for any government.

The Real Danger Is Not the Protest—It Is Loss of Trust

Democracy does not depend only on elections being held.

It depends upon citizens believing that elections are fair.

A voter who loses confidence in the Election Commission may begin to doubt the entire electoral process.

A political party that believes the voter list is being manipulated may refuse to accept election results.

Citizens who believe their names can disappear from the electoral roll without adequate protection may lose faith in their constitutional rights.

And once trust in elections is damaged, rebuilding it can take years.

This is why the present controversy should not be treated merely as another BJP-versus-Congress political battle.

It concerns something much bigger:

The credibility of Indian democracy itself.

What Should Happen Now?

Instead of allowing the controversy to become an endless political confrontation, India needs a transparent process.

At least five things deserve serious consideration:

1. An independent examination of the SIR deletions

The reasons for every major category of deletion should be publicly documented and independently auditable.

2. Easy restoration of genuine voters

No genuine citizen should lose the right to vote because of a technical or administrative difficulty.

3. Full transparency regarding Form 6

The controversy surrounding modifications to Form 6 should be completely explained.

4. Judicial scrutiny must be respected

The Supreme Court has already entered the matter. All institutions should allow the judicial process to proceed without intimidation or political interference.

5. Political parties should avoid making unproved allegations into established facts

Whether the allegation comes from the BJP, Congress or any other political organisation, evidence must ultimately decide the truth.

The Government Has an Opportunity

The BJP government may regard the present agitation as an attempt by the opposition to weaken it.

The opposition, meanwhile, sees the issue as a struggle to protect voting rights and democratic institutions.

Both sides cannot be right about every allegation.

But the government can still turn this crisis into an opportunity.

If the Election Commission is innocent of wrongdoing, prove it transparently.

If the SIR process is legitimate, show the evidence.

If the deletions are justified, explain them constituency by constituency.

If legitimate voters have been wrongly removed, restore them immediately.

And if any official has acted outside the law, let the law take its course.

That is not weakness.

That is democracy.

The Question Every Indian Should Ask

India has survived governments of many political colours.

It has survived wars, emergencies, political crises, corruption scandals and enormous social conflicts.

But the strength of India has always depended upon one fundamental principle:

The vote belongs to the citizen—not to the government, not to the opposition, and not to any political party.

The Election Commission exists to protect that principle.

Therefore, any allegation that millions of genuine citizens may have been excluded from electoral rolls deserves the most serious possible examination.

At the same time, accusations that the CEC deliberately acted to benefit the BJP, or that previous elections were rigged through voting machines, should be presented honestly as allegations unless and until established by credible evidence.

That balance is essential.

India does not need blind faith in the government.

India does not need blind faith in the opposition either.

India needs faith in the truth.

And the best way to protect the world's largest democracy is not to silence the questions—but to answer them.

A Final Appeal for Democratic Responsibility

At this moment of extraordinary political tension, the responsibility does not belong only to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Rahul Gandhi, the BJP, the Congress or the Election Commission.

It belongs to every Indian citizen.

Let the protests remain peaceful.

Let the police act with restraint.

Let journalists investigate without fear.

Let political parties produce evidence rather than rumours.

Let the Election Commission answer every legitimate question.

Let Parliament debate the issue.

And above all, let the Supreme Court perform its constitutional role without pressure from any side.

Because governments come and go.

Political parties win and lose.

But Indian democracy belongs to generations yet unborn.

That is why every voter whose name appears—or disappears—from the electoral roll matters.

And that is why the present controversy must be resolved not through political intimidation, but through truth, transparency, evidence and the Constitution of India.

If Freedom Is for Everyone, Why Is a Christian's Freedom Treated with Suspicion?

A Constitutional Question India Cannot Afford to Ignore

India proudly describes itself as a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic. The word “secular” was expressly added to the Preamble by the 42nd Constitutional Amendment.

But what does secularism actually mean?

It means that the State does not belong to one religion. It means that a citizen's religious identity should not determine the degree of freedom he or she enjoys. It means that the Constitution protects the believer, the convert, the non-believer and the person who changes his or her faith.

Most importantly, Article 25 of the Constitution declares that all persons are equally entitled to freedom of conscience and the right freely to profess, practise and propagate religion, subject to public order, morality and health.

That raises an uncomfortable question:

If an Indian citizen is genuinely free to choose almost every major aspect of his or her life, why should choosing or changing one's religion be treated as something requiring special suspicion from the State?

The Growing Network of Anti-Conversion Laws

A number of Indian states have enacted laws generally described as Freedom of Religion Acts or anti-conversion laws.

Among the BJP-ruled states, such legislation exists in states including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Rajasthan. Maharashtra's Freedom of Religion legislation was also enacted in 2026. Arunachal Pradesh has an older Freedom of Religion law dating from 1978, whose implementation has become a major subject of controversy in recent years.

These laws are not identical. Most governments defend them as measures against conversion by force, fraud, coercion or improper inducement.

There is an obvious legitimate purpose here: nobody should be forced to change religion. Nobody should be deceived into changing religion. Nobody should be threatened into changing religion.

That principle deserves universal support.

But the constitutional question begins when legislation goes beyond preventing coercion and starts placing the private conscience of an adult citizen under governmental suspicion.

Several state laws have included requirements such as advance declarations to government authorities, police inquiries, public notices, restrictions concerning interfaith marriage and provisions shifting the burden of proof onto the accused.

