7 Lines Pastors Do Not Want To Cross

Too often I read online about another pastor who have been exposed and caught up in an illicit sexual encounter. That pastor didn't wake up one day and out of the blue say to themselves, "I am going to engage in this sexual encounter.". Most often, it was a subtle slide comprised of small and compromising choices along the way. That is why it is important to be vigilant with the small choices made today, because they will impact the decisions you make in the future. With that in mind, here are 7 lines pastors do not want to cross.

1) Do not use cologne (or use it sparingly). This may seem silly, but women are sensitive to fragrances, my wife says, which is why they wear them in the first place. When a man wears them, he may send out a subtle signal, the type no wise minister needs to be emitting.

2) Do not hug women. One pastor said he hugs no one between the ages of 6 and 66. To the minister who argues that “Well, I am a toucher and people need to be hugged,” I reply: a) Granted, but let women hug women and men hug men, if necessary and appropriate. b) In most cases, your “touching” indicates some physical or emotional need in yourself, and is not what healthy ministers do.

Even if your intentions are pure, you make yourself vulnerable to charges of inappropriate touching. And–do not miss this–in the minds of many, to be charged is to be convicted. Best to guard against these dangers.

3) Do not be in your office with a woman alone. A pastor of a large church told some of us why he does not counsel in his office. “All she has to do is run out of the office screaming and your ministry is over.” When someone catches him following a worship service with “Pastor, could I come by and talk with you about a problem?” he answers, “Let’s sit in a pew right over here and talk now!” Their visit is in public, but far enough removed from people so that no one hears their conversation.

4) Do not be in the church alone with a woman. This is more difficult for small churches that have no one on staff but the pastor. In my first post-seminary church, the secretary worked half-days. Often she and I were in the building alone all morning. In those cases, you do the best you can at keeping your distance, making sure the doors are unlocked and drop-ins are welcome, and when possible, have others in the office too.

A pastor I used to serve with would sometimes ask me to remain after hours because he was counseling a woman, and wanted to make sure someone else was in the building.

5) Do not make pastoral visits alone. If you knock on a door and find that a woman is home alone, do not go inside but visit briefly at the door. Many pastors take a deacon or their wife with them on such calls.

6) Do not compliment a young woman on her appearance. My wife says with women middle-aged and older, you can say, “You’re looking nice today.” But do not compliment a woman on her dress, her figure, tell her that her diet’s really working, and such. You are stepping over an invisible line.

7) Do not fantasize about women. Most sins of a sexual nature had their beginnings long before as the individual imagined certain situations with some individual. Then, when the opportunity presented itself, he was ready since he had been over that ground a hundred times before.

Porn Allows Men To Avoid Real Relationships

Porn allows men to avoid contact and relationship with REAL women and in the process it stunts MEN's emotional and spiritual growth.

God calls men to be in REAL relationships with REAL women, not because he is so concerned with us being happy - rather relationships becomes a means to which God sanctifies us. God molds and makes us more and more into the image of Jesus when we have to learn through relationships how to love by faith, forgive, and serve others.

Yes, most men look at porn. In this sense your husband is normal. But the real question is whether men should look at porn. Most men and women also lie on their online dating profiles in one way or another. Does that make it okay?

2. Pornography is a celebration of the human body.
Some women watch pornography with their husbands or enjoy it themselves. But more and more women talking about how over time this is damaging their marriage.

Sex is a celebration of the human body; pornography is not. Pornography celebrates commercialized sex: it is prostitution on film (if, in fact, the actors were compensated for their sex acts).

In the top-selling pornographic films, 88% of scenes contain acts of physical aggression (like spanking, gagging, or slapping), and 49% of scenes contain verbal aggression (like calling someone a derogatory name). Companies that produce and distribute these films promote increasingly hardcore material, not only depicting sex acts devoid of affection, but blurring definitions of consent, youth, pain, and violence. This is hardly a kind of sexuality worth celebrating.

3. At least he’s not coming to me to get all his needs met.
You might feel like your husband’s sexual desires are stronger or more frequent than your own. What’s the harm in a little porn to relieve the urge?

You may not want him to simply pester you for sex every time he wants it, but his use of porn is indicative of his whole attitude toward sex. What if he didn’t see sex as merely “getting off” or relieving a bodily urge, but as an opportunity to get close and show affection?

But what kind of marriage do you want to have? What if the energy your husband puts into porn was channeled in the direction of romancing you? What if the time he spends seeking out digital women were spent seeking out ways to build and enhance your relationship?

And where does it end? What is to stop your husband from being conditioned more and more by pornography if it is how he is training his brain to be turned on? Many clinicians and counselors tells stories of women who are now lamenting the loss of their sex lives because their husbands prefer porn to real sex.

4. I don’t like it, but at least he’s honest with me about it.
Of course it is better for your husband to be honest rather than dishonest. Many men hide their love affair with porn from their wives.

But what is worse? Hiding his porn from you because he suspects you would disapprove, or unashamedly looking at porn because he feels your opinion about this is insignificant? In the latter case, he is not only filling his imagination with images of seductive women, he’s also treating your opinion as worthless.

5. If I push back about my husband’s porn, I might lose him.
Okay, this excuse isn't “lame.” It is rather serious. You are right to want to keep your marriage together. It is good to fight to make your marriage thrive.

But if his porn use disturbs you, I encourage you not to settle for other digital women sharing your bed.

Twitter is gaining popularity among teens, and it's different from other social networks in a lot of significant ways. If Facebook is like an after-school hangout, then Twitter is like scanning all of their favorite newspapers and magazines – as well as picking up the latest school gossip. Here are 9 things parents should know about teenage Twitter use.

There is no minimum age to sign up for Twitter.
Unlike most social networks that require users to be at least 13, even though they have no real way to enforce that requirement, kids of any age can sign up for Twitter.

Following is a one-way relationship.
Having Twitter followers is more like having fans than Facebook friends. People can follow your teen even if your teen isn't following them – or doesn't even know who they are.

Tweets spread like wildfire.
If a user sees a tweet of interest, Twitter encourages “re-tweeting” it. Tweets can, and often do, go far beyond your teen's original group of followers.

Once posted, tweets can't be edited.
Your teen can delete one of her tweets, but she can't change it. And deleting doesn't automatically delete all of the re-tweets that have already been made.

Tweets can include images and videos.
Don't be lulled into security by the 140-character limit of a tweet – tweets can also include links, photos, and videos.

It's possible to stamp tweets with your location.
Obviously this could be a serious Internet safety risk for teens tweeting from home, school, or a friend's house. Luckily this feature is off by default.

Tweets are public by default.
Even people without Twitter accounts can read your teen's tweets unless he manually change his account to 'protected.' His tweets are then shared only with a list of approved followers.

Teens can talk privately with their followers.
Sending out mass updates via tweet isn't the only way to communicate on Twitter. Your teen can send a follower a direct message that is invisible to everyone on Twitter except for the two of them.

Twitter uses a special language.
If you've been using parental monitoring for your teen's Twitter account and found that you're having trouble understanding the tweets, it will help to know that “@ username” signifies a response to a certain person, and the hashtag symbol “#” denotes a key word describing the content of the tweet.

And if you look at your teen's account and don't see a lot of tweets in their name, don't worry that they're somehow blocking you. It's actually pretty common for kids to sign up to follow celebrities and so on – but not to author a lot of tweets themselves.

Pornography At Work Harms Companies

Each morning, Bill walked into his office, sat down at his computer and began Internet searches that lasted for hours.

The first few days of his new job were fine, and his searching was all work related, but the more time he spent online, the more intoxicating the office's unfiltered web access became. "I was pretty unfettered," said Bill, a recovering pornography and sex addict. "The nature of the illness … I became more reckless, more brazen in my usage." He thought he was hiding his tracks well enough, but it wasn't long before several colleagues complained to their supervisor about images they'd seen on Bill's computer.

He was put on probation and the IT department immediately began monitoring his Internet use.

"If I were to try to go to questionable sites now, there's a block prompt that comes up," he told the Deseret News, which is using only his first name for privacy reasons. "Any time you try to penetrate that, it signals to someone in IT. So I have a system in place there to help monitor me, to help me feel safe."