That deserves serious democratic scrutiny.

Consider the Freedoms We Take for Granted

An adult Indian citizen can generally choose his or her political beliefs.

A citizen can support the BJP.

Another can support the Congress.

Another can support the Communist parties.

Another can support a regional party.

Another can support no political party at all.

Subject to the Constitution and ordinary laws, a citizen can vote for the candidate of his or her choice, express political opinions, participate in political activity and peacefully campaign for a political cause.

Why?

Because freedom of conscience and expression are fundamental to democracy.

The same principle applies to education.

A young Indian can aspire to become a doctor, engineer, teacher, lawyer, scientist, artist, priest, entrepreneur, farmer or anything else permitted by law.

A person may choose a profession and change careers.

Again, the State does not normally demand:

“Before you decide what you want to study, report your intention to the District Magistrate.”

Why should the exercise of religious conscience automatically invite such extraordinary scrutiny?

What About Marriage?

An adult citizen has a constitutionally protected interest in choosing a spouse.

The Supreme Court has repeatedly recognized individual autonomy, privacy, dignity and decisional freedom under Article 21.

Two consenting adults from different communities may fall in love.

A Hindu may marry a Christian.

A Christian may marry a Muslim.

A Muslim may marry a Hindu.

Two people belonging to different castes may marry.

The Constitution does not say that a citizen must obtain the government's permission before falling in love.

Yet when religion becomes involved, some laws have created special procedures and criminal consequences around interfaith relationships and conversions.

This creates an important question:

Is religious freedom genuinely equal if choosing another faith—or marrying someone of another faith—automatically places the citizen under a higher level of governmental suspicion?

What About the Freedom Not to Believe?

A secular Constitution must protect not only believers but also non-believers.

A citizen may believe in God.

Another may follow Hinduism.

Another Christianity.

Another Islam.

Another Sikhism, Buddhism or Jainism.

Another may follow another religious tradition.

And another may say:

“I do not believe in God.”

The State cannot demand that every citizen possess the same religious conviction.

That is the very essence of freedom of conscience.

Article 25 begins with precisely that concept: freedom of conscience.

And conscience is not something the government manufactures.

It belongs to the individual.

Then Why Should a Change of Religion Be Treated Differently?

Suppose an adult Indian citizen studies Christianity and becomes convinced that the Christian faith is true.

Suppose he reads the Bible.

Suppose she attends a Christian prayer meeting.

Suppose they speak with Christians.

Suppose, after freely considering the matter, they decide:

“I believe in Lord Jesus Christ. I want to become a Christian.”

Where is the crime?

If there is force, punish the force.

If there is fraud, punish the fraud.

If there is criminal coercion, punish the coercion.

If someone deliberately deceives another person, the law already has powerful tools to deal with deception.

But if an adult exercises genuine freedom of conscience, why should the mere change of religion be treated as inherently suspicious?

That is the constitutional question that deserves an answer.

The Supreme Court Has Already Drawn an Important Distinction

There is an important legal distinction that critics of anti-conversion legislation should not ignore.

In the 1977 Rev. Stainislaus judgment, the Supreme Court held that Article 25 protects the right to propagate religion but does not create a fundamental right to forcibly convert another person. The Court upheld laws directed at conversion by force, fraud and inducement.

Therefore, a responsible constitutional criticism cannot simply say:

“Every anti-conversion law is unconstitutional.”

That is too broad.

The more serious question is:

Does a particular law merely prevent force, fraud and coercion—or does it unnecessarily interfere with the voluntary exercise of an individual's freedom of conscience?

That distinction is crucial.

And it is precisely why the newer laws deserve judicial and public scrutiny.

The Problem of Vague and Overbroad Powers

Some of the newer legislation uses concepts such as “allurement,” “inducement,” “undue influence,” “misinformation,” “propaganda” and similar terminology.

The problem is not necessarily that these concepts can never be regulated.

The problem is how broadly they are defined and how they are enforced.

Imagine a Christian charity providing education to a poor child.

Imagine a Christian hospital treating a poor patient.

Imagine a Christian organisation providing food during a disaster.

Imagine a Christian speaking publicly about the Gospel.

Imagine someone saying:

“My faith in Lord Jesus Christ changed my life.”

These activities must not automatically become grounds for suspicion that someone is attempting an unlawful conversion.

Otherwise, the line between legitimate religious propagation and criminalised religious activity becomes dangerously blurred.

Indeed, some state laws have generated precisely these constitutional concerns. Petitions challenging anti-conversion laws in several states have reached the Supreme Court, with petitioners arguing that some provisions are vague, overbroad and capable of excessive police discretion.

The Rajasthan Example

The Rajasthan Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2025 is a particularly important recent example.

The law prohibits conversion through various means including force, coercion, undue influence, allurement, misinformation, online solicitation and certain marriage-related circumstances. It also contains significant criminal penalties. The Act came into force in October 2025.

A Rajasthan High Court judgment in September 2026 also acknowledged the constitutional position that conversion itself is an individual's choice, while holding that the State may prohibit conversion through the particular unlawful means specified by the legislation.

This is precisely why the debate must be more sophisticated than simply calling every such statute “illegal.”

The real issue is:

How far may the State go in regulating the exercise of conscience before regulation itself begins to undermine religious liberty?

And Then Comes the Question of Christians

This is where the issue becomes particularly painful for India's Christian community.

If Christianity is a legally recognised religion in India...

If Christians are equal citizens...

If the Constitution guarantees freedom of conscience...

If Article 25 protects the right to profess, practise and propagate religion...

If adults have the freedom to make deeply personal decisions about their lives...

Why are Christians so frequently portrayed as people who must be watched whenever religion is discussed?

Why are pastors, evangelists, missionaries and ordinary Christian believers sometimes accused of “conversion” merely for conducting prayer, distributing religious literature or speaking about their faith?

Why should a Christian charitable activity automatically generate suspicion?

Why should an adult who freely embraces Christianity be treated as though he or she must have been deceived?

And most importantly:

Why should the voluntary decision of a fellow Indian to follow Lord Jesus Christ be considered a threat to society?

These are not merely questions for Christians.

They are questions for every Indian who believes in the Constitution.

Freedom Must Not Become Selective

A democracy cannot operate on the principle:

“Your freedom is protected as long as you remain within the religion into which you were born.”

That would not be genuine freedom of conscience.

That would be freedom by birth certificate.

A secular democracy must allow a person to remain in the religion of his or her parents.

It must also allow a person to leave that religion.

It must allow a person to embrace another religion.

And it must allow another person to reject religion altogether.

Otherwise, the word “conscience” in Article 25 becomes almost meaningless.

What About Drinking and Smoking?

There is an important qualification here.

Adults may legally consume alcohol or tobacco where state law permits it and subject to age and other restrictions. But drinking alcohol or smoking cigarettes is not itself a fundamental constitutional right in the same sense as freedom of conscience.

This distinction matters.

We should not weaken the constitutional argument by claiming that every personal choice is a fundamental right.

The stronger argument is that certain freedoms—particularly conscience, expression, privacy, dignity, association and personal autonomy—receive constitutional protection.

Religion belongs directly within that constitutional framework.

Secularism Must Protect the Minority—and the Majority

There is another important point.

Defending religious freedom does not mean attacking Hinduism.

India's constitutional secularism does not require hostility toward Hindu religious traditions.

Hindus must have the freedom to practise Hinduism.

Christians must have the freedom to practise Christianity.

Muslims must have the freedom to practise Islam.

Sikhs must have the freedom to practise Sikhism.

Jains, Buddhists and members of other faiths must have the same freedom.

And atheists must have the freedom not to believe.

The Constitution does not ask citizens to agree about God. It asks the State to treat citizens equally despite their beliefs.

The Dangerous Road of Religious Suspicion

The greatest danger is not merely one particular Act or one particular government.

The greater danger is a political culture in which a citizen's religion becomes a matter of governmental suspicion.

Today the question may be:

“Why did this Hindu become a Christian?”

Tomorrow another government could ask:

“Why did this Christian become a Hindu?”

Another could ask:

“Why did this Muslim become an atheist?”

If the State acquires excessive power over the conscience of citizens, no religious community can permanently assume that it will always be the beneficiary of that power.

Governments change.

Political parties change.

Majorities change.

Minorities change.

But the Constitution remains.

The Constitution Must Be Bigger Than Politics

Political parties will come and go.

Governments will come and go.

Chief ministers will come and go.

But India's Constitution is supposed to protect the citizen from the arbitrary power of the State.

That is why Article 25 does not say:

“Hindus shall have freedom of religion.”

It says:

“All persons are equally entitled to freedom of conscience.”

Those words are extraordinarily important.

All persons.

Not Hindus alone.

Not Christians alone.

Not Muslims alone.

Not the majority alone.

Not minorities alone.

All persons.

So, Why Are Christians Being Persecuted?

The answer cannot simply be that every prosecution under an anti-conversion law is persecution. Some allegations may involve genuine criminal conduct, and legitimate crimes must be investigated regardless of religion.

But neither should the opposite extreme be accepted: that every accusation of unlawful conversion automatically proves that Christianity or Christian activity is criminal.

Where Christians are attacked, threatened, arrested without proper basis, prevented from peacefully worshipping, or harassed merely because of their faith, those incidents deserve investigation and condemnation.

Religious liberty must protect the Christian who wants to remain Christian, the person who freely becomes Christian, and the person who chooses another faith.

The constitutional principle is beautifully simple:

The State may regulate criminal conduct.

The State may punish force and fraud.

The State may maintain public order.

But the State must not become the master of a citizen's conscience.

One Final Question for Every Indian

Imagine that tomorrow a government tells you:

You may believe what you want—but before changing your belief, you must explain yourself to the government.

Would you still call that complete freedom of conscience?

Now imagine that the government tells your neighbour:

You may practise your religion—but your religious activity will be viewed with suspicion if someone might potentially be influenced by it.

Would you still call that complete religious freedom?

And finally, imagine that your fellow citizen freely tells you:

“I have found my faith in Lord Jesus Christ.”

Should the Constitution protect that citizen—or should the State decide whether that personal conviction is acceptable?

India's answer to these questions will reveal whether secularism is merely a word in the Preamble—or a living constitutional promise.

The real test of religious freedom is not whether the majority is allowed to practise its religion.

The real test is whether the individual is free to follow his or her conscience—even when that choice is unpopular, unfamiliar or belongs to a minority.

That is the promise of constitutional India.

And that promise must belong to every Indian.

Why Robert Clements' powerful message is particularly relevant to Christians in India today

There are moments when an article appears at precisely the right time.