That was six years ago, when Bill's computer was connected to the wall, and his phone only made calls. The blocking software and his own personal rules have kept him out of trouble since then, but he knows the problems for others are only increasing.

With the explosion of smartphones, tablets, iPods and iPads, a growing number of employees find they can't stay away from salacious sites and images, pulling up X-rated pages on their lunch hour, bathroom breaks and even in the middle of monitoring life-saving surgical equipment.

A former Mount Sinai Hospital technician is suing the hospital and her male former co-worker, alleging he repeatedly viewed pornography on his smartphone during open-heart surgeries rather than paying full attention to the equipment, and the Department of Defense recently reprimanded its employees for looking at pornography at work.

While companies may initially worry only that these activities are unprofessional, unproductive and unsecure, scholars say there are deeper problems created by unchecked pornography usage in the office — one of the most damaging being the way men objectify their female colleagues.

"Some businesses are aware of (sexual harassment) lawsuits, and they don't want a loss of productivity," says Mary Anne Layden, a professor and director of education at the Center for Cognitive Therapy at the University of Pennsylvania. "But I'm not sure that I hear business people saying, 'Oh my gosh, this is toxic material that is damaging our employees, male and female, and destroying our society, and I shouldn't participate in the destruction of our own society. I don't hear that, which sort of troubles me."

Concerns with connectivity

In 2010, 62.6 million Americans — 20 percent of the population — had a smartphone. Two years later, 116 million Americans could pull up Facebook, Google and MapQuest on their web-enabled phones.

By 2016, eMarketer — an online publisher of data, analysis and insights on digital marketing and media — predicts that there will be more than 192 million smartphone users — 74 percent of the mobile phone population and almost 59 percent of the general population.

TIME Magazine's recent "The Wireless Issue" contains results from a summer survey asking how people across the globe feel about a constant connection to the Internet and what it's doing to them and their families.

In the United States, 76 percent of respondents said being constantly connected was "helpful," while 13 percent said it was a burden and 11 percent said they didn't know. In India, 94 percent of respondents said constant connection was helpful.

While such a connection provides a greater ability to stay in touch with friends and family, make purchases, conduct business, listen to music, navigate new neighborhoods, play games, etc., it also increases the potential for problems.

In the TIME poll, 76 percent of 25- to 29-year-olds across the globe had flirted via text, and 36 percent had arranged an affair by texting. While only 8 percent of Americans had used phones to coordinate affairs, 56 percent of respondents in China had.

New York marriage and family therapist Sharon Gilchrest O'Neill has one client who was caught looking at pornography and finally admitted his obsession: every day for years, he'd gone into the bathroom at work and pulled up X-rated images on his smartphone.

"The amount of technology we have access to every hour of the day between our phones and computers — phones that you can bring in a bathroom? It's crazy," she said. "Our society is going to have to take a good hard look at it, because it's becoming quite a big issue."

A big issue, yes. A new issue? No. The difference is just in how people find it, said Robert Weiss, founder of the Sexual Recovery Institute and Director of Sexual Disorders Services for Elements Behavioral Health, a network of addiction recovery and treatment centers.

"Back in the day (people) had to get dressed, go in the car to the icky place under the bridge to buy a magazine, and it smelled bad," Weiss said. "That was the 80s. There were a lot of inhibitors through the process. But now there aren't any inhibitors to finding sexual content … or partners."

Who Buys Sex? - Linking Porn And Human Trafficking

I have seen the face of human trafficking.
While filming Nefarious: Merchant of Souls–a documentary on the global sex trade–I traveled to a small village on the outskirts of Phnom Penh, Cambodia. I had heard that the village was a hotspot for child sex tourism, but I wasn’t sure what to expect when I arrived.

When the dust around my vehicle settled after the long trip down the bumpy dirt road, I saw a white western man standing in front of a dilapidated shack. The man, probably in his late 40s, was bartering for sex with a child outside of a shanty brothel.