Robert Clements' latest “Bob's Banter” column, titled “The God They Cannot Contain..!”, is one such article. Published on August 29, 2026, it asks a simple but profound question:

Why should anybody be frightened of Christians?

Clements points out that Christians constitute only a small percentage of India's population and do not possess the political or numerical strength to dominate elections. Yet, he says, perhaps those who fear Christians are not really frightened of the Christians themselves.

They are frightened of an uncontainable Christ. (Bobs Banter)

That thought provides the central theme of Clements' reflection—and it deserves particular attention at a time when Christians in several parts of India are facing increasing allegations of harassment, disruption of worship, criminal complaints and attacks on churches and prayer gatherings.

Why are Christians being treated as a threat?

Christianity does not command armies.

Christians do not have a political majority.

Most Christian institutions are engaged in education, healthcare, social service, care for the elderly, assistance to the poor and other works of charity.

So why should a small religious minority cause such anxiety?

That is the question at the heart of Robert Clements' article.

The answer he suggests is deeply spiritual: the real concern is not the strength of Christians but the enduring power of Jesus Christ.

The Gospel has survived emperors, dictators, persecution and attempts to silence it. Christ was crucified, His tomb was sealed and guards were placed around it.

And yet the stone was rolled away.

A disturbing reality that cannot be ignored

While Clements' message is primarily spiritual, it is difficult to read his article without considering the present circumstances facing Christians in different parts of India.

Reports from Christian organisations and other observers have documented hundreds of incidents involving violence, intimidation, disruption of worship, arrests, threats and discrimination against Christians.

The Evangelical Fellowship of India's Religious Liberty Commission reported 747 incidents affecting Christian communities across India during 2025, based on reports that it says were corroborated through multiple independent sources. (EFI Online)

Another EFIRLC report covering January–July 2025 documented 334 incidents across 22 states and Union Territories, including threats and harassment, alleged false accusations and arrests, physical violence and disruption of worship services. (EFI Online)

These figures should not simply be dismissed as political propaganda. Nor should every individual allegation automatically be accepted as proven. Each case deserves proper investigation and due process.

But the pattern itself deserves attention.

When prayer gatherings become “conversion” cases

One of the recurring concerns raised by Christians is the manner in which accusations of forced or fraudulent conversion can arise around ordinary Christian activities.

A prayer meeting is interrupted.

A group of people arrives alleging that conversions are taking place.

The police are called.

Christians are questioned or detained.

An FIR may follow under an anti-conversion law.

And sometimes the accused then have to spend years proving that what they were doing was simply praying, worshipping or engaging in legitimate Christian activity.

This is precisely where a serious constitutional question arises.

Protection against forced, fraudulent or coercive conversion is legitimate. But protection against unlawful conversion cannot become a mechanism for restricting a person's freedom of conscience or peaceful religious activity.

The Supreme Court has made this distinction particularly significant. In a 2025 judgment concerning the Uttar Pradesh conversion law, the Court held that allowing unrelated third parties to initiate criminal proceedings could intrude upon the constitutionally protected freedom to profess, practise and propagate religion and the liberty to embrace or renounce a faith of one's choice. The Court specifically warned against opening the door to frivolous or motivated litigation and misuse of criminal process. (Indian Kanoon)

That observation deserves to be remembered whenever allegations of conversion are used to target Christians.

The Maharashtra and Goa developments

The issue has become particularly relevant with recent developments in Maharashtra and Goa.

Maharashtra has moved ahead with its new freedom-of-religion legislation. The manner in which such laws are implemented matters enormously because even a law ostensibly intended to prevent coercion or fraud can have serious consequences if its provisions are interpreted or enforced excessively.

Indeed, there has already been an embarrassing example of the danger of premature enforcement: Pune police invoked the Maharashtra Freedom of Religion Act, 2026 against individuals before the law had officially come into force, with senior officers subsequently acknowledging the error. The episode should make everyone—Christians, Hindus and members of every other faith—pause and ask whether laws dealing with something as intimate as religious conscience are being implemented with sufficient caution.

And then came Goa

Goa provides an especially interesting contrast.

The Goa Cabinet approved an anti-conversion Bill in August 2026. Yet, when the Bill was about to be introduced in the Assembly, it faced opposition even from legislators belonging to the ruling BJP. The government subsequently decided not to introduce it during the current session. (The Indian Express)

BJP MLA Michael Lobo reportedly questioned the haste with which the legislation had been approved and called for greater examination and consultation. (The Goan)

This is significant.

The debate over anti-conversion legislation is therefore not simply Christians versus BJP.

Even within the ruling political establishment, questions are being raised about whether such laws are necessary, whether adequate evidence supports them and whether they could have unintended consequences for Goa's social and religious harmony.

When mobs become the investigators, judges and enforcers

Perhaps even more disturbing than legislation itself is what happens when private groups begin behaving as though they have the authority to determine who may worship and where.

Christian communities have reported incidents in which prayer gatherings were disrupted, pastors were assaulted, churches were vandalised and Christians were accused of conversion without due process.

Recent reporting from West Bengal, for example, described attacks on Christian prayer gatherings and churches, including an incident in which a mob entered a house during Sunday prayer and another in which an under-construction church was vandalised. (The Indian Express)

Such incidents raise a fundamental question:

Who gave a mob the authority to decide what constitutes legitimate religious activity?

If someone genuinely believes that a crime has been committed, the proper course is to approach the police and allow the law to take its course.

It is not the role of a mob to enter a church.

It is not the role of vigilantes to interrogate worshippers.

It is not the role of political activists to decide who may preach the Gospel.

And it certainly cannot be acceptable for anyone to vandalise a church, attack a Christian family or threaten worshippers simply because they disagree with Christianity.

The most dangerous thing is impunity

Perhaps the greatest danger is not merely the attack itself.

It is the perception that nothing will happen to those who commit it.

When attackers believe that their political connections, ideological affiliations or proximity to those in power will protect them from consequences, the rule of law itself is weakened.

This concern has appeared repeatedly in reports documenting attacks on Christians. One 2025 report, for example, described incidents in which Christian victims were arrested or charged while alleged attackers escaped corresponding action. (EFI Online)

Such allegations must be investigated individually and impartially.

But if the state wishes to maintain the confidence of minorities, the law must be seen to protect the victim as vigorously as it protects the accused.

A Christian should be able to attend Sunday worship without fear.

A pastor should be able to conduct a prayer meeting without expecting a mob to arrive.

A priest or nun should be able to serve the poor without being branded a criminal.

A Christian family should be able to pray inside its own home without fearing that someone will burst in and accuse them of conversion.

That is not a special privilege for Christians.

That is the minimum expectation of constitutional religious freedom.

And this is where Robert Clements' message becomes powerful

Robert Clements does not call Christians to hatred.

He does not ask Christians to retaliate.

He does not tell Christians to take up arms.

His message is exactly the opposite.

Do not be afraid.

He reminds Christians that Jesus never forced anyone to follow Him. At the same time, Christ commanded His disciples to proclaim the Gospel.

That is the balance Christians need today:

Respect the law—but do not abandon the Gospel.

Reject coercion—but do not be frightened into silence.

Oppose injustice—but do so peacefully.

Forgive those who attack you—but do not surrender the truth.

Serve the poor, educate children, care for the sick and reach out to the abandoned—but do not be ashamed of the name of Jesus.

That is the Christian response.

They could not contain Him then. They cannot contain Him now. Jesus Christ is Almighty God.

Herod tried to destroy Jesus when He was an infant.

Religious authorities tried to silence Him.

Pilate handed Him over to be crucified.

The Roman Empire nailed Him to a cross.

His tomb was sealed.

And yet Lord Jesus rose again.

The early Christians were persecuted.

The apostles were imprisoned.

Peter and John were ordered to stop speaking about Jesus.

Their answer remains relevant:

“We cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.”

The Christian Church has survived every empire that attempted to destroy it.

Kings have disappeared.

Dictators have disappeared.

Empires have collapsed.

Regimes have changed.

But Christ Jesus remains.

And this is precisely why the title of Robert Clements' article is so profound:

The God They Cannot Contain..!

No law can erase Jesus from the hearts of those who love Him.

No mob can destroy the Gospel by vandalising a church.

No false accusation can make Christ disappear.

No government can imprison God.

And no political ideology can ultimately contain the message of the Gospel.

The Christian response, therefore, must not be fear.

It must be faith.

It must be courage.

It must be peaceful witness.

And above all, it must be Christ-like love.

For when Christians continue to forgive their persecutors, serve their neighbours, educate children, care for the sick, feed the hungry and reach out to the abandoned—even when they are hated for doing so—the question will inevitably arise:

“Why do they continue to do this?”

And the answer will be one name:

Jesus.

The name above every name.

The name no law can erase.

The God nobody has ever been able to contain.

Challenges of Caste Discrimination and Dalit Struggle in Contemporary India

He argues that prolonged delays and inadequate enforcement can discourage victims while creating a sense of impunity among perpetrators.

The address also highlights the historical contribution of Christian missionaries and Christian institutions to education, healthcare and social advancement among marginalized communities. According to the speaker, missionary education and social work challenged caste barriers by affirming the equal dignity of human beings and opening educational and social opportunities to Dalits, Adivasis, poor communities and others who had historically faced exclusion.

Ultimately, the speech is a call for social awakening and collective action. Adv. Pallivathukkal argues that Dalits, Adivasis and other marginalized communities must become more united and conscious of their constitutional rights. On August 13, 2026, Mallikarjun Kharge, the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and President of the Congress party in democratic India, was really shaken up.

A few days earlier, on August 8, 2026, at a public event at the Ramlila Ground in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, he said that his presence had somehow dirtied the stage and the whole place. In response, two days later, on August 10, members of Shri Ram Sena held a cleansing ceremony with Ganga water and conducted a fire ritual.

"Speaking as a Dalit myself and as someone who has experienced the reality of caste discrimination in India, I say that most of the Dalit community has been humiliated by this. This is straight-up discrimination. It goes against the Constitution."

Article 15 of the Indian Constitution prohibits discrimination on grounds including religion, race, caste, sex and place of birth. On top of that, Article 17 completely abolishes untouchability. The Protection of Civil Rights Act of 1955 and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act of 1989 are also active laws.

In our great Indian nation, which is a democracy, it is truly disgraceful that Mallikarjun Kharge, the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and President of the Congress, has been insulted and subjected to caste-based abuse. This is a shameful thing for the entire country.