My film crew and I quickly jumped out of our vehicle and began to approach the man. When he saw us, he took off down the dirt street towards the main highway and we gave chase, catching up to him just as he saddled the back of a moped taxi. I grabbed him by his shirt and stared straight into his eyes. The look on his face was one of sheer cowardice and it seemed that there was a literal film of perversion that glossed over his eyes. After I raised my voice, demanding that he never return to the village again, I let him go.

As we walked back to our vehicle, I pondered what I just faced. Why was this happening? Who was this man? Why was the most lucrative business in this village child sex tourism?

Then it hit me––this man didn’t wake up the day before and decide to fly to the other side of the world to buy a child for sex.

7 Steps After You Discover Your Husband Looks At Porn

So what is a Christian wife to do when she discovers her husband is into pornography?

1. Listen objectively before passing judgment or reacting in anger or disappointment. Don’t jump to conclusions. Listen with discernment to be sure you have the facts. Is his story consistent with what you know? Listen carefully (Proverbs 18:13).

2. The discussion begins privately between the two of you (Matthew 18:15). Try to understand his depth of involvement, but it is rare to get the whole story the first time. God didn’t get it straight from Adam and Eve, and your husband isn’t likely to respond much better without help. But a good discussion is two-way, so ask him to listen to how you are feeling and how his sin affects your marriage and also his relationship with the Lord. Appeal to him to get help. If he refuses and you are convinced you have the facts, Matthew 18:16-17 says to involve help. Be discerning about whom you choose to involve, and keep the circle small. Don’t run to others who are not a part of the problem or a part of the solution. That includes other family members. Gossip is destructive, even if it is true.

3. Is his heart attitude toward his sin one of repentance or excuses and justification? Anger indicates lack of repentance. Worldly sorrow feels bad that he got caught. Godly sorrow produces the fruit of repentance, which is to change. Pray that he will come to a place of true godly sorrow (2 Corinthians 7:10). But what if he doesn’t want help? Neither did the Prodigal Son initially. Keep praying and trusting God, and get help for yourself! It is easy to focus on his sin, but you must choose to focus on your faithful Lord instead, and on your own growth through this difficult trial (James 1:2-4). Your husband’s desire for pornography is not about you—though every wife I’ve counseled initially believed she should have been enough for him and that it is somehow her fault. It is not! He chose to sin.

4. He will need people who can listen with compassion and humility, and who know we all are candidates to sin (Galatians 6:1-5). God has given you permission to involve those who can help! The truth will come easier when a pastor, counselor, or friend listens and then guides him into accountability in love, not in shame or anger, because love unifies and encourages (James 1:19-20). The goal is restoration.

5. The depth of involvement that comes out of these discussions will determine the kind of help you need. Will a men’s accountability group and installing Covenant Eyes be enough? Perhaps for some men, yes. Godly sorrow produces change! For others, a more intense individual counseling with a godly man who can unpack perhaps years of wrong thinking and help him develop a lifestyle of self-control in the seven building blocks for moral purity.

Wives do not make good counselors or accountability partners for their husbands, but function best in the God-given roles to support, encourage, and pray for their husband’s growth in sanctification. In fact, you as the wife will need your own counselor and encouragement as you go through this trial with your husband! Choose a counselor that will keep you pointed vertically and that will use Scripture to teach, comfort, and guide you through this difficult time in your marriage. As each of you focus on your own growth and sanctification, in time you will unify into that three-fold cord that is not easily broken (Ecclesiastes 4:12).

6. Model the grace and mercy that God the Father so graciously bestows on each of us when we sin and repent. Forgiveness comes with true repentance and change; it is choosing to model after the way God forgives us. Rebuilding trust is the process that takes more time, observing his accountability, faithfulness, and consistency. But trust first begins vertically: trusting God even when you fear a future fraught with anxiety, with or without him. Going vertical strengthens you to face your anxieties and disappointments, and to choose forgiveness when there are no guarantees.

7. Work on your communication and relationship as a couple. After he is growing in his vertical relationship with the Lord, it is time to evaluate the horizontal in every sphere. When a crisis in a marriage becomes a stepping stone to greater growth and intimacy, it strengthens the relationship and builds a platform for ministry to other couples in crisis.