The economic sector has been badly affected, unemployment has increased, entrance examinations have been plagued by controversies, and farmers have been neglected. Indian youth fighting for justice have been beaten and left on the streets. Meanwhile, corruption and cover-ups continue as those in power hold on to their rule, even affecting education.

The Shri Ram Sena has, in my view, added another feather to the cap of a government that is working with the unspoken goal of destroying democratic traditions, selling out the country and turning India into a Hindu Rashtra.

Let us look at Mallikarjun Kharge, one of the prominent Dalit leaders India has produced. He has now become a victim of this controversy involving Shri Ram Sena.

Born in 1942 into a Dalit family in Warawatti, Bidar district, Karnataka, he experienced hardship from an early age. He fought against social systems, oppression and caste discrimination in order to achieve progress.

From 1972, he served as a member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. He held ministerial positions, including State Home Minister, became a Member of Parliament in 2009 and served as Railway Minister in the second UPA government. He protested and raised his voice for various causes.

As the 61st President of the Indian National Congress and currently the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, even he is not safe from caste-based humiliation.

India is still torn apart by caste-based communalism. Dominant caste groups continue to refuse to accept Dalits and other marginalized communities as equals.

Various extremist groups are spreading communal poison mixed with casteism across India.

What Constitution or Hindu law justifies this?

Recently, leaders of Shri Ram Sena have reportedly told the media that anyone who does not support Hindu extremism is anti-Hindu.

But humanity and equality are the greatest religions in the world.

Who taught these hateful groups that hatred is superior to humanity?

They are the ones tearing down the Constitution, justice, freedom, equality and fraternity, all based on a rigid caste system.

When caste became deeply embedded in the social system, oppressed Dalit, Adivasi and other marginalized communities were pushed to the very bottom and treated as untouchable by so-called upper classes.

This is a mental sickness affecting society—a deadly disease that needs urgent treatment. Only by addressing this can we make progress.

Through social boycotts, physical attacks, denial of education and deprivation of rights, these oppressed groups have suffered endlessly.

If at any point they unite and decide to fight peacefully and constitutionally for their human rights, no force in this country can stop them.

It is a fact today that a small elite and economically powerful section exercises enormous influence over political and economic resources.

What action has been taken so far against those who openly violate the Constitution?

Even though they have blatantly stripped the Indian Constitution of its spirit, our rulers remain blind to it and continue to remain silent.

This still goes on and, according to the political ideology I am criticizing, will continue because it is connected to the survival of Hindutva.

To keep such a system going, social subordination is essential.

If slavery is to continue, then the caste system must continue.

Shri Mallikarjun Kharge raised his voice in Parliament not simply because he personally felt hurt, but because the Dalit community to which he belongs continues to face discrimination and violence.

In December 2025, in Udaypur, Raisen district, Madhya Pradesh, a man named Bharat Raj went to eat at a Dalit's house.

His family was a non-Dalit family. But the panchayat branded the family as social outcasts and announced it openly.

According to the reported verdict, eating food at a Valmiki or Dalit family's house was considered a sin.

At that time, none of us said a word.

In September 2025, near a Dalit community settlement in Thiruvarur, Tamil Nadu, caste-based walls were reportedly constructed around Dalit houses as part of a housing development.

The world watched in shock when people were segregated in this manner, but even then, we did not say a word.

On June 17, 2026, Prashant Solanki, a Dalit youth who had come for a wedding in Kuthirappuram, was reportedly beaten by members of a dominant caste group.

Still, we remained silent.

When someone claimed that at a temple event a lower-caste person had placed his foot over the foot of an upper-caste elder—a gesture they called "cross-legged sitting"—a Dalit youth was reportedly beaten to death in southern Tamil Nadu.

Again, all of us kept quiet.

In the west, in a village in Maharashtra, when three Dalit milkmen were reportedly caught bathing in a well used by dominant castes, they were stripped, beaten and paraded naked.

And we said nothing.

In Gujarat, a 13-year-old Dalit boy named Mahesh, accused of putting a shoe in a letterbox, was subjected to unimaginable abuse.

And we remained silent then too.

So why now, when Maulik Yadav added "Sinh", a title associated with an upper caste, next to his name on Facebook, do we react differently?

Even when the young man was brutally attacked, none of us said a word.

We were all silently suffering, our hearts shattered by what we saw and heard, realizing that there was no safety even for ourselves.

It was at this breaking point that, in India's Parliament, facing rulers whom he believed were appeasing this barbaric mentality, Mallikarjun Kharge boldly expressed the unbearable pain that he and his community had experienced.

He was speaking of the endless oppression and injustice forced upon Dalits.

Even the wells, public places and facilities in our own land and villages have been affected by caste discrimination.

Even after nearly 80 years of independence, this country still has millions of children who do not have adequate access to schools, teachers or food.

Dalits and other oppressed communities continue to face the same old mindset.

Over the past 10 to 12 years, governance has not, in my view, produced sufficient improvement in this situation. Instead, frustration and tension have increased.

There are many reasons for this, but two of the main reasons are the dominance of privileged groups in administrative and political power and the failure of the judicial system to act effectively.

Based on the Crime Records Bureau reports, the Honourable Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Shri Ramdas Athawale, gave a written reply in the Rajya Sabha to a question by MP Shri Sanjay Singh.

The figures are shocking.

In India, a very large proportion of cases relating to untouchability remain pending.

Under the Protection of Civil Rights Act of 1955, hundreds of cases remain pending before the courts.

What more can be said?

Looking at cases registered under the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act of 1989, we also see a disturbing situation.

Thousands of cases are registered every year, while large numbers remain pending for years.

The real question is not merely how many cases are registered.

The real question is: How many victims actually receive justice?

Do you know how many SC/ST cases are pending in various courts across India?

There are tens of thousands of cases pending.

So where and how can an ordinary person obtain justice?

How can we prevent disrespect, harassment and discrimination?

The courts of justice need to wake up.

They must wake up from their deep slumber and their state of inaction.

And thirdly, the most important thing is the decline of Christian missionary activities in today's India.

The role Christian missionaries played in shaping India is something words cannot fully explain.

They taught people to see each other as human beings.

They taught that everyone is a child of God.

They provided education and healthcare without making caste the basis of human worth.

They taught people to live together and share the same space in unity.

They lifted the poor, tribals and Dalits through education and social advancement, opening opportunities for communities that had historically been excluded.

They challenged deep-rooted divisions, injustices and superstitions that had existed in this land.

They bravely fought against them, and their contribution became part of the making of modern India.

Christian institutions continue to provide education, healthcare and social services to millions of people.

The importance of this contribution should not be forgotten.

The real reason behind the constant attacks by right-wing groups and radical Hindutva extremists on missionaries and Christian educational institutions in India, in my view, is fear.

They are afraid of the progress that Dalits, Adivasis, backward communities and marginalized people are making in villages across the country through education and social development.

They know that such progress challenges the caste system.

And if the caste system is challenged, many traditional structures of privilege and domination will also be challenged.

That is why Christian and Dalit communities continue to face opposition.

No one can argue that democratic India should not confront this issue in a truly democratic manner.

The removal of untouchability is not optional.

It is a constitutional obligation.

Nobody should ever be allowed to say that a human being is inferior because of his or her caste.

Nobody should ever be allowed to say that a Dalit has polluted a place merely by being present there.

We must not allow it.

India must not allow the Constitution to remain merely a document.

Equality must become a lived reality.

Untouchability must disappear—not only from the law, but from the minds and hearts of society.

Spain's Supreme Court Got It Wrong on Sea Arrivals – What Ceuta Reveals

The recent migration crisis in Ceuta should serve as a warning not only to Spain but to all of Europe. While humanitarian values and the rule of law must always be respected, judicial decisions should also take into account their real-world consequences. In this case, Spain's Supreme Court appears to have underestimated how its ruling would be interpreted by migrants, human traffickers, and foreign actors seeking to exploit Europe's borders.

In July 2026, the Spanish Supreme Court ruled that migrants intercepted at sea while attempting to swim into Ceuta or Melilla could not be subjected to the "summary return" procedure ("devoluciones en caliente") that had previously been used for certain land-border crossings. Instead, authorities would have to follow the ordinary legal procedures established under Spain's immigration laws. The Court did not legalize illegal immigration, grant asylum automatically, or give migrants the right to remain in Spain. Unfortunately, legal nuance is often lost in the real world.

Within weeks, misinformation spread rapidly across social media in Morocco and elsewhere, claiming that Spain had effectively opened the door to anyone who could reach Ceuta by sea. Human trafficking networks reportedly exploited this misunderstanding, encouraging thousands to risk their lives by attempting dangerous crossings. The result was chaos: tens of thousands of people entered Ceuta within a short period, overwhelming local authorities and creating a humanitarian and security crisis. Dozens of people tragically lost their lives during the events. (AP News)

Whether the Court intended it or not, its decision weakened an important deterrent against irregular migration. Laws do not exist in a vacuum. Judges may focus on legal interpretation, but governments and courts alike must recognize that their decisions can have immediate practical consequences, especially in areas as sensitive as border security.

A nation's borders are not merely administrative lines on a map. They are essential to national sovereignty, public order, and the safety of citizens. Every country has both the right and the responsibility to control who enters its territory. This principle is recognized under international law even while countries remain bound by obligations toward refugees and asylum seekers.

The Ceuta crisis also exposed how quickly organized criminal networks can exploit legal changes. Smugglers need only convince desperate people that a border has become easier to cross. Even if the legal reality is far more limited, the perception alone can trigger mass migration events with devastating consequences. Reports suggest that false claims circulating online played a significant role in encouraging the crossings. (AP News)

The burden of such crises falls not only on Spain but on the entire European Union. Border communities face immense pressure on housing, healthcare, policing, and public services. Citizens naturally become concerned about security, integration, and the long-term sustainability of migration policies. These concerns should not be dismissed as xenophobia or intolerance. They are legitimate questions that democratic governments must address responsibly.

None of this means that migrants should be treated without dignity or compassion. Many who attempt these dangerous journeys are fleeing poverty, conflict, or hopelessness. Their humanity should never be forgotten. But compassion must be accompanied by orderly and enforceable immigration policies. A legal system that unintentionally encourages dangerous crossings ultimately puts more lives at risk.

The Ceuta episode should prompt Spain to review whether its current legal framework adequately balances due process with effective border enforcement. If existing legislation creates loopholes that undermine border security, Parliament—not the courts alone—should act swiftly to clarify the law while continuing to respect Spain's constitutional and international obligations.

Europe has long stood as a symbol of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. Those values remain worth defending. But they cannot survive without secure borders and public confidence in the immigration system. Humanitarian principles and national security are not mutually exclusive; they must coexist.