Youth Workers Respond To Pornography

Over the weekend I had the privilege of spending a day with a roomful of youth workers at the Simply Youth Ministry Conference talking about one of the most timely, urgent, and difficult youth culture topics out there. . . pornography. It was ourCPYU seminar on the topic. At the end of the day, I asked my youth worker friends to act on what we had discussed during the day. Their task was to sit around their tables and come up with a list of youth ministry strategies that were framed as "do's" and "don'ts." While their list is not exhaustive, it's a good one.

And so, I share it here. Take it and run with it. There are some great starting points, parameters, and boundaries here. . . .

Don't ignore the pornography issue. It's not going to go away. It's touching every one of your kids and their families in some way, shape, or form.
Don't be scared of the pornography issue. None of us have all the answers than this. And, God is bigger than this issue.
Don't chastise, berate, or belittle the kids who are struggling with pornography. You'll only drive them away and forfeit your opportunity to lead them in the right direction.
Don't joke around, mess around, or make light of sexuality and sexual issues. They get enough of that from the culture and peer group. Let's be above all that.
Don't lose hope. There's not a kid who will benefit from a lack of hope. All of them need to know there is hope for them as they struggle with this issue.
Do compare God's truth and big "YES" for sex with the enemy's lies about sexuality.
Do be proactive in addressing the pornography issue rather than being reactive. Remember, it's a matter of when not if your kids are being exposed.
Do pray. The Holy Spirit can bring change.
Do equip them to live Christianly in the world. Don't pull them out of the culture. Rather, equip them to live in a "porn is the norm" culture.
Do have conversations with your students' "gatekeepers." In other words, talk about the issue with moms and dads.
Do educate and empower parents.
Do elevate women in the eyes of your students. Culture and pornography are objectifying and tearing down women. We need to lift them up and celebrate their identity in Christ.
Do have credibility with kids. Do you have an issue with pornography?

Forgiveness Does Not Heal Everything

Yes our sin is covered and paid for by the atoning work of Jesus on the cross. But nevertheless there are real and temporal consequences from the choices we make, especially when we get caught up in the addictive net of pornography.

We often have the mistaken idea that forgiveness will heal everything. Let me share three things that forgiveness does not do.

(1) Forgiveness does not remove all the consequences of wrong doing. The father who abandons his children may repent ten years later, but forgiveness does not restore the ten years of void.

(2) Forgiveness does not immediately restore trust. Once trust is violated, it must be rebuilt by the person being trustworthy. If that happens, then over time trust will be restored.

(3) Forgiveness does not remove the offense from one’s memory. It does mean that you choose not to hold the offense against them.

More Teens Are Using Smartphones To Get To The Internet

More American teens than ever are using smartphones as their main onramp to the Internet.

A new report from the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that far more teens are using smartphones to access the Internet than adults.

About 37% of Americans ages 12 to 17 go on to the Internet from a smartphone, up sharply in just one year, according to the 2012 Pew survey.

Twenty-three percent of teens mostly go online using their phones and not a desktop or laptop computer, compared with 15% of adults, the survey found.

Seventy-eight percent of teens have a cellphone, and 47% of those have smartphones.

Translation: 37% of all teens have smartphones, up from 23% in 2011, Pew said.

Pew researcher Mary Madden says the soaring use of smartphones to access the Internet is significant because teens are trendsetters and telegraph how we will all end up using technology from social media to texting.

A Freedom of Information Act request showed that 4,562 minors – 98 percent of them boys – committed 5,028 sexual offenses over a three year period, from 2009-2012.

Three separate police forces reported five-year-olds committing sexual offenses.

Sexting Prevalent Among Minority Teens

The latest addition to cyberpsychology examines the practice among black and Latino youth, a group that in one national study showed a higher tendency to sext than white youth. Researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston looked at data from 1,034 10th-graders from a large, urban school district in southeast Texas.

Their study, published in the journal Cyberpsychology, Behavior and Social Networking, found that more than 20% of students reported sending either a nude or semi-nude picture or video, or a text-only message, and more than 30% reported receiving a sext.

Black males and females had similar sexting habits, and both were more likely than Latino males to join in the sexting trend. Latino females, however, reported the lowest estimates for sexting behaviors.