The events in Ceuta remind us that good intentions do not always produce good outcomes. Decisions made in courtrooms can have consequences far beyond legal theory. When judicial rulings inadvertently create incentives for dangerous mass migration or are easily misrepresented by traffickers and misinformation campaigns, it is appropriate to ask whether the broader public interest has been adequately considered.

Spain's Supreme Court may have sought to uphold legal safeguards. However, the events that followed demonstrate why judicial decisions affecting border policy should carefully consider not only legal doctrine but also their foreseeable practical consequences. The cost of getting that balance wrong is measured not only in political controversy, but also in human lives, strained public institutions, and diminished confidence in the rule of law.

This version is suitable for publication because it accurately states that the ruling required ordinary legal procedures rather than "allowing illegal migrants," while clearly presenting the criticism as opinion supported by the subsequent events.

India's Youth Deserve Justice, Not Silence: Time for Accountability in Public Examinations

For millions of young Indians, competitive examinations such as NEET are not merely tests—they represent years of sacrifice, sleepless nights, financial hardship, and dreams of a better future. Every examination conducted by the Government carries a sacred responsibility to be transparent, fair, and beyond suspicion.

Unfortunately, over the past several years, allegations of question paper leaks and irregularities in several national-level examinations, including NEET and other Central recruitment examinations, have repeatedly shaken public confidence. Court proceedings, investigations, arrests, and media reports have exposed serious weaknesses in the system and have raised uncomfortable questions about the integrity of examination processes.

Whether every allegation is ultimately proved in court is for the judiciary to decide. However, one undeniable fact remains: public trust in the examination system has suffered enormous damage.

Growing Questions About Accountability

Many students, educators, and civil society groups believe that repeated examination failures cannot simply be dismissed as isolated incidents. They argue that such recurring controversies indicate deep structural failures within the agencies responsible for conducting these examinations.

Critics have questioned why, despite repeated controversies, stronger political accountability has not been fixed. They have demanded that those responsible for overseeing the examination system, including senior officials and policymakers, accept responsibility for restoring public confidence.

Among the primary demands raised by several protest groups has been the resignation or removal of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Supporters of this demand argue that ministerial accountability is an essential principle of parliamentary democracy whenever serious administrative failures repeatedly occur.

The Union Government, however, has rejected calls for the Minister's resignation and has maintained that necessary reforms and investigations are being undertaken.

A Youth-Led Movement Gains Momentum

What began as the frustration of students gradually evolved into a wider public movement. Young people, mobilized through social media platforms, formed citizen groups (and a party named Cockroach Janta Party) to demand greater transparency and accountability in the examination system.

As the protests continued, various social activists and political organizations extended their support, transforming what was initially a student issue into a broader national debate about governance, transparency, and democratic accountability.

The participation of noted activist Sonam Wangchuk through an indefinite hunger strike further drew national attention to the concerns raised by students and protesters.

Police Action Raises Serious Concerns

The movement reached another significant stage when opposition political leaders and Members of Parliament joined peaceful demonstrations in Delhi.

Images and videos circulating widely showed police using force to disperse protesters. Voter rolls were pruned, electoral codes enforced, and political interference curbed. Those were years when the Commission was seen not as a rubber stamp, but as democracy’s gatekeeper.

Until recently, the salary of the Chief Election Commissioner matched that of the Chief Justice of India (CJI)—a symbolic gesture affirming parity and safeguarding independence. Churches have been attacked, prayer meetings disrupted, and Catholic Priests, Nuns and Christian Pastors and believers falsely accused of “forced conversions” under draconian anti-conversion laws.

Rights groups and independent reports highlight that these acts are often carried out by extremist hindutva groups emboldened by political patronage and a climate of impunity. Victims, instead of receiving protection, frequently face harassment from police and other authorities. This growing hostility not only violates the constitutional right to freedom of religion but also undermines India’s democratic and pluralistic traditions.

Though small in number, the contribution of the Christian community to the all-round development of the country is immense—particularly in the social, educational, and medical fields. The fanatics in the northern states may not be aware (as they are mostly illitrate) that the Christians have always exhibited patriotism and deep love for the nation. Many regressive practices such as untouchability, sati, caste discrimination, human sacrifices, and even the denial of the right to wear clothes by the backward castes were challenged and abolished largely due to the influence and intervention of Christian missionaries. Many Indian languages owe their written scripts to missionaries—often foreign missionaries—who worked tirelessly to promote literacy and education.

The Bishop of the Shamshabad Catholic Diocese, Mar Prince Anthony Panengadan, recently released an open letter to the Indian authorities titled “We are Indians, We are Christians”—a heartfelt reminder of the community’s rightful place in the nation on the eve of the 78th Independence Day Celebrations.

The recent Parliament elections in Kerala resulted in a significant triumph for the United Democratic Front (UDF), which secured 18 out of 20 seats. 1 seat was won by BJP candidate Suresh Gopi in Thrissur and just 1 seat only was won by an LDF candidate. As the saying goes, "success has many fathers, but failure is an orphan" there are many claiming credit for the results! In fact the main person who helped the landslide victory for UDF is none other than than Pinarayi Vijayan, the chief minister of kerala and his CPI(M) party only. Yes, the overwhelming victory of UDF in Kerala was primarily a resounding rejection mainly of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's Left Democratic Front (LDF) government in Kerala and Modi's dictator rule in the centre.
